Chapter Text
After a long day of teaching kids of all ages dance routines, Magnus was exhausted, it took it out of him but he was happy. He loved every second. Seeing their faces light up with each new movement they learnt. And the gratification when it all came together in the end. It made every workday worth it. With a little extra pep in his step that evening, he left his dance studio. The sun setting behind him the sky full of orange and pink hues casting a warm glow across Brooklyn. He couldn’t help but feel like that warm glow resides within himself that night. He couldn’t wait to tell Alec the news.
Alec waltzed into the apartment. The one he shared with his friend Magnus. He and Alec had met a little over two years ago now and what a crazy two years it had been. Alec works at a daycare centre his days full of rowdy 4-year-olds. It was a whirlwind job, but he liked it, however, the kids always had unlimited sources of energy and no matter what he tried it was near impossible to get them to tire out. That was until Alec had stumbled across Banes Dance Studio on his way home one day. The sign ‘dance classes, all ages welcome’ outside. To this day stepping through that door had been one of if not the best decision he’d ever made. And well it had nothing to do with the gorgeous man sitting at the reception desk. Absolutely not. Okay so maybe it had everything to do with him but he’d never say it out loud.
Magnus, the name the man went by, was more than happy to take on a class of crazy 4-year-olds and they soon worked out the details and ever since then Alec had been taking the kids once a week. Those days were certainly the highlight of his week. Sure he now lived with him, but it was different seeing his friend in his element. A full smile beaming from his lips. Oh…..did he forget to mention he was hopelessly in love with his best friend. Not long after they moved in together, it happened quickly without him realising. He’d fallen headfirst in love with everything the man did. The way he smiled, laughed, the way he enamoured everyone just by entering a room. Alec was so hopelessly gone for his roommate but would never tell him for fear of, well, what everyone was scared of. Rejection. He'd never recover from that. Their friendship would never recover.
........
It was cold in their apartment when he entered a chill slicing across his arms as he closed the door and knowing how Magnus hated the cold more than he did, the first thing he did was turn on the heat pump.
Next on his list, dinner. Honestly, sometimes being an adult was so tiresome. Sure you have freedom but having to cook every day and run your life. He'd definitely taken being a kid for granted. Some nights he just wanted to blob on the couch and watch his favourite sitcom and have someone else take of his life and make him dinner, but yet, here he was in front of the fridge deciding what on earth to make when his phone rang from his front pocket.
“Hey, I came by the studio on my way home but you weren’t there, what do you want for dinner?” Alec answered.
“Oh, yeah. I may have already left. Anyways, forget dinner, I stopped on my way home at our favourite Thai place, I’ll be home in like 5 minutes,” Magnus was practically beaming through the phone.
“What made you so happy?” Alec asked.
“All will be revealed soon, don’t worry,”
“So mysterious,”
“It’s good, trust me,”
“Okay, well just hurry home I’m----”
“Starving. Yes, I know what you’re like if you’re not fed within 30 minutes of getting home. I have had the pleasure of living with you for two years now,”
Alec rolled his eyes, “I’m not that bad,”
“Honey you are the very definition of hangry, it scares me sometimes,”
“Now you’re just being dramatic,”
“Am I though?”
Alec could practically hear Magnus grinning through the phone. Dork.
“How about you get home first and then we will see,”
“Ah yes, speaking of I’m practically opening the door right now,” And as if on cue he hung up the phone and the door clicked open. “Honey, I’m home,” Magnus yelled. He did that almost every day, finding it funny to joke they were an old married couple.
Magnus slid into the kitchen resting his hip against the bench with a sly grin on his face. “Well if I don't have the best news to tell you tonight,”
Alec reached for the food, “Food first then news,” Magnus snorted but passed the food over.
They settled on the couch, flicking the tv on as Magnus began to tell him what was going on. “So, okay I guess how this starts isn’t exactly great but it gets better so bear with me,” Alec started tucking into his food as he nodded, Magnus continued. “You know my colleague, Maia?” He nodded again. He would say they were even friends, considering he has an invite to her wedding. “She and her partner have called it quits,”
“That’s awful, is she okay?” Alec asked.
“She says she is, but I don’t know if I believe her. I asked if she needed time off but said she’d rather dive into work,”
Alec frowned, “Magnus this isn’t what I would call good news,”
Magnus sent him an exasperated look, “I told you it doesn't start great just hang on,” He paused, clearing his throat. “So, their honeymoon to Hawaii is nonrefundable, but she said she doesn’t want to go.”
“That’s understandable, but wouldn’t it be nice to get away?”
“That’s what I said but she said it would just be a reminder of all this mess between them.” He paused again and Alec almost thought he was doing it on purpose to drag this out for dramatic effect. “She offered the trip to me,”
“Oh, nice, are you taking it?”
Magnus smiled shaking his head slightly in dismay, “You idiot, you’re coming with me,”
Alec dropped his fork in his food and his mouth left agape, “I’m sorry, what?”
“You and me, going to Hawaii. C’mon it’d be so fun!” Magnus looked at him with such pleading eyes. “You don’t have to worry about money or anything, I've already told Maia I'll send her some money for it, but you don’t have to pay anything.”
Alec shook his head trying to gather himself, “Hang on, her wedding would’ve been in two weeks, that means we’d be leaving in two weeks. Magnus, that isn’t enough notice for work. No way they’d let me leave,” He could see the disappointment in Magnus’ eyes and it hurt to see, to be the reason behind it but there was no possible way he'd get the time off.
“You’ve never had a sick day or taken any leave since the day I met you, surely they wouldn’t have a choice but to let you take some time off. Please?” Alec stayed silent, thinking, thinking but mostly trying and failing not to crumble under the cow eyes Magnus was currently using on him. God. “Don’t make me get on the floor and beg,”
Alec snorted at the image. Who was he kidding as if he could say no to him? “Fine, I’ll ask tomorrow, but I make no promises, okay,” Magnus practically leapt on him, Alec quickly shielded his food as Magnus wrapped his arms around him. “Yes! Thank you, thank you.” Magnus squeezed him tight and pulled back, and the smile that greeted Alec; let’s just say he was hoping he could get the time off, cause he would do anything to keep that smile on Magnus' face.
It wasn’t hard to get time off as Magnus had said. He put in his leave form and it was accepted within the hour. Maybe a little too quickly for his liking.
They’d arrived in Hawaii a little over 30 minutes ago and were well on their way to the resort. Magnus was practically vibrating with excitement next to him. It was cute. He hadn’t seen him this excited for anything in a long time. Alec himself was excited as well for some much-needed relaxation. He pictured himself laying out by the pool, soaking up the sunshine as he sipped cocktails and read his book. God, he was only 25 and already sounded like a middle-aged man. He wasn’t sure how this plan would hold up considering Magnus wanted to do 500 other different things. But as long as Magnus kept smiling like that Alec would keep doing things to get that smile, and if that meant travelling all over this island. He’d do it. Call him smitten, you'd be right. He knew he was, he’d accepted it. He'd also accepted there was likely nothing to come of his attraction towards the other man, as Magnus had never hinted at it being mutual.
Soon enough the resort came in to view and they saw where they’d be staying for the next two weeks.
Walking up to the resort was stunning, and something he definitely couldn’t afford if he were coming here on his dime. Alec was busy taking it all in and hadn’t noticed Magnus disappear from his side. He quickly found him a few metres away at the reception. Alec stayed back with their bags. He could see the beach from where he was standing and god, he couldn’t wait to dig his feet in the sand and hear the waves crashing around him. It’d been so long since he’d been to the beach let alone one in Hawaii.
“Ready?” Magnus grinned up at him. He hadn’t even noticed the man walk back. “Absolutely,” The first day of any holiday was the worst. No one could convince him otherwise. A long day flying leaving, followed by that icky feeling whenever you got off a plane. Your ears taking a while to get back to normal. It felt like he had drunk 10 whiskeys on the plane when he in fact had none. He couldn't wait to jump in the shower in their room and wash off this feeling which would soon hopefully be followed by sleeping, and lots of it.
Walking up the footpath lined with massive palm trees he caught Magnus chewing on his bottom lip. Just before Alec got the chance to ask him what was up he said “So quick thing I should probably mention.”
Alec’s brows furrowed. “What?”
“They think we are married.”
“What!?”
“Shhh,” He looked behind them to the man who was carrying their bags. “Turns out Maia booked the honeymoon package, and I didn’t want to tell them we weren’t you know…... married. What if they kicked us out or something?”
“They think….we are married.” Alec’s brain had stopped processing information. Or maybe it was broken altogether and he hadn't heard Magnus correctly. Was he dreaming and still on the plane? This wasn’t happening? Was it?
“Yeah. In love. Newlyweds. The whole thing.” Magnus grinned somewhat awkwardly. On second thought it looked more like he was cringing.
“So,” He paused, swallowing.
Magnus cut him off before he could finish his sentence sending a glance back to the concierge. “Perhaps we should finish this conversation in our room?”
Alec blinked a few times feeling like he was in a dream, “Uh,” clearing his throat. “Yeah okay."
They made it to their room at least 10 minutes ago but they hadn't spoken a word yet, Alec needing a few minutes to get his head around this. Looking at Magnus who was currently sitting on the bed that they would both be sharing. Oh yes, another new development there. He said, “We have to act married?”
Magnus picked at the duvet still chewing on his lip. “I guess yeah,” He sighed. “We are best friends, surely it won’t be that hard to act in love?” Magnus tried smiling up at him. “I’m sorry, I know this was just thrown on you. We don't have to do it if you don't want to. Are you okay?”
Alec wasn’t sure if he nodded, or shook his head or even spoke words. He had calmed down since they’d entered their room but his brain was still a bit jumbled. The thing Magnus didn’t realize was that pretending wasn't going to be a problem. The problem was whether his heart was going to be broken by the end of this.
Magnus walked over to him, his hands sliding into his looking up at him with those kind brown eyes. “Alec?” He asked.
Alec did his best to settle his heart smiling back giving his hands a reassuring squeeze. He could do this, he would do this. For Magnus, “So I guess I’m married for two weeks,”
Magnus beamed up at him. “Well then, I consider myself the luckiest man alive for two weeks,”
Alec took some much needed time in the shower to clear his head and recentre himself. It wasn't that big of a deal if he thought about it. A few terms of endearment here and there. Holding hands. It's not like they'd be making out for all to see or anything. They'd enjoy their trip undisturbed, nothing was going to change that.
...
Stepping into their bedroom towel wrapped around his waist, Magnus was standing at the edge of the bed just looking at it. “It seems the whole one-bed situation slipped my mind. Should one of us take the couch?” He asked.
Alec stared at the bed and then back at Magnus then back to the bed. “Up to you, I don’t mind.”
“Well that’s helpful,” Magnus sighed sitting on the bed. “If you’re comfortable with it...can we just share the bed?”
“Yeah, we are newlyweds after all,” Alec added.
“Good point,” Magnus replied, looking lost in thought. Maybe Alec wasn’t the only one spinning out about this whole faking a relationship thing.
Alec grabbed his things and went back to the bathroom to change.
Magnus was dressed in a loose floral shirt, the top 3 buttons shamelessly undone, and a nice pair of jeans. “Going somewhere?” Alec asked.
“Dinner, and you’re coming with. We need to put this fake relationship to the test.”
“I kinda just wanted to sleep but now that I think about it I am kinda starving.”
"Exactly, and a hungry Alec isn't a fun Alec,"
"You make out that I'm worse than I am,"
"I know, it's just teasing you is so fun. You get this little crease between your brows and you always pout your lips slightly," Well that was quite the observation Alec thought silently, and then looked up as in to check if there really was a crease between his brows and now he just looked like an idiot. When he looked at Magnus he was holding back a laugh.
"I didn't just do that, okay. You saw nothing,"
"I didn't see what?"
"Exactly, now can we please go?"
"That was the plan, my sweet sweet hubby, that was the plan,"
They were doing this.
The restaurant was alive with friends, families, and couples all enjoying themselves. Soft music playing in the background. He hadn’t even noticed Magnus slip his hand into his until they were swinging between them and he felt his stomach flip.
“Sorry if this isn't okay...I just thought,” Alec could feel Magnus' grip loosening so he tightened his “No, it’s nice.”
“Oh, okay.” Magnus shared a shy smile with him.
They were soon seated in a quiet corner away from most of the noise left to mull over their menus. “It doesn’t quite feel real yet, does it?”
“Hmm?”
“Being in Hawaii, it’s so beautiful,”
“Oh, yeah. I think it’ll take a few days to take it all in.”
“Definitely. So, what are we thinking for food? The seafood platter sounds quite good,”
"Yeah, that could be an option,"
Alec was flicking through his menu quietly when “Alec? Alec Lightwood, is that you?”
That voice sounded so familiar... that was when it hit him. “Aline?”
She laughed, a hand over her mouth. “Holy shit it is you.”
Alec sputtered in complete shock. Of all places to come across an old friend. Hawaii. "Oh my god, how are you?" Alec stood to hug her.
“Great, I mean there isn't much to complain about when you’re in Hawaii.” She looked at Magnus. “Sorry, I’m so rude, I'm interrupting your date.”
“No, no you’re fine.” Alec smiled. “Magnus, this is Aline, we went to high school together.”
Magnus smiled. “Lovely to meet you,”
“You two are, together?”
Just before Alec corrected her, Magnus jumped in. “Yeah, married actually.”
“Holy shit Lightwood," Aline smacked his shoulder. "You’re married? I never thought I’d see the day. Congratulations to you both.”
“Thanks,” He smiled but it felt wrong to lie to her.
“Anyways, I should get back. The wife will be wondering what’s taking me so long.” She laughed.
“You and Helen?”
“Yeah,” She smiled like her whole world lit up at the mere mention of her name.
Alec wanted that. “I’m so happy for you both, I knew you two would make it.”
“You and Magnus should join us if you want? I’d love to catch up, I’m sure Helen wouldn’t mind.”
Alec turned to Magnus, “You want to?”
“I don’t see why not, that’d be nice.” Magnus stood up, “I’ll just go tell the waiter we are moving.”
“Okay, we are just over there,” She pointed to where Alec could see Helen waiting and waved. As she left, Alec turned to Magnus. “You’re okay with this right?”
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”
“Just wanted to make sure.”
“I’m going to press her for all your embarrassing stories.” Magnus beamed.
“You know, on second thought.” Before he could stop him, Magnus was already halfway across the room.
When Alec reached the table, Magnus was already introducing himself. “Hi, Helen is it? I’m Magnus, Alec’s husband.” To say that phrase knocked the wind out of him was an understatement. Husband.
Not real. Not real. Not real.
“Nice to meet you, Magnus,” She shook Magnus' hand before looking at Alec. “Hey Alec, it’s good to see you again, of all places,” She laughed.
“I wasn’t expecting it, but it’s a nice surprise,” Alec smiled back pulling the seat out for Magnus before sitting next to him.
Getting settled around the table Alec asked, “I have to know, how long have you two been married?”
Helen turned to Aline both of them beaming from ear to ear it almost felt too personal to keep looking. “We are celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary,” Aline kissed Helen’s hand then looked to him and Magnus, “What about you two?”
“Huh?” Alec asked.
“How long have you two been married?” Helen giggled.
“Oh,” He laughed back, be that awkwardly. “We are newlyweds would you believe,”
Magnus reached for his hand, “Yup, it hasn’t even been 24 hours since we said I do,”
Alec laced their fingers together, "Best day of my life. Who would've thought I would ever be so lucky to call him mine,"
Aline sat there with a giddy smile. "I have to know, when did you both know he was the one? It sounds cliche but I always knew Helen was my one and only, even in High School when all the odds were against us," Helen and Aline shared a loving glance. "I love you, baby," Helen smiled, "Love you too," Aline snapped out of her love induced gaze and looked to both he and Magnus, "C'mon, I want no details spared."
Alec looked at Magnus, who was already looking at him, his eyes softening. "I still remember the day a frazzled kindergarten teacher came into my studio" Magnus chuckled.
"Did I really look that bad?" Alec scrunched his nose.
"Did I say you looked bad? I honestly don't think you've ever looked bad a day in your life, Alexander." Magnus didn't look away while talking. "So, yeah I remember him coming in basically begging me to take his kids once a week." Magnus smiled. "And I mean there was no way I could say no, and I have never regretted it to this day. Not only because the kids are pretty cool, but because it's where he and I all started. And it's like you say, Aline, I always kind of just knew he was it for me. Sometimes at the end of the day, I'd find him waiting outside the studio, he'd walk me to my car and chat about the silly stuff in life. He makes me laugh like no one else, he encourages me whenever I'm doubting my work. He just gets me. It's hard to describe it all."
Holy shit.
"Well fuck, Alec. Looks like you got a really good one here," Aline sniffed.
Alec couldn't take his eyes off him. Magnus had never looked more sincere in his life but there was still a tiny part of Alec's brain that reminded him that they were pretending. So all that stuff about him being it for him. It wasn't real. It wasn't true. It wasn't real. It couldn't be.
"I sure do," Was all he managed to get out
Luckily the waitress appeared with their food sometime later and Alec didn't have to share how he knew Magnus was the one. He honestly didn't know if words would even come out, he was still trying to crawl his way back to reality where he knew what was real and fake, but even that was blurred at the moment.
.......
Magnus got along with Helen and Aline well, better than he could’ve expected, but that was the thing about Magnus he got along with everyone. The rest of the night went quickly and the next thing he knew the restaurant had emptied and the staff were politely side-eyeing them to leave.
“Time really got away from us,” Aline chuckled.
“It did, wow when did it get so late,” Magnus replied. “We should probably get going. I don’t even know how we are both still awake after our flight today,” he rubbed at his eyes.
“Yes yes, you both get to bed but now that we know we have some friends here we should hang out some more, maybe do something fun together? See what this beautiful island has to offer.”
“That would be lovely, Aline,” Alec stood his legs feeling stiff from sitting for so long. Hugging both the girls before they left he said, “You two have a lovely rest of your night,”
“You too,”
A comfortable silence settled around them as they made their way back to their room. The pathway lit with soft lights so they could see where they were going.
Magnus gnawed at his bottom lip. “Hey, Alec, you’re okay with all of this right?” He asked. “Cause if you’re not we can stop, at any point, just say the word,”
Alec squeezed Magnus’ hand a little tighter, “I’ll admit at first I felt a bit weird but I’m fine with it, and if we get a lovely holiday out of it, there’s no harm right?” Magnus smiled up at him his eyes heavy with sleep and wine. “No harm at all,”
They were making their way through the garden when Magnus stiffened.
Alec reached for his hand, “Magnus? What’s wrong?” Magnus didn't answer he just stood there like a deer in headlights. “Magnus?”
