Chapter Text

Lena had lived a thousand years and never has she felt such shame. Not even when she slay her own brother at Camelot. Ever since then she swore she would never perform such terrible acts again. And for the better part of several centuries, she had succeeded even managing to bypass wars across the globe. But never has she felt this terrible, and the reason she feels so terrible is that she knows what it is to be forced by others perception of her. She still remembers the smells of smoke and fire from when she had been tied to the stake as a village decried her a witch.

And yet here she was and honestly she hadn't even realised. Kara had seemed so normal Lena had never imagined something as trivial as a pair of glasses would be such a big deal to the blonde. She had taken them off the blonde against her protestations and then been forced to watch as Kara crumpled. She had replaced the glasses immediately, but by then the damage was done. The blonde was curled in the foetal position on her couch, her hands over her ears, her eyes clutched tightly shut. Tears leaked from her eyes as the rocked and Lena thinks about what could be causing it, surely she's seen Kara without her glasses before. It's then that she realises she hasn't, the realisation, the truth, it hits her like a freight train.

Holy shit, Kara's Supergirl.

But why would today be any different, it's then she remembers the distortion of her phone, the way her internet had been acting up.

A solar flare.

Shit.

For the first time in nearly half a century, Lena uses her powers again. She watches as the office is plunged into darkness, thick material covering the walls as Kara seems to slowly stop and peek carefully from behind clenched eyelids. When she isn't met by an assailing blast, she opens her eyes fully to see Lena knelt before her.

As soon as she sees the blonde open her eyes Lena begins to apologise, she begs Kara's forgiveness. Slowly as she speaks, she finds herself telling Kara more than she has spoken to anyone before her. She watches as Kara seems to realise just how sorry Lena is. She watches as Lena reveals herself and Kara's eyes widen. She watches as Kara's face becomes one of awe as she looks at Lena and what her magics have done. She nearly cries with relief when Kara pulls her into a hug, she does when Kara refuses to let her go.

Weeks pass, and they don't speak of 'the incident', Kara and Lena beginning to spend more, and more time together as their secrets now hang in the light of day.

Ever since they have started hanging out together Lena has had an office beside hers converted, it used to be for the COO, but with everything, since Lex, the room had been abandoned. In an attempt to make the most of their time together Lena had a one-way privacy field erected, and the wall removed. She then had the room turned into a lounge-like room with a desk for Kara to do her reporting from and an exit for Supergirl emergencies.

Kara had taken to it like a fish to water. She loved spending time with Lena, there was just something about her that made it so easy for Kara and her to be together. Snapper had leapt at the opportunity to get rid of Kara from the office, let alone the exclusive access she now has to Lena.

Alex, on the other hand, hadn't been especially thrilled, she still doesn't trust Lena and worries about Kara in a building where she knows they keep Kryptonite. Although after she and Kara had a few heated arguments about it, she backed off accepting that Kara would do as she wanted.

Kara was still a little confused as to why Maggie had winked at her when she insisted she was safe with Lena. Sometimes she just doesn't understand the tiny detective

Kara spends every day with Lena most of the time the privacy field is down, Lena's board almost has a fit when they realise that the woman is conducting business meetings and reviews with a reporter in the room. Lena, however, tells them to 'kiss her ass' something that she had never before considered saying. The board in their utter surprise at this don't say a word simply biding their time in case they turn out to be right.

They don't.

Kara visits Catco once a day for the next few months to get assignments and hand in work. That is until one evening Snapper crosses the line. He asks that she spy on Lena, he asks that she use her access to expose a new deal that L-corp has coming out soon. Kara tells him to go to hell. That night she takes the last of her things and her two weeks severance from Catco. That night as she sits beside Lena on the couch in her apartment she receives a text.

I'm proud of you Kara

And as she and Lena sit beside each other on her couch she knows there's nothing she would ever do to betray the woman beside her.

Chapter Text

The next morning she wakes with Lena snuggled tightly into her on the couch. They had fallen asleep at some point during their tv shows last night and despite her protestations to the contrary Lena was a koala when she was with Kara.

Kara smiles down at her as she looks at the beautiful woman sleeping in her arms. She feels the butterflies in her stomach begin to swirl, in these last weeks and months she had been coming to the realisation that there was more there with Lena than just friendship. Had she known the truth, that the brunette felt the same way she would have told her, but alas that was a conversation they had not had, and Kara would not risk their friendship, she would not risk Lena.

She lays there a few minutes before her phone begins to ring, it disturbs Lena enough to wake up the brunette making her growl and grumble before rolling off Kara and half walking, half staggering toward where the coffee is kept.

Kara reaches over and answers her phone "Hello?" She asks wondering who would be calling so early on a Saturday morning

"Miss Danvers, this is Mr Blake from National City News, how are you this morning?"

"I'm good Mr Blake, how are you?"

"I'm very well Miss Danvers, what I was calling about was that I had heard reports that you may no longer be employed by Catco Media, is this correct?"

"I don't know who you heard that from Mr Blake, but they are very well informed."

"Ahh, splendid, I was hoping that if it was ok by you, I might have a courier come by with some papers. We here at National City News have an offer for you."

"Mr Blake, I appreciate the offer, please send the courier. I can't guarantee I will accept your offer, but I will certainly look it over."

"Thank you, Miss Danvers, I hope you have a splendid day."

"You too Mr Blake, bye."

"Bye."

"Who was that Darling?" Lena asks from the kitchen as soon as Kara has hung up

"Mr Blake from NCN," Kara asks still a little shocked "he wanted to offer me a job."

"Is that something you want? I thought you were happy at Catco" Lena enquires. When Kara looks away bashful Lena asks "Kara, what happened to Catco?"

"I got fired, " Kara mumbles

Lena feels her blood begin to boil "Why did you get fired, Kara?"

"That's not important."

Realisation hits Lena as ice shoots through her veins "it was because of me, wasn't it? I'm the reason you were fired."

"No Lena, no, it wasn't because of you" Kara lies

Lena looks at her disbelief written across her features "Sure, then why won't you tell me why you were fired?"

"Snapper, he asked me to do something. Something I thought was wrong, I told him no. He said that if I wasn't going to do my job I didn't have one" Kara says her voice filled with emotion

Part of Lena wants to stop, but the other part of her knows she is only moments away from the truth and so she asks "What did he ask you to do Kara?"

"He asked me to spy on you!" Kara says as she collapses against the couch. She barely notices Lena moving, but before long the brunette has the blonde in her arms and is carding through her hair.

The rest of the morning is composed of two things, Kara and Lena sitting together as Lena works through what she had just learned. It is still an amazement that anyone cares enough for her to actually do something like this. And Kara fielding calls from every major news network out there, shocked as she learns she is being headhunted by pretty much everyone under the sun.

That afternoon as they sit together they begin to go through the offers that Kara had received from all the different media companies. They included things like; a living allowance, company car, share options, her own office and all sorts of other incentives. But as they sit together Lena decides that none of them is enough for the blonde beside her.

She thinks about how Kara is the smartest person she has ever met. How if Kara so desired she could walk into any university in the world and walk out with a dozen degrees in everything from History to Science, from Communications to Engineering, from English to Law. And then she thinks about the empty COO position she has.

The job has been empty ever since Lex showed himself to be a maniac. It had been Lena's job, she had never found someone who she believed could do it properly in her absence, so she absorbed it into her own workload. Except now, now she thinks she might have finally found someone who could do it right.

The next morning Lena leaves early for the office, she spends hours in talks with her lawyers and HR department, and they assure, her pending a few minor conditions. There would be no issue with Kara coming on board as her COO. By lunchtime, she has drafted a proposal she is sure that Kara will accept. That evening she shows up to Kara's papers in one hand, a huge bag of takeout in the other.

Kara is surprised, to say the least. She never imagined that Lena thought about her like this. Lena who is so brilliant thinks she would be perfect to fill her shoes. As they enjoy the meal, she sits there and goes through the offer. It is everything that Kara could ever have dreamed, except for one thing.

"I don't want to leave National City Lena," Kara says looking at the brunette across the table from her

"Kara, it would only be for a few months, just long enough to finish all the exams and things, I don't like it either, but the board will insist," Lena says folding her hands into the table

"Will you come with me?" Kara asks

Lena shakes her head "Kara… I…I can`t"

"Then I'm sorry Lena the answer is no" Kara says placing the papers aside

"Why Kara? People would literally kill for this" Lena asks befuddled

"Lena…" Kara tries

Again something is niggling at Lena "No Kara, National City can survive for a few months…"

"This isn't about National City!" Kara practically yells

"Then what? Why Kara? Why are you being so stubborn?" Lena asks her voice still rising, determined to push Kara to tell her the truth

"Because I love you, you idiot!" Kara says suddenly kissing Lena

"Ohhh" Lena mumbles, she really wasn't expecting that

Kara blanches as she looks away she says "I'm sorry, I, I shouldn’t have done that. Oh my god, I've ruined everything… I…"

She is cut off when Lena kisses her…"I love you too" Lena murmurs against Kara's lips "I suppose we need a way for you to stay in National City then," Lena says as she pulls back slightly eliciting a happy smile from Kara

The board was insistent, the COO had to have degrees from the country's top universities. Either Kara had to leave, or they would never approve the position. Lena was beyond determined. She threatened to fire the entire board. When they called her bluff, she did the next best thing she brought the universities to Kara. She paid to have the examiners flown all the way to National City, and within a week Kara had finished her exams. Two weeks later the diplomas came by courier. 15 Bachelors with first-grade honours, 14 masters and 12 PhDs. Kara was by nightfall the most qualified being in National City beside Lena herself.

