Chapter Text
Branch groaned as his eyes burned and head pounded as he slowly sat up. He's in a hospital bed to his horror.
Right the gate had malfunctioned. He had been on the bridge with Lownote and the sister's. They were talking and explaining multiverse travel when one of them suddenly opened. However it was unstable and started to collapse causing some kind of rift sucking whatever it could into it…
Branch fell in.
He tore off the blanket and quickly started to check over himself. Two blue legs with all of his toes accounted for. His hands and arms were present and he didn't have any bandages on his body looking down the hospital gown.
He heard the chime of the door and sat up relived.
“Lownote! Thank God what happened….?” Branch trailed off uncertain backing up.
What the hell was going on. Why on earth did Lownote get a sleeve of tattoos on his arm. It was pretty, it was funky mural of planets and stars. However that wasn't there ever before and he shouldn't have been unconscious for the time that would have taken.
“You know me?” They asked stunned in disbelief, blinking.
Branch wanted to go back to bed and never wake up as he's given a tablet. It was an explanation of what was going on. He was consequently in a whole new universe after he was sucked by the gate. These things of course have happened before. After all the funk trolls made the gates for a reason but under use of strict rules. It can cause quite an array of problems and complications if done or used irresponsibly.
On the bright side according to the informational video he would be fine. They had already taken blood and scanned him for partials. Using both they could locate his correct universe and timeline in it as it's embedded in every cell of his body as is everything living thing there as well. However while they have already located and identified the universe traveling to it may prove more difficult. In order for universal travel both gates must be functional. There were already on the fritz and likely after being forced open so was the gate for his world.
Until then he will automatically be under funck care. He'd also have to be given a shot every week for a month to make sure his body remains stable.
“Wait …. What does it mean by that? What happens without the shot?” Branch asked as Lownote started to prep his arm.
“Well… think of the universe as one body. Your presence is like a foreign bacteria inside of it. To prevent itself from getting sick its immune system will try to kill or merge you in some way as part of itself.” Lownote explained sticking his patient with the needle.
He's taking this surprisingly well. He seems to be understanding and grasping what's going on ok enough. They don't have to worry about him running into his duplicate. Those are typically a hit or miss. They can't find anything about ‘Branch’ here.
He apparently knew him seemingly almost personally. Sure Lownote Jones have always been a favorite amongst trolls. Everyone perls up hearing him speak or turn towards him. But he seemed relieved and there was a spark until he had seen his arm. He kept catching them sneaking a glance at it however.
“...Your's had different ink?” He asked curiously trying to lighten some of the mood.
“None at all actually… so…do I have to go through the gate? I mean it's not the first time I've moved dimensions. Hell I've been to at least twelve.” Branch asked, setting the tablet down.
Seeing the doctor's expression he went on to elaborate. How not once, twice but a whole dozen of times he's traveled through universes and wormholes of time and space by natural holes or by the power of some bullshit. And to top it off described multiple visits of a likely fugitive with technology that was made illegal across the multiverse to hand out. He had done all this multiple times and multiple times sometimes in a day. Regardless of the possible dangers of actively doing any of that and none with proper protection or notice.
Branch hushed seeing the doctor looking at him with a…. Concerning face. The one you never wanna see on a doctor as a patient. The one that meant you fucked up in some way. Possibly royally.
“No. No you absolutely cannot do that why on earth would any troll for hair sake ever jump-?!” Lownote thought he was about to have a stroke at the absurdness.
Branch learned regardless of his typical adventures he could not do that. This world here didn't have all the holes or ripples at such easy access as Lownote put it. Not to mention after the 45 minute rant seemed that this universe had consequences about using those.
Not to mention after double checking and helping Lownote look for him in the troll database he discovered one very crucial change. He was not in this universe. He didn't exist simply put, not even as a thought.
Now it feels like one of those cheesy books he used to read. What would happen if you didn't exist? One thing immediately came to mind to him however..
He asked timidly to look up a name on the computer. This new universe version of Blues had ribbons attached to the stars in her hair. Looked kinda like shooting stars now that he realized it. She also had a ton of bracelets with… perhaps subtle eye shadow. He's rather surprised by that in all honesty. Aside from his… non existence nothing seemed to change too much in his friends aside some features in appearance.
“Here she is. Why did you wanna look her up?” Rhythm asked curiously.
She herself had more jewelry however instead of just gold he could spot some space pearls. Her hair was also longer and she wore the wrap around her head differently.