“Shit, fuck, shit.”
“Again, not helping me here,” Alec feigned a smile.
Magnus sighed, “That woman behind you, she’s an ex of mine, a bad one, like nuclear bad.” Alec made to turn his head but Magnus hissed. “No, don’t make it obvious,”
“Well, what do you want me to do?”
“I don’t know,” Magnus grumbled. He was definitely panicking. Alec had never seen Magnus panic. Who the hell was this woman and what did she do to him to make him react like this?
Taking matters into his own hands, Alec slid behind Magnus, wrapping his arms around his waist pretending to kiss along Magnus’ shoulder when he felt him shiver beneath him. Interesting.
“Okay, I see her. Hang on, is that Camille?” He’d heard stories about her not too long ago, she fit his description of her.
“I believe so,” Magnus sighed.
Alec could feel Magnus slowly but surely let himself lean into Alec's chest, feeling just how exhausted he was. It'd been a long day for the both of them and Alec felt oddly protective of Magnus right now and just wanted to get him to bed. “Do you think if we keep walking she may not see us?” Magnus asked.
“I guess we will find out, it’s the only way to our room,”
“You know if you had magical wings, now would be a good time to reveal them,” Magnus clung to him.
Alec chuckled into Magnus’ hair, “You read too many fantasy novels,”
“I think you mean, not enough.” Alec couldn’t see it but he knew Magnus was smiling and that was far better than the panic he'd seen on his face a few moments earlier.
“C’mon, let’s just go,” He made to move his arms from Magnus’s waist but the man clung on. “Babe, I can’t walk like this,”
“Can’t you try, I feel less exposed like this, I feel safe,” And if that didn’t make Alec’s heart physically jump he didn’t know what would. Alec tightened his hold around Magnus and began to walk, “Fine, but if I trip, I blame you,”
Magnus brought one of Alec’s hands to his lips kissing lightly, “And I will accept the blame, happily.”
They’d almost made it past Camille when they heard her shrill voice. “Magnus?”
They halted to a stop. “We have two options,” Magnus begun, “We turn around and face her," He paused, "Or we run,”
Alec smiled into Magnus’ neck, “And what option are we voting for?”
“I vote….. we run,”
“In that case,” He removed his arms from Magnus and reached for his hand; a childish grin on his face. “We run!” Alec laughed as he soared off in the direction of their room Magnus right beside him beaming from ear to ear.
They made it safely inside and broke out in hysterical laughter. “For our sakes, I hope we don’t bump into her again,” Magnus huffed between breaths.
“Do you reckon we can run every time?” He chuckled.
“God, I hope so,”
Magnus came closer and swung his arms around Alec’s neck so they were impossibly close. Alec heard his own breath hitch. “Thank you,” Magnus said.
Alec settled his voice before he spoke, “For what?”
“Playing along,”
“Of course,” Alec didn’t know what came over him as he dipped and kissed Magnus’ forehead. “We should get some sleep, you look as exhausted as I feel.”
“I’m not sure whether to be offended here,”
“Oh shush, you know you always look good,”
Magnus pulled away kicking off his shoes and making his way to their bedroom. “I do, but I do sure like hearing it from you,” He winked over his shoulder and disappeared behind the door.
Alec stood there with one thought on his mind. How the hell was he going to survive two weeks of this?
Chapter Text
Someone was shining a torch in his face. That was the only explanation he could think as to why his eyes were screaming. It was too bright even with his eyes closed. He opened them one at a time and soon figured out what had happened. They had forgotten to shut the curtains last night, both too exhausted to do anything but flop into bed. The sun was beaming straight through their bedroom window.
Once he no longer wanted to tear his eyes out, he was greeted with the view of Alec asleep next to him. Arms tucked around a pillow, his cheek squished against it. Dark strands of his hair sticking in every direction. Magnus thought himself incredibly lucky. Sure he'd seen him fall asleep on the couch a few times at home, but he'd never been privy to this. Alec's cheeks were a little flushed from the heat that was already seeping in from outside. He looked so peaceful, and soft. Magnus found himself just laying there for what could be described as far too long just taking in every small feature. Until Alec unintentionally stretched his leg, grazing it along Magnus’ shin sending a shiver up his leg.
An awfully loud groan filled the air, “Who turned the light on?”
Magnus sat up against the pillows tempted to brush his fingers through Alec’s messy locks. “It appears the sun did I'm afraid”
“Tell the sun I said, turn it off,”
Magnus chuckled. “I’ll do my best,” he waited for a beat. “Hmm, it would appear the light will remain on for quite some time,”
“Ugh,”
“You’re cute in the morning.”
“No one is cute in the morning, Magnus,” Alec grumbled.
“Hmm, note to self, fake husband is a big grump in the morning. You’d think after flatting with you for almost 2 years I’d know this.”
“I’m not grumpy,” Alec said, be that grumpily.
“Says every grumpy person ever,” Magnus laughed. "Therefore you are just proving my point,"
Next thing he knew a pillow came flying at his face. “Hey!”
Alec was grinning, looking very pleased with himself until he realised Magnus caught that grin to which he drew his face into the most adorable pout. “I’m not grumpy,”
“You just threw a pillow at me, Alec, I think I win this argument,”
Alec turned his head into the pillow, “Ugh.”
“You want some coffee?” Magnus asked.
“Oh, yes please,”
Magnus slid off the bed finding his slippers. “Would you like me to close the curtains?”
“No, I’m awake now, may as well stay awake,”
Magnus rang for some coffee, while Alec shouted from the other room, "Hey, something crossed my mind last night,"
Waltzing back into the room, "I hope it wasn't anything bad," Magnus replied.
"No, just now that everyone here thinks we are married, we should probably find some sort of fake rings, Right?"
Magnus stilled. How did he not think of this? Clearly, he wasn't the smart one in the pair. "Shit," He cursed under his breath. "Do you think Aline and Helen noticed last night?" He asked.
Alec pursed his lips thinking. "I don't know, I couldn't tell you. Maybe not? I mean they didn't say anything."
"Hmm," Magnus thought to himself. "Maybe if anyone asks we can say they are getting resized?"
Alec sat up leaning against the headboard. It was unfair really, how good he looked in the morning. "You really think they would believe that? Surely for our wedding, we would get the correct size no?
"You make a good point."
They were both silent for some time, Magnus busy trying to think up a way to save themselves. Alec, probably still yelling at the sun in his head to go away.
"I wonder if there's a jewellery shop here?" Magnus thought aloud.
Alec looked adorable as he scrunched his brows, "You want to buy two wedding bands? Magnus that's gonna be ridiculously expensive,"
"No, no, not real ones, but I'm sure we can find some good fakes?"
"I guess we could have a look before the boat cruise this afternoon?" Alec offered.
It was settled. They would buy each other a fake wedding ring. What the fuck were they doing.
The door rang and Magnus went to answer, he could smell the coffee before he opened the door.
"Good morning," The man said. "A complimentary breakfast for the newlyweds," He smiled.
Magnus was taken back. "Oh, thank you, wow."
"You are more than welcome, I hope you enjoyed your first night with us,"
"It was lovely,"
"Splendid," The man was way too bubbly for this early in the morning. "If you need anything during your stay don't hesitate to ask,"
"Okay," Magnus returned the mans smile, "Thank you," and he was on his way.
Magnus wheeled the food and coffee into the living room and out onto the patio. "We got a free breakfast," Magnus yelled to Alec, wherever he was.
"We did, why? Are we just that awesome?"
"Afraid not," Magnus laughed. "Just one of the perks of being newlyweds I guess,"
Alec appeared sitting across from him. "Well, I won't say no to a free breakfast."
They both scoffed down the fruit and eggs hungrier than they thought they were. After a coffee and good food, Magnus felt ready for the day. Ready for this trip, and ready as he'll ever be to fake this marriage with Alec.
"I'm gonna take a swim before we leave," Magnus said going inside to change. When he came back out Alec was gone.
They had their own pool out by the patio. Magnus jumped in, did a couple of laps and decided that was enough for the day. He'd rather lay on the floaty and soak up the warm sun. Feeling content, he lay back smiling. He was about to close his eyes when Alec appeared wearing nothing but board shorts and Magnus had to force himself not to stare.
“You look really comfortable there,” Alec said a gleam in his eyes.
“Whatever you are thinking….do not do it, Alexander!”
“My full name sounds so good on your lips,”
Where the hell did this flirty side of Alec come from? “Shut up,” Magnus splashed him with water.
“See now that you did that you've given me no option,” He paused, entering the pool coming closer with every step he took. “But to do this,” He tipped the floaty, Magnus, with it and by the time he managed to catch up with what had just happened making his way to the surface, Alec was already sitting pretty in his spot.
“I can’t believe you just did that!”
Alec grinned and shrugged, “As I said, it looked comfortable,”
“Okay well scoot back, this isn’t titanic there is definitely room enough for us both up there,”
“The only space I see is for myself,”
Magnus bit back a smile. He liked this playful side of Alec. He was always so wound up at home he never knew this side of him even existed.
“We will see about that,” Magnus physically latched on to Alec’s legs and crawled up onto the floaty while trying his best not to flip them; all while keeping eye contact with Alec who looked shocked this was even happening. Yeah, you're not the only one who does the unexpected Magnus thought to himself. He made it all the way up so he was right between Alec's legs. “Not looking so smug now are you, sweetheart”
Alec cleared his throat, “Uh, um,” He cleared it again shaking his head. “Just sit down,”
“My pleasure,” Magnus turned, leaning into Alec’s chest and laying his head on his shoulder. “This is nice,” it almost felt like they were a real couple, but they weren’t and the sinking feeling hit him as he realized that none of this was real.
“You put on sunscreen before you came out here?” Alec asked.
“A little on my face but I don’t really need it,”
“Magnus! Of course, you need it.”
“Fine, you can help me with it when we get on the boat for the cruise,”
Alec stilled. “Shit the cruise,” he checked his watch, “We have to be there in like an hour,”
“But I’m so comfy right now, and that's plenty of time” Magnus pouted. If he could lay like this with Alec for the rest of his life he would. “Sorry for this,” Alec replied.
“Huh?” And then he was underwater. Again. Alec was already out of the pool before Magnus resurfaced. Huffing he said. “Alexander, if this marriage were real you bet your ass I’d be asking for a divorce,”
“Would not!” Alec yelled from inside a towel wrapped around his waist and one in his hand waiting for Magnus. "We need to get ready now if we want to get rings and make it to the boat on time," Shit. the rings. It had already slipped his mind. Running out of the pool he dashed into the shower first, turning and poking his tongue out at Alec.
Alec laughed. "What are you, twelve?"
"It's only fair I get the first shower considering you almost drowned me twice."
"You're so dramatic." Alec shook his head, smiling. "Just be quick, we can't be late."
So turns out the only place in the resort that sold jewellery that didn't cost more than his car back home was the gift store. Magnus wasn't very impressed with buying their fake wedding rings at a gift store but it was their only option. They managed to find two plan silver bands that fit them both relatively well, the only thing was they had Hawaii engraved on the inside. Alec had laughed watching Magnus begrudgingly purchase them. As long as no one saw the inside of them they'd go undiscovered. Hopefully.
Turned out ring shopping took far longer than either of them had anticipated and they were now running to catch the boat in time before it left. They came running up the deck just in time slipping on the boat huffing and puffing. Catching a few strange stares in the process.
They found a quiet spot on the second story of the boat looking out over the ocean as they took off on their quest.
“You two sure know how to make an entrance,” Someone laughed.
“Aline?”
“It would appear so. Looks like you're stuck with us again,” Helen joined Aline at her side, “Unless you don't want our company, that's okay too," Helen added.
“We are great why wouldn't they want our company,” Aline beamed.
“We'd love your company,” Magnus smiled, "Or well I certainly would. This one has been driving me mental all morning" He joked pointing to Alec.
Alec rolled his eyes, "He's upset cause I tipped him off the pool floaty this morning,"
"Twice may I add," Magnus huffed. "I was perfectly comfortable until this sexy giant comes along and throws me off,"
Alec shrugged smiling, "I'm not even a little bit sorry,"
Magnus hung his mouth open and stared at him. Alec gently lifted his fingers to Magnus' chin closing his mouth. "Don't do that you'll swallow a bug,"
"You guys already bicker like a married couple, you're too cute," Aline laughed.
Alec dragged Magnus into his lap wrapping his arms around his waist. "He certainly is,"
"Flattery will get you nowhere,"
Alec whispered behind his ear, "We both know that's not true," He thought he felt Magnus shiver in his lap, but he must've imagined it because he instantly jumped off like he was on fire.
Alec tried to brush the weird feeling away and focused on the guide, who had begun talking not too long ago. He talked about the history and culture of the island and all the islands surrounding it. Drinks were handed out as they sailed along from bay to bay. They’d stopped at a certain spot where the guide said a pod of dolphins sometimes came to play. Alec looked out eagerly in hopes of seeing even one, but it seemed they were hiding today. Which was a shame, he'd never seen a dolphin in real life and it was something he'd always wanted to do.
Magnus came up beside him at the edge of the boat, "If we don't see any today we can book something for later in the trip?" He wrapped his arm around his waist as he continued. "I know they're your favourite animal,"
Alec turned his head to look at him, surprised to find Magnus a lot closer than he thought. "How did you know that?"
Magnus smiled like it was a stupid question. "I take note of things, Alec. You'd be surprised what's stored in here," Magnus tapped his temple.
Alec caught himself quickly looking down at Magnus' smile, his lips. That was dangerous territory so he quickly looked back out over the ocean. "Oh," was all he managed to say. Great conversational skills there Alec he scolded himself.
"So is that yes to the dolphin thing or no?" Magnus asked.
Right, he still needed to answer his earlier question. "Yeah, absolutely. I'd love that."
As the day went on the heat reached soaring heights he and Magnus had both removed their shirts. Alec turned to Magnus asking him to apply some sunscreen to his back but may have realized his error a little too late as Magnus reached lower down his back and he started to squirm out of his touch. “Alexander,” Magnus whispered in his ear so only he could hear, “Are you ticklish?”
“No!” He said unconvincingly as he shifted out of Magnus’ touch once again.
Magnus was holding back his laughter, as he prodded at Alec’s waist,
“Magnus, I swear to god,”
“Alexander, I’m not religious but even I know you shouldn't swear at God,” Magnus tickled him again and Alec swerved so fast pushing his hands away. Magnus giggled, "Call this payback for this morning, sweetie," Magnus reached towards him again but Alec was faster and held his hands to the seat.
Magnus leaned forward into Alec's space a gleam in his eye, the same look he saw earlier that day when they were in the pool. Challenging him, Magnus said, “What are you going to do, Alec?” Kiss him. It was the first thing that popped into his brain but he quickly threw that thought away.
“And here we are, this is Turtle Canyon where we will be snorkelling this afternoon. You’ll find sea turtles and many tropical fish. So, everyone let’s get your gear sorted and enjoy,” The boat guide, much to Alec's relief took Magnus' attention from him so he didn't end up do anything stupid, like kiss him.
They gathered their gear and met up with Aline and Helen who were holding up a GoPro, "Hey you two get in here,"
They scooted closer all taking a picture together before jumping in the water.
Alec had never been snorkelling before, but now that he had he never wanted to stop. It was the most incredible experience he ever had. He and Magnus swam together pointing to fish and turtles as they went. Time seemed to just fly by as they lived in this world under the sea. Being able to share the moment with Magnus made this whole day even better. Feeling brave he reached for his hand under the water linking their fingers, Magnus stopped swimming and looked between them at first but then tightened his hold and continued swimming.
Aline swam up to them at one point asking them to record her and Helen swimming hand in hand and sharing a kiss underwater. Alec would be lying if he didn't feel a twinge of jealousy. They were so happy and being able to freely express their love for one another. He found himself looking toward Magnus, wanting all that with him. If only. Maybe one day, when things weren't so complicated.
.....
After an hour or so in the water, they made it up on board the boat looking for somewhere to relax for the rest of the evening. The sun was setting as they lay down on the trampoline net at the back of the boat. There weren't many people out there, so they had a lot of room to themselves. Alec closed his eyes face toward the sun when he felt Magnus fold his arms on his chest and use it as a pillow. Instead of fighting the urge, for a change, Alec let himself lean into it running his fingers through Magnus’ wet hair. The other man hummed confirming he was enjoying it.
“Aren’t you two cute,” Came a voice Alec knew wasn’t Helen or Aline’s? His worst fears were confirmed when he felt Magnus' muscles tense where he lay. “Are you going to pretend to ignore me again like you did last night?” Alec caught Magnus taking a deep sigh before sitting up to face her. “I couldn’t possibly know what you mean,” Magnus' tone wasn't kind. Hoping Camille got the hint Alec sat up shuffling in behind Magnus leaning his chin on his shoulder and running his fingers up down his left arm. He wanted Magnus to know he wasn't alone right now and he had Alec to lean on. They were in this fake marriage together. To Alec's relief, he felt Magnus relax a little into his chest.
Camille rolled her eyes, “Fine, lie if you have to, it’s what you’re good at,” Alec forced himself to bite back the words he wanted to say and instead asked Magnus ever so innocently, "Baby, who's this?"
"No one worth our time,"
Alec hummed his response flat out ignoring Camille and instead deciding to kiss along Magnus' shoulder.
Magnus shuddered out a breath, “Is there any particular reason you’ve decided to ruin my night with my Husband?” Magnus asked the woman who was still somehow standing there. She obviously hadn't got the hint from Alec's excessive PDA to fuck off. Instead, he saw the woman's eyebrows raise in surprise.
“You’re married?” She asked like it was the most outrageous thing she’d ever heard in her lifetime.
Alec had had enough. “He sure is. I still can’t believe I got so lucky," He replied.
“I’m the lucky one,” Magnus replied softly.
Camille cleared her throat “I’m actually engaged myself.”
“Good for you," Magnus dismissed her turning toward Alec "Bye,"
He didn't wait to see if she left he just lay back down on the net below them, Alec followed suit, asking, “You ever going to tell me what happened between you two?”
“Do I have to?”
“I suppose not, but if she is going to keep appearing on our trip then it would be nice to know what exactly went down between you two.”
“It’s a boring long story no one wants to hear, let’s just drop it,”
Alec doubted it was anything but boring and he couldn't speak for anyone else but he certainly wanted to hear about it if only to get a clearer picture of what Magnus went through when he was with her. The way he brushed it aside so easily worried him, but accepting Magnus' wishes Alec dropped it giving him time to himself.