That night they went to the new all you can eat rib house across the city. Kara had been dying to go and well, Lena would do anything for Kara. In the end, they sat there as Kara ate ribs one after the other getting more on her hands and face than she did in her mouth by Lena's opinion. Conversely, Lena slowly paced herself eating one after the other without a hair out of place. That is until Kara noticed, the blonde was horrified, how could Lena eat ribs with a knife and fork, then it hit her Lena didn't like ribs.

It took Lena nearly half an hour to calm Kara down and tell her that yes she did like ribs it was just habit left from her time under Lillian's thumb. Kara still wanted to leave until she saw that Lena was now holding the ribs in between her finger and happily tearing away pieces. At this point the owners who had been breathing a sigh of relief at the prospect of them (mostly Kara) leaving huff as they begin to cook more ribs, determined not to let the blonde deplete their entire supply.

By the time they leave they have been there for 4 hours, the serious eating was over in about 2 hours much to the owner's relief, and instead, Kara and Lena sat there and just talked. They talked about everything that had not yet seen the light of day between them, exes, favourite places, hoodies or jumpers. By the time they leave they begin to notice that a substantial crowd has begun to gather outside the rib house.

The tabloids, they're waiting for Kara and Lena.

They look to each other immediately they consider sneaking out the back, after all, it would be no issue for Kara to get them out of there. But then Kara notices the small mountain of ribs they have eaten, she feels sorry for the owners, then she thinks maybe they can help out a little.

Free publicity never hurt anyone right?

As soon as they exit the cameras begin flashing, already Kara can feel the pain beginning behind her eyes, and she knows that if Alex finds out about this, her sister will send her off to a DEO monastery in Siberia. Luckily Lena recognises the signs of sensory overload and quickly shields Kara with her body, when that isn't enough she does the only other thing she can think of. She takes Kara's face into her hands and kisses her. She watches as Kara's body language relaxes even as the flurry of camera shots increases. When they pull apart, they are bombarded by questions, but instead of focusing there Kara smiles at Lena all her focus on the woman she loves.

They quickly make their escape taking Kara's motorbike as Lena's Audi is surrounded. Kara handing her the spare helmet she carries for Alex. As soon as she is on and her helmet is secure, Lena's arms tight around her Kara guns the engine and takes off neatly avoiding the journalists who rush to block their path, after all, none of them has super reflexes.

When they arrive at Lena's apartment they fall against each other giggling, neither able to hold it in anymore. As they walk towards the elevator that leads to Lena's apartment the doorman, Gerome, gives them a wide smile and a nod. As soon as the doors of the elevator close they fall together with their arms wrapping around the other's waist.

And in a moment the passion from before is back and they fall together like two pieces of a whole as they press their way into Lena's penthouse. Their belongings flutter to the ground behind them as the door seals itself automatically. Kara and Lena make their way into the bedroom never detaching from the other as they go Kara knocks aside the furniture hearing several pieces crack and snap in their wake. And when they finally make it to the bed their passion is like a Forrest fire, until finally they collapse entangled together amidst a swirl of sheets as Lena clings to her alien heater and Kara purrs into Lena's neck

The next morning Kara wakes with a smile as she looks down at the brunette in her arms. She just sits there as the sun rises and watches as it bathes Lena's body in the shifting light. It is around 8:30 when Lena awakens and Kara feels the way Lena stretches like a cat in the morning sun until she sees the clock. Then all of a sudden Lena tenses. Instinctively Kara begins to run her fingers down Lena's spine, Lena seemingly melting into Kara's embrace in moments.

They lay like that until a loud banging sounds from the window startling the pair. Kara turns and sees a paparazzo hanging on a cable suspended from the roof, camera in hand as he tries to take photos of the pair. Kara is two seconds away from using her heat vision to cut the man`s ropes when Alex appears hanging from a rappelling line attached to a DEO helicopter quickly grabbing the man and cuffing him watching as his undoubtedly extremely expensive camera drops 40 floors to the pavement below. The man looks on in shock at his smashed camera. Alex, however, grabs him and attaches him to her role taking his watching as the DEO helicopter flies off into the distance towards an undisclosed location.

A few minutes later there is a knock at the door, looking with her X-ray vision Kara sees Alex and a team of agents carrying tools and equipment. Quickly they pull on clothes and make their way to the door

" set it up through there." Alex says pointing toward the lounge area

"Uhh... Alex, what's going on here?" Asks Kara while Lena cranes her neck to look at the equipment the techs are carrying. Kara almost laughs at the way her loves nerd side is shining through.

But she doesn't get the chance before Alex is answering "well, since you two are together now, congratulations by the way. The DEO decided you would need a few protections here, I think that this morning proves that"

"With all due respect Agent Danvers…" Lena begins

"Ms Luthor, don't get me wrong, I'm glad you and Kara are figuring out whatever this is between you, but even if she is Supergirl Kara is my little sister…" the and I won't have her naked body splashed across the internet goes unsaid but everyone still hears it.

Lena nods "if it will make things better for Kara."

"Good, I knew you'd understand, and by the way, keep that up, and we won't have any problems. But hurt my sister, and there is more than one person that can throw you into space."

"Alex!" Kara gasps scandalised

Lena just gives a small smile as she says "understood agent."

"Call me Alex, now why don't I show you what we're installing in your home."

The next few hours were spent reinforcing and outfitting Lena's penthouse with all sorts of new technology from windows that could stop a shell from a naval cannon to reinforced walls and floors of the same type of material as Kara's pod, to a direct link to the DEO and in an emergency Kara's AI. Most surprising was the sun room, formerly the second bedroom as soon as Alex told Lena how often Kara was injured then needed to stay at the DEO to heal Lena told her to put a bed in there. And just silently on the side, she had some of the techs install some of the red sun lamps in her bedroom.

Kara was puzzled at first, she couldn't figure out why Lena would want all this here. Sure they slept together, and sure Kara loved spending time with Lena, but they lived on different sides of town.

Lena had different ideas. As soon as she was sure the penthouse was safe, she took out the key she had cut and offered it to Kara.

They had practically been living together since the offer that Lena made, especially with all the tests that Kara had taken. Most evenings she just wanted to relax, and for her, there was nothing better than curling up beside Lena on the couch.

As for Lena if there was one thing that watching those you cared for die time and again did it was giving perspective. Lena had seen the way the world stole those you loved away in the blink of an eye. And Kara, she would not let that happen to Kara. Maybe that was why she had spent 3 days casting protection runes over Kara's super suits. All she knows is that when you truly love someone like she does Kara, there is no such thing as too soon.

It barely takes a moment for Kara to say yes

The board doesn't take it well, it is needless to say that they don’t like feeling like they have no control and when the two most powerful people on the board, the CEO, and COO are living together, and in a relationship. It makes them more than a little nervous. Especially the old white men who dislike the idea of two women on a board let alone two women in a relationship. They launch an injunction to fire Kara and Lena immediately on the grounds of a conflict of interest.

They fail spectacularly when Legal and HR both produce the paperwork for Kara's degrees and tell them that it was a predeclared ongoing relationship. All in all, it gives Lena the capital she needs to finally dismiss several of the board members and replace them with people actually capable of doing their jobs.

By the end of the day, Lena and Kara become even more legendary than they were before. Amongst the LGBTQ+ communities, they were famous for both being highly placed women in love, who took shit from no one. The media saw them as the newest power couple on the scenes, many of them already taking to calling them Karlena.

But amongst the business world, their legend was even greater, already stories were beginning to circulate about how they had orchestrated a purge of their own board. And amongst those in the departments below them, there were already rumours about how crazy skilled and smart Kara must be considering she had managed to straighten out half a dozen departments by the end of business day one.

And how on day two she managed to save a half a billion dollars while giving the employees better healthcare. Already people were touting her as the next up and coming businesswoman and wondering where in hell Lena found her.

Day three was met by Cat Grant sweeping into the office, glasses perched on her face she sweeps right past Jess, and Kara`s own assistant (which I don’t need Lena) Mike (whom yes, you do need Kara). She manages to sweep right past both assistants and walk in on Kara and Lena half in the others lap as they sit on the loveseat in Kara`s office. Both are working on their tablets, but even then it is clear to everyone just how much they value the other`s being beside them. Cat manages to snap a quick picture her flash attracting the attention of the pair. Kara moves to get up, but Lena firmly refuses to move, staying planted in Kara`s lap, stopping the blonde dead in her tracks.

