The way Sanji balls his fists and scowls, face reddening with anger, moving to kick at Zoro as the perfect image of grace, body lithe and nimble like that of a dancer. The way that his hair shines in the sunlight, how the freckles from years at sea scatter gently across his skin like glitter, how he matches Zoro one for one on everything. To be so hyper aware of each other of all times that, without even thinking about it, they fight in perfect tandem, the wings of the future pirate king, equals in every way that matters.

Frowning, Zoro raises a calloused hand to his chest. Again, he muses to himself, the weird sensations. He’ll be damned if he talks to Chopper about this (he can handle it on his own), but the elevated heart rate is really unusual. Oh well. It’s probably best if he just ignores it. Exhaustion was beginning to become a constant companion to the poor cook of the Straw Hat Pirates. Sanji hadn't slept in weeks. Even after Wano, the memories of his childhood as the youngest child of the Vinsmokes has begun to haunt him through every night. Constantly woken by the visions and sounds of his family trying to destroy his nakama with beatings and hollow words, there was only so much his broken mind could take.
Unfortunately, Sanji stumbled on one solution that helps. But, no matter what, he's not willing to put himself through it. Cuddling with a crewmate was one thing, being held by Zoro of all people was another. So, deciding that he'd take some time on their next island to sort his head out and find some rest, Sanji was not ready for what was in store for their crew.
A new island only meant trouble and life altering decisions that could mean the end of Sanji's lifelong dream, or the beginning of a brand new adventure.

Nine years after the Strawhat Pirates go their seperate ways, Sanji lives in the East Blue as the Baratie’s head chef. It’s also nine years after that he receives a call from Luffy, hoping to bring the crew together one last time to fulfill Brook’s request. While most parted on good terms, Sanji and Zoro did not.
Reuniting is a disaster waiting to happen. When Sanji arrives in Sabaody, he quickly realizes that some things can’t be left behind.
Like Sanji’s sudden departure from the crew. Or Zoro’s son.
Or the choices that keep drawing them back to each other.

An arrogant, shitty cook, who could have been quite pretty if it hadn’t been for his stupid curly eyebrows. A boy who keeps pushing everyone away, but not enough to stop Zoro from seeing himself in his bright eyes. Perhaps… perhaps the cook isn’t all that bad. And perhaps healing is even more difficult and complex than Zoro had thought.
This piece is a sequel to ‘Found among the strays’, a story that mostly focusses on Zoro&Mihawk and Mihawk/Shanks. If you want to read this without reading an almost 240K fic (+70K sequels, lol) that has no ZoSan elements at all, I wouldn’t blame ya. If that is the case, you can read the notes for a sum up of all relevant information you need to understand what is going on.
