The Andorian rumor gains popularity for a while due to Kirk's apparent immunity to alcohol poisoning despite drinking like a maniac every weekend—Andorians have two livers—but his blood is undeniably red. He gets in a lot of fights, so within a few months of meeting him everybody’s seen him bleeding at least once.
“And here I thought I was special,” Nyota says, the first time she’s out with classmates and he ends up sprawled across their table. “Turns out you’ll take a hit for anybody.”
Kirk grins cross-eyed up at her. He’s missing a tooth. “You’re the only girl for me, baby,” he says, a little slurred, before the other guy hauls him up by the shirt collar and throws him into the jukebox.The Academy years.

They do not… talk about it.
There had been melds, and endless apologies, and immediate forgiveness on both of their parts. But they have not spoken about the particulars of that day. Of Spock, losing his temper, out of his mind with grief, putting his hands on Jim in a violent fashion.
As t’hy’la, it made sense afterwards; Jim challenging him and Spock taking the bait, striking out at the one person in the room who saw the danger of him losing control and promptly ignored it. But the feeling of his fists impacting Jim’s body, of his throat being crushed beneath his firm Vulcan grip, still caused Spock to wake in a cold sweat at night.
“We don’t have to do this one.” Jim says softly. “I know it’s a… sensitive subject.”

Summary
I admit, this was inspired by the song "Crash and Burn" by Savage Garden. The lyrics in particular that struck me were the first lines of "When you feel all alone/And the world has turned its back on you," and the end of the chorus, "If you need to crash/Then crash and burn/You're not alone." I'll leave it to you to figure out where these musical tidbits led me. Summary
Spock’s eyes flicker with something Kirk can’t name, a ghost of a reaction. The slightest curve of his lip appears, a fractional smirk that only Kirk seems to catch. It is gone as quickly as it came, a fleeting shadow of an emotion.
"I rescind my accusation. Cadet Kirk did not subroute the finalization. He simply chose a more efficient methodology. I commend you for your actions, Kirk, and I would like to see you aboard the Enterprise."
A low, collective murmur fills the chamber, a hundred different reactions to Commander Spock’s abrupt and astonishing reversal. James T. Kirk feels the weight of every shocked gaze. He had expected a reprimand, a probation, or maybe even expulsion, but not… this. Not Spock’s commendation. Not Spock’s offer. And certainly not that look. The ghost of a smirk had been so quick, but the subtle, knowing flicker in those dark, almond-shaped eyes that followed was bold, undeniable, and utterly devastating. Kirk feels the heat rush to his cheeks, a blush he cannot control, and he instinctively bites his lower lip to quell the uncharacteristic flutter in his stomach.