“ahh… Catherine, so good to see you” Lena says with a smirk

“you too Morgana.” Cat says a challenging lilt to her voice

“ok fine… good to see you Cat.”

“you too Lena.”

"Ms Luthor, I'm so sorry! She ran right past me" Jess says quickly moving into the office Mike hot on her heels. Not even realising what she's interrupting.

"That's ok Jess, Ms Grant is an old friend, you can go back to whatever you were doing," Lena says a smile on her face

"Yes Miss Luthor," Jess says a little shocked but not questioning it as she makes for the door. Pulling a gaping Mike behind her as she shuts it

It's only when the door clicks that Kara recovers "Wait, you two know each other?" Kara asks looking between the two women

"Yes Dear we know each other" Lena says a soft smile on her face

"But, she knows who you really are" Kara half whisper yells in her shock

"Well do you want to tell her or should I?" Cat asks giving Lena a look of mild disappointment

Lena seems to swallow back something, Kara has the distinct impression it's some bad memories "No…no… I will"

Kara pats her thigh in a show of silent support promoting Lena to continue "We met, back in the 60's Cat was looking into some rumours she had heard about some paranormal events…"

"Which I was right about by the way," Cat says cutting in

Lena gives her a look as she breathes out heavily, before continuing "Yes, well, as I was saying, I was trying to help some young men avoid the draft. And Cat ever then the intrepid little reporter she was, decided to look into it. It was a hard time what with the Cold War going on and with tensions so high I didn't even realise until I'd done it until it was almost too late. I ended up using magic to blast Cat into another dimension thinking she was from the recruitment offices. Luckily I realised and managed to go get her." At this, she manages to chuckle a little "We've been friends ever since"

Lena was waiting for the tensing of Kara's muscles as she hears the story, it's not a story Lena is particularly proud of. after all, it isn't generally every day that she blasts a 12-year old into another dimension.

"Ooooh, was it Earth 1 with all the superheroes, or what about Earth 2 with the whole steampunk thing. Maybe Earth 23 with those annoying bounty hunters" Kara asks her voice shining with excitement

"You've been to other Earths?" Lena asks a little shocked

"Well yeah, remember I told you I went to help my friend, Barry," at Lena's still slightly unsure look she continues "The Flash"

"You mean The Streak is from another dimension… huh, that explains a lot…" Cat says looking mildly pensive.

It's then that Lena gets what she feared "so which dimension was it anyway?" Kara asks inquisitively "was it like here at all?"

Lena chuckles mirthlessly, a growing weight in her stomach "you could say that"

"So which one was it, Lee? come on tell me" Kara says pouting

Lena steels herself, breathing out heavily she says "this one"

Kara blinks… she blinks again… she bursts out laughing " seriously Lee which dimension was it?"

"I'm serious Kara"

"Wait, so you’re a sorceress, from another dimension?"

At Lena's sheepish nod Kara visibly gapes before suddenly she is looking at Lena in wonder "oh my god, how amazing is that! What was it like? Did you go back there? Did you guys have The Beatles? Did you have Churros?"

"Everyone has the Beatles" Cat says with a little chuckle even as Lena shoots her a look

"Wait, you're not angry?" Lena asks

"No? Why would I be angry?" Kara asks confused puppy expression in full effect

"Because I didn't tell you, we agreed no more secrets and I didn't tell you," Lena says like it's obvious

Kara's eyes look into her own as if into her soul as she asks "Did you intentionally not tell me?"

"Well…no" Lena says

Kara smiles "Then why would I be angry?" she asks pecking a stunned Lena on the cheek

Ignoring The smirking Cat watching them Lena continues to think a few moments before nodding. And surely enough barely moments later they are interrupted by the phone ringing.

Lena sighs as she walks over to answer it before picking up the handset "Lena Luthor speaking"

"Ms Luthor, this is Dr Brown down in R&D, we have a problem"

Several hours later Kara is watching as Lena sits at her desk working on something to do with a meta-materials alloy to be used in limb replacement. As soon as she had gotten off the phone Lena had given her apologies and made her way into her office, activating the privacy screen. Cat had stayed for about half an hour before Carter called her because of some problems with his father.

Just before she had to leave Cat gave Kara a hug and said "don't you dare hurt her" and just like that Cat had left the building the only sign she was ever there the empty Latte in the trash and the image she had sent to Kara's phone of her and Lena.

Kara looks out the window noticing that the sun has set and that night has fallen, its nearly 9 PM and Lena doesn't look like she's going to be done any time soon. She quickly sends Jess a message telling her and Mike to go home. She is unsurprised when Jess tells her Mike had left hours ago and that she is heading out. If there was one person who Kara knows works as hard as Lena it was Jess.

She moves to the privacy screen and deactivated it before padding in to stand behind Lena. She places a hand on either shoulder and bends down to press a kiss against Lena's neck, letting out a little hum of satisfaction as she does so. She watches the way that Lena seems to relax under her touch and turns to look at her. She can't help the giggle when Lena pecks her on the nose smiling softly.

"Have you tried using a hypercooling agent to sublimate the Xeno-ions in a high-frequency particle beam?" Kara asks shifting her attention to the papers on Lena's desk

Lena looks at Kara, then looks at the paper, then back at Kara before smiling brightly. She quickly writes Kara's suggestion down and sends it off to engineering for them to get started on in the morning before turning back to the blonde "have I ever told you how sexy it is when you talk science?" Lena husks

"Once or twice," Kara says moving in toward Lena's lips

"Hmmm… well, Ms Danvers… it is extremely sexy" Lena whispers against Kara's lips "what say you and I get out of here, maybe try out those new lights the DEO installed"

Kara gives her most flirtatious smile, which is ruined when her stomach chooses that moment to growl like a tiger.

"First though, let's feed the beast" Lena teases laughing at Kara's crinkle. Seconds later Lena is waving her hand and in moments they are standing in the dining room of their home.

It's a few moments before Kara notices distracted as she is by Lena and the whole teleportation thing. But then Kara notices what is on the table as her mouth begins to water at the piles of food that Lena has made appear from practically nowhere with but a wave of her hand

They sit through dinner sharing bits of small talk as well as discussing work until finally they are finished and this time there are no interruptions as Lena pulls Kara into their bedroom, a soft red glow emitting from under the closed door

Who knows the problem with living for thousands of years?

Anyone?

No one?

Well, contrary to popular belief, being functionally immortal isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. You get to watch the very best and the very worst of humanity as it drives itself toward it’s ever-evolving latest method of self-destruction. Morgana still has nightmares of the days of Camelot, the Knights of the round table, and everything that means. That’s the thing no one tells you when they talk about immortality, they always tell you about how you will get to watch cities rise and watch as the world marches forward. What they forget to tell you is the cost of such, everyone you have ever known, and ever will know, will one day die, and you will be there to watch. And then if that isn’t hard enough you have to keep moving and changing who and what you are every few years. Sure there are ways to hide, but eventually, even the most mundane person realises that you haven’t aged. Even the most powerful sorcerer can’t avoid the eyes of everyone. The desire builds over time, the desire to divest one’s self from the world, to step back into the wilderness, to simply disappear away from prying eyes, but eventually even that isn’t enough.

She has had many names over the years, at first she was Morgana, then Grace, Olivia, Bethany, Sandra, Sheryl. She has had more names than she can remember, but none of them has ever felt quite like her own. She has watched the rise and fall of civilisation, seen the rise of kings and the fall of tyrants, but she’s had enough, enough of the bloodshed and war. Even back at Camelot, the sight of blood turned her stomach, but now after millennium of watching people slaughter each other over everything from religion to money, to ideology she can’t take it anymore.

That is what prompted her latest endeavour it is the 70s and the Cold War is just starting to come to a head, the Americans are invading Vietnam and the draft has been tearing sons away from their families once again. She just can’t stand to watch it anymore and that is what prompts her to make a choice, choosing to help these young men avoid their deaths and escape the lottery of death.

It all goes spectacularly, that is until one evening in 1977 when she hears a loud creak echo through the warehouse she has been using as a centre of operations. In an instant she is awake and on her feet, she knew this day would come, knew the FBI was slowly but surely closing in and so when the being turns the corner she doesn’t hesitate to fire a portal spell at them. The only problem is that instead of watching a stooge in a suit get sucked into a different dimension she watches the surprised face of a young woman as she flies into the nether her camera and notepad still clutched tightly. She barely hesitates to leap after her, the realisation clawing at her, the person she has just attacked wasn’t there to arrest them, instead, she barely looked 16. She leaps through her own portal after the blonde managing to arrive mere moments later

The next morning comes sooner than they would have liked. It finds Kara and Lena pressed tightly together as the first rays of sunlight shine through the newly installed automatic window shutters as they slide open for the day. Lena blinks awake and for a moment she has half a mind to extinguish the sunlight shining upon them and just fall back into the warm clutches of Kryptonian aided sleep. Instead, however, she finds herself watching as Kara even in sleep seems to recognise the rising sun. She watches as the blonde seems to almost glow as the sun strikes her bare skin, replenishing the powers drained the night before and washing away the reminders of what they had done.

