“I saw Reg today.” James hummed. He wanted to chuckle at the rhyme but- it didn’t feel right.
“Oh?” The tone made James want to pull his hair out, but he persisted.
“We talked. Got coffee even.”
“That’s good.” Remus responded.
“He asked me what love feels like.” It was the truth, but he wasn’t sure if Remus could pull himself out of his head long enough to hear his words.
“Oh?” Remus asked after a beat of silence. His voice was drastically different. James could practically see Remus using his lip as a chew toy. “What’d you tell him?”

Lamb squinted at him, bemused. “Cartwright, if I gave a damn about your feelings, I’d have offed myself in solidarity years ago.”
Lech’s voice was wistful as he murmured, “If only.”
Lamb flicked his dead cigarette onto the pavement and nodded to River. “I saw you in there peeking out the window like some kind of pervy uncle.”
“Sure you’d know all about that,” River countered.
“Well, you’d be mistaken there,” the platonic ideal of a pervy uncle sneered back at him. “I’m an only child.”
Despite being on sick leave, River cannot escape Slough House, as he and Sid are forced to take in a hostage on the run for her life, who may or may not be a Russian spy.
Because I love River and Sid and wish they had appeared in book 8. Bad Actors but Sophie de Greer is sent to stay with Sid and River. Occurs earlier in the year than Bad Actors and I’m completely ignoring the existence of the COVID pandemic.
Characterization is a blend of book and show.

A pair of wine-colored eyes was staring down at him, locking onto him as if he were some kind of endangered animal. Seeing him awake, the man retreated his hand from Gen’s face and slowly slid it into the pocket of his white coat. It took Gen a few seconds to process the situation; his eyelids met and parted repeatedly for a while before realizing where he was.
How odd, despite the cool residue on his cheeks left by the scientist’s cold hands, he felt his temperature rise rapidly, especially around the rim of his eyes.
“Are you still dreaming, Mentalist?”

As Gen came home from his work abroad, he wondered if the busy scientist would just let him die of loneliness in their shared apartment.
