But his feet refused to move. A flicker of memory stopped him - of one night of the past summer, at the barricade - that night something cracked within him, though he still couldn’t name it. Now, standing over the same man, he felt the fissure widen.
It was infuriating how the past refused to stay buried.

After the June rebellion, Javert makes an attempt to return to his normal life. Fate has other plans.

Javert awakes in an odd room, convinced he has passed. However, the soft clothes on his back, the comfortable weight of the blanket upon him, and the blinding gold of the light before him tells him otherwise.
"He realized quickly he was neatly tucked in a bed, wearing a soft foreign white blouse, and his hair neatly brushed and tied. What sick mind had done this to him? He was undeserving of anything less than a cruel death, so why was he being granted a peaceful awakening?"

This is like vaguely bookverse with musical quotes.
So basically, this started out as a "what if Marius actually saved Eponine from the barricade during Eponine's Errand" fic........and then spiraled into way longer than I thought it would be.
Also tw Gavroche dies and Eponine is very affected - oh and Eponine has abusive parents too. There's no scenes with them (yet?) but they're mentioned a lot.
Yeah, I've really fucked things up for Eponine.
Also I have been in a Les Mis cast and several of the characters in this fic are based off people from my cast.
On a happier note, Cosette and Eponine are very cute, and Cosette has a dog.
There's also a bunch of swearing in it. (Not as much as my wicked fanfic which I self-destructed because they almost fucked and I don't want to hand that to my irl friends though)

What if Javert had jumped into the water after Jean Valjean at the hospital? Only to remember right before he hit the surface the in his refusal to let Valjean escape again, he completely neglected the fact that he can’t swim. He begins to slip under the water, refusing to make a sound or cry for help, when he feels a strong arm grab him. He loses conciousness as he’s being dragged through the water. Later in the hospital, Jean Valjean long gone from Montreuil-sur-Mer, Javert is told that Monsieur Le Maire had saved his life that night. Javert can do nothing by lay there and accept it as his world is turned on its axis (a whole 9 years early). The real question? What will he do when he gets out of the hospital?

Jean Valjean thinks that now that Cosette has fallen in love, there is no room for him in her heart.
So when Javert, lost and desperate, kisses Valjean, it opens a different path for them both.