Lena can’t help it; she gives in after only moments moving to press a soft kiss to Kara’s lips as she stirs her partner awake. Kara for her part smiles into the kiss blindly following when Lena pulls away before trying to nestle herself into Lena`s chest above her heart.

A warm chuckle spreads through Lena`s chest as she gently tugs Kara upwards before saying “come now my love, it is time to get up”

“Don’t wanna” comes Kara’s stubborn sleepy reply

Lena smirks as she slips away causing Kara to groan as she says “that’s too bad, after all, if you were awake you could join me in the shower before breakfast”

Kara seems to surge upright as she locks eyes on Lena noting the way she sashays over to the bathroom. “I’m up!” She exclaims heading Lena chuckle before rushing after her into the bathroom.

When they emerge approximately half an hour later, they stumble into the kitchen as Kara and Lena make their way towards the stove. They barely manage to disentangle themselves over the next half hour. Kara using her powers to ensure that she doesn`t need to let Lena out of her arms instead using the time to shower her partner with love. Lena for her part doesn`t even pretend not to enjoy the attention instead making use of her powers to bring what equipment she requires to her rather than risking leaving Kara`s arms.

Eventually, though they are forced to separate as Lena finally finishes their food Kara sitting across from her at the kitchen bench as she works her way through several plates of eggs, bacon, waffles and hash browns. They sit there peacefully engrossed within their own bubble until they are startled suddenly as Kara`s phone starts ringing.

Kara can`t help the slight blush on her cheeks at being 'caught' as she makes her way to answer the phone. As she picks up the phone, she notices it is from the DEO emergency line.

She has barely answered the phone before the sound of gunfire rings across the line and in moments she is in her suit and headed for the window. As she makes to step through, however, she is stopped as Lena pulls her close a moment pressing a kiss to her lips before murmuring something so quietly even Kara doesn’t hear it before pulling back and saying "go get them Supergirl"

Kara smiles before leaping out of the window and rocketing off towards the tower of the DEO city base in the distance.

...

'Ok, so maybe this wasn’t the smartest idea' Kara thinks as she rockets at the speed of sound toward the DEO base. Ahead she can see the blast doors over the balcony shut and she kicks herself for not realising that they would have put the base into lockdown. Not to mention that after the events of myriad the base walls had been reinforced so that even a Kryptonian couldn’t break through them, so yeah, this was going to hurt.

She can see the blast door approaching rapidly and raises her arms to shield herself from the impact

Impact, except no, as she lowers her arms she finally manages to pull up. Stopping amidst the destroyed control room she watches as the barrier behind her seems to ripple as if phased before snapping solid again. However, Kara doesn’t have long to consider the implications of this as she is blasted backwards by an Infernian.

Rising from where she had landed in a now destroyed console, she looks down to her suit expecting to see a charred mess but instead watching as the logo seems to glow orange and yellow. Looking up she manages to barely dodge the next blast before rushing forward and punching the Infernian hard enough to send them flying through the nearby wall which promptly collapses atop them.

She starts to make her way toward the Infernian intent to figure out exactly what is happening when her com device crackles to life
"Fall back!" Alex's voice comes over the coms as she screams over the sound of gunfire

Instantly Kara focuses on finding her sisters heartbeat two floors up in the hallways toward the mass driver cannon hidden in the roof. Moments later Kara finds herself rushing towards the collapsed staircase quickly floating upwards. Reaching the level, she had heard Alex on she opens the door only to have to quickly duck back as a Hellgrammite releases a shower of quills towards her. She waits a moment for the quills to stop before quickly peeking out the door ducking back again as another rain nearly strikes her.
She waits a moment trying to figure out what she can do to get past the hellgrammite when she notices that suddenly things have gotten quiet, or rather that one thing, in particular, has gotten quiet.

She can’t hear Alex`s heartbeat.

It’s like a wave of anger, fear, and determination roll over her and this time she doesn’t hesitate to rip the reinforced door off its hinges and throwing it embedded spines and all at the Hellgrammite. There’s a roar as the hellgrammite dodges the door but by then it is too late as Kara’s heat vision burns into the face of the Hellgrammite and she rushes forward to stab it with one of its own spines that had embedded in the wall.

She doesn’t slow down as the hellgrammite falls ignoring the alien in favour of rushing towards where she had last heard Alex. As she turns the corner the sight that she meets, however, sets her blood ablaze with fury. There standing over Alex are what appear to be 4 Valeronians their atomic blades glowing, and Alex laid out on the ground her gun cast away and blood welling from her injuries.

To say that Kara loses it would be an understatement. Valeronians are powerful, and a war squad like this is a deadly adversary to most anyone. However, they have never faced a Kryptonian in the midst of a blood rage. They don’t even see what hits them, instead in mere moments, faster than the eye can blink Kara has driven into their midst, taken their blades from them and proceeded to impale them into the nearby walls before slowing just long enough to sweep Alex into her arms and speed towards the medical bay.

As she makes her way there, she can already tell that she is going to be too late. She can feel Alex fading away in her arms, she knows that there is nothing the DEO can do for Alex now. And so, she turns herself downwards surging towards the labs, Alex`s labs that hold the last chance she has to save her sister. As she enters the lab, she finds it trashed, the signs of a fight clear and fear courses through her until she finally makes her way to the hidden panel in the back of the room. As the door opens, she quickly grabs out a satchel with the sigil of house El emblazoned upon it. Placing Alex down on one of the tables she puts the satchel next to her before using her strength to quickly bar the doors with whatever she can find.

As soon as the doors are sealed, she opens the bag ignoring the warning labels within she takes out the chest piece within before attaching it to Alex just above her heart. Knowing she doesn’t have long Kara quickly takes the tubing and other equipment from the satchel placing them upon her own chest and connecting herself to Alex. She quickly moves so she and Alex lay atop tables mere feet from each other the tubes running between them and then she pushes a button on her chest piece as everything goes black

... ...

“Jess, can you please ask Kara to come down here please, I need her help with this” Lena asks her assistant barely looking up from her experiment she has been running since earlier that morning.

When she doesn’t hear a response, she looks up seeing Jess standing there an apprehensive look on her face as she asks “Jess…”

Then she hears the words she dreads hearing “Ms Danvers hasn’t come in today Ms Luthor, and I couldn’t get through to Agent Danvers either.”

Lena is utterly incensed, not annoyed, not irritated, incensed. It has taken her nearly two and a half hours at this stage to get this far. Sure, she knew where the DEO was, it's not like she doesn’t have access to resources that would make any government agency swoon, let alone her magical abilities. And yet she finds herself yet again standing before what looks like an apartment building in the middle of downtown for the third time this afternoon.

She can feel a buzzing at the back of her mind, telling her that she is wrong that Kara is not here. And yet, at the same time she can feel a trace of her own magic, the same magic she had attached to Kara and her suit that morning before she left. It's like the building itself wants her to keep walking, to forget about it and look somewhere else, and so it is with frustration she brings her hand up to her temple squinting suspiciously at the building as she tries to rub the tension headache away.

Then just as she is about to yet again walk away, and recheck if she has the right building, she spots it. The faintest outline surrounds the building invisible to the naked eye and pulsing a pale blue colour. The realisation shocks Lena, and moments later she can feel the illusion fall as she looks up at the DEO building, fifth-dimensional energy, she’s going to burn that imp.

Stepping forward she draws her magic around herself shielding herself from the fifth-dimensional energy as she walks toward the sealed blast door covering the main entrance. Focussing she draws the energy shaping it into a blast of pure cold freezing the blast door before kicking it and stepping through its shattered remains.

As she steps into the foyer, she can feel the magic she bound to Kara calling to her, telling her Kara is in trouble. She doesn’t falter quickly breaking into a sprint towards the staircase but as she begins to climb, she feels a surge, barely managing to dodge a blast of light that nearly strikes her.