“Well….back home she's my grandmother.” Branch chuckled nervously coming to look.
His heart skipped a big to see her face. She's aged more than her portraits at home. Her eyes have dimmed just a tad as well..
But his heart stopped seeing that she was still alive…
Chapter Text
Branch was at a loss for words as he sat in a small quarters. A holding housing unit in the ship courtesy of the situation that had presented itself. Lownote wanted him to stay here until they could get the gates open. He couldn't tell if that made him feel any better or worse.
Grandma was alive in this world and he's torn between wanting to hide in shame or go beg to see her. He had killed his grandmother with his carelessness as a child. She sacrificed herself for him and he has to see her be eaten. He had no right in his mind to see her. But he wanted to with all his heart. He wanted to give her a hug and listen to her voice. He wanted to play cards and bake and eat cookies with Grandma. He wanted to talk and tell her all the stories of him growing up. He wanted to be her sugar plum again at least even for a few minutes.
He was curled up on the couch of the small space. The large white sweater given to him by the hospital to replace his vest and shorts was comfy and came to his knees and the sleeves swallowed his arms. He wasn't complaining though as it was rather comfy and warm.
Something happened to his shorts but they're cleaning his vest. Some kinda machine was also making him clothes based on his measurements and preferences. He sat up when he heard a chime. Confused, he sat up before the door opened to reveal the last three trolls he ever expected to see.
Floyd, Clay and Poppy herself were at his door.
The first thing his eyes land on was the giant fuckin scar on Poppy's face and her pink color was muted. Clay and Floyd weren't better off looking seemingly so tired themselves. All three were surprised when the blue stranger practically jumped and shrieked seeing them. He seemed almost horrified as he asked what the hell happened to them.
Lownote quickly came to meditate kicking himself for the short-sightedness. Branch admitted straight up Rosiepuff was his grandmother. Obviously that goes without saying Floyd and Clay were his brothers in another universe.
“Wait so there's a whole universe where… we had another brother?” Clay asked for clarification rather skeptical.
He had taken a few steps as ‘Branch’ was examining Floyd's face. He was especially worried about the torn ear from when he lost his earring. He had done the same asking what had happened to Poppy but she wasn't answering.
Floyd was really the only one engaging with them. As much as they didn't wanna believe it or was undeniable. The eyes, the color, those big expressive ears, he looked just like grandpa. He himself was littered in scars but seemed bewildered they were.
Hearing Clay he had dug through their hair before taking out some Polaroid photos. He's thankful he borrowed some from John. Early childhood photos of him as baby B in their pod beside them all.
Clay studied them in disbelief. These were genuine photos and hard proof.
“Awww you had a little perm!” Poppy chuckled, breaking from her own shock.
Branch chuckled before stepping back and sitting down. He had quite some questions and a …. sinking feeling.
Since he didn't exist Floyd stayed behind with Grandma in the tree. With Grandma alive she made sure she got both her grandsons out the tunnels that final trollstice. Floyd is still taking care of Rosie to this day. Clay continued his academic studies and now is Queen Viva's advisor, Tax and financial advisor as well as a college math professor.
Poppy is a princess obviously, she and her boyfriend Creek are currently pop troll ambassadors and Viva's advisors as well.
Branch was taken by surprise by what she said. Had he heard that right? Creek and Poppy were dating in this universe?!
“But what about his betrayal? And the Bergen's?!” Branch asked in a mix of horror and disbelief.
“What are you talking about..?” Poppy asked with a worried expression that shook him.
This world they never made peace with the Bergen's. It made sense when he thought of it. Viva had more experience firsthand with them and a stronger sense of fear too. Of course this bias and judgement would make sure she and her Kingdom was safe. The coronation party that led to the rediscovery would have also never had happened…
The village had more cover, defensive measures, and as he come to learn guards.
Actual guards and protective force with one that had actually come to double check on the three. Branch started in shock at the glittery troll with armor and a full long spear.
Boom was a soilder in this time line. His friend and band mate was a whole ass full fledged soilder. Boom looked at him for awhile seemingly studying him. When he walked away the thoughts started to swarm into his head…
His absence changed already a lot more things than he thought. And his heart and head was struggling to process or grapple it all. It was like dominoes falling but taking a sudden wrong turn somewhere. He couldn't tell for better or for worst or how he felt about this.
Lownote put a hand on his shoulder as they were wrapping up.
