Summary
The colourful array of staircases serve as an almost humorous contradiction to the darkness that lies hidden deep within the walls of this establishment. Burdened souls left to die express their sorrows through wails, their cold fingers wrap around my throat and make it hard to breathe. I am suffocated with guilt.
I do not think I will ever get used to walking along this staircase. Maybe I won’t have to though, it could be my last time. I do hope that’s not the case.
Footsteps behind me, approaching quick. I ignore them, that is until someone grabs my shoulder with such force I’m nearly thrown off balance.
No surprises here, because it is Sang-woo. “You know something, don’t you? I heard you talking last night, tell me what you know.”
“I think it’d be best if you stopped poking your nose in other people’s business.” I say, turning my head as he sidles up beside me. “It’s considered rude.”

You stare down at your food, losing your appetite at the sight of moist beans and dry rice. The bland, dingy orange tray sat on a messy prison cafeteria table, decorated with dust. You could almost feel a cold, unsettling breeze pinch at your skin.
Other criminals settled in around you, bumping shoulders and inevitably letting an uncomfortable closeness settle. The undeniable hunger growing inside you, humid atmosphere and irritable voices makes everything almost suffocating. You try not to faint as your eyelids pull themselves downward, fluttering themselves to a halt on your lower eyelids.
When you open your eyes, you’re almost able to forget that you’re not in a prison anymore. Instead, you are sitting on a cold, uncomfortable metal seat- damn your ass hurts. A grumble escapes your throat while your eyes adjust to the red lighting, enclosed into a crammed space. You realize the shoulders bumping you are your peers— or rather prisoners forced into the same situation you’ve found yourself in.
This company.. Urbanshade, was it? Sketchy and untrustworthy, but reluctant, you take the offer you couldn’t deny. Freedom in exchange for opening a few doors? Surely it wasn’t as easygoing as they painted it out to be.