Looking up she feels the rage and anger fill her as she growls out “Mxyzptlk”

“ah hello my dear Morgana, or I suppose I should call you Lena,” Mxy says as he stands atop the staircase a small ball of energy tossing between his two hands

“Step aside Mxyzptlk, or I swear I will cast you into the fires of damnation” Lena growls instinctively bearing her teeth

“ahh, well I have to say I didn’t see this coming; you are much better competition than Kara`s previous suitors,” Mxy says with a smirk
“THIS IS NOT A GAME!” Lena screams her hair floating up behind her as her eyes glow and flames build around her “I swear Mxy…”

“yes, yes, I heard you the first time, fires of damnation and all” Mxy says cutting her off “but we haven’t even had the chance to catch up…”

This time it is Lena who interrupts, she finally snaps and moments later she focusses on Mxy and her magic surges. The air crackles magic saturating the room as Mxy doesn’t stand a chance as the energy overtakes him slamming him backwards and away from the stairs into the wall burning the very concrete, he is pressed against as Lena stalks towards him her eyes still aflame

Lena's voice takes on an echo-ey quality as if coming from all sides as she growls out “if you don’t banish yourself this second imp I swear I will do it for you, you had just better hope Kara is alright or you will feel pain you can scarcely imagine”

Confronted by the goddess of vengeance standing before him even Mxy feels fear quickly muttering “kltpzyxm” and quickly vanishing into the fifth dimension.

Letting the rage drain from her Lena lets her magic ebb and flow back to normal as she focusses on the trace of magic she can feel from Kara. Looking upwards she traces the flow finding Kara in Alex`s lab. She lets her sight cast with her magic and what she sees causes a shocked gasp to loosen from her lips as she sees a pale Kara and Alex connected together by a mess of wires and tubes. Drawing back into herself she starts to run, sprinting up the stairs ignoring the way her lungs protest as she speeds towards Kara.

Coming up on the door she barely slows bringing up her magic to slam through the obstacles she had seen and coming skidding to a halt next to Kara before taking Kara’s hand in her own and releasing a soft, broken “Kara” as a tear rolls down her cheek.

Chapter Text

Lena stays there motionless for what feels like forever, she can feel the wetness of tears upon her cheeks and the clench in her chest as she watches Kara’s chest struggle to rise and fall. Her entire world is tuned to Kara`s every movement watching, waiting, hoping that somehow Kara will awaken, that she will see those eyes once more.

Then it happens, Kara’s chest shudders her entire body stiffening, and then she goes still. Lena’s heart fills with panic, ‘NO!’ she screams internally. Her magic coils around her casting the room in a yellow glow, and then it hits her. Drawing forth every ounce of magic she possesses she focusses on a spot above Kara. She feels her fingers and hands start to burn from the raw force of the magic, but she ignores it. Instead, she pushes her magic further, feeling the creaking in her very bones as she strains farther than she ever has before, until finally, it happens. There hovering above Kara mere inches from her chest is a ball of energy, it pulses a brilliant white/yellow and before she even realises what she is doing Lena pushes the ball into Kara’s chest.

The moments that follow are the longest she has ever experienced, this is it, if this doesn’t work nothing will. Then just as her hope is nearly extinguished it happens, Kara’s chest begins to rise again, at first it is weak, but slowly it grows stronger. Soon however her eyes are drawn away as she notices that Kara is not the only one growing stronger. She watches as Kara’s blood flows towards Alex, she watches the way it enters glowing, charged with energy, and returns dull.

Over the next hour she watches as the sisters slowly grow stronger, Kara for her part seems to be recovering faster than Lena dared dream. Alex, however, does something curious, she like Kara seems to be recovering quickly, except she also seems to be undergoing some changes as her hair lightens becoming a more brilliant scarlet, her wounds and scars disappear, and her muscles start to fill out more. The blood circulating between them at this stage however appears entirely charged with energy, no longer showing the drain as it leaves Alex and returns to Kara instead returning to a charged energetic crimson.

It takes another three hours but finally, Lena gets what she wishes for. She is still standing there watching Kara and Alex as she waits when finally, she hears something that causes her heart to miss a beat

“Oww, fiddlesticks that hurt” comes Kara’s voice in a strained groan as she slowly blinks awake.

Lena feels the dam break once more and before she even has the conscious thought, she is launching herself at Kara. She impacts Kara squarely on the chest as she kisses her pouring the hours of emotion into the kiss before pulling back

Kara for her part gains a dreamy, love-drunk smile on her face as she asks “Lena?”

“I`m here my love,” Lena says caressing Kara’s cheek before something hardens inside her as she says “I’m glad you’re alright, but once you’re better you and I are going to have a conversation you are not going to enjoy”

Kara’s face becomes sheepish and she nods “I’m…”

Lena interrupts kissing Kara again before saying “Alive, and that’s all that matters for the moment”

Then comes a groan from behind them as Alex seems to roll half off her table “As cute as you two are can someone tell me what the hell is happening” she asks before noticing what rests against her chest and suddenly turning aghast as she asks “Kara, tell me you didn’t”

For once Kara doesn’t become nervous, instead, steel flexes within her spine as she manages to lift up enough to look at Alex despite Lena still being perched on her lap. “I didn’t have a choice; you were dying Alex”

“Kara, …” Alex begins only to get cut off

“No Alex!” Kara interjects before finishing in a softer tone “You were dying, I held you in my arms and you were dying. I can`t do this without you, you, I lost everything once Alex, I can’t lose you too”

Moments later Alex has somehow managed to make her way over. Kara, Lena, and Alex finding themselves in a group hug as Alex sighs before just holding them tightly.

When they eventually pull away Alex asks, “So what the hell happened anyway, one minute everything was fine, the next half the agents disappeared, the cells opened, and the base went into lockdown.”

“I think I can answer that,” Lena says as she is met with a pair of curious looks, she says “Mxyzptlk was here when I arrived”

“I’m going to kill that imp” Alex growls out disentangling herself to move away with the intent of hunting down and killing Mxy in the most painful way she knows

However even Alex`s assured stride stutters as she hears Kara say “Get in Line”

Alex turns back shock on her face as she looks at Kara “Uhm what?”

The look on Kara`s face is murderous as she says “I said, get in line, that bastard nearly killed you…”

“Actually, Mxyzptlk isn’t here anymore” Lena interjects once more drawing inquisitive looks from the sisters. Continuing she says “I may have been a little bit pissed when I realised something was wrong with Kara, and well one thing lead to another before he...” before trailing off

Kara places a hand on Lena`s as she asks, “He what?”

“Before he banished himself to avoid me” Lena offers with a sheepish smile as she looks between the sisters

Alex looks a bit chuffed as she says “You know what, you’re alright Luthor” before looking around her and finally taking noticing the mess that is her lab and groaning “This is gonna take so long to fix”

Lena, however, has already turned her attention back to Kara as she enquires softly “Kara?”

When Kara looks up at her, however, she feels a surge of heat at the way Kara’s eyes seem almost black and moments later Kara is kissing her soundly saying “That is really hot”

Several hours later Kara Lena and Alex find themselves standing in the DEO control room surveying the destruction that had been wrought by the roving alien hordes Mxy had released.

“Hey, Alex?” Kara asks

“Yeah, Kar?” Alex says looking up from a destroyed console

“Where`s Vasquez, and J’onn?” Kara inquires

Alex seems to stutter as if amazed the thought had escaped her before asking “What?”

Spotting Alex`s reaction Kara explains “yeah, they aren’t here, I got a call before I came from Vasquez and it sounded like you were under attack, but when I got here…”

“I…” Alex begins before trailing off a far-off look appearing

Kara looks at Lena aghast at the possibility as she asks “Mxy wouldn’t have just, you know? …”

Lena steps closer wrapping an arm around Kara`s waist as she says “No dear, even Mxyzptlk isn’t that savage, he would have sent them somewhere where they couldn’t interfere”

This seems to reassure Kara as she snuggles a little closer to Lena taking the offered comfort. However moments later they spring apart as Alex releases a startling shout followed by a burst of heat vision appearing as Alex flies backwards embedding into one of the destroyed consoles.

Kara immediately strides forward prepared to end the Infernian that she thinks has just blasted Alex. However, she is brought up short by what she sees as she finds an empty swatch of concrete followed by Lena drawing her attention to where Alex is attempting to disentangle herself from the mess of computer parts.

“Alex?” Kara asks worriedly as she approaches where Alex is trying to get up

“No! Kara Stay Back!” Alex exclaims then moments later Kara is forced to dodge as another beat of heat vision scorches its way across the room narrowly missing her.

Kara doesn’t hesitate even a moment rocketing over to drag Alex out of the destroyed console and pulling her into her chest as Alex sobs whilst trying to regain control. Gently Kara strokes her fingers through Alex’s hair as she murmurs soft reassurances to her.

Eventually, when Alex’s sobs subside enough Kara says “Alex, I need you to do something for me, alright” when Alex nods hesitantly into Kara’s chest she continues, “Alex, I need you to focus only on me and Lena, ok? Just focus on the sound of our heartbeats, the sound of my voice, let everything else just fade away”

It takes a few minutes but eventually, Alex seems to relax and slowly pulls away from where she stands to wipe the tears from her face. “I…” she begins only to cut off as she finds she doesn’t have the words.