They lay on the net a little longer, but there was no cuddling this time. It was like Magnus had decided to close himself off for the night. Which made for an uneasy dinner with the girls. Aline kept sending looks of concern his way the entire night but he brushed it off and told her not to worry. Magnus would snap out of it eventually. It didn't help that they could hear Camille's awful high pitch laugh from across the room all night. It wasn't exactly the best end to their day.
Later that night they were finally back in their room, Magnus was exhausted. Their day had been amazing, borderline perfect even until Camille had come along and ruined everything, or well, he let her get under his skin and ruin it for not only himself but Alec.
It was unfair to him, Alec had been nothing but supportive the whole time Camille was speaking to them really playing up the whole married thing. Magnus was certain he'd never forget the feeling of Alec's fingers running up and down his arm or lips skimming across his shoulder. In fact, he was getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
Speaking of the other man he had barely spoken to him since their brief chat after she left, he didn’t blame him. Not only had he talked Alec into being his fake husband but now he had to deal with an ex from hell. This wasn't how their trip was meant to go.
Rolling his shoulders he felt a little tender from the day’s activities. He pulled his shirt off and changed into a loose tee, and shorts. Alec hadn’t followed him into their room, instead, he’d walked straight out to the deck, sat down and dangled his feet in the pool.
Magnus watched him from their room for a little before deciding to join him. He didn’t like this awkward tension between them. It felt wrong.
Sitting beside him “Hey,” He said quietly.
“Hey,” he didn't lookup.
“So, tonight could’ve gone better.” Magnus swished his feet in the pool.
“It definitely could have, I think Aline and Helen picked up on whatever was going on between us,”
“Yeah, I’m sorry for that, I feel like this is mostly my fault.”
Alec said nothing, continuing to push his legs back and forth through the water.
“Going off your silence I'm gonna guess you agree,” Magnus laughed awkwardly.
Alec stopped moving, “I just don’t know why you let her get to you so much? Do you still like her?”
Had he made Alec think this was the case, surely not? “Alec, what? No, no way.”
Alec still hadn’t met his eyes while talking. “I thought so, but I just wanted to be sure,” He paused. “We’ve been flatmates for 2 years and I’ve barely heard of her, I knew she was your ex but that’s it, was your break up really that bad?” He turned to look at him.
Magnus sighed guessing there was no time like the present to get this over with. “Yeah, our whole relationship was," He continued, "It took me getting out to realize how manipulating she was.” he paused. “You know how I opened my dance studio 3 years ago?” Alec nodded. “I would have opened it sooner but somehow she always convinced me not to, she said it would ruin our relationship, but I think she just didn’t want me to succeed, she liked being better than me, I don’t know like I said it was a very toxic relationship. She’d always accuse me of cheating to the point where I wouldn't even hang out with friends I’d had since I was a kid. It was bad. One day I just decided I’d had enough and left and then one sweet year later I met you,” Magnus didn't want to see the pity in Alec's eyes so kept his eyes trained on the ripple of water his feet were making.
He felt Alec’s hand fit in his, “Hey,” Magnus gnawed at his bottom lip. “Hey,” Alec said again, trying to get Magnus to meet his gaze.
He relented, eventually looking up to see a sweet soft smile on his face, "Yeah?"
“Let’s make a deal,”
Magnus frowned, “A deal?”
“Yeah, If we see her again on this trip, we ignore her. We don’t let her ruin this for us. She’s already taken so much from you let’s not let her take anymore.” If Alec kept saying things like that he WAS going to kiss him, and never stop.
Magnus rested his head on Alec's shoulder, smiling. “Okay, deal.”
“Feel like a nighttime swim?” Alec asked, slipping into the water with his clothes on.
Magnus watched caught off guard “I’m already in my pj’s,” Magnus pouted.
“And?” Alec said moving between his legs.
Magnus' brain malfunctioned as Alec reached his arms up and around his waist. Words? He didn't know them. Alec was grinning up at him and Magnus was sitting there like a fish out of water. "What are you doing?" He managed to ask but why did his voice sound like that. This was embarrassing. Perhaps he should dive under the water only to collect himself and cool down.
"Something you're going to hate," Alec laughed to himself before lifting Magnus by the waist and dragging him under the water. Magnus didn’t let go, in fact, he curled his legs around Alec’s hips as they came up for air. “I can’t believe you did that,” Magnus gasped.
Alec chuckled reaching to wipe the hair out of Magnus’ eyes, his heart beating wildly. “Still surprised after this morning? C’mon baby, you should've known what was coming,” And if his heart didn’t leap when he called him baby. This was the first time he'd said it when it was just them.
“You’re absolutely right, I will be avoiding pools when I’m with you in the future,”
“You think that might be a bit hard considering we have one in our suite,” Alec looked too smug and god was it attractive, he needed to get out of this man’s arms before he did something he couldn’t take back. He dropped his legs from his waist and playfully shoved him, “Shut up,”
“Make me,” There was a challenge in his eyes.
Magnus smiled back, he was still close enough to touch the other man so he did, right where he knew he would get a reaction. Alec let out the loudest noise Magnus had ever heard as he tickled him. “Magnus, Magnus, no, I take it back, I’m sorry, it won’t happen again, please,” Did Alec just squeal? “Magnus, please,” He relented eventually and Alec sighed with relief. They were both just standing there breathing heavily looking into the eyes of each other. The urge to close the distance between them and kiss him was dangerously high so he splashed Alec one last time before turning around to exit the pool, “I’m going to bed, you coming?” He asked.
“Yeah, I’ll be there in a few minutes,”
Quietly, Magnus was thankful for those few minutes, so he could calm his beating heart. It’d only been one day and he’d thought about kissing Alec at least 100 times. It would only take one second for him to say screw it and do it. This was going to be harder than he thought.
Over the next few days, they were busy. They went sightseeing, found beautiful beaches, discovered caves, and stood under waterfalls. Alec even convinced Magnus to go ziplining through Jurassic Valley. There were countless cruises and sunsets, night walks along the beach, hand in hand. It was easy for Alec to forget this wasn’t all real.
Helen and Aline were with them for most of the activities. It was nice to have another couple along for the ride, they laughed, screamed, ate and drank a lot of alcohol. It all felt like something out of a movie, no one could be this happy, not forever.
The sun was setting on their sixth day in paradise as they walked along the beach, white sand scrunching between their toes. Alec linked their hands and felt the familiar wave of butterflies hit his belly. He wanted this, he wanted Magnus. He wanted this to be real. But he didn’t know how to even breach the subject without the fear of ruining the friendship they already had swallowing him whole.
“I’m looking forward to our cooking class tomorrow,” Magnus broke the comfortable silence between them. “What time do we have to be there?”
“It’s the morning class so I think 9 am?”
“9 am!? What, why so early?” Magnus grumbled.
“It was the only time available. I could go change to another day if you want?” Alec offered.
“No, no don’t be silly, I guess I’m not really the one who is going to struggle to get up in the morning anyway.”
Alec’s eyebrows raised slightly, “Meaning?” He prodded.
“Oh please, you act as if you haven’t been sleeping in most mornings. And are we forgetting the first morning here, Mr grouchy pants,”
Alec stopped walking and Magnus abruptly came to a standstill with their hands still joined. “I’m not grumpy,”
“No, of course not, dear,” He paused. “Grouchy was the word. Now c’mon Aline and Helen are probably waiting for us at the restaurant.”
“Take it back,” Alec still hadn’t moved.
Magnus bit his lip gently, “Oh baby, are you upset I called you grouchy? What would your students say if I asked what you were like?” Magnus came closer so they were only inches apart, which never failed to halt all function of Alec's lungs.
“They would call me delightful,” He said proudly. Honestly, he had no idea what a bunch of four-year-olds would say.
“Delightfully grouchy," Magnus laughed at himself, and Alec found it so cute he had to fight the smile threatening to burst.
"You know I’m just teasing,” Magnus kissed his cheek and whispered. “You’re so cute when you’re serious,”
He couldn't take another week of this it was bordering on torture.
......
As it turned out the next morning, he did in fact, not want to get out of bed, Magnus was right.
Alec was currently curled up in the blankets his hair ruffled and sticking up, his voice gravelly as he said “5 more minutes,” Magnus chuckled to himself reaching for the alarm to turn it off.
Rolling over Magnus admired the adorable view for a couple of seconds before running his hand through Alec’s messy locks murmuring a soft, “C’mon sleepy head, cooking class awaits,”
“I like that,” Alec’s voice sounded muffled against his pillow.
“Like what?”
“When you do that, when you run your fingers through my hair, it feels nice,”
Magnus caught himself smiling as he ran his fingers back and forth through Alec’s hair. “Like that?”
Alec hummed his approval.
“If you get up now, I’ll do it every morning,”
Alec bolted upright and was out of bed within a few seconds taking Magnus a few more to catch up before laughing hysterically.
“I’m up! Let’s do this cooking thing!” Alec clapped enthusiastically. He looked hilarious, his eyes were still half shut, his hair sticking up in every direction as he stumbled along to the bathroom rubbing his eyes.
Magnus lay back down in bed with a sigh of content, he was pretty sure he was in love with that man.
They made it to their class on time and were directed to a bench near the back of the room. Magnus was surprised to see so many people here early like this while on holiday, and soon enough the room was full. The class was 3 hours long as the teacher was going to take all of them through a few traditional Hawaiian dishes and give them some recipes to take home after it was all finished.
As they began Magnus found himself staring more at Alec than listening to the instructor up the front. He couldn’t help it, Alec looked adorable. Who knew he’d be so interested in something like this, and even though they were getting recipes at the end of this Alec still jotted down some of the things the instructor was saying on his little notepad; where did he even get a notepad from?
Alec looked at him like he could sense he was being stared at. “Are you paying attention?” He asked. Magnus smiled softly nodding but didn’t take his eyes off him. A shy smile spread along Alec’s lips before he turned his focus back to the front of the room. "Good,"
......
“Alexander, I don’t know what I’m doing,” Magnus stated as he mixed something with something, he couldn’t tell you what
Alec stepped up beside him, “That’s 'cause you weren’t paying attention,” Magnus looked up at him innocently, his eyes big. “I got distracted,”
Alec ignored his implication and continued with the mess that Magnus had made. “You only put the coconut flakes and panko crumbs in here nothing else,” Magnus nodded vigilantly.
“Uh, sweetheart,” Magnus paused “You have some flour on your cheek,” Alec tried to wipe it off but only ended up making it worse. Magnus laughed, covering his mouth. “A little help would be nice,” Alec sulked.
Magnus grabbed a paper towel and made sure it was slightly damp as he wiped away the flour. He was pretty sure they were far behind everyone else in the room, but honestly he didn’t care not when Alec was looking at him like that.
“I remember being young and in love,” Someone awwed from beside them, they both turned to see an older lady staring at them. “It goes by so quickly, make sure not to waste even one moment,” She beamed and turned back to her cooking. Alec snapped out of his haze and got back to it as well, while Magnus was still caught up on the woman’s words. Was he wasting time pretending with Alec when in reality it could all be real? He shook his head, it was too early in the morning for his mind to run this deep. He’d think about it later and focus on helping Alec cook or he was sure Alec would kill him.
With 10 minutes to spare they managed to scramble together all their meals, and they looked pretty good if you didn’t look at the mess they made on the bench behind them. “We did it!” Magnus beamed. “Well, I helped a little,”
Alec turned to him, “It was close, but we did it.” Alec’s flour-covered hands grasped each side of Magnus’s face as he kissed him on the forehead, and god if Magnus didn’t panic, for one second, he thought he was going to kiss him on the lips. Alec pulled back, grinning. “The real question is are we brave enough to try what we made,”
“Let’s do it,” Magnus picked up one coconut covered shrimp and hand-fed it to Alec, god they were that couple weren’t they. “Thoughts? Shall we keep our day jobs?” Magnus asked.
“You know this is actually really good, but yeah I definitely think we should keep our day jobs,”
To Magnus’ surprise, Alec lifted a piece of shrimp and did the same for him. He hoped no one in the room was watching; they were being disgustingly cute. “Mmmm, that is good,”
They thanked the cooking instructor for the lesson after they tidied up their things and left to explore the rest of their day.
They didn’t do much that day. Helen and Aline were off doing their own thing today, and he and Alec hadn’t really planned much other than the cooking lesson and dinner with the girls.
On a whim, Alec suggested hiring a scooter and exploring the island. It was the best idea he’d ever had. Magnus clung to Alec’s waist as they travelled the roads discovering little bays, exploring the shops, and eating gelato, snapping pictures everywhere along the way. By the time they made it back to the resort, Magnus was exhausted and was about to fall asleep as soon as he sat down on the couch in the living room.
Alec sat next to him with concern written all over his face, “Are you alright?” He even checked his temperature with the back of his hand. This man, Magnus didn’t think he could fall more in love and then bam he would do things like this.
Magnus smiled. “I’m fine, just exhausted,”
“If you want to stay in instead of eating out with the girls, we can? I don’t mind,”
“No, you go, have fun, I’m probably going to fall asleep any minute now anyway,”
Alec cradled his chin rubbing his thumb along his skin, his eyes softening ever so slightly as he said, “Please eat something before you do,” Magnus nodded back. Alec continued. “Okay, I’m going to go get ready, but do you want me to make you a drink before I go, maybe a herbal tea or something?”
“No, sweetheart, I’m okay, but thank you for asking,” Magnus stroked Alec’s cheek slowly before getting up himself to get changed. Alec soon followed.
“My, my, you look very handsome tonight,” Magnus grinned as he lay in bed watching Alec stroll out of the bathroom. “To be fair you look handsome every night,” Was that a blush creeping up the other man’s cheeks? “Thank you,”
Alec walked over to him, “You sure you don’t want to come?” As if in answer his body betrayed him and he yawned at that exact moment. Alec laughed, “Messaged received,”
“Have fun,” Magnus mumbled between his next yawn.
“I will. See you later,” The next thing that happened caught Magnus completely off guard; he wasn’t even sure it had happened or if it was just his sleep-deprived state playing tricks on him? No, it was definitely real. Alec just kissed him. On the lips, and left the room.
What the hell did he just do?
He wasn’t even thinking when he did it, he just, did it. Like it was an everyday thing they did. This whole pretending thing was very much not pretending anymore. It never had been. Now he had to sit through an hour-long meal with his two friends when all he could think about was that stupid kiss he'd let slip. He wanted to bang his head against the table but gathered that would gain some concerned stares.
"Magnus not joining us?" Helen asked.
"Not tonight, he was basically falling asleep as I was leaving,"
"You tiring him out Alec, huh?" Aline winked before laughing. "Sorry, that was so inappropriate."
Alec chuckled. "No, it's okay. I think today was just a little draining for him. We ended up scooting around most of the island."
"Damn that sounds fun," Aline replied. She looked at Helen, "Maybe we should do that before we leave?" She asked.
"Anything you want," Helen leaned over peaking her wife on the lips. And just like that, he was thinking about Magnus again.
To say he was bad company during dinner was an understatement. He wanted to apologize for barely talking but then he would have to tell them why which would lead them to know the truth. God how had they dug themselves this deep into a hole. Aline and Helen had been talking about meeting up when they were back in the US. Magnus and he couldn't just fake it every time. They were screwed.
Too much thinking tonight. He was starting to get a headache and told the girls just that, apologizing and saying he was going to skip dessert but that he'd see them in a couple of days if not tomorrow.
They said goodnight and wished Magnus to feel better in the morning.
He found Magnus passed out in bed, somewhat thankful he didn’t have to talk to him, at least not tonight.
Things went from bad to worse when he woke and realized Magnus was gone. Alec got up and checked throughout the suite but couldn't find him anywhere. Worry mixed with dread settled in the pit of his stomach. Where was he?

Chapter Text
Alec looked so peaceful laying next to him, Magnus would have lay there all morning, happily undisturbed, but unfortunately, someone from the hotel had rung last night asking to come down to reception when they could the next morning. Case in point, Magnus, begrudgingly, left the warm sheets and the handsome man among them to see what was going on.
On the way down to reception, Magnus anxiously overthought every scenario that was about to play out. None good. He wanted to be anywhere but here. Favouring being back in bed with Alec. Perhaps they could talk about that little thing Alec did last night. Oh yeah, kiss him! it was only a peck. Short and sweet, but the rush of feeling Alec's lips against his was nothing of the sort. It was lingering and demanding, wanting nothing more than to feel that again. Preferably for a longer period of time, if ever got so lucky.
“Hi, I’m Magnus from the honeymoon suite. Someone rang last night asking for me to come to the reception desk?”
The receptionist looked puzzled until something clicked and she reached for the phone saying, “Ah, yes let me just make a call and she’ll be right down,”
She? Who was this she, and why did she want to talk to him? Something felt off, wrong. Everything in him fought not to sprint back to the safe confines of his and Alec's suite. Taking a seat in the foyer he anxiously waited. Maybe he should've woken Alec and brought him. Screw how peaceful he looked.
“So happy you got my message,”
Every nerve in Magnus’ body went on high alert, his heart plunging to his stomach. No. This was not happening. no, no, no. He was dreaming, he had to be. There was no way she was about ruin another day of his. Nope. He blinked multiple times as if it would somehow teleport him back to his room. Nothing happened. Fuck
“What is this about?" He asked.
“Oh, you didn’t know? My partner's parents own this resort,” How the hell would he know that? He didn't keep tabs on her, he didn't care what she was doing.
Magnus wished to be back in bed. He wished he never left. “What’s that got to do with anything? Why are you even here? Can’t you just let me live in peace? It's not too much to ask is it?"
Camille sat in the seat across from him, her smile bordering on evil, “It has to do with everything, you see when you told me that man was your husband the other day, something didn’t feel right so I looked up your booking,”
Magnus blanched feeling sick to his stomach. “You did what?” He'd never felt rage like this before, he'd never felt violated like this either. Not only his privacy but Alec's too. He was going to vomit. "That has to be illegal," He replied, heart pounding.
“Perhaps, but sweetie no one would believe you if you tried anything, the legal fees alone would crush you. Surely you don't make that much with that little dance studio of yours,”
"This isn't even about me anymore, you violated Alec's privacy! Go after me all you want, god fucking knows why, but don't," He paused levelling his gaze with hers. "Don't bring Alec into your little games," She smirked like she always did when she riled him up to this point. To the point where he wanted to cry, where he wanted to slip into a quiet room and shove his face in a pillow and yell. It was like she got enjoyment out of seeing him like this. It made him feel like he was losing control like he was going mental. Always on the defence, grappling to grab a hold of where the conversation was going, to get a hold of his emotions. He didn't even care if she found out the truth he just wanted her to leave him alone.
