He’d idolised superheroes when he was young. There had been more than one Halloween party that he’d shown up to in a cheap Captain America costume. Whenever they’d had the money to, his dad would take him to the museum and he’d stare up at the pictures, listening to all of the stories about how brave Steve Rogers had been, how kind, how gentle, how heroic, and he’d thought to himself 'I want to be like that one day.'
Then, he’d gotten his chance. He’d saved an old man’s life, putting his own in danger to protect someone else.
If Captain America had done that, people would’ve cheered and hugged him and called him the bravest man in the country.
All Matt received were chemical burns, painfully heightened senses and a couple of pitiful flowers by his hospital bed.