“Hey Lex, it’s alright, you’re ok, we`re all ok” Kara assures moving to put her hands-on Alex`s shoulders as she looks her in the eyes. Seeing Alex manage a weak smile and nod Kara smiles before pulling her into a close hug “this is going to be so amazing, you’ve no idea how long I have wanted to hug you properly, but your squishy human body stopped me” Kara says beaming

This time Alex manages a proper smile and a small chuckle as she pulls Kara as close as she can and hugs her as hard as she can. As soon as she does, however, Kara lets out a small squeak causing Lena who stands watching the siblings laugh at Kara`s reaction.

“not to interrupt, but I think we may have become side-tracked” Lena begins causing Alex and Kara to release each other from what was surely building into a contest between the now super-powered siblings. When she has their attention, she continues “whilst I am certainly interested in whatever it is that gave Alex her newfound powers shouldn’t we be dealing with other things first?”

Kara cocks her head in her ‘confused puppy’ expression

Lena sighs as she says “missing DEO agents, Prisoners who undoubtedly need to be fed, not to mention what the hell we are going to say about why Kara and myself have disappeared”

The next hour is spent planning as the trio come up with a plan. Kara will be taking the next two days off from work at L-corp claiming to be sick in order to use her abilities to get through as much of the critical duties she can. At the same time, she will be helping Alex get used to her newly acquired abilities as she goes searching for the missing agents. During all of this Lena will also be staying at the DEO with Kara and Alex under the guise of staying home to help Kara recuperate as she uses her magic to repair the damage and destruction wrought on the base.

The next few days go relatively smoothly, all things considered. As it turns out being attached to Kara while Lena filled her with solar energy had a rather unforeseen side effect; similar to what happened to Livewire, Alex`s DNA had changed. Apparently, the stress on Alex`s body had actually killed her, something that had Kara in tears when they figured it out. However, by having Kara’s blood circulating through Alex`s veins she was able to keep Alex alive as her powers sought to repair the damage. Had it not been for Lena and her actions however both would be dead as the injuries slowly drained Kara’s powers as they laid in the lab, instead Lena had essentially placed a micro-star into Kara’s chest giving her, her own solar energy source which as they soon found out provided some unexpected benefits.

“hit me” Alex demands as she bounces back and forth on her heels in the DEOs Kryptonian training room

“Alex, no” Kara says as she crosses her arms firmly across her chest

“Kara, hit me,” Alex says this time moving forward to tap Kara’s arms with a light punch

“Alex” Kara groans looking skyward

Alex settles to a more normal stance as she says “Kara we`re never going to find out what it did if you don’t hit me”

“Alex please there has to be another way” Kara implores thinking about how she had nearly lost Alex just days prior

Becoming frustrated again Alex says “None that is as effective as this so will you just hit me for god’s sake”

“Fine” Kara says before drawing back and hitting Alex

Alex goes flying across the room and impacts the mats hard. After a few moments though she rises to her feet as she says “well, that hurt more than it should have” then after a moment of thought she asks, “Hey Kara, can you fly at the moment?”

“Alex you know that’s not possible at this level of Kryptonite,” Kara says looking at her sister

“humour me” Alex deadpans

Kara shakes her head before trying, shock evident as she quickly raises above the floor.

“well, I guess we know some things have changed” Alex deadpans before saying “I’m going to raise the Kryptonite levels a bit, tell me when you feel discomfort or stop floating ok?”

“Alright,” Kara says before continuing “but if you get sick from this…”

“Kara, I’m human,” Alex says with exasperation

“not anymore” Kara insists stubbornly

“fine,” Alex says hoping to avoid an argument “if I feel sick, we`ll stop”

Alex makes her way over to the terminal on the wall where the controls for the emitters rest. Then she starts to gradually turn up the dials as she watches Kara

Turning around she says “Kara, can you still use your heat vision?”

“let me check,” Kara says before turning and melting a dumbbell in the corner

“well, you’re immune to kryptonite,” Alex says before pondering ‘I wonder if this means she is also immune to the effects of the red sun, oh well we`ll test that later’

After the events in the training room, Alex decides to take a break from figuring out her and Kara’s new powers. While Kara makes the rounds throughout the base first feeding the prisoners that Mxy hadn’t released then finding Lena and convincing her to go for lunch, Alex spends the time checking and updating her program she had set to find the missing DEO agents. She goes through the data spit out by the system until finally, she spots it, the Antarctic base, it had suddenly experienced a significant increase in power usage and not just that, but there are trace levels of magic around the facility.

Finally, on the third day, Alex and Kara get the chance to head to the Antarctic base. When they get there, they quickly find out that Mxy had locked the agents in the base and stolen all the equipment that would allow them to escape through the desolate wasteland around them. It takes several hours and a flight to Mcmurdo where Alex commandeers a pair of C5 Galaxy, but they manage to get everyone who had disappeared on a flight back to National City. Of course, Kara takes this opportunity to tease Alex about her forgetting that aside from J`onn none of the other agents can fly.

The entire flight back she and Alex explain what had happened to J`onn as they escort the agents toward the city ensuring no one tries anything whilst they are in transit. To say J`onn is a little upset is an understatement and there is no doubt that is Mxy were to ever show his face back in National City J`onn will be doing everything in his power to banish him in the most painful way possible. That being said he can't help but smile when Kara starts rambling about how amazing it is to be able to hug Alex properly and how now Alex will be able to help with everything, that is until J`onn starts to foresee the extensive overtime and hazard bills that Alex will be lodging.

Once they return to National City and have everyone back at their stations Alex, Kara, and Lena finally have a chance to go home since the events caused by Mxyzptlk. Kara and Lena quickly make their way back to the apartment intent on taking this opportunity to pass out in each other’s arms for the next 14 hours before they are required back at L-corp. Alex, however, is less enthused, and instead, she finds herself standing in a DEO locker room indecisively looking down at her phone which shows maggies number and back up to the mirror that is in front of her.

Eventually she builds up the courage to hit the call button and bring the phone up to her ear. It rings twice before connecting.

“Hey Danvers, is everything ok, you went missing for a couple of days there?” Maggie asks

Alex swallows the lump that has appeared in her throat “Uhm, Mags, something happened”

Immediately Maggie notices Alex`s tone “shit Danvers, are you ok?” she asks

Alex nods before realising Maggie can’t see her and saying “uhm, I am now”

Not believing her Maggie can be heard getting up from her desk as she says “stay there, I`m coming to get you”

“Mags…” Alex begins

"Nope, I`m on my way Danvers," Maggie interrupts before asking "I assume you`re at the city base"

Alex answers despite the nervousness that she feels in the pit of her stomach “Yeah”

“I`ll be there soon ok, love you” Maggie responds

Alex blushes at the words “love you too” she says before they quickly disconnect the call

Its nearly fifteen minutes later when Alex is standing in the garage of the DEO waiting for Maggie to arrive. Much of that time she had spent looking into the mirror trying to adjust to her new appearance. Part of her is worried that Maggie won’t like it, won’t like her, not after she has changed so much. Sure, logically she knows Maggie loves her but there`s still that part of her, the part that voices her darkest thoughts and sounds suspiciously like Eliza, that remains unconvinced.

She looks up just in time to see Maggie`s cruiser pull into the garage, the detective parking in one of the bays designated for visitors and climbing out. As Maggie makes her way over towards the entrance Alex takes a deep breath before stepping out. Maggie approaches her rapidly focused on her phone as Alex ignores the buzzing in her pocket, undoubtedly Maggie texting her.

Speaking softly Alex says "Mags"

Maggie looks up confusion fading into realisation as she stops dead in her tracks asking "Alex?"

Alex nods tears beginning to form in her eyes

Maggie being quick on her feet doesn't even hesitate moving to hug Alex tightly saying, "well damn Danvers, you got taller, how is that fair?"

Alex lets out a watery chuckle wiping the tears away as she wraps her arms around Maggie tightly "are you sure you didn't just get shorter?"

Maggie pulls back levelling her with a playful glare, "watch it Danvers" she 'warns' pressing a finger to the centre of Alex`s chest

The ride back to the apartment is silent as Alex looks out the window planning out how to answer the questions, she knows Maggie is sure to have. The only interruption is when Maggie takes the opportunity to lace their fingers together over the centre console.

When they get into the apartment the door closes and Maggie wraps her arms around Alex asking, "bed or couch?"

"couch," Alex says pressing a kiss against Maggie's crown where it rests against her chest.

When they are seated on the couch Alex snuggles into Maggie where she sits behind her. Maggie having instantly realised this was one of those situations where Alex needed to be held but couldn't bring herself to ask.

Once they are settled Alex considers carefully before beginning "do you remember a couple of months ago when Kara and I found that Kryptonian pod in the arctic?"

Maggie smiles dimples on show as she asks, "You mean the one you got really excited about despite the fact that it had been there the last several hundred years?"