Essentially Branch would be allowed into Pop trolls village. However he must be under strict rules and regulations. They didn't wanna take the chance he could be out for trouble.
He nodded hesitantly not sure how he felt about that. He let Lownote slide on a thin mostly plastic bracelet onto him. It had a tracker embedded in it as well as something to track his pulse and blood levels.
It would only be for the short time he's here right…?
Chapter Text
Branch was sitting alone in the unit again after his first night. It's strange and quiet much like his bunker. But the white lights and sharp corners feel too harsh. They feel too empty and far too cold and foreign to him. It was a hard time to fall asleep despite the warm bed. It felt wrong and weird to stay there.
It was so so much quieter too.
Too quiet. The peaceful silence in his bunker had clocks, buzzes and creaks. Warm yellow lights that sometimes would flicker and the beep of the one fire alarm he keeps forgetting to get batteries for. His furniture would sometimes make a squeak or sound as you sat down.
It's quiet and lonely in this borrowed room.
He wanted to sing even if he'd just be listening to himself. But what would he sing? He was torn really with his emotions as he sat up and thought….
The first he had in mind had been True Colors. But he stopped himself feeling a twist in his stomach. No. No, that felt too special to sing without Poppy. To sing any of Brozone’s songs feels worse…
He remembers the last time he sang anything that delved too far into sadness. He didn't think his heart could take it or if he could stop once it started to pour from him. He remembers a song he had in the works…
(Mathew Mole -Take Yours and I'll Take Mine-)
“Take yours and I'll take mine
On the right-hand side
I'll rest and you'll find
That you take rest in wine”
Lownote perked up hearing the voice over the monitor on Branch's wrist. Were they singing? What were they singing about?
“So take these words
And make them right
So one day you and I
Will write our names in the sky
We'll confide
And I'll find mine on the right of your side
And I'll find mine on the right of your side
If I throw away my fear and pride to set things right~~~”
The doctor sat up curious, accidentally hitting a button. Listening closely as he heard Branch's voice carry. The ship listened with growing awe as it was broadcasted over the speakers. All of Trollstopia could hear it now.
“Then I'll find mine on the right of your side
And brothers and sisters
Fill these cups with life
Please forgive them
'Cause they know not their lives
So take these words
And make them right
So one day you and I
Will write our names
In the sky
We'll confide
And I'll find mine on the right of your side
And I'll find mine on the right of your side
If I throw away my fear and pride to set things right
Then I'll find mine on the right of your side”
Viva felt a tear roll down her cheek as she listened. She started blankly into the heavens as something within her resonated with the words. Her father stood beside her feeling it too as Floyd's heart both began to ache and yearn. They didn't know why or what but it was all the same.
You could hear the love and want bursting from the words. Unwavering and unconditionally from the heart..
“And I'll find mine on the right of your side
And I'll find mine on the right of your side
If I throw away my fear and pride to set things right
Then I'll find mine on the right of your side~”
Branch finished up his song softly feeling a bit better as if a weight fell from him. He smiled reassuring himself that he'll find his way home. He had just gotten his family back and Poppy and all their friends were waiting. He found trolls that made every crazy adventure worth it. They had inspired him to do so much better and be better after all.
He wasn't gonna lose them.
With newfound determination and reassurance he started to think. The portal had opened abruptly and forcefully. What had caused it to open and what exactly had it damaged? Maybe when Lownote came he could ask if he'd let him see and help!
He sat eagerly on the couch waiting for the doctor. He didn't know it would be a minute as Lownote needed a moment to process his song. He had no idea they had all heard him. And how they were all wanting to hear him sing again…
Chapter Text
Branch did something he probably really shouldn't have. He got tired of waiting for Lownote to come. And much to his own surprise and joy he actually could leave his room as it was not locked.
He then felt incredibly stupid after seeing his wrist. He was given permission literally yesterday in return to wearing the monitor. Right. Whatever. He presses on remembering and knowing the layout quite well. He beamed himself down into Trollstopia and after checking his reflection got to moving. He went for a nice white top and green overalls that stopped at his knees. He wanted to blend in a bit better after all while he was here. He quickly on foot made it to techno lagoon. He peeked around the corner curious. He could see a few of them hanging about the lagoons' surface and waters edge.
He noticed he didn't see any of the slides, floating decor or lots of enrichment for them. He also noticed oddly enough a lot of them had more piercings or had some slight signs of Rock. Arm bands, collars, and some tattoos although still mostly with that techno touch.