Camille went on like it was a normal conversation, completely unfazed. “Anyway as I was saying something didn’t feel right, my fiance has been pretty busy lately, you know running a resort and all," She said it like it was her accomplishment. "And I was feeling a little bored, so I decided to do some digging. When I saw the original booking for someone named Maia and her would-be husband, I knew my suspicions were correct. Your name only appeared on the booking a little over two weeks ago followed by your so-called husband's name. But you’re not married at all are you.”
Magnus wanted to claw his hair out, this was all so pointless, so stupid, it was like she said, she was bored and wanted to do something with her time, so she'd done what she did best. Humiliate him, make him feel small. “Why does this even matter to you?" He sighed. "Why do you care? You're engaged, shouldn't you be planning a wedding or something. It's none of your business if Alec and I are married or not.” He wouldn't give her the satisfaction of confirming her suspicions.
“Has your life really been so sad and pathetic lately that you've resorted to faking a marriage with whoever will give you attention, really Magnus? Even for you, that's unbearably sad” Camille snickered.
He wanted to yell back, to defend his reasoning, to tell her he wasn't sad, he wasn't pathetic. He was just enjoying a much needed holiday after successfully running his dance studio for 3 years. He was happy, most of the time. He wouldn't let her manipulate him into trying to defend himself. He had nothing to defend not when it came to her. He could stand up right now and walk away. He wouldn't let her take away those 3 years of growth of trying his hardest to pull himself from that cycle of abuse, because that's what it was. It was verbal, emotional abuse. And he'd gotten out, and he could leave right now. "I hope you're happy in your life, Camille I really do. I still don't fully understand why you needed to do this? To prove you were right? For your ego? I don't know. What I do know is that I love Alec, he's my world, he treats me far better than you ever did, you don't even come close. You can speculate all you want whether we are married I really don't care. I'm done with this conversation, and I'm done with you. I never want to see you again." He got up and left without turning back. He didn't care if she knew they weren't married. She couldn't do anything, really, all she would look like was a petty ex.
When he made it back to his room he did exactly what he wanted, walking right past Alec, not bothering to look at him, knowing if he did he would most likely breakdown in his arms, and as much as he wanted to, he couldn't, he didn't want to be that vulnerable with him right now. What he needed was to collect himself and maybe scream. So, grabbing a pillow from the bed he entered the bathroom and locked the door. Sliding down to the floor he lifted his knees to his chest and yelled directly into the pillow.
A tiny hesitant knock sounded behind the door. "Magnus?" He couldn't reply, not yet. Tasting the salt of his tears on his lips, he pinched his eyes together, when did he start crying? This was so embarrassing. Alec had never seen him like this. Magnus prided himself on portraying a front that consisted of him seeming put together, for the most part, he was. Until things like this, his horrible past coming back to slap him in the face. "Magnus?" Alec asked again. He sounded so concerned, so worried. "Is this about last night, cause I---" before Alec could finish that sentence Magnus had the door open, "Honey no, it's not about last night, I promise."
Alec wiped away a stray tear that was sliding down Magnus' cheek, his eyes softening with worry, "What's wrong?" God, that question always had a way of making everything worse. Making all the emotions he'd tried so hard to push down come to the surface. Shit. Turning his head away from Alec's intense gaze he tried his best to push them down. Alec caressed his cheek one last time before dropping his hand, "You know what, you don't have to tell me, not until you're ready. And when you are, I ordered you some french toast and maple syrup with a side of bacon."
Magnus looked up at him, eyes wide. That was his favourite. He said as much out loud. Alec smiled, "I know, why do you think I ordered it."
This whole morning was throwing him for a loop. Experiencing feelings on drastically different levels all at once. Taking a deep much-needed breath Magnus finally smiled back, "I'll be out after I have a shower and calm down a little."
"Okay, and I'll be out here, waiting."
The shower had helped considerably giving him some much needed time to gather his bearings to tell Alec what had happened. He wished he could forget it even happened but he couldn't not when it came to Alec. Alec deserved to know, especially because his privacy had also been breached.
Alec was sitting on the couch when Magnus entered the lounge, the other man was playing with his food more than he was eating it, looking lost in thought. Next to him on a tray was his french toast, it smelled divine. Settling in close to Alec, Magnus rested his head on his shoulder whispering a quick thank you before tucking into his food. An easy silence between them as they ate.
“I missed you this morning,” Alec said.
“You did?”
“Yeah, I guess I’ve gotten used to waking up next to you,”
A small smile crept its way onto Magnus' lips. So had he.
“I didn’t want to leave this morning but last night someone rang asking me to come to the front desk.” He guessed now was a good a time as any to get this over with.
Alec got that little crease between his brows and Magnus had to fight the urge to brush it away with his thumb. “Does this have something to do with why you were upset earlier?”
Magnus nodded. “I didn't know what to expect when I got there and I probably should've brought you with me, but anyway,” He paused playing with the seam of the couch cushion, "Camille was the one who wanted to see me,"
“What? What on earth for?"
“Yeah, so turns out she’s dating the son of the parents who own this place and thought that allowed her to go digging through our booking. I don’t know how but she came to the conclusion that this wasn't real.” He motioned between them.
“She did what?" Alec almost yelled. "That’s a breach of our privacy, what the hell is wrong with her?”
“I know,” He sighed, "Trust me I was just as furious as you. I'm so sorry I've dragged you into this somehow. I just wanted us to have a nice holiday and now this,"
Alec reached for his hands, "Hey look, you don't need to apologize, okay, you're not the one that invaded our privacy. You're not the one who caused any of this, this is all her. Okay. Don't you dare take any blame for it okay?"
Magnus didn't know how much he needed to hear that until he did, he practically flopped against Alec's side. "Okay, okay, yeah."
"Good," Alec turned to him, placing his hand over his thigh. “What else did she say to you?”
Magnus looked away. “Nothing important,”
“What did she say?”
“It doesn’t matter,”
“It does if you’re believing it,”
“I’m not.” But even he himself didn’t believe the words he spoke.
Alec cupped the side of his face turning his head to look at him again. “You don’t have to tell me, not if you don’t want to. But whatever she said, however, she made you feel, it’s a reflection of her, not you.” Magnus shrugged trying to avert his gaze.
“I can't help but feel like our trips been somewhat ruined now,” He spoke softly.
“It’s not if we don’t let it.” Alec paused, brushing his thumb along his cheek. "I hate that she’s gotten in your head like this,”
“I hate it too, I’m sorry I’m really trying to just push it out of my head, but”
“She hit where it hurts, I know.” Alec pulled him into a hug and Magnus accepted it without restraint letting himself be held. Alec whispered along his shoulder “I have an idea,”
Magnus pulled back, “What?”
“Let’s stop pretending,”
Magnus sat up straight, “Huh?”
“Let’s stop pretending, we are no longer fake husbands, we are just two really close friends on a trip together seeing wherever this goes.” Magnus fiddled with his fake wedding band. He’d gotten used to it being there.
“We’d have to come clean to the girls?” He asked.
“Yeah, I think so. It felt wrong lying to them anyway.” Alec replied. He was right.
“Okay, no more pretending.”
Alec nodded. “No more pretending,”
“Hey about the girls,” Alec added. “They mentioned some sunrise we have to see before we go. We were thinking we could go in a couple of days before they leave?”
“Is that like at the beach or something.”
“No, I think it’s up a hill and a little bit of a walk but it's worth it, from what I've heard.”
Magnus rested his head on Alec’s shoulder not wanting to let go just yet. “Okay, that sounds good.” Alec surprised him and kissed him on the back of his head before pushing his breakfast in front of him. “Now eat the rest of this, it’ll make you feel better,”
Magnus chuckled. “Sometimes your kindergarten self comes out, you know,”
Alec rolled his eyes. “Sorry, I’m concerned for my friend.” Friend. Right. They were just friends now.
Magnus ate up, and somehow he did feel slightly better but he put that down more to Alec’s company than the french toast. “So what do you want to do today?” He asked, swallowing the last of his food.
“I don't know I was thinking maybe we could hang around the beach maybe?”
“Actually, yeah I’m down for that. Just a nice relaxing day sounds perfect after this morning”
“If I see Camille I want to give her a piece of my mind,” Alec grunted.
Magnus placed his hand over Alec’s thigh. “No, let’s just ignore her, I never want to be around her again if I don’t have to.”
Alec sighed. “Fine, but I’m still really mad,”
“I know, and I appreciate you being mad in my honour,”
“I hate that she hurt you all those years ago. I hate it so much,”
Magnus smiled, he was sweet. “I hate it too, but I’ve managed to heal somewhat from that and that’s a huge help to you, and my dance studio,”
A shy smile grew on the other man’s face. “It had nothing to do with me, but everything to do with you, and your strength and resilience to bounce back.”
Magnus felt his eyes soften, and his smile grow wider, Alec had the power to make him an absolute mess for the best reasons. Not many people have made his heart swoop and skin feel tingly all at the same time. One day he was just going to let it slip that he cared for the man and see where that got him.
“Thank you,” Magnus sighed a breath of relief he didn’t know he had been holding all these years. He didn’t realize how much the other man's validation meant to him until now. He guessed after being with Camille those insecurities had somewhat crawled back. Shoving those emotions away, for now, he got up and headed for the bedroom. “Let’s go to the beach.”
When he heard Magnus come back that morning, he had never felt relief like that before. He really thought that maybe the kiss had freaked Magnus out. Sadly that relief only lasted a few moments when he'd seen his face pale and tearful, it only got worse when he told him about Camille. It took a lot for Alec to really get angry but it seemed this woman seemed to know every button to push. If he could he wanted to protect Magnus from ever having to face her again. That man had been through enough and he'd do anything to make him happy, and see a smile back on his face.
Finding a nice quiet spot they lay their towels down settling into the beach bed. They were both pretty quiet for the next hour or so just soaking up the sun when Magnus broke the silence. “How are we going to tell Aline and Helen?”
Alec saw Magnus play with his fake wedding band again. Neither of them had taken them off just yet. Alec knew his reason. He didn’t know Magnus’
“I guess like ripping off a bandaid? All at once.”
“God,” Magnus sighed covering his face, “I really hope they don’t hate us after this,”
Alec’s phone buzzed next to him
Aline:
Not to be clingy or anything but what are you two doing today?
Alec:
We’re just down by the beach, will probably spend the day here. More than welcome to join us. We are next to the bar.
“Looks like we will find out soon enough,” Alec said.
Magnus sat up, “Huh?”
Aline:
See you down there soon!
“They’re coming to join us on the beach,” He added.
Magnus swung his legs off the bed leaning his elbows on his knees. Head in his hands. “Oh god, why do I feel sick?”
Alec mirrored his movements. “Tell me about it. I’ve known them since High School.”
“I’m so sorry I made you lie to them,”
“We are coming clean, it’s okay,”
“It’s not though,”
“Maybe not, but it’s too late to go back now,” Alec peeled Magnus’ hands off his face and held them in his palms. “I’m gonna get a drink, do you want anything? Maybe a cocktail?”
Magnus took a deep breath, “Actually, yeah, yeah, that would be nice,” He added, “You choose what kind,”
Alec was back with the drinks within a couple of minutes, in which Magnus had discarded his shirt and was rubbing sunscreen down his stomach. No, he would not stare.
“Here you go,” Alec handed him a blue Hawaii.
“Well if that doesn’t look delicious. Where do I get one of those?”
Alec smiled, “Hey, Aline. Hey, Helen.”
“Hey guys,” Helen turned toward Magnus, “We missed you last night, you feeling better today?”
Magnus looked up from sipping his drink, “Mmm, yes, feeling much better thank you,”
Helen and Aline got settled, while he and Magnus sent each other looks as if to say when are we gonna do this, to which one of them would just shrug. Yeah, this was going great so far.
Alec skulled his drink. Liquid courage and all that. Magnus followed suit. “Those were good, I’ll get us another one,” Magnus jumped up grabbing Alec’s used glass. “Girls, do you want anything?” He asked.
“Oh yes please, we will have whatever you two just had,” Helen replied.
And he was gone, leaving him alone with the girls. Aline sat in front of him cross-legged on the bed. “Everything okay between you two? Things seem like I don't know, tense?”
How was she able to pick up on that? “Uh, we are fine, truly, but we do have something to tell you both,”
Aline frowned. “That doesn't sound daunting at all.”
Alec laughed self consciously. Magnus was back a few minutes later carrying a tray of drinks “For you, my lovely,” He said as he gave each drink to the girls, “And for you, my dear,” He passed Alec his drink. That’s when Alec got a closer look at Magnus, his eyes looked half glazed.
Before Magnus could turn back around he grabbed him by the waist to stop him, “Did you drink something else while up there?” He asked.
Magnus scoffed. “Never could get anything past you could I,” He chuckled. “May have snuck a couple of shots, just to numb the nerves swimming in my belly at the moment,” Alec could understand that. But he also had a feeling he was trying to numb something else that had happened today. Like what Camille had said to him.
“Okay, but let's take it easy for the rest of the day, yeah?” Magnus tried to turn away again but Alec tapped the spot next to him, “Sit, it’ll be easier with you next to me,”
Magnus hummed his reply. How many shots did he take exactly?
“Hey um, Aline, Helen, can we talk for a second?”
Both the girls looked somewhat concerned.
“What’s going on?” Helen asked, sitting across from them, Aline in tow.
“We uh, need to come clean about something,”
"Oh my god are you actually fugitives on the run from the FBI?" Aline asked sarcasm rich in her voice.
Alec held back a laugh. "Nothing quite so outrageous."
"Too many crime shows for this one I think" Helen bopped Aline's nose making her wrinkle her face.
"We aren't actually married." Magnus blurted. Widening his eyes in surprise, Alec added. "I was going to ease into it but I guess he had other ideas." He laughed, be that uncomfortably
Magnus turned to him "You said like a band-aid." He did.
Looking back at the girls he dreaded what was going to come next. "Just one question. Is there a reason you lied?" Helen asked.
Alec opened his mouth to reply, but Magnus cut him off. "It's my fault really. This holiday was actually meant to be a friend of mines honeymoon but long story short that didn't work out and she offered me the trip, so I dragged Alec along. They thought we were married at the front desk so I didn't correct them. And then you two popped out of nowhere and I'm pretty sure Alec was going to correct you that night but I jumped in first and got us stuck in this lie. So yeah. Not married." Well, that was a mouthful.
Looking to Magnus with concern he wondered what was going on inside his head? He sounded like he was spiralling. Pushing that aside for a later conversation he said "He didn't drag me into it I could've stopped it all at any moment but I didn't either." He looked at the girls. "I'm sorry, I feel awful for lying to you basically every day."
"So are you two actually together or is that also not real?" Well, that was a loaded question. And he had no idea how to answer it and judging by Magnus' silence neither did he. "We aren't together romantically, it was all for the ruse, an act." but everything I felt was real. he didn't add that part though. Out the corner of his eye, he could see Magnus who had been awfully quiet since his long spiel earlier, and when he turned his gaze to him Magnus snatched his head away looking in the other direction but Alec caught a small glimpse of something akin to hurt in his eyes. What fuck was this day.
Magnus cleared his throat. "Yeah, none of it was real." his voice so detached his heart ached. Those words felt like a knife slicing through his chest, leaving it in tatters.
Alec shook it off for now continuing his conversation with the girls. "I understand if you're upset or mad, and don't want to see us ever again. I'm sorry."
"I mean yeah it is kinda annoying to learn we have been deceived but," Aline paused. "It's not the end of the world. It doesn't change our friendship, but damn you really had us both fooled" Aline finished looking between them both like she was trying to figure something out. Helen added. "Thanks for coming clean though, that does mean something."
"We would've had to at some point right," he laughed under his breath. Magnus was still looking out over the ocean.
Everything that had grown between them, that they'd experienced over the past week and a bit felt like it had all vanished within the span of a couple of minutes and he didn't know how to backtrack. A big part of him wanted nothing more but to pull Magnus into his arms and hold him, and another part told him to give the man some space. It had been a big day emotionally and he didn't want to upset him further.
Magnus stood up snapping out of whatever world he'd been in. "Well, I'm getting another drink." Wait when had he finished the one he just bought?
"Magnus-"
"You want another one?" He asked
Alec looked at his barely touched cocktail. "No, I'm fine, thanks"
"Okay then," and then he was off.
He and the girls watched him go. "Is he okay?" Helen asked
"I honestly don't know. It's been a long day." He wasn't sure if Magnus wanted him to share the stuff about Camille. So he didn't
Aline on the other hand was still caught up on their earlier conversation. "No, but honestly, none of that," She paused. "I guess fake relationship was real? You two looked so happy together, I just can't wrap my head around it"
"I mean we do live together and we did meet the way he described but the relationship part of it, yeah, that was fake."
"No, no, I'm not asking if the title of the relationship was fake I'm asking if the feelings you clearly both were displaying for each other were fake? Cause I don't know how one could fake that."
Alec sighed.
"Baby, maybe drop it for now," Helen added softly. Alec smiled at her but Aline was right, "My feelings for him have never been fake."
"Then why don't you tell him that!?" Aline exclaimed.
"I don't know if he feels the same." He sighed again rubbing his temple "Sometimes I think maybe there's a chance and then there are times he closes off from like just now."
Helen smiled at him sympathetically. "Honey, I think he did that just now because he was hurt."
"I didn't mean to hurt him. I don't even know how I hurt him?"
Aline rolled her eyes. "Seriously Alec, you weren't this stupid in high school were you?" Helen hid her smile behind her hand.
Alec raised an eyebrow. "What, you're saying he cares about me?"
"I'm saying he more than cares for you, you dimwit."
Helen chuckled. "I think a nicer way to put it is I think Magnus was hurt just now because maybe he also wasn't faking his feelings and when you said it was part of the act, that maybe, he took that as you saying you don't feel that way about him." Well, when she put it like that. Alec looked to the bar searching for Magnus but couldn't find him anywhere between all the people. He'd been gone for some time.
"I'm gonna go look for him."
"Yes, see, there's the smart Alec I remember."
"I'm questioning this friendship all of a sudden." He smiled half rolling his eyes at Aline.
"You missed me, it's okay, you can admit it."
Alec shook his head laughing as he left to go find Magnus. He couldn't help but worry although it seemed his worry was misplaced. Alec found him sitting at the bar nursing his drink when a woman sidled up next to him. That was when a pang of jealousy hit his chest.
Magnus knew he was being petty sitting at the bar and not going back to the others, but he just needed a couple of minutes alone. If only to nurse his broken heart. Okay so maybe he was being a tad dramatic. But hearing those words from Alec's mouth "It was all part of the act," was a slap to the face a blow to his heart. He had to get away, he wouldn't let him see the hurt on his face he was sure was evident. The only option, to forget it all with alcohol. Not the wisest decision but he was feeling sorry for himself so sue him. Not to mention he hadn't gotten drunk yet and damn they were on holiday so why the hell not?