Alex can’t help the small smile that graces her lips at Maggie’s tone as she continues "Yeah, well what I didn’t tell you was what we found inside it"

"Babe, please tell me you didn’t release an ancient Kryptonian virus," Maggie says trying to lighten the mood

Alex scoffs "hardly, as if I’d ever be that careless in my lab" then she becomes more sombre "we found a satchel with the sigil of the house of El on it. At first, we didn’t know what it did, but about a month ago we figured it out. Apparently, when Krypton was at war the great houses came up with a way to save someone on death's door."

Realising where Alex is going with this Maggie’s voice breaks and her arms tighten around Alex as she says "Alex..."

Hugging Maggie's arms tighter around herself Alex continues "I... I died Maggie. Mxyzptlk released the prisoners in the DEO and portaled out most of the agents in order to draw Kara in. I was with Stevens and O`Reilly working on the mass driver when they started attacking." Alex pauses collecting herself as she continues "we were outnumbered and outgunned I managed to lock O`Reilly and Stevens in the room with the cannon but there were too many."

Looking over her shoulder Alex sees Maggie’s eyes filled with silent tears and it almost stops her from continuing but she knows if she doesn’t get this out now, she never will. "eventually Kara arrived, but she was too late, I remember looking up at her from the floor, I could tell she was too late, there was too much blood, but Kara" she smiles grimly "Kara saved me, I don’t remember much really it’s just what I was told, but Kara took me to my lab and joined us using the device."

Then sighing Alex finishes " It wouldn’t have mattered to be honest if it weren`t for Lena we would both still be dead, but somehow Lena realised something was wrong and came for Kara, when she found us, well it was magic"

This time when she stops, she looks at Maggie and she can see the pain, the loss and devastation that rests on Maggie’s features and it hurts her more than the atomic blades ever could have.

"Mags..." Alex begins only to be cut off as Maggie pulls her tighter and sobs into her chest swapping their positions gently Alex pulls her as close as she can shushing her gently as she says "it’s alright Maggie, I’m right here, just let it all out, I’m here, just let it all out"

When they eventually pull apart and Maggie manages to regain control she says "I swear I’m going to rip that imp limb from wretched limb"

In the Fifth Dimension

Mxyzptlk stands watching through his mirror into the world of man. Despite himself and the power he wields even he shudders at the threats being levelled against him. Morgana had been scary enough and he makes mental note to never interfere with her in any future reality, but the way the tiny detective plots his demise it brings him up short. Walking over to the door marked 'To Earth 38' he locks the door and throws the key as far as he can.

Chapter Text

Several weeks have passed since the events that nearly lead to the loss of Kara and Alex.

For all that time Alex and Maggie haven’t left their apartment. Alex is struggling with her new powers and the adjustment to being able to deadlift a 747. Maggie for her part is trying to help, but she is still struggling with how close she came to losing Alex without even knowing.

Kara and Lena spend these weeks helping both Alex and Maggie come to terms with the new reality they are living in. Kara taking Alex through everything she used to do back in Midvale to control her powers and reactions as Lena helps Maggie come to terms with the risks and threats she hadn’t considered previously.

It only takes Alex a few days to realise just how much control Kara is constantly exerting over her body. A realisation that only becomes more defined once Kara starts taking her through the Kryptonian physics required not to accidentally impart too much force when sitting on a couch. This leads to a lot of discussion about things like how Kara manages not to crash through the floor, or accidentally start levitating, and apologies about the merciless teasing Alex had heaped on Kara for vaporising a popcorn machine (or 5).

For Maggie, the hardest part is realising that despite being a cop, and despite having been facing aliens down for most of her career there are still things she doesn’t even know enough about to fear. She had known that there were beings of immense power out there, hell, her future sister in law was a alien who had threatened to throw her into the sun when giving her a shovel talk. But she didn’t quite know what it meant to have beings that could re-write reality itself exist, and the thought that some being could just decide to undo everything in her life with a snap of their fingers terrifies her. Surprisingly enough though that fear, that terror, doesn’t extend to Lena, maybe it’s because she knows Lena saved Alex and Kara, perhaps it is to do with the look in Lena’s eyes when she sees the sisters together, but she knows that Lena would never allow someone to un-write her or Alex, if for no other reason than the pain it would cause Kara.

Despite this help though almost a month passed before Alex and Maggie feel comfortable enough to leave their apartment. Maggie for her part refuses to let Alex out of her sight and Alex is still struggling with the math necessary to walk down the stairs. Despite this though they eventually do begin to make their way back into the world, but they do not manage to do so without their share of obstacles, the least of which is Maggie’s job.

According to the commissioner of the NCPD, Maggie’s absence especially given her rank and the lack of notice was unacceptable. Kara had tried to advocate for Maggie, even dragging Vasquez down to 1 Police-Plaza under the guise of Alex’s partner. And yet the commissioner didn’t care, rather he was looking at this as a opportunity to excise what he viewed as a problem from his command. Apparently the close relationship Maggie had with the DEO, combined with her inclination to allow the DEO to exert their jurisdiction over what the commissioner called NCPD crime scenes was scene as a detriment by the higher-ups especially with budget meetings coming. And so they found a way to fire Maggie from the NCPD, citing her failure to report for duty as grounds for termination, despite the fact that were she anyone else she would have been on compassionate leave.

After Alex had heard this it had taken both Kara and J’onn to stop Alex from flying down to 1 Police-Plaza and dismembering the police commissioner. The thing that ultimately seems to calm her however being when J’onn points out that now she has a excuse to work with Maggie full-time should Maggie agree to join the DEO. An offer that Maggie is quick to accept, especially since it will keep her closer to Alex.

It is then that they did find in true Alex Danvers’ fashion, that when she was pissed Alex was able to control her powers flawlessly, but as soon as she calmed down she started having control issues. This is something that both amuses and worries Kara and J’onn and results in Alex being given mandatory ‘talk time’ with the DEO psychiatrist, something that Alex miraculously doesn’t argue about, and instead takes with remarkable grace.

Chapter Text

Unsurprisingly with Alex and Maggie both now working for the DEO things start to change rather rapidly. The most surprising of these changes is that somehow even with her new abilities the overtime that J’onn dreaded Alex accruing had never actually come. Instead if anything Alex was actually leaving work on time and without having to be chased out by Vasquez or threatened with paid leave by J’onn. Instead like clockwork she would arrive in the morning spend several hours either in her lab, or training and then go help out around the city or accompany Maggie as she worked. Sure there was the occasional time here and there where Alex couldn’t help but stay late, or intervene in off hours, but that was few and far between.

Another side effect of these changes that there was actually a 52% drop in extra-normal crimes. There is no doubt that a not insignificant cause of this change was as a result of Kara and Alex’s super-powered team-ups which have caused many villains to reevaluate if they want to be in National City, or if they want to take their chances in Metropolis with its one super or Gotham with the bat family.

As it turns out having a golden retriever and a black cat working together in addition to causing some truly traumatising fan fiction that had Alex working hard to find a way to neutralise herself also discouraged people from playing ‘fuck around and find out’ as they didn’t know which would respond . Even Livewire and Banshee had decided it wasn’t worth it, after Livewire electrocuted Alex, for which Kara repaid her by yeeting her into the ocean and Banshee temporarily deafened Kara, for which Alex Super-Screamed back, launching her at Mach 1.2 into a landfill.

This increase in effectiveness from the Super Sisters was also met with some changes that Maggie and her newly acquired best friend Vasquez were doing their best to brow beat the higher ups into enforcing on the DEO. Maggie had argued from day one that the DEO was too heavily militarised in their actions and had somehow managed to get Vasquez on side as well (she offered to help Vasquez with paperwork). The combined pair had then gone to J’onn and highlighted what they saw as problems with how the DEO was reacting and gotten unofficially appointed as the DEO’s new community outreach officers in addition to their other duties. With that in addition to their usual jobs they had commandeered help from Kara, Lena and Alex and started working to change things. When mere weeks after they had started use of force had decreased 15% and collateral damage by 23% people had started to take notice and suddenly the pair were finding themselves gaining more traction from the higher ups as the bean counters and lawyers sung their praises.

This had resulted in some major changes within the DEO, for starters they had lost nearly 6% of all their agents after they started implementing the new policies that required basic things like wearing a body camera and not shooting a suspect without a good reason. For J’onn this had caused quite a few migraines, on the one hand he was glad to see those agents gone, on the other he was already short handed and now he had to wipe dozens of persons memories. However what he didn’t foresee was that they actually started getting Alien and Enhanced recruits and just how easy those agents leaving made it to root out many of the Cadmus spies that were in the DEO’s ranks. By the time that all was said and done they had actually increased their total number of agents with many of the enhanced and alien recruits using this as a path to citizenship similar to how humans joined the military.