It seemed quieter around here as well and he noticed an odd tension between them and passing patrolling guards. What had happened? He has turned around to meet with Synth. Seeing this version of his friend sent shivers down his spine. He looked tired and so angry Branch almost didn't recognize him. His purple wasn't as vibrant and he wore a black leather vest.
“What do you think you're doing?” It had come pointed and hostile.
Branch couldn't recognize them with how he bared his fangs or the way his ear fins raised defensively. And he did what he thought was best. He bolted straight out of there. He hid away behind some rocks and bushes trying to process the change. What could have happened?! Why was the sweet Synth so …..sour?
The rock trolls clearly had an influence over the techno trolls. But he can only guess it was from the Rock takeover. He'd need to ask Poppy and his brothers more thoroughly. When he had brought up the Bergen's it didn't go too far. However they seemed concerned and left shortly afterwards.
He noticed more guards and followed them back to troll village.
He was relieved to see nothing too big had changed. It was odd looking at the village of this universe. He took out the scrap book he and his Poppy had started to make together. He had taken photos of some random places. Scenic views of the proud and happy village of trolls. Side by side comparisons had him spinning. Most homes now were more fortified. Most with wooden spikes or protective netting along the outside. Some even with elements to blend in. He noticed some new houses inside the tree itself as well or even openings in the ground that likely lead to underground areas too.
More versatile architecture based around fortification and or camouflage. Even just stalls at the open market were designed to look like just piles of leaves from above or hidden in shadows of tall flowers. So much and so little had changed at the same time.
He was walking a bit taking in the new sights and….somewhat old ones. Taking glimpses and peaks at various scenes.
He saw his friends and bandmates together through a bar window. They were all having a drink off patrol laughing together. He smiled relieved seeing they were still all together. Though with scars and changed looks he could still see the warmth in their eyes and the ease in each other's presence.
He saw Holly playing horseshoes with Gust. For the most part she seemed unchanged and after meeting Synth that was more than a relief than he thought possible.
He didn't see any sign of Val or Dante much to his concern. Holly and Val were pretty inseparable. Once more as he turned around he bumped straight into someone.
He dropped his scrapbook apologizing before panicking when a strong wind came out of nowhere and blew the loose pages and pictures away. Creek hurriedly tried to grab the photos, jumping and trying to snatch them. He was surprised to see one of the photos was a photo of himself. Or atleast what he assumed to be. Branch himself was taken aback when he had realized it was in fact Creek in front of him.
His Creek was as skinny as a toothpick and roughly the same size as him. He had what he called a ‘zen’ and ‘calm’ aura. Truthfully he was just a pretentious asshole masking his vibe.
This Creek was taller than him with a scar on his cheek. His hair was down and braided probably by Viva. He had a feather pendant, a long vest and a left arm full of bracelets. He also wasn't a toothpick.
Branch didn't know how he should feel about this. Let alone if he should feel anything or be reactive to it.
“...so…. You're that otherworlder Poppy mentioned?” Creek chuckled nervously, handing the strange man the photos.
Branch nodded quickly, putting them away and looking for the rest. Scanning the area for the rest as well as the cause of the sudden wind. That was too hard and far too sudden to have been naturally caused. Had it been some kind of monster?! No he's seen the fortification done would prevent any he's thinking of.
“C'mon. Let's get you to Viva. She's got some questions for you.” Creek said gently unsure how'd they respond.
Gently with a hand to their back he guided them towards the tree.
Chapter Text
Branch walked quietly by Creek. He let the guru lead him calmly with a hand on his back.
“So. That singing earlier. Was that you?” Creek asked with a curious and teasing tone.
Branch had at first been confused. However to his shock and embarrassed horror Creek Some a lyric from his song earlier. Creek only laughed as Branch's ears wiggled as he blushed. Hiding his face in his paws now learning everyone heard him sing about wanting to go home.
He was surprised however to see a group of trolls gathered up ahead. They were all crowding around a troll. Was Lownote out today? Was that why he didn't see him this morning?
It was much worse to his horror.
Bruce - Or well Spruce in this case was laughing as he made his way through his crowd of admirers. Branch couldn't believe this was his brother. Any sign of that jolly happy fatherly soul was gone. This version of his brother was taller, had never missed a day at the gym and had an air around him. It felt suffocating just watching him stroll right on up to him.
“So you must be the new arrival Floyd's been talking about.” The man cocked his head to the side with a raised brow.