"Hey handsome, why the long face?" Someone, a woman with long light brown hair sat on the stool next to him.
"Been a long day." He mused.
"Can I buy you another drink?" Technically he and Alec had ended their whole pretend thing and if he wanted to he could flirt back but he just didn't have it in him. Fiddling with the fake wedding band still on his finger. He hadn't taken it off yet.
"Married," Magnus replied looking at the girl.
"Happily?" The girl asked again. Magnus had to hide his shock, was this girl for real?
That was when he felt Alec's hand at his back startling him, jump-starting his heart. "Baby, there you are." What was he doing?
Magnus just went with it, for now, smiling up at him. "Here I am."
"Come back to the beach, we miss you."
"I was only gone a few minutes." Magnus scoffed.
Alec wrapped his arms around his waist. It was cruel of him really to do this when he'd just shattered his heart. "Call me clingy."
Magnus leaned back in his arms as Alec looked at the girl. "Maybe try another married man, this one is taken." Oh. This certainly was a different side to Alec. He must've been imagining the jealousy in his tone.
The girl apologized, disappearing quickly. As soon as she was out of sight he pushed himself from Alec's arms. "Thanks but I didn't need saving." Magnus jumped off his stool grabbing his drink
Alec stood there, bewilderment written clearly on his face. "Sorry, I just thought."
"You thought wrong."
There was no need to be so rude but they had just decided to stop pretending. And then he goes and does that literally minutes after saying everything had been fake. He wasn't mad at Alec more than he was mad at himself for getting hurt through all of this. The whole day, this, plus Camille. It was getting on top of him. He just needed to take a breath from Alec, if he'd let him.
Alec reached for his hand, but Magnus was just out of reach. "Can we talk?"
"About what? There's nothing to talk about." Magnus replied
"But there is." Alec pleaded.
"Fine, but not today, I just need to forget today. Can you give me that?"
Alec nodded. "Yes, of course, anything."
"Thank you. Now, we should go back to the beach before the girls get suspicious." He was sure they already were.
The rest of the day was what could only be described as tense. Alec was acting like he was walking around on eggshells while the girls bless them, tried their best to fill the awkward silences but eventually gave up and went for a swim on the beach.
"When are we doing the sunrise trek?" Magnus asked sipping on his 4th cocktail. He was definitely starting to feel tipsy.
"Day after next" Alec replied.
"Oh thank god, I was worried I'd have to do it hungover." Magnus giggled to himself.
Alec smiled in return but it didn't reach his eyes.
And well, Magnus found himself missing that smile, the one where his eye's crinkled and shone with joy. Maybe he could squash the bad atmosphere he'd put between them, at least for tonight until they had that chat, Alec so badly wanted. "Alec, i-
"I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable at the bar earlier. I'm sorry if I said something to hurt you." Alec sat up turning to him, his eyes wide with sorrow. He looked drained like he'd spent the last few hours running himself ragged thinking it over in his head.
"You didn't make me feel uncomfortable it's fine."
"So I hurt you somehow, that's it isn't it?"
Magnus sighed shaking his head. His answer was yes but he couldn't say that out loud, not if he didn't want a longer conversation, and he didn't. Not today. "Look, I guess my conversation with Camille took a larger toll on me than I thought, I'm sorry if I've taken that out on you."
Furrowing his brows Alec looked like he somewhat believed him but there's was a tiny bit of scepticism still lingering. Thankfully, before Alec could reply the girls ran up the beach giggling and out of breath. "Hey you two, there's a DJ down a bit on the beach. There are heaps of people dancing. Let's go!" Aline exclaimed excitedly.
Magnus jumped up instantly, he could definitely do that. "Count me in!"
"Alec?" Helen asked.
He looked hesitant but not for long and gathered up their stuff moving further down the beach.
"You guys go have fun, I'll finish setting up and join you," Alec said, laying out all their stuff.
Magnus wasn't about to argue, racing away with the girls. The alcohol he'd been drinking during the day buzzing in his veins making him throw his head back laughing as they made their way to the middle of the crowd. This was exactly what he needed after today.
Yelling over the crowd he said to the girls. "Sorry if I've been moody today."
"It's fine, don't worry about it. Let's just have fun and try to drag Alec into this." Aline beamed, grabbing Helen's hands dancing with her. In times like this, it would have been great to still be pretending with Alec. Looking around he saw couples or maybe even just singles dancing with each other, he suddenly felt incredibly lonely in a sea of people.
That was when someone placed their hands on both his shoulders, turning he found Alec smiling at him. "You look like you could use a dance partner." He smiled shyly.
This is what he did for a living. He danced. But never once had he danced with Alec, not for lack of trying, the other man just always declined.
"The day has finally come! Alec Lightwood is going to dance with me" Magnus bellowed over the music.
Alec laughed. "Don't get too excited"
"Too late!" Magnus grabbed Alec's hands, pulling him closer as they drifted toward Helen and Aline who were dancing wildly.
A couple of shots and many dances later they were all sweaty and covered in sand. Alec looked fucking incredible or maybe it was the alcohol-induced haze making him seem that way. No. Alec had always been hot as fuck Magnus reminded himself. But somehow he looked extra good tonight. The sun was setting casting a warm golden glow over his face, making the hazel in his eyes pop. His hair curling at his ears, wet with sweat and sea spray as he pushed it off his forehead. Alec had lost his shirt a while ago and wow what a sight to behold, he'd seen him shirtless countless times, but it was different up close when he was dancing with the man.
Alec caught him staring. Whoops. But he wasn't the only one who was admiring the view as he caught many men and women casting looks his way. Feeling annoyed he could no longer let others know Alec was his, he leaned toward Alec saying in his ear. "I'm going to get another drink, you want one?"
"Sure!" He yelled back.
Magnus pushed his way through the crowd safely making it to the edge of the dance floor.
When he came back he tried to find Alec in the crowd but he couldn't see him anywhere. His heart sunk. Had he gone off with someone?
"Hey you," Alec said behind him. "Looking for someone?" Magnus turned to catch him smiling wide and oh so beautiful it knocked the breath out of him.
"Oh, you know just this 7ft giant, shirtless, kinda sexy, gorgeous smile. You seen him?"
Alec peeked over his head looking into the crowd. "Hmm, nope can't see any giants from here,"
Magnus chuckled passing him his drink. "These are dangerously good!" Alec sighed taking a sip.
"I know right, we should probably think about eating something before we get too far gone and end up with alcohol poisoning."
Alec took another sip. "Yeah, I don't like the sound of that."
"Do you know where the girls are?" Magnus asked.
"Yeah, they're back at our seats taking a break." Perfect Magnus thought.
They had a quick dinner filling up for the rest of the night. The girls decided to call it a night and head to their room. "How about you?" Magnus asked. "You up for staying out a little longer?" It was still relatively early.
"Yeah sure why not, want another drink?"
"Absolutely."
They got another drink each while Magnus also added an extra couple shots to his order downing them before they ran back to the dance party on the beach. It didn't take long for the alcohol to take effect. Oh yeah, he was well and truly drunk now.
The music slowed unexpectedly, everyone grabbing their significant other and pulling them close. Magnus held back a giddy giggle as Alec wrapped his arm around him pulling him close, Magnus had no choice but to lift his arms up and around Alec's neck. Leaning into Alec's arms he felt warm and safe. His heart that had been hurting all day was forgotten, all he felt now was bliss. Humming a contented sigh, he rested the side of his head on Alec's shoulder as they rocked back and forth. He could fall asleep here if he let himself but then he wouldn't be able to memorize every heartbeat that bounced against his, or every soft kiss to his forehead as they held each other, or the feeling that ripped through him as Alec drew slow circles over his back creating goosebumps along his skin. He wouldn't remember the way Alec shivered as he slid his hand into his hair stroking just below his ear, or the way he closed his eyes and pulled him closer.
"Can we stay like this forever?" Magnus asked.
"Happily." Alec sighed.
Magnus knew he shouldn't be doing this. He knew he shouldn't be falling into his arms and playing the what if's in his head. Today had been such a rollercoaster. He just wanted to forget everything and enjoy this moment of serenity. All inhibition, gone.
Magnus leaned back so they were face to face. His head spinning slightly. Okay so maybe he'd had too much to drink. Smiling a boyish smile, he said. "Hey"
"Hey," Alec returned his smile, caressing the back of his fingers along Magnus' cheek. He caught something shiny reflecting off his hand and that was when he realized Alec hadn't removed his fake wedding band either.
Magnus reached for his hand somewhat blindly his eyesight a little blurry from the alcohol. "You're still wearing it."
Alec looked down at where their hands joined. "I guess I kinda like the idea of people thinking I'm married to you." Magnus looked up taken by his words.
Was this some warped reality his brain had concocted under the influence or was it all real? He looked into the other man's eyes searching for the answer, for anything, to confirm what Magnus felt was mutual. He searched his face his eyes darting to his lips and back to his eyes. God, he wanted to kiss him. He wanted Alec to kiss him. He wanted them to kiss each other.
Kiss me. Kiss me. Kiss me. Kiss me, until my lips go numb. Kiss me, until our hearts beat as one. Kiss me, until the world fades, and it's just you and me. Kiss me. He thought to himself. He could feel himself gravitating towards Alec like he was a magnet but he stopped suddenly when alarm flashed in the other man's eye's, he must've realized what he was going to do. Well. That was embarrassing. With that sobering thought, Magnus stepped away exiting the crowd of dancing people. "We should go,"
"Huh?" Alec blinked.
"It's been a long day we should sleep. Plus I don't feel so good." He rubbed his head and yeah the ground was spinning.
Alec was there in an instant wrapping his arm around him holding him up as they walked. He was going to regret all of this in the morning.
One minute Magnus looked like he was going to kiss him and the next he was walking away with a frown on his face. Alec couldn't keep up.
But by god he wanted to kiss Magnus, he was going to as well, until he remembered they were both pretty drunk, Magnus very much so, and he'd panicked not wanting their first proper kiss to be one where neither of them would potentially remember it. If he was going to kiss Magnus he wanted the other man to know first and foremost that he meant it. Holding nothing back, no pretending.
Magnus was mumbling some nonsense he couldn't make out as they made their way back to their room.
"I feel like I'm in a dream" Magnus blurted.
"A good one?" Alec asked
"Hmm" Magnus rested his finger on his chin in thought. "To be determined."
Alec laughed. "How's your head feeling?" There was nothing like sobering up quickly when you had to help a drunken friend home. Which was the case for Alec.
"Not nice, tell it to stop spinning please."
Alec stopped walking and whispered close to Magnus' head. "Stop spinning please." And kissed his temple. "Did it work?"
"Nope," Magnus replied popping the p. "Maybe try again," So he did, lingering a little longer when he kissed his temple.
"You're sweet, you know that. Almost too sweet for your own good." Magnus sighed as they continued walking.
"Is that right?"
"Mhm, you're so sweet sometimes, its tricks me."
"Trick you how?"
"Huh! See there you go again trying to trick me into saying something."
"Magnus I'm not trying to trick you into anything."
Magnus frowned. "I'm so confused, Alexander."
"About?"
"Us"
"What about us?"
He wasn't sure if he should be asking him that when he was in this state but it just slipped out.
Magnus giggled, "Sorry that reminded me of that high school musical song "what about us, what about everything we've been through" he sang the next couple of lines and stopped just as they reached their suite. His earlier question was gone from his mind.
Alec held back a smile unlocking the door and shuffling Magnus through. "Oh! We should go swimming!" Magnus tried running toward the pool but Alec swooped in front of him holding him back in his arms.
"Nope, no swimming, not when drunk."
"I'm not that drunk, Alec."
"You literally just said your head was spinning. There's no way I'm letting you in that pool."
Magnus stopped struggling, deep in thought. "Oh yeah." He laughed into his hand before he frowned again. The next thing that came out of his mouth threw Alec for a mile. "Am I pathetic, Alec?"
"What?" Alec stopped in his tracks softening his hold on him. "No. You're not pathetic Magnus, why would you even think that?"
"Camille thinks I am,"
I just like that he knew what Camille had said to him earlier in the day. He'd been carrying this around all day, Alec's heart ached so intensely he didn't know what to do with the feeling except continue to hold him. If he ever saw Camille again on this trip, and he really hoped they wouldn't, he would have to fight to keep his thoughts to himself. Magnus looked so small and hurt in his arms. His Magnus. He couldn't let that go.
"She thinks I'm sad and pathetic," He giggled which only made Alec's heart shatter further cause he could see it was Magnus' way of trying to hide his emotions. But the smile slipped as quickly as it had appeared.
"Camille and her opinion can go get fucked for all I care. You. Are. Not. Pathetic." Alec took extra care annunciating each word.
"But what if she's right?" Magnus looked up and into his eyes and Alec could see all the pain welling to the surface. Seeing Magnus like this, he didn't know what to do but to try and reiterate what he already told him.
"Hey," Alec spoke softly, cupping his face, "You're not pathetic, baby. You're not sad, I hope. You're so brave, and strong, the most incredible man I've ever met," Alec laughed slightly overcome with emotion. "I mean Jesus, Magnus you built a dance studio, and it's a success! People love you, I-" He stopped that sentence very quickly. He wasn't about to tell him he loved him when they were both drunk as hell. "You make people's day just by being in it," He breathed stepping closer to him. "Okay," He looked him in the eye. Magnus nodded letting out a quiet, "Okay,"
Alec kissed him on the forehead before saying, "Now, let's get you to bed,"
Magnus patted Alec's cheek before looking away quickly, "There you go, being sweet again." He sighed.
"I'm being honest, saying the truth." Alec cupped his face in his hands again. "Magnus look at me."
Magnus shook his head "Nope don't wanna. Cause then I might do something stupid."
Alec didn't know what that meant but carried on anyway. "Fine but please don't let her get inside your head."
"There's only one person inside my head right now," Magnus mumbled playing with his hands still not looking at him.
"Yeah, and who's that?" Alec asked a small smile playing on his lips.
Magnus looked up then. "A secret."
Laughing, Alec said. "Is that right?" Magnus nodded vehemently "C'mon to bed, hmm" Alec shuffled them into their bedroom sitting Magnus down on the bed where he lay down releasing a sigh. "Oh so comfy."
"Can you get dressed on your own?" Alec asked.
"Absolutely!"
Alec left Magnus to his own devices and grabbed some water for the both of them, they were definitely going to need them in the morning.
When he returned, surprisingly, Magnus was under the covers snuggled into his pillows.
"Hello" he smiled from where he lay.
Alec couldn't help returning the smile, "Hello, you comfy?"
"Yeah, my head is still spinning a bit, but it's better."
"That's good, I've put some water on your nightstand for when you need it okay."
"Thank you,"
"You're welcome."
Alec got dressed throwing his shorts in the washing pile and reached for the nearest clean tee. Turning off the light he slipped between the sheets. Today had felt like the longest day in history and he was glad for it to be over.
Magnus reached over the gap between them finding his hand, linking their fingers. Alec didn't object rolling to face the other man who was still snuggled into his pillow, eyes closed. Alec found himself wishing he was that pillow.
Reaching over with his other hand he brushed his fingers through his hair whispering a quiet "Goodnight baby" thinking he was asleep.
Magnus smiled. "Goodnight,"
The next morning Magnus woke, feeling hot. Too hot, and his mouth dry as anything, head pounding. Groaning, he shoved his head into the pillow except that wasn't a pillow. That was Alec's chest. He now knew why it was so stifling. Things slowly started to register. Alec's arm was under his head and wrapped around his back, their legs crossed over one another. How had this even happened? He was sure they'd gone to sleep, well, not like this. Moving away he tried to escape Alec's hold, but he tightened his arm around him. Magnus groaned. "Too hot, need water"
Alec blinked awake an apology already on his tongue. "Sorry, I didn't...how did this even happen?"
"I have no idea, but what I do know is that my head hurts, I feel sick and I'm never drinking alcohol again."
Alec laughed followed by a wince, "You know what me too,"
"We don't have anything planned today do we cause I honestly just wanna order room service and do absolutely nothing."
"I'm down for that!" Alec sighed rolling over into his pillow.
Magnus slowly got out of bed. Feeling every sore muscle in his body. He hadn't had a night like that in quite a while. The memory of him and Alec dancing flashing behind his eyes, followed by their walk up to the suite. For the amount of alcohol he had consumed, he remembered every word Alec had said to him, the after-effects still making his heartbeat rapidly. If he wasn't so hot right now he would've swung back around and cuddled into Alec again. Instead, he was sweating, his hair sticky, he probably looked a god awful mess.
Squinting his eyes against the sun his head pounded as he entered the living room searching for the phone. He needed some orange juice or food, or something. He ordered several things off the menu. Forgetting half of what they were by the time he hung up the phone. He took a cold shower waking him up indefinitely. He stayed in there until he started to shiver. Finding a couple of ibuprofen in his bag he swallowed them thankful his headache would subside sometime soon.
The food was in the lounge when he entered. At first, the smell made him want to vomit but he knew once he got some good food in him he'd feel better.
Alec was standing there admiring the seven hundred things Magnus ordered. There were pancakes, waffles, fruit, smoothies, granola, bacon, eggs, french toast, sausages, hash browns, fries. Okay so maybe he went a bit overboard.
"Damn did you order the whole menu?"
"Haha" Magnus drawled. "At least we won't have to order anything else for the rest of the day." And they didn't. All that food lasted them the whole day.
Magnus had every intention of asking Alec if he wanted to have that chat now, but soon enough halfway into a movie he nodded off slinking into the side of the couch. When he woke to Alec nudging him softly he realized the day was gone. The sky, now a dark black. "Hey, sleepyhead,"
Magnus smiled at him, "Hey,"
Alec brushed his fingers across Magnus' forehead and through his hair, "Feeling better?" He nodded. "Good," Alec replied. "I know you said we won't need to order any food for the rest of the day, but I ordered dinner anyway,"
Magnus nuzzled into his hand in his hair. "What'd you get us?"
"Pasta alright?"
"Mhm, sounds perfect,"
They ate in comfortable silence before heading to bed. They had an early start tomorrow with the sunrise trek and all. They could have that chat another day.
"Who's idea was it to do this thing?" Magnus asked while still trying to wake up as he followed Alec along the trail.
"I believe it was a collective decision," Helen answered from the front.
"I need coffee," Magnus whined.
Alec came to an abrupt stop, Magnus almost colliding with his back. "Whoa"
"Sorry, one sec" he reached into his backpack passing a warm flask over to Magnus. "Coffee, if you want it."
Magnus froze looking at the flask and then at Alec. "Alec, I swear to god I will marry you for real right now oh my god you lifesaver."