The domino effect from here was exactly what you might expect. Certain less evolved persons such as General Lane were ripe and ready to throw a fit, the General even going so far as to bring his soldiers to National City in an attempt to ‘restore order’. This leads to Lucy Lane making a reemergence from the DEO’s desert base with a signed presidential order for the arrest and censure of the General and his staff as well as a formal inquiry into the actions of his branch of the army. Though more impressive was the cooperation that the DEO started to receive not just in National City but throughout the country. With people starting to realise they were no longer going to just disappear never to be seen again into the back of a black van they started to come forward, and certain groups like Roulette’s gang, the Children of Liberty, and even Cadmus found that they could no longer move freely in areas the DEO operated, many choosing to relocate entirely rather than face being shut down or losing profit.

With all this happening at the DEO it is no surprise that things at L-Corp are also heating up. Given the need for new equipment and tools to match their new personnel and policies The DEO had been forced to order massive quantities of armour, weapons, and other gear. Lena for her part being the genius she is had arranged with J’onn to design, manufacture, and maintain everything the DEO would need, to the significant benefit of her company. The only conditions she insisted on were that the DEO would ensure the safety and security of the entire production system, and that they would use the money they were saving from Lena’s generous pricing deal to support the mental health, and well-being of their agents and detainees, two conditions that J’onn was more than happy to agree to.

Many of the original board members weren’t happy when Lena informed them of the particulars of their deal, several going so far as to try and smear Lena to their shareholders and have her removed, either blinded by their bigotry or enraged by the loss of what extra profit they wanted to line their pockets with. However this comes back to bite them when instead of the shareholders being incensed by this they see their projected dividends increase significantly and Lena sees a significant increase in popularity.

With Lena handling the board and the DEO much of the day to day operations of the company fall to Kara acting as COO. Despite what many might think about Kara’s inability to be sneaky, Kara uses the opportunity paired with the extra time granted by Alex’s assistance in handling the Super duties to once again go through things with a fine tooth comb. Personally she will never understand why Lena spends so much time doing paperwork, (she knows her girlfriend could just magic it and be done with it, instead of doing it all by hand) and chooses to utilise her abilities and the new boost Lena’s magic had given her to see the day to day tasks taken care of in a fraction of the time. She instead pours through departmental budgets and memos as well as taking the time to visit each department and have a chat with everyone from the janitorial staff to their lead product marketing staff and research teams.

By the time all is said and done, approximately a month later Kara has plans laid out for Lena to sign off on that should see a 37% increase in profitability and a 27% increase in productivity without causing any of their employees to suffer. That being said however HR and accounting have had a significantly increased amount of paperwork to process thanks to Kara, with her finding several moles for various competitors, an embezzler, and several ‘team leaders’ who were causing unnecessary accidents and injuries through breaking safety protocols and then covering them up. When Lena finally gets the chance to look through Kara’s work and sign off there is barely a moments hesitation before she dies so.

Several months have passed in the new look National City and things are truly starting to look up. The trend that had started by giving Maggie and Vasquez control over certain aspects of the DEO had only improved. More and more alien Americans have been joining up with the DEO realising that the dark days of torture and vivisection are now behind them. Instead there have been myriad different species enrolling to protect their communities, and it has seen a significant decrease in unlawful conduct by the DEO and decreased loss of life with Aliens utilising their unique abilities to assist with everything from Natural disasters to industrial accidents.

The down side to this was the effect that it had on the city government with the mayor and police commissioner both clawing at the control they had in an effort not to lose power to what they saw as the DEO seeking to usurp them. It all came to a head one morning in mid September when an Alien American DEO agent arrested a human shoplifter during their lunch break. Unfortunately during the arrest the shoplifter struggled and managed to fall breaking their arm in the process of fleeing. Rather than calling the DEO medical team the agent had called for an ambulance and a police car. On arrival the police had seen the agent in DEO blacks and drawn their weapons. Even after the agent provided identification to the officers they still refused to holster their weapons and this lead to a tense stand-off in the middle of National City with NCPD officers drawing down on an unarmed Alien American Federal Agent in front of everyone and their cameras.

Things only got worse when Supergirl and Alex had arrived on scene with the NCPD refusing to give up they had no option but to disarm them. This caused an uproar amongst the ultranationalist anti alien factions, an uproar which the mayor and the chief of police were quick to try and exploit, taking to their soapboxes to decry the DEO and Supergirl, to accuse them of bias, of interfering where they didn’t belong, and most importantly of placing the lives of those around them in danger.

Needless to say this didn’t go well, and for days after there was rioting and looting as protesters from both sides took to the streets. On the one hand the DEO made a point to arrest anyone they caught doing the wrong things, while the NCPD was arresting a suspiciously high proportion of pro-alien protesters and allowing a significant percentage of anyone arrested by the DEO to walk claiming ‘fruit of the poisoned tree’. In the end the only things that bring a halt to it are the combined efforts of President Marsden, Cat Grant and Lena Luthor, who manage to levy enough influence and force against the governor to force him to intercede and intercede he does.

Even the governor can not ignore a presidential order especially when it is backed by the full weight of the lower house and the senate (Thank You Cat Grant) and the weight of one of the most powerful businesspeople in the world ( Thank You Lena). This forces him to issue a proclamation ordering the NCPD and the Mayor of National City to stand down or face arrest, this combined with a new bill rushed through congress and written by one Lt. Colonel Lucy Lane authorising the DEO to act similarly to the FBI (Again Thank You Cat Grant) gives the DEO the authority to finally end the stalemate. By the time the evening is over the nation watches as both the Mayor of National City and it’s police chief are arrested and indicted for corruption and failure to adhere to their lawful directives. Meanwhile the DEO with the help of their new and enhanced agents manages to quell the rioting and disperse the vast majority of the crowds without a shot being fired.

The NCPD themselves remain on tenterhooks as does much of the rest of the Nation as the DEO enacts their new authority making arrests and Posting charges where necessary. Many worry that this will be just another extrajudicial use of power by a government agency similar to how the FBI acted during the Cold War. However for many their fears prove unfounded as the DEO under the supervision of persons like Vasquez, Maggie and Kara simply go about their business and are careful not to step outside the authority delegated to them. After all as J’onn and Vasquez have been warning all the new agents, no one survives Kara’s disappointed face and Alex is more than happy to volunteer any rule breakers to be her new sparring partners.

The only ones who have their fears confirmed are those amongst the NCPD and government agencies that have the distinction of having broken their oaths of office, be they cops, lawyers, accountants or librarians. The DEO with their new purview to investigate anti alien corruption and bigotry makes quick work of searching through the records of National City’s government and Agencies, some finding the DEO at their door, but just as many getting a visit from the FBI, ATF, or the NCPD anti corruption task force. Within weeks much of the trash that had found it’s way into National City has been expunged and the pundits across the nation are ageing the benefits of allowing the DEO to do the same elsewhere with many people even calling for referendums within their own states to ask the DEO to do the same.

Following what many had called the ‘unfuckening’ crime had once again dropped in National City, only the most egregious of supervillains choosing to target the City mainly just so they can claim to have done so. Often however these so called supervillains find that before they can even get fully setup they are receiving a knock on the door from one of the DEOs agents or even Kara/Alex themselves with their neighbours often dobbing them in resulting in many a ruined plan. This however had caused a significant downturn in the City’s economy, with many of those who would normally work on repairing the destroyed infrastructure now seeing less work, and subsequently struggling to employ people like they once had. This truly starts to become a problem as the demand for services such as Sal’s Supervillain cleanup Service or Iella’s infrastructure and bridge repair plummets, and it is only after an offhand comment from Kara one evening that the solution starts to come to fruition.

Never one to pass up an opportunity and well aware of how much her City needs it it is Lena whom brings the suggestion to the business community and people of National City. She proposes that now with many of their resources not being devoted to rebuilding things as they were they should expand and improve, and with some oversight from the DEO to keep a cap on some potentially dangerous technology they could integrate suggestions from their ever growing alien community to enhance all their lives. Naturally many of those in the business community hum and haw about this suggestion not willing to risk their bottom line on such a project, a project which in their eyes they will be lucky to ever see returns from. However for every two or three that hum and haw, another actually decides to embrace the ideas and before they know it there are a half a dozen of National City’s biggest investors and businesses ready and willing to provide money and resources for people to enhance their city.

Kara and Alex are two people who at hearing what Lena had done are ecstatic Kara already bouncing around in happiness at the thought of helping her City with something other than her fists and guiding them into avoiding the fate of Krypton. While Alex for her part in enthused of all the new opportunities to do SCIENCE! already she is imagining getting her hands on the designs for everything from flying cars and energy reactors to lightsabers. She even goes as far as to remind Kara that she still owes her a hoverboard to replace her surfboard Kara had destroyed when they were 17 and that now she can do it properly without worrying about the DEO seizing it. Seeing the look on his space daughters faces J’onn chooses discretion as the better part of valour and decides that despite the massive headaches he can already foresee not to object, a sentiment Maggie and Vasquez agree with wholeheartedly as they share a long suffering look at the thought of trying to interrupt Alex’s SCIENCE!
