It wasn’t her eyes that gave her away, not the last name, it was how she laughed when she made a mistake and got up again. “Sugawara-Senpai” she said as she got up, her black pigtails sticking to her skin as she scraped off her knees and smoothed her skirt. “One more time! I can do it, I know I can!” God, he knew that smile anywhere.
Sugawara has been an elementary school teacher, and has been distant from his old friends, for several years now. That is until the laugh of the man he loved follows him in the form of his daughter, Sawamura Kaori.

He whipped around, looking for what had hit him. A man in scrubs stood before him, feet stanced awkwardly against the tile floor and hand cradling his face.
“Sorry,” he said, a genuine tone in his voice that Daichi wasn't used to. The building seemed to get brighter, warmer. Daichi couldn’t see his face until he put his hands down to pick up the papers he had dropped. He looked like the moon, soft, bright features and silver hair against rounded eyes.
He put a hand on Daichi’s arm. His fingers were just cold enough to send a jolt up the officer's forearm. “I’m sorry, are you ok?” he asked. The smile put the moon comparisons to shame. It was brighter than the sun.
Daichi looked between him, his name tag, and the receptionist's desk. He realized he had found the missing piece of a puzzle he hadn’t realized he had even been trying to solve. Every day, Sugawara Koushi greeted him at the receptionist's desk with that warm smile. Daichi remembered when he first started working at the nursing home. It was a few months after Daichi’s mother had been admitted.
Daichi knew him as a tender, sweet man who did his best for his mother. Other than that, he knew nothing about him that his name tag didn’t convey.

The cop finishes his inspection to turn to face you, hands on his hips in a pose you could only describe as a dad stance. You nod your head like an obedient citizen but your eyes are glued to the short-sleeved officer uniform, his muscles straining against the edges of the sleeves in a way that makes your tipsy brain implode on itself.
You nearly miss his next words. And his second sigh.
“As much as I'd hate to do this, I have to arrest you.”
THAT sobers you up real fast.