Alec shook his head laughing it off. "Just drink"
....
He didn't know how long they were walking. If he was being honest he wasn't sure if he wasn't sleepwalking. Running to catch up with Alec he said, "You know I have no idea how you are up and awake right now."
Alec smiled at the ground. "I have no idea either, to be honest."
"Not to sound like I'm whining but does anyone know how much longer we have to walk?" He wasn't unfit, he was a dancer, but he was tired. He hadn't slept well last night flinching awake every hour or so worried he'd snuggled up to Alec again.
"Just another 10 minutes" Helen voiced from the front of the pack.
He could do 10 minutes.
"You want some water?" Alec asked.
"Oh yes please." He drank quietly. "You really packed everything and here I am with nothing but a flashlight."
"I'm a kindergarten teacher I tend to overpack most of the time." Magnus couldn't help thinking he'd make a great father someday.
"Speaking of which how has it been, being away from work? Especially for this long."
Alec stepped over a log holding out his hand for Magnus to step over as well. Who said chivalry was dead.
"Surprisingly, it's been amazing. Don't get me wrong I love my job but I didn't realize how much I needed this." He paused smiling back at Magnus letting go of his hand. Magnus missed the warmth once it was gone. "Thank you for pushing me to go."
"That's what friends are for." Ugh. Friends. He hated that word right now. And hated that he said it out loud wishing he could take it back straight away.
Alec only hummed a noncommittal reply. Magnus wondered what was going on inside his head. Because he had no idea what was going on inside his own head. It was a mess, a scramble of whatever was happening between them. Were they more than friends? Weren't they? It did his head in. But yet he couldn't find the courage to ask, yet.
When they were dancing the other night he knew Alec enjoyed that just as much as he had but when he went to kiss him he'll never forget the look of sheer panic in his eyes. It would haunt his dreams for the rest of his life.
He loved Alec, he loved him as a friend, but he loved him as so much more as well. Last night while tossing and turning he'd thought about the best-case scenario, he tells him how he feels and Alec feels the same. None of it fake. Not for one second. Then the worst-case scenarios snuck in and overtook every thought. The 'I'm sorry I see us as just friends.' The 'I'm sorry I have to move out.' The 'I'm sorry I don't think we can be friends anymore.' He spiralled after that not getting a wink of sleep.
"You okay?" Alec asked still walking next to him.
"Huh?"
"You kinda zoned out for a second there"
"Oh," He laughed self consciously. "Lost in thought, you know me"
They made their way up one final little hill and over the top looking out over the ocean. The sun only slightly peeking over the horizon.
"We made it!" Magnus threw his hands in the air. Alec was watching him so intently he felt goosebumps rise over his skin, tingling.
Aline and Helen walked over, "Let's find a seat somewhere"
There were a few people up here with them, but thankfully it wasn't overcrowded. It seemed everyone else had the better sense to sleep.
Alec lay out a blanket on the ground. What else did he have in that bag of his? The girls set up next to them. They bunched together for a couple of photos together trying to capture as many memories together as possible seen as the girls were leaving tomorrow and it'd just be he and Alec. Nowhere to run.
Alec sat down on the blanket gesturing for him to sit as well. He sat next to him but Alec shook his head. Did he somehow sit down wrong? There was no right way to sit he felt like saying but settled for "What?"
"Not there." He replied.
Even more confused than before he shuffled forward slightly looking back to Alec to see him shaking his head again.
Magnus threw his hands up, "Well where do you want me to sit?"
Alec was smiling, why the hell was he smiling? It was too early for games.
"Right here" He patted the space between his legs.
Confused, Magnus looked from Alec to the spot between his legs about a hundred times. What? He thought. He said as much shortly after.
Alec reached out his hand, "Please, just trust me."
He could do that. He settled in place, getting as comfortable as he could between his legs. Alec's hands came around his waist locking in place over his stomach. "Alexander, what's going on? We aren't pretending anymore?" Magnus' heart was racing. How it was still inside his chest he didn't know.
"Not pretending," Was all Alec said. Magnus wanted to scream but settled for doing it internally. None of this was helping him understand what was going on.
Soon enough the sun rose over the horizon filling the sky with pools of colour. Orange, pink, yellows, and reds, reflecting off the ocean, and overtaking anything and everything. It took his breath away. Now he knew why people got up so early to see this. He was lost for words. And he was so happy to have done it with the man behind him holding him to his chest.
Alec rested his chin on his shoulder looking out over the horizon. "It's something special isn't it."
"It's beautiful," He smiled.
"Magnus,"
"Hmm?" He asked transfixed on the sky and the feeling of Alec at his back.
"Can you face me for a second?"
Magnus shuffled around so he was sitting cross-legged between Alec's. "Hi." Magnus smiled a little taken with the way the sun shone on Alec's face. He was so close their faces were mere inches away. "Hi"
"This holiday, it's been good right, even with everything?" Alec asked.
Magnus nodded, unable to find words.
Alec's thumb traced the dark circles under his eyes, "You look tired" he said.
Magnus snorted. "Wow, you really have a way with words."
"I didn't mean that in a bad way, I just didn't realize how tired you were until now. Didn't sleep well?" He asked.
Magnus shook his head. No.
"Something on your mind?"
Magnus nodded. Yes.
"Care to share?"
Shook his head. No
Alec laughed. "You lose your voice?"
"No," and of course it came out croaky. Alec ducked his head laughing again. Magnus found himself hooking his fingers under his chin lifting his head back up, "Don't hide that beautiful smile," Magnus whispered.
Alec's smile dropped completely, and Magnus wanted to scream for it to come back.
"Magnus," Alec breathed.
His fingers were still on his chin, his thumb tracing a circle "Yeah."
"I'm gonna kiss you, is that okay?"
Magnus didn't reply. Instead, he met him halfway in what could only be described as the best kiss of his life. The breath knocked out of him as his lips met Alec's. Oh, it was much better than that little peck he'd gotten days ago. This. This kiss was everything he'd been waiting for. Cupping Alec's cheek he pulled him closer deepening the kiss turning his head angling it just so that Alec could kiss him harder. He never wanted to stop but unfortunately, they needed to breathe, leaning back ever so slightly he felt his heart in his chest, beating wildly, he reached for Alec's hand and rested it over his heart. "This," He took a deep breath looking directly into Alec's eyes. "This is all for you,"
Alec smiled, and it near damn took his breath away all over again. He leaned forward kissing him again but only quickly because they were interrupted by shouts and whistles.
"About time!" Aline yelled. Helen cupped her hands over her mouth screaming out applause.
They laughed leaning back breathless, resting their foreheads together. "I think it's time for that chat now." Magnus sighed stroking his thumb over Alec's kiss swollen lips.
Alec leaned forward kissing him one last time. "I think so too."
Chapter Text
Alec was still humming from head to toe, reeling from that kiss. It was everything he had imagined, and he’d imagined it many times. It was that and more. It was like coming home all in one breath. Like he had been waiting for that last part of his life to click into place. The part in him that never felt quite complete, that part had been reserved for Magnus, and only him, all this time. His lips were still tingling from the sensation as they made their way back down the hill.
What had made the whole moment better was seeing the way Magnus’ face lit up, like he also had been waiting his whole life for this.
When he’d set out that morning he hadn’t planned on making his move, but something was telling him, pestering him, niggling in his chest to go for it. He was sick of playing around with the idea that he wasn’t hopelessly in love with his best friend. Hand in hand, they walked along the path stealing little glances at the other, not being able to contain their smiles.
Aline said in front of them. “Honestly, I thought I would have to push you two idiots together to get your shit together,” She paused stepping over a log, “But, I’m happy it didn’t come to that. Alec’s thing was far better,” She turned to wink quickly at him before facing the trail again. Yeah so maybe she was right the other day.
Alec looked at Magnus still feeling a little bewildered this morning had even happened. He pinched his leg with his free hand just to make sure. Ouch. Yeah definitely real.
Magnus side-eyed him a smile pulling at his lips, “You’re staring,”
“Just making sure this isn’t some figment of my imagination,”
Magnus lifted their hands to his lips kissing lightly. “It’s real, Alexander,” Yeah, it was.
They followed the girls out into the clearing of the beach and resort, coming into view the sun now fully up and shining, not a cloud in sight.
Helen asked. “You boys keen for some breakfast?”
Magnus looked at him, giving him the option. Alec looked to the beach then back to his friends. “Actually, I think we might walk along the beach for a bit.” He paused in case Magnus disagreed. He just nodded in agreement. Continuing he said, “But we will see you for dinner?”
Helen raised her hands in a joking manner, “We get it, we get it, y’all want some alone time. Say no more,”
“Have fun,” Aline added, poking her tongue out like a child. Helen shook her head in laughter looking at her wife. “C’mon babe, let’s leave them to it,”
“See you later,” Magnus waved.
Taking their shoes off, Alec shoved them in his backpack before following Magnus further down the beach. Leaning back to look at the sky, Magnus let out an exaggerated sigh.
Alec curled a brow, “Something on your mind?”
“Actually, for the first time in two weeks, no” He looked at Alec. “That, my dear, was a happy sigh,”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. These last few days I’ve been stuck in my head worse than most about us, Camille, us again,” He chuckled softly. “But now,” He sighed again, reaching for his hand pulling him along the shore. “Now, I couldn’t be happier.”
Alec splashed some water as it washed up across his feet, “I wish I could’ve saved you some of that stress by you know, maybe kissing you sooner.”
“I think if you kissed me when we were still faking I wouldn’t have believed it was real.”
“Yeah, I can understand that, I would’ve been the same.”
“There’s still a small part of me that is doubting what happened this morning.” Magnus looked at the sand. “Just so I’m clear, that kiss wasn’t a one time thing right?”
Alec stopped walking, forcing Magnus to tug on his hand as he came to an abrupt stop. “Alec?”
Alec pulled Magnus to him cradling his face between his hands, kissing him hoping that was answer enough. Judging by the way Magnus leaned into the kiss, he was pretty certain it was, but just in case it wasn't, he said. “Just so we are clear,” He paused, smiling, “I’m so into you, I have been since the day I met you,” Magnus looked back at him in disbelief, “You never said anything for that long?”
Alec grazed his nose across Magnus’ “I didn’t want to risk losing you,”
“As if I could live without you. The minute you entered it, my life changed for the better.” Magnus kissed him again before saying, “So just to make sure you know for certain, I’m into you too,”
“Yeah?”
“Fuck yeah,”
“That’s a strong word,”
“Needed it, for extra emphasis,”
Alec laughed leaning in for another kiss. This man was all his. “Can you imagine, if only we told each other sooner we could’ve avoided so much confusion,”
Magnus hummed, wrapping his arms around Alec’s neck as he leaned back to look at him properly. “We could have, yeah, but hey, at least now we have a great story to tell our kids,” Magnus’ eyes widened immediately after the words left his mouth, quickly following with. “Uh, I-- if we are still…..or if you even want--” Alec silenced him with a kiss. Was there such a thing as too much kissing? To hell with it.
“Magnus, baby, relax. I want it all with you,”
Magnus sagged against him, “I really thought I just blew it by saying that,”
“Not possible, you’re stuck with me now,”
“That doesn't sound so bad,” Magnus looked out at the ocean before saying, “Let’s have breakfast in our room,”
Alec smiled leaning in to kiss his forehead. “Lead the way,”
Alec and Magnus were sitting outside lounging on the couch on the patio soaking up the sun's rays, feeling content in the other's arms. That had really been all they’d done today once they got back to their suite they ordered a late breakfast and found themselves outside talking amongst themselves, snuggling up against one another. Alec wouldn’t have it any other way. This, right here, was perfect.
Magnus rested his head against his shoulder where he lay next to him, fiddling with his fake wedding band. Alec noticed, soon reaching for his own still on his finger. "I guess we have to take these off now," it was way too soon for marriage but he felt somewhat disappointed that he wouldn't have that link to Magnus anymore.
Sighing, Magnus said. "Yeah," He sounded just as disappointed. It sounded silly but he’d grown attached to the little gift store ring, seeing the same one on Magnus’ finger. It would feel wrong just throwing them away. That ring would always be a reminder of this trip and how they came together, be that it took them a while. Sitting up quickly, almost knocking Magnus off the couch, he reached out his arms to catch him, chuckling a soft sorry under his breath, he said "What if we kept them?"
Magnus frowned across from him “Alexander, is this your way of proposing? Because it’s a little soon don’t you think?”
Alec shook his head, “No, I just don’t want to get rid of it. Call me sentimental, but I want to keep them,”
“So what are you suggesting?”
“Maybe we could put them on a chain, or place them in a little box of memories we can look back on later down the track a few years from now?”
“A few years, huh?” Magnus grinned.
Alec pulled him closer, “Yeah, you ain’t getting rid of me now” he paused briefly, “So, what do you think?”
Magnus looked back down at the ring on his finger, smiling to himself, “Yeah, I like the idea of a memory box,” He looked up at Alec, “Who knew you were so romantic,”
“For the right people,”
“I guess I’m one of those people then?” He smiled from ear to ear, his nose scrunching slightly.
“You’re the only person,” Alec held his gaze, testing their newfound closeness he pushed Magnus on his back so he was hovering over him slightly whispering a quiet “Hey,” Between them.
Magnus, being caught off guard, laughed before settling, gently caressing his thumb along his cheek "Hey, hot stuff."
Alec grinned fighting a giggle leaning into the crook of Magnus' neck. "Hot stuff?"
Magnus shrugged, "Trying different things out, now that I can,"
"Oh really?"
"Mhm."
"Got anymore up your sleeve?"
A cheeky smile settled over Magnus’ lips. "Studmuffin." He winked.
Alec snorted kissing the tip of his nose, "Nope"
"Dreamboat?" Magnus kissed the tip of his nose back.
Alec wrinkled his nose, "Hmm, nope"
"Hunk?"
"I swear these keep getting worse,"
Magnus brought a hand to his chest affronted. "Ouch, they took me all of 3 seconds to come up with, I’ve never been more crushed in my life, Alexander"
Alec removed his hand from his chest and kissed over his heart. "Better?"
"Who knew you had this side to you?" Magnus ran his fingers through Alec's hair. "I've lived with you all this time and I've never seen this side. I've seen glimpses on this trip, but"
"But you don't like it?" Alec asked confused
"What no!" Alarm flashed in Magnus' eyes. "I love it. I just never knew the full extent of what I was missing. Even after two years, there are still things about you that surprise me" he continued drawing his thumb against his cheek in a slow circle. Alec leaned into it. This time Magnus was the one pulling him down, kissing him soft and gentle, breaking apart the tiniest bit to say "Honeybun?"
Alec smiled against Magnus' lips, "You're doing this on purpose now aren't you?"
"I get such good reactions, you make it too easy"
"No more reactions from me,"
"Is that a challenge I hear?" Magnus asked with a gleam in his eye. Alec shut him up with a kiss.
Magnus whispered between kisses. "Sugar pie" Alec forced his lips from breaking into a smile, instead deciding to focus on making Magnus a mindless mess with his kisses. Unfortunately, it wasn’t working.
"Bunny"
"Boo" He tried again
“What is this, Halloween?” Alec said between breaths.
"Loverboy," Magnus continued, unfazed. "McDreamy?"
Okay so it was getting harder and harder to refrain from laughing, but no matter what, Magnus continued. How he was even able to think while Alec kissed him he didn't know.
"Honey butter biscuit," that one almost got him. Almost. "Boyfriend?"
Alec pulled back to look at him, all teasing and amusement vanished from his face and Alec realized he was asking if that’s what they were. Softening his eyes he smiled down at his boyfriend, "Yeah, baby. Boyfriend."
Magnus pulled him back down kissing him, running his hands up his back making him shiver under his touch. If anything Magnus was the one making him undone.
Time slipped away as they continued to lounge on the outdoor sofa, kissing, cuddling, chatting about nothing. Letting the day slip through their fingers.
Magnus' phone buzzed between them. Sitting up he checked his notification before standing up abruptly. "I'll be back in a second, I just have to take care of something." He smiled, hiding something
"Everything okay?"
"Yeah, absolutely, it's just work" He bent down and pecked him on the lips before disappearing through the sliding door. Weird.
Magnus didn't come back out until it was time they got ready for dinner, spending the last night of the girls vacation with them.
The next morning it was time to say goodbye to the girls. It was bittersweet, to say the least. He hadn't seen them since he went off to college, he'd always regretted not keeping in touch so he made sure to get all their details before they left, but on the other hand, he was excited to spend a remaining couple of days with Magnus, and Magnus alone. Fingers crossed no interruptions occurred. He wanted his now-boyfriend; he couldn't believe it quite yet himself. He wanted him all to himself.
Stepping up on her tippy toes Aline pulled him in with her surprisingly strong grip for a hug, whispering in his ear, "Don't fuck this up, I expect to be at your real wedding one day."
Alec grinned, whispering back. "Don't worry I'm not letting him slip away," She stood back, patting him on the chest. "Smart man," Meanwhile Helen walked up behind her going in for a quick hug. "It was really nice to see you again, Alec."
"You too," He hummed back.”Sorry for all the, you know, lying in the beginning,”
Helen waved it off, “All is forgiven, and I mean hey, you two are actually together now, so at least something good came of it, yeah?”
Alec looked to Magnus who was saying a long goodbye to Aline, “Yeah,”
"I have to warn you, I took a lot of photos on this trip, many of you both, so get ready for a bulk load coming your way when I get home. You can thank me later for the cute candid moments" She winked, stepping back and turning to Magnus who was currently still squeezing Aline to death, she was saying how much she was going to miss him. Magnus had really bonded with the girls on this trip.
Helen embraced him in a warm hug saying, "When we are in New York, you know I'll be asking for some dancing lessons."
"Absolutely." Magnus grinned at them, then at Alec. "Having y’all on this trip with us, it's been incredible, I'm so happy I got to meet you both."
"Right back at ya." Aline smiled her eyes shining with unshed tears, “Treat each other well,”
“We will, safe travels home,” Alec hugged her one final time before their shuttle arrived and then they were gone.
Magnus turned to him, silence falling between them. "Just you and I now, pumpkin."
"And I'm not going to waste a minute" Alec pulled him into his arms.
"What no reaction?" Magnus asked.
"To what?"
"I called you pumpkin."
"Oh," he shrugged. "I guess I've gotten used to the relentless amount of pet names."
"Well, this is no fun anymore."
Alec tilted Magnus' chin slightly, his thumb resting just below his lower lip. "Aw, are you upset about that, pumpkin?" He smirked.
Magnus scrunched his nose looking adorable. "Maybe a little."
Alec kissed him. "Better?"
"Almost."