He looked flawlessly like a troll from a movie screen. Long vibrant wavy purple hair following him. The open white button up revealing the strong body he had seemingly been blessed with. Strong and beautiful fragrant cologne only added to the strange aura. The dramatic flair and confidence seemed to have the fans hooked too. Branch was stunned to silence as Creek introduced the two. The star and the mystery troll had everyone's eyes on them. The resemblance was odd and yet so uncanny.
“Spruce got daddy~ energy but Branch got baby girl energy.” Satin put blunty from a distance with Poppy.
Chenille nodded in agreement as their friend sputtered from the blunt statement. As Satin said they both got strong appeal just in opposite directions.
Branch was just trying to wrap his head around what his brother became as Spruce just leads them up into the tree. Blowing kisses bye to his fans with a hand on Branch's shoulder. He had said something but he wasn't really listening seeing Floyd and Clay. In-between them an elderly woman was sitting in a chair.
Grandma Rosiepuff herself in the flesh had Branch spinning. She was holding a deck of cards idly unaware to his internal dispair. His alternate brothers were as well as Spruce scoffed.
“And I see someone's late again.” Spruce muttered almost venomously.
The charming heartthrob tone had shifted and dropped completely. Clay rolled his eyes as Floyd tiredly just checked on Rosie. John wasn't here. Is that who Spruce had been referring to? Where was the eldest brother.
He had been so in shock he jumped in surprise when there was a prick to his finger.
“Whoops. Sorry just needed a sample.” Spruce chuckled holding a device.
“A DNA test..?” Branch cocked his head to the side confused.
He put his pricked finger into his mouth as Spruce nodded. He was surprised but partially relieved that they recognized the small funk device. It made DNA testing simple and fast by just pricking two fingers on each end. He wanted to be sure after all.
Sure enough they were 100% real blood related brother's.
Branch took his hand out of his mouth when Creek nudged him. He was surprised when a voice cleared the air and gathered their attention. Viva smiled nervously as she looked at Branch.
“It's good to meet you Branch.. if you don't mind I think we all have questions for you.” Viva said calmly taking a seat and gesturing he do the same.
So as it turned out it wasn't just Floyd and Clay Grandma made sure to get that final trollstice. That very concert that had haunted Branch for years still occured. However the four brothers had hit the perfect family harmony without him. However despite the big success for whatever reason the band of brothers still split. Well in frank terms.
They were essentially grounded that night when they came home screaming and yelling. Some argue the band was still just grounded.
They never left home but they all went on separate paths.
Viva was shocked as she listened to Branch explain in more depth about the Bergen's. How a reckless party drew in the chef themself to its very location. His Creek betrayed the entire tribe to the very end of making peace.
It sounded absolutely like ludicrous. A wild dream even. They even had changed the anthem at one point.
Floyd was on the edge of his seat baffled then hearing about how the Bergen's helped them. Specifically how they helped them rescue Floyd himself or atleast his counterpart. Velvet and Veneer being soul sucking succubi for his talent.
“But I actually have some questions too. What happened to techno lagoon? What of the Rock Apocalypse?” Branch asked curiously.
“What of the lagoon?” Synth hissed appearing from the hall with Val.
He wasn't pleased to see the potential creep that had been spying on the lagoon. Val shared a similar testament especially seeing how they did a double take.
Was Val wearing punk rave wear and make up? It was a lot different than her typical scene punk rocker vibe.
So it wasn't just a Rock influence on the Techno trolls it must be a mutual thing. But why?
Chapter Text
So the World Tour Take Over kinda .. kinda dissolved? There was no pop troll string to take much to Branch’s surprise.
Because there has been no string and with Viva's rule it had come to a standstill. With the whole forest naturally against Barb and the efforts of the army it paid off. Barb couldn't maintain her effort and realized soon as well it just wouldn't be feasible to rule over all the trolls as she thought. Not to mention it had dragged out for so long because she and the others also refused to believe they had just ‘lost’ the string.
Branch was confused about that himself. The only difference was supposedly he had not existed. Why on earth would that have affected the string's whereabouts?
He came to learn the reason for the strange closeness between the rockers and the techno trolls. He never dug out the bunker and in turn the hot springs. Without the warmth of the hot springs lots of techno trolls struggle to get minerals or any momentum they need going.
Same goes for the Val and the rock trolls. Branch never tapped into any magma or lava for Rock hollow. Without any magma or lava flow Rock trolls don't have a lot of warmth they are accustomed to. Not to mention lots used for a lot of cultural activities and dishes.