Kissing him again he pulled back saying, “How about we go back to our room and make use of this alone time?"
Magnus leaned into him. "As much as I love that idea, I actually have something else planned."
"You do?"
"I do."
Alec followed Magnus
"Are you going to tell me?"
"It's a surprise."
Alec frowned.
"That frowny face isn't going to work on me, now c'mon sweetheart we are almost there."
They walked until they came to the wharf where a bunch of boats were sitting. Magnus walked all the way to the end, and then led him on board. "So, remember our first full day here?"
"We were on the cruise, yes."
"And remember how we didn't get to see any dolphins."
"Unfortunately,"
"Well, I booked us a private cruise that guarantees dolphin sightings"
Alec's eyes widened like a child on his birthday, "You're kidding?"
Magnus shook his head smiling.
"Magnus. I don't know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything, I've been trying to organize this the whole trip and the guy finally got back to me yesterday." Something clicked in his brain. "That weird phone call you took?" Alec asked. Magnus nodded. "Sorry if I made you worry."
"No no it's fine, this is amazing. Thank you, baby"
Magnus wrapped his arms around Alec's chest resting his head on his shoulder. "You're more than welcome, my love."
"My love," Alec repeated.
"Hmm?"
"I like that one." Magnus looked up his eyes glassy and Alec was sure the emotion was the exact same in his eyes. Leaning the tiniest bit toward him he kissed him, pulling him closer in his arms.
They sat up in front of the boat, just them and the sea splashing up on the nose of the boat. The driver took them anywhere and everywhere, and when they finally saw those little fins surface and glide above water, Alec felt like he was a child again, struck with awe. He clutched Magnus' hand in excitement, if he wasn't so enthralled with the beautiful mammals he'd be embarrassed about the way he was acting. That thought left his mind as soon as the dolphins jumped, arching up and soaring through the air splashing back down into the water.
"Magnus," he breathed.
Magnus, smiling at him, a sheen of tears in his eyes kissed his shoulder lightly before wrapping his arm around him as they stood side by side.
"You really just made a childhood dream of mine come true." He said, not taking his eyes off the pod of dolphins. A couple of them swimming up near the boat, peaking their noses out as to say hello.
"It was the least I could do," Magnus said, looking over the edge at the little dolphins.
They hung around for 30 mins or so before making their way back to the resort and Alec could finally sit back taking in what he just saw. "Someone pinch me.....ow!" He cried.
Magnus laughed behind his hand. "You said someone pinch me"
"I didn't mean literally."
Magnus leaned forward pecking him on the cheek. "Forgive me?"
Alec smiled, turning his head quickly to kiss him on the lips. "Forgiven."
The driver of the boat slowly took them back to shore, taking the scenic route. They were leaving this beautiful place tomorrow and he really wanted to take it all in, but not as much as he wanted to get Magnus back to their room.
Alec lay on the seat, his head in Magnus' lap. "So we're going back to the room now?"
Magnus laughed, throwing his head back. "Gosh someone would think you want to have your wicked way with me?" He smirked.
"Perhaps I do,"
"We will have time for that, don't you worry. We have all the time in the world. But I have one last thing planned, and then I promise I'm all yours for the rest of the day." Magnus trailed his fingers up and down his arm sending shivers up his neck and down his spine.
"I like that sound of that"
Magnus pulled Alec towards an abandoned corner of the beach, cautiously looking back every now and then like he was waiting for a reaction from him. He didn’t realize what he was meant to be looking for until a blanket covered in cushions and a picnic basket off to the side came into view. "Magnus"
"Alec," Magnus smiled nervously
"This whole day, everything you’ve planned. I don’t deserve it."
Magnus frowned, shaking his head. "Of course you deserve it. Can't I take my boyfriend on dates?" He asked
Alec looked at him, his eyes softening. “I didn’t plan anything, you deserve dates planned for you too,”
Magnus stopped walking until Alec came to a complete stop in front of him, squeezing his hand gently, Magnus said, “We have a lifetime for dates.” That made him smile, looking at Magnus he leaned down kissing him softly, just once in confirmation, that yeah, they had a lifetime left for dates.
He still couldn't quite fathom how he'd gotten so lucky. All he'd ever wanted for a long time now was this man standing before him, and now that he did, he wasn't going to let one moment slip between his fingers.
"C'mon," Magnus said.
Getting comfy amongst the pillows the sun began to set as they opened a bottle of wine. Alec lay beside him resting on his elbow, his head in his hand as they talked and laughed the afternoon away. Moments like this, it felt like time stood still and it was just the two of them in this massive world. No work commitments, no outside pressure, nothing but them, in their little bubble.
Looking out over the ocean, Magnus said "Wanna go for a swim?"
Alec looked at the ocean and then at what they were wearing. "We don't have any swimmers?"
"Since when do you care about clothes getting wet?" Placing a finger on his chin in thought Magnus said, “If I recall a night not long after we arrived you jumping in the pool in your clothes and dragging me in as well,”
Alec smiled, his tongue between his teeth remembering the exact night. “Okay, so you may have a point,”
“So, how about it? Fancy a sunset swim?” Magnus eagerly waited for his reply. “It’ll be fun,”
Sitting up, he started unbuttoning his short-sleeve shirt, "Let's go, then"
Magnus beamed back at him, following suit by ripping off his shirt and running after Alec into the water. Knees deep in water, he stared out over the horizon, the sun casting an orange glow over the sky, Alec came up behind him wrapping his arms around his waist kissing his bare shoulder. Magnus loved when he did that. "I thought we were going for a swim?" Alec murmured softly.
Magnus leaned into his hold. "We are, I’m just taking it all in" he sighed. “I don’t want to leave,”
"Me either,"
"Do you think we could stay here forever and just live in this little bubble?"
"We could, but if we are being realistic--"
"Nope, no reality check tonight, just this, just us."
Alec chuckled behind him. "Speaking of when we get home."
"I just said."
"I know I know but we do need to talk about it, we've gone from roommates to being in a relationship, that's gonna change things, no?"
Magnus turned in his arms. "I don't see why it would? The only thing that might change would be me maybe spending a little more time in your bed than mine," He grinned up at him.
"Is that so?" Alec smiled back, lighting his whole world up with it. Magnus nodded. "I definitely don't want either of us to move out if that's what you're getting at. We already know how the other lives, we know everything about each other, we will be fine,"
Alec ducked his head enough that he rested his forehead down to Magnus' "I definitely don't want to move out but I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page."
"And are we?" Magnus asked, running his hands up Alec's arms and into his hair.
"I think we are, yeah." He spoke softly.
Tilting his head up, kissing Alec tenderly on the lips he smiled as Alec hummed in agreement deepening the kiss the tiniest bit before pulling back.
Suddenly he was lifted up, Alec's hands under his thighs. He may have made a rather embarrassing noise while being startled. Wrapping his legs around him he clung on. "What are you doing?" He couldn't see the other man's face but he knew he was smiling. "Going for a swim, no?" Magnus smiled into his neck clinging on tighter, letting Alec carry him into the water.
The water sloshed at their waists as Alec took them deeper until it was just over their chests and Magnus relaxed his grip leaning back to look at him. "Hi,"
"Hi," Alec whispered back, "Ready?" Magnus nodded, closing his eyes as Alec dunked them under the water, coming straight back up he shook the water from his hair huffing out a breath. "You'd think the water would be warmer than this." He shivered.
"It's not that cold." Alec hummed. "But I guess you do feel the cold." He pulled him closer just wading in the water, feeling the body heat radiating off him.
Cupping Alec's cheek in his palm he just stared at the man holding him, the man to who he’d given his heart willingly. Normally the idea of a relationship freaked him out, especially after everything with Camille, but staring at Alec, he knew his heart was in safe hands. He’d never felt so at peace, so in love, so cared for than in this man’s embrace. Even as friends, Alec was his safe place. Coming home every evening didn’t just mean their apartment, it meant coming home to Alec. Alec was his home. The realization had him leaning forward kissing him slowly, thoroughly, enjoying every moment, melting into the kiss as Alec deepened it. He was never going to get sick of this. Never.
Alec broke the kiss resting on his forehead. "Magnus, I" He paused leaning back a fraction to look into his eyes. Magnus nuzzled his nose against his, "You what?"
Alec's hand came up out of the water to cradle his face, taking a deep breath, he said. "I love you" Magnus' heart stopped and started all in the same second while sitting dumbfounded.
Alec continued, "I have for quite some time now." The silence continued between them as Magnus had apparently lost the ability to speak. "I hope that doesn't freak you out too much." Alec quickly added, looking vulnerable. Magnus shook his head leaning in to kiss him, kiss his cheeks, his forehead, his smile slowly coming back. "It doesn't freak me out," He breathed, kissing his temple before looking directly at him. "I love you too, Alexander"
He'd seen countless of Alec's smiles, but this one, this one was like looking directly into the sun, so bright he almost had to look away, not feeling worthy of such a look, but Alec grabbed him, pulling him in, kissing him. This one lasted longer, this one was more heated than the others as their bodies tried to get closer, as their breathing became laboured. Magnus had to pull back, catching his breath. "I think," he said, his chest continuing to rise and fall at an exceedingly fast rate, "We should go to our room now."
Alec's chest rose and fell just as fast. "I think so too."
Stumbling into their bedroom they bumped into the end of the bed breaking apart to laugh as Alec pushed Magnus down causing him to bounce slightly off the bed. Alec crawled his way over him until they were face to face, leaning down to kiss his neck, sending fire through his veins. Magnus melted into the mattress arching his neck slightly.
Alec looked at him intently, asking. "You're sure?"
"110 percent,"
Alec smirked. "110 percent huh? That's awfully high."
"Don't let it go to your head." Magnus flicked his nose lightly making him scrunch his face.
"Too late" Alec leaned back down, kissing him eagerly, reaching for the wet clothes still on their bodies.
Magnus rolled them so he was on top, running his hands over any body part he could find. Learning all the soft curves and dips of Alec's body, the way he sighed when he touched certain parts. Watching him come undone may just be his new favourite thing. Kissing his way down his body he discarded what was left of the remaining clothes until it was just them with nothing in between. No barriers, baring themselves to one another. Magnus ran his hands up the other man's chest, sighing to himself. "You're so fucking perfect."
Alec ran his hands slowly up and along the skin on his arms pulling him back down on top of him, "Says you" He panted. "Seeing you shirtless this whole trip has damn near been torture."
Magnus pecked him on the lips, grinning. "Oh is that right?"
"You know it's right." Alec ran his hands down his back creating goosebumps in their wake. "That dancers body, it's my kryptonite."
Magnus smirked. "You're good for my ego," He paused, kissing his way along his collarbone. "I just might keep you around."
Alec chuckled beneath him gasping as Magnus sucked just below his ear. Interesting. He sucked harder until Alec pulled him closer moving his hips. Now he was the one gasping. "Fuck"
"Mmm," Alec hummed.
"Alec," Magnus breathed between kisses.
The next moment they were a blur of bodies, hands roaming, small gasps and moans as they joined together. It was everything and more. Feeling connected more than ever to the man he loved and who loved him back.
Magnus said as much as they moved together, their hands grasping at each other's bodies "I love you."
Alec was lost for words for a few moments until he spoke in a soft, tender voice, "I love you too, baby. I love you so much."
He wanted this moment to last forever but took comfort in the fact that they could have this whenever they wanted. He was at the mercy of Alec, relishing the way it felt to be with him, to be in him. It was all-consuming.
Magnus snuggled in beside Alec, trying to catch his breath, a smile firmly on his face. It was still early in the night but he could feel sleep pulling at his eyes just as he felt Alec kiss him on the forehead and shuffle out from next to him, but Magnus had a firm grip on him, not wanting him to go anywhere, "Baby, I'm just gonna clean up a little and I'll be right back." Alec reassured softly. He laughed looking at Magnus’ face which was sure to be something of a sleepy pout. So he was clingy after sex, sue him, or maybe it had something to do with Alec himself. Begrudgingly he let Alec go, immediately missing the warmth once he was gone.
The next thing he knew he was blinking his eyes open staring at a smiley Alec. Shit. When did he fall asleep? Rubbing his eyes, he sat up, "Shit, sorry I didn't mean to fall asleep." He sighed.
"It's okay, I did too." He ran his fingers through his now messy hair. "I ordered us some food"
Magnus leaned forward hugging him, "Thank you."
The rest of the evening he felt warm and fuzzy, never having felt so content in his life. They showered, for longer than they should've but it was distracting to say the least, especially having Alec in there with him.
Snuggling into bed, he said. "We have to say goodbye to this place tomorrow."
Alec had his arm over Magnus’ chest, his hand curved around his head running circles through his hair with his fingers. "We do"
"Do I get this every night?" Magnus asked.
"If you want," Alec smiled. "I have to admit, I've gotten used to going to sleep and waking up beside you."
"It is pretty nice, isn't it. Sometimes sleeping alone can get, well, lonely"
"That's an understatement."
Magnus rolled over so they were facing each other. "What do you think would've happened if you didn't get the time off work?"
Alec thought to himself before saying. "I don't know, I guess you would've still come on this trip, maybe met someone else, and I would be sad and lonely back home."
Magnus shook his head. "I don't know if I would've come if you didn't."
"Really?"
"Yeah. As soon as Maia asked me to take it I knew I would try absolutely anything to get you here,"
"Oh yeah, like what?"
"Hmm, possible kidnap."
Alec laughed. "Kidnap huh?"
"Yup I'd have dragged you on that damn plane."
"I would've liked to see you try." Alec flicked his nose, getting him back for earlier.
"Ye have little faith in my abilities I see." Magnus grinned, flipping Alec on his back pushing his hands up above his head.
Alec bit his lower lip before saying "Point made."
Magnus rolled off settling on his side. "As for the other thing you said. Me meeting someone else. I don't think you know just how hung up on you I was. I am."
"Why'd you never tell me?"
"Same reason you didn't, I assume. Rejection."
"I've seen you hit on people before and you've never been the subtle one." Alec mused.
"Yes, but Alexander, you're different. With you, it always has been. You're my best friend and frankly, I've never felt about another person the way I feel about you. That rejection, I knew I wouldn't be able to take that."
Alec kissed him. "Well that I understand."
Magnus hummed into the kiss. "But we don't need to worry about that anymore because as it turns out you were the one to make the first move."
"So what you're saying is," He pulled Magnus closer. "This is all thanks to me."
Magnus shoved him playfully. "Steady on, I would've got there eventually."
"I believe that," Alec kissed his forehead. "Let's get some sleep, we have a long flight tomorrow."
That they did. They were back in New York tomorrow, back to reality, where what had happened between them would no longer be a holiday romance but the real deal.
Turns out both of them forgot to set an alarm that night, both being distracted with, well, each other. They were both rushing out the door praying they had everything and streamlining it to the reception to check out. That was where Alec told him to wait for the shuttle with their bags and that he'd settle it. A few minutes had passed and Magnus was starting to grow curious why it was taking him so long, didn't he just have to return their keycards to the room? He saw Alec lean on the counter speaking intently to the receptionist. If he looked closer he could see the receptionist actually looked like they were bricking it. What the hell was going on over there? He asked Alec as much when he finally came back.
"Just had to settle something." He replied.
Um okay? "You gonna share with the class?"
"Let's just say I let them know about Camille's little illegal detective work and told them that if they don't fully reimburse you for the trip that I come from a family of highly revered lawyers and they'd be hearing from them."
Magnus' mouth hung open in shock. "You- oh my god" he laughed in disbelief. "And they said?"
Alec, looking ever proud of himself, said. "Expect to see a large sum of money in your bank account in a few days along with their deepest apologies."
"Holy shit" Magnus stepped closer to him. “Wait,” He stopped, thinking. “Your parents aren’t lawyers, Alec.”
“Yeah,” He said, looking around in case someone was listening. “But they don’t know that.” Magnus shook his head with laughter. “My boyfriend, my number one protector,”
Alec hooked his arms around Magnus’ back kissing him on the forehead, “As it should be.” He paused briefly before continuing, "The way I see it, she’s getting off scot-free. She gave you hell, the least that the resort could do by letting her get away with that is refund you." He shrugged. "Plus, perhaps I'm still a little bitter over the whole thing. No one tries to mess with my boyfriend."
"Oh yeah?" He grinned. "I do have some high school bullies out there if you want to follow them up too?"
Alec chuckled. "Show me where, and I'll be there." Alec leaned down to kiss him. Magnus laughed leaning into him, only pulling apart when the airport shuttle pulled up.
Entering their apartment, it had the feel most places did after not being lived in for more than a few days. Eerily quiet, until Magnus flopped down on the couch. "Home sweet home." He sighed.
Alec smiled down at him, they were home. But if he were being honest wherever Magnus was, that was home.
"I'm exhausted, why is travelling always so tiring?" He mumbled, looking up at the ceiling. Alec shrugged still just looking at his boyfriend.
"We'll get some food and then get an early night."
Magnus made grabby hands at him. "Yes yes, but before then, come here."
Alec shook his head a chuckle under his breath as he reached out with his hands linking them with Magnus' "No, no, down here" Magnus grumbled, dragging him down next to him.
Laying next to him on the couch Magnus half on top of him he ran his fingers through his fluffy locks. "Are you excited to see the kiddo's tomorrow?" Magnus asked.
"Yeah." Alec smiled to himself. "But they're probably more excited to see you."
"Duh, I'm just that awesome." Magnus winked.
"So humble."
"That's why you love me," Magnus kissed him on the cheek. Alec moved so he was kissing him on the lips. Magnus leaned back "I'm gonna take that as confirmation." He kissed him again quickly while Alec shoved him playfully, Magnus chuckled into his shoulder before settling in comfortable silence.
"I should probably catch up with Maia and learn how work has been going the last two weeks. I'm kinda scared to walk back in there."
"I wouldn't stress, I'm sure she's done a great job."
"I know I know, but that studio is my baby."
Alec ran his fingers through Magnus' hair as he said. "I know, but she knows you and I'm sure everything is as it was when you left it." He paused. "If not better."
"I suppose you're right."
"Aren't I always."
"Nope," Magnus replied, popping the p and getting up and walking away. Well okay then, Alec laughed to himself. "I'll be back just gonna give Maia a call," Magnus added while leaving the room.
Alec stood making his way to the kitchen opening up their sad empty looking fridge. Damn, they were gonna need to go shopping at some point. His phone buzzed where it was inside his jean pocket. Opening up he saw he had an email from Helen, and as promised, at least a hundred photos. He’d have to remember to look through them with Magnus later.
Walking into Magnus' room he wrapped his arms around his waist giving Magnus a tiny fright. He whispered, "We have no food, I'm gonna order pizza."
Magnus nodded back covering his mic. "Sounds good." Alec kissed the back of his head before walking out but not before hearing Magnus say. "Oh sorry that was just Alec....yeah yeah we had a great time I'll tell you all about it tomorrow." And left the room.
It wasn’t until twenty or so minutes later that Magnus entered the lounge sitting next to him on the couch.
"All good?" Alec asked.
"Yeah, you were right, everything ran smoothly even without me." He sighed. "I don't know whether to be disappointed or not."
"Aw, were you hoping they'd be lost without you?"
"No…” Magnus averted his gaze. “I mean maybe. I don't know. Anyway, she told me that there was a scheduling change and your kiddos are coming in tomorrow just before lunchtime instead of later in the week."
"They'll be excited about that."
"I hope so, Maia's come up with a new warm-up game which I'm sure they'll love."
"Can't wait to see it."
After the pizza arrived they ate half of it and found themselves falling asleep in front of the tv, exhausted more than they thought. Heading to bed Alec out of habit walked towards his room and Magnus to his, until they both stopped outside their doors. Looking at each other in the hall they smiled at one another waiting for the other to make the first move. Luckily, Magnus made that move first, leaning against Alec's door jamb.
"How you feel about a little sleepover." His smile was soft, sweet
Alec stepped closer. "Depends, what's in it for me?"
"Oh I don't know, I'm pretty good at cuddling."
"Go on."
Magnus' lips ticked up to one side. "And oh I don’t know, a certain someone may have mentioned how good I was at some other things."
Alec smiled at him. "And what if I want to show you a couple of things of my own?"
Magnus grabbed his hand dragging him into the room. "Say less." And closed the door.
An awful ringing filled the air pulling him from his deep sleep, the arm that was wrapped around him leaving but only briefly to turn off the alarm. Ugh. Alarm. That meant work. Adulting, and all the rest of it. Alec burrowed further into his pillow groaning at the top of his lungs. Hearing a light chuckle from beside him he peaked a look at the man beside him. The man looked good in the morning, which really wasn't fair cause no one looked good in the morning, eyes all puffy from sleep, half shut, hair a mess, but Magnus, well he made it work.
It was 6:30 am, too early for anyone to be awake in Alec's opinion. Magnus rolled over snuggling closer. "Five more minutes and then we have to get up."
Alec wrapped his arms around him bringing him closer. "Maybe the kids could teach themselves today." Alec mused sleepily.
"That's a scary thought I can't get out of my head now, thank you." Magnus chuckled.
Alec ran his hand down Magnus' spine feeling him squirm under his touch. "Careful with that hand, we don't have time for that this morning." Magnus kissed his chest where he lay.
"I'll make sure it behaves."
"What do you want for breakfast?" Magnus asked.
"We don't have any food."
"Oh, I knew that."
"Sure you did."
"I did.....as soon as you told me" He grinned at him. Alec kissed the grin. "Cute." He kissed him again. "Wanna have a shower?"
"Together?"
Alec nodded.
"I don't think that's a smart way to save time."
"You don't trust yourself in the shower with me? Am I just that irresistible?" He caught Magnus rolling his eyes.
"You think I can't resist your charms?"
"Maybe" Alec replied.
"Prepare to be proven wrong," Magnus said, determined.
He was proven right as they both stepped out of the shower a little later than they should've to rush to get changed.
Walking out the door Alec said. "Okay so maybe no bonding time in the shower on weekdays."
"Did I not say it wasn’t a good idea?"
"All I recall is you saying you could resist my…. What was it? Oh yeah, charms” Alec laughed. “Yeah you definitely proved me right, baby," Alec said sarcastically, hiding his smile.
"You are far too smug for this early hour of the morning."
"I still don't know how I'm awake without coffee, let's stop somewhere on the way to your studio."
They hopped in Alec's car stopping outside a cafe that was across the street from the studio. Sitting outside they drank their coffee while munching on a couple of breakfast bagels. Alec checked the time cursing under his breath. "If I don't leave now, I'm gonna be late." Luckily all he had to do was walk a couple of minutes to the kindy. Bending down he kissed Magnus on the lips "I'll see you in a couple of hours," Magnus kissed him back. "You will indeed. Love you."
"Love you too, baby"
Entering the building felt weird. He hadn't been here in so long when he normally spent most of his days there, even though, he smiled as he stepped through into the playroom to see the first kids that were always here this early, Bella and Ryan, and Sarah his coworker sitting with them. They looked up as he walked through. Bella the little girl gasped so loudly he tried not to laugh but yeah he was smiling. "Alec!!!" She yelled running to him bouncing up and down on her feet in excitement. Alec crouched so he was on her level. "Hey Bella, how are you?"
"I'm good, but where have you been? You just disappeared."
"Don't you remember, I told you I was going away on holiday?"
She paused as if to think, her little finger on her chin. "Oh yeah!" She laughed. "Did you have fun?"
"I had a lot of fun. Did you have a lot of fun while I was away?"
"Yeah, we did! But we missed you, wanna come play blocks with me and Ryan. We are building towers." Alec followed as she didn’t give him the option to say no, immediately reaching for his hand dragging him to the block building corner.
He sat down next to them. "Wow Ryan, that's a big tower."
"Hi Mr Alec,” Ryan had always called him that, no matter how many times he’d tried for just Alec. Ryan continued. “It’s to keep away from all the zombies."
"The zombies?" He asked.
"Yeah, they're attacking."
"Oh no, we better get building more towers so we will be safe then"
Bella said, "You can build one next to mine"
Bella and Ryan were the best of buds, ever since they joined at the same time, bonding quickly as they were always the first two kids here.
Alec smiled at her saying okay before turning to Sarah. "Hey, good to see you."
"You too, have fun in Hawaii?"
Alec smiled to himself before saying "Yeah,"
Sarah laughed. "Oh we are definitely going to unpack that little smile later, I want all the deets."
"What are deets?" Ryan asked
Alec held back a laugh. "Like details."
"Oh," he said like he knew exactly what he meant, and for all he knew, he did. Kids were getting smarter and smarter every day.
Before more kids arrived Sarah pulled him aside, saying. “I should let you know, Ryan has been upset at times a lot more than normal recently. Little things stress him out, and he’s just been sticking with Bella a lot of the time. Just thought I should let you know,”
Alec looked back at Ryan who was showing Bella some good way to stack blocks. “Okay, thanks for the heads up.”
“It’s all good, I know he’s one of your favourites,”
Alec looked at Sarah affronted. “I don’t have favourites,”
“Please, we all know Bella and Ryan are your favorite,” Okay, yeah he did have favourites but he would never admit that out loud. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” He replied. Sarah laughed, “It’s okay we all have them, nothing to be ashamed of,” She winked and walked off to greet the next parent dropping off their child.
Soon enough more kids started arriving, some excited to see him and some walking right past him more interested in the toys. Bella appeared at his side. She was always at his side, as his little sidekick. "What are we doing today, Alec?"
"You know Magnus, the dance teacher?" She nodded enthusiastically. "Well, we are going to his studio for a lesson today."
She jumped with joy. "Oh yay! Will Maia be there too? We've had her the last two weeks and she's so cool!"
Alec laughed; it looked like Magnus had some competition. "Yes, she'll be there, she's come up with a new warm-up game for you all."
"I'm gonna go tell Ryan!" She sprinted off to tell her best friend.
Slowly but surely they got into the swing of things, the room full of excitable chatter. Yeah. It was good to be back.
Getting all the kids ready to leave he made sure all shoes were tied and jackets on, he reached the end of the line where little Ryan was still struggling with his laces. Alec bent down to help him but Ryan raised a hand. "No, I got it, Mr Alec." He said determinedly.
Alec sat back and waited, he'd admit the little boy was persistent. Eventually, he gave in heaving a great big sigh for such a little person, saying quietly. "Mr Alec, can I have your help, please?"
Alec's eyes softened seeing the unshed tears in Ryan's eyes having worked himself up so much. "Hey, buddy it's okay, you'll get it eventually." He said while tying his laces in a little bunny. Bella sat down next to her best friend. "Yeah, you'll get it. We can learn together." Ryan looked at her and smiled. Kids were so innocent, and pure it warmed his heart.
"C'mon you two everyone's leaving." Alec lifted Ryan up on his feet and held his hand as they followed the rest of the kids and Sarah out.
Walking along they made sure all the kids stayed close together keeping a watchful eye on them. It wasn't a long walk to the studio but he was always on high alert whenever they left the soft confines of the daycare. This was his idea if anything ever went wrong he would be the one to blame.
Sarah came up beside him and said. "So, that smile earlier, that wouldn't have anything to do with said dance instructor we are going to see right now?"
Alec tried but failed at holding back another smile. "Maybe," he paused. "But that's all you're getting for now."
"I'll take it. For now."
Alec shook his head with laughter feeling giddy as they came up to the door of Magnus' studio. He'd only seen him a couple of hours ago. It was ridiculous. Nevertheless, he couldn't wait to see him.
It was good to be back at work, getting reacquainted with his job. The place was in pristine condition all thanks to Maia. She really came through. The first thing he did when he arrived in the morning was catch up with her, see how she was doing, he was relieved to hear she was doing well even if some days life hit harder than others but in the grand scheme of things she knew her relationship wasn't gonna work out.
"Did you and Alec have a good time though?" She asked, changing the subject.
Magnus smiled. "We did, although I bumped into my ex. That part was not so fun."
"Wait, Camille? Oh god. How did Alec react?"
"Naturally he didn't like her." He laughed. "I'll have to tell you all about it after work. You have a lot to catch up on."
"Sounds like I do." She passed him some files that needed signing. "I'm just happy someone got something good out of that trip, I really am."
Magnus checked the time and cursed under his breath, "Speaking of Alec they're gonna be here in half an hour we better go set up."
Reaching studio one Maia followed him inside setting up the music as he grabbed props to use during the warm-up. Maia had set aside a bunch of ribbons and tiny little hula hoops. Watching a bunch of 4 years olds trying to hula hoop was going to be something.
It wasn't long before he heard the excited chatter of a bunch of kids enter the foyer. Quickly putting the last hula hoop down he waltzed out to greet them. "Kiddo's I've missed you all!" He beamed.
"Magnus" Some of them squealed.
"Sarah, Alec. Nice to see you again. Let's get them all inside" He ushered them through to the studio. When a little girl by the name of Bella snuck up next to him "Hi Magnus," She grinned.
"Hello sweetpea, how are you?"
"I'm good! How are you?"
"Well, I'm doing super now that I'm back." He picked up a hula hoop. "You see these? We are gonna be using them today."
"What is that?" She asked, perplexed by the object.
"We will all find out in a minute. Maia is gonna start the class really soon!"
She gasped. "Maia," She looked around trying to find her in the room and running for her as soon as she spotted her. Hmph.
"Seems you aren't the favourite anymore," Alec said somewhere near him.
"Nonsense." Magnus huffed but it was light-hearted. It was great to see Maia had bonded with the kids.
Maia got all the kids in their spots but one. That was weird; they were all normally eager to get started. Alec frowned looking at the little boy. Walking over he crouched down beside him speaking in hushed tones. Eventually, he picked the boy up and brought him over to where he was standing previously. "Ryan's not feeling well so he's gonna sit this one out."
"Oh, is he sick?" Magnus asked.
"Not sure, but he's been a bit upset all day so he's just gonna sit with me at the back."
Magnus smiled. His boyfriend was good with the kids. It made his heart do a little dance.
Alec walked to the back of the room, sitting down cross-legged with little Ryan to the side of him. He talked with him softly as the rest of the kids got ready for the beginning of the class. Apart from Bella who tugged at Magnus’ sleeve. "Is Ryan okay?"
Magnus crouched down. "Yeah sweetie, he's just gonna sit this one out okay, don't worry he's in good hands."
"Okay," But she still looked a little concerned for her friend. Once the music started she seemed to eventually relax.
As predicted, watching a bunch of little kids trying to hula hoop was beyond adorable and funny at the same time. But when one of them accidentally flung one across the room they decided to move on to some actual dancing before anything got broken.
Every now and then Magnus caught himself looking to the back of the room as he always did, looking at Alec. Except for this time Alec wasn't looking back, his sole focus on the little boy next to him. One of the things he loved most about Alec. He gives his all to his job, making sure each kid is okay and well. His co-worker Sarah came and sat next to them checking everything was okay. They chatted a little while Magnus tried to get the kids to follow a jump and clap move, Maia yelling out the next move, "Now twirl, hands out wide, careful not to hit the person next to you."
Soon enough the hour was up and the kids looked exhausted.
"Did you guys have fun?" Magnus asks.
"Yeah!" They yell back in unison.
"That's what I like to hear. We'll see you all next week. Off you go."
Sarah guided all the kids to wait in the foyer. Alec waited behind a fraction, so Magnus asked "The little boy, Ryan, is he okay?"
"Yeah, I think so. Must just be one of those days for him."
"I hope he feels better."
"Me too." He smiles, looking around to make sure no one is looking and leans in for a quick kiss. "See you after work?"
Magnus smiles back at him still feeling warm and fuzzy from the kiss. "Absolutely, we should go out for dinner."
"Deal." Alec kissed him again, quickly, before saying goodbye and taking the kids with him.
Magnus was still smiling to himself when he heard "Okay, back the fuck up, when did that happen?"
Startled, he turned around. "When did what happen?"
Maia rolled her eyes as in to say I ain't that stupid . "Don't think I didn't see that little kiss."
"Oh," Magnus couldn't contain his smile. "That. Yeah. We're kinda together now."
Maia hit him on the shoulder. "Why wasn't this the first thing you told me when you walked in this morning!?"
Magnus held his hands up. "I'm sorry I'm sorry, it was just work and everything but I was gonna tell you after."
"You better have," She sighed before saying. "I want it known at your wedding that I" she emphasised "was the reason for you two finally getting your butts into gear and getting together."
Magnus laughed. "Yes yes, I will dedicate a full 30 minutes in your honour."
"30 minutes? I deserve at least an hour. The Maia hour-long special."
"Okay, don't go overboard now,"
"Can't believe you didn't tell me" She muttered as she left the room preparing for her next class.
6 pm rolled around and evening classes were starting to kick off, but seeing as he didn't take the evening classes he was about to clock out when Maia waltzed into his office. "Prince charming is waiting for you downstairs."
“Perfect timing as always,” He smiled.
On his way out Maia stopped him. “Hey,” She said, reaching for his arm. “It’s nice to see you this happy,”
“Thanks,” He replied, ducking slightly to really look into her eyes, “And hey, you’re really okay?”
She waved off the concern, “As I said, some days are better than others, but yeah, I’m okay.”
“Well, I’m always here to talk. In fact, why don’t we go out, just the two of us sometime next week?”
“Yeah,” She nodded, “I like the sound of that. In the meantime, go have fun with your boyfriend,” She said the word boyfriend like she was in school.
Magnus stood straighter smiling to himself, “I will. See you tomorrow, Maia,”
“Night, Magnus,”
Just like Maia said, Alec was waiting downstairs looking at something on his phone, not noticing Magnus sneak upon him as he slid up beside him looking over his shoulder. “What you looking at?” He asked, laughing when Alec jumped slightly.
Alec turned to face him, “Just some of the pics Helen sent through last night, I forgot to show you.”
“Oh yeah, please forward them to me,”
Alec kissed him on the forehead before saying, “Will do. I already set this one as my wallpaper,” Magnus looked down at his phone seeing them, on top of the hill, the sun rising behind them, as they shared, what he call’s their first proper kiss. “She got that on camera, damn she’s good,” He chuckled, leaning into Alec’s embrace.”I love it,” He paused looking up at Alec, “I love you,”
“I love you, too.” Alec closed the little distance between them and kissed him, once, twice, holding him closer.
“You two cut that out, clients don’t need to see that,” Maia yelled from where she was at the top of the stairs.
Alec pulled back laughing, “Hey, Maia.” She waved back before going back into the office. “I guess we should go,”
“Any idea where we should go for dinner?” Magnus asked as they walked outside hand in hand, the sunset falling quickly behind the horizon, the rest of their lives ahead of them. Together. "How about your favourite Italian place near our apartment?"
"Sounds perfect,"
3 and a half years later
Rolling over in bed, the morning making itself known, he opened his eyes only to see the man next to him already looking at him. Smiling, Magnus shuffled over leaning on his elbow as he traced circles across Alec’s chest with his other hand, “Morning, hubby,”
Alec grinned, reaching over pulling him closer, Magnus now half on top of him. “I like the sound of that,”
Magnus kissed his cheek, “No takebacks now, Mr Lightwood-Bane,” He said while lifting his left hand to admire his wedding ring as he lounged on his husband's chest.
“No way in hell,” Alec surprised him by rolling them so he was on top making Magnus chuckle.
Married only two days ago, the honeymoon was in full effect starting last night in fact. Arriving late, they touched down in Hawaii, with late check-in and being exhausted from the travelling they fell asleep the minute they hit the sheets.
They’d come to the collective decision to have their honeymoon in Hawaii, something about them celebrating their love where it all began felt right. Same island, different resort. Same man, new memories.
Magnus had been grinning since they’d both said I do. When he was growing up he’d always dreamed of that love you read about in books, the ones you watch on tv, but to have it in real life. Yeah, he was lucky. His dance studio was still going strong, Alec, was still everyone's favourite kindergarten teacher. Life was good. It was better than good, especially with Alec, his husband. Yeah, it was going to take a minute for that to feel real. His husband was smiling down at him. “So, I was thinking, we waste the morning right here,” Alec whispered, leaning down, kissing his way down his neck. “And then we venture out for a quick lunch,”
Running his hands up Alec’s back and into his hair lifting his head, replying. “I’m liking the sound of this. What after?”
Alec kissed him quickly, “Let’s see where the day takes us,” Smiling while lowering a fraction to kiss below his ear, he added “But right now, it’s taking me here,” He kissed his cheek, “And here” Kissing his lips. “And oh, can’t forget here,” Alec continued, kissing just above his heart.
Magnus laughed, feeling himself blush as Alec continued lower. “I think I’m going to like where this leads,”
Alec looked up from where he had just placed a light kiss above his belly button, “That’s the plan,”
Coming up behind Magnus on the balcony he wrapped his arms around his waist, holding tight. Looking out at the view, he felt content to stay here, like this. Alec kissed Magnus' shoulder murmuring a soft, “I love you,”
Magnus turned, leaning back against the railing as he circled his hands around his neck, “I love you too,”
Not everyone was lucky to not only go on two honeymoons in life but to go on two with the same person. Whether one was fake or not, didn’t matter. What mattered was who he shared those experiences with and that was Magnus, his forever. His heart. His husband.
The end.