On top of that both groups were kinda left in bad spots to build lives here in Trollstopia. They weren't given much help and were glossed over by most trolls. There was a strong prejudice against rock trolls. Most feel guilty about the war and fear backing out is a defeat or an act against the fragile peace. Since they were both struggling the two tribes kinda clicked and kept close tabs on each other.
It made sense but it had Branch incredibly disturbed.
He knew exactly where both channels needed to be and hurried their explaining vaguely where he was heading, Viva hog on his heels confused.
Demo scratched his neck confused jumping a bit. He was surprised to see a small pop troll run by him to be followed up with by the pop queen herself.
And before he knew it there was lava in Rock Hollow. Val herself was stunned and didn't know what exactly to say after a new ventilation system had been installed. It was warming up already and contained pools of magma were carefully placed about. Over some vents he even installed hot rocks. Flat large rocks that you could lay or sit on for warmth as magma runs underneath it.
He had dug fast and quickly and certainly knew what he was doing.
Synth was in a similar state of shock when a hot spring was uncovered and connected quickly to the lagoon.
Warm waters from underwater volcanic vents flowed into the lagoon. But it was the strongest from inside the underwater cavern after it had been cleared and shipped to its inhabitants' needs. Laguna had checked everything and indeed it checked all the boxes. Running hot and warm waters, that fed and circulated into the lagoon as with easy access. Smooth stone walls, floors, with steps and ladders, even water filters courtesy from the funk ship.
Branch was wiping his brow of sweat with a towel. His hair a wild mess of debris from when he had used it endlessly throughout the entire process.
“That oughta do it! I know I'm gonna leave soon but I couldn't leave you guys hanging like that!” Branch chirped, removing soot and clay off his face.
Viva was baffled how he did all that in four hours. Setting up an underground tunnel system to manage and watch the lava pressure as well as the underwater reservoir that fed the hot springs.
“I burrowed down into a bunker for 20 years! I know a thing or two about what's under us!” Branch explained realizing that it must be very strange for them.
“....Hey um…Branch we have ... .a small problem that we need to discuss with you.” Lownote cleared his throat after looking over a chart.
After careful revision about universal travel and Branch's story they came across something. Branch clearly was very vital in his universe's development. They share the same multiverse meaning everything behaves and follows a set of rules or patterns. Now. There's a good chance that this was a natural rare occurrence of Branch just genuinely not being born in this universe….or….
“... you're saying…. there's a possibility…” Branch stumbled on the words being dropped on him.
“....that the accident possibly erased you from this timeline and…. Until we know if it's true or not ….. it's also possible it…erased your own.” Lownote explained gently not wanting to upset him.
The odds are in his favor as things that hadn't related to him changed. After all, Branch's presence or lack thereof didn't affect him having a tattoo or not. His presence didn't affect the string's whereabouts either.
However, a clear sign of fear washed over his face. And soon so did pitiful tears started to as well as his grip on the towel tighten. Viva gave him a hug as he froze in silent horror crying in disbelief. He hadn't made a sound but he looked ready to collapse as he was then taken back to the ship…
He was placed in his room to shower after the work he put in. Lownote sat down as Viva was calling for all the ambassadors to gather. They needed a plan just in case Branch has to stay with them for a long time… ..
Chapter Text
Branch was curled into himself clinging to a pillow on the bed. He had cried his eyes dry alone. It's a lot to process in a short amount of time.
His home may not be waiting for him when they get the gate to open and function properly again. He may have faded from their memory and existence just like he had here. Lownote says it's not set in stone or that they're certain but just that it was a strong possibility.
But then the heavy weight of realizations fell on top of him. Grandma was alive, she was alive and his brothers were together. He was at fault for them failing the perfect family harmony. And while sure everything seems so tense now they were still together. Clay and Viva never had to go through 20 years of hell in the mini golf course. But Spruce never became Bruce. And Floyd while never getting kidnapped now looks so tired…
He never made his bunker, and that left Synth and Val and all their friends suffer.
Why does he feel bad for shit he didn't even cause?! His head hurts from the back and forth, his heart hurts just from weighing whether or not everyone was better off without him! To make it worse his skin darken in shade again.. When the door to the bedroom opened he was surprised to see two faces.
“Hey sugar….if you don't mind me calling you that… came to check on you.” Holly said softly Dante coming to join.
After the initial shock of knowing them both by name already the three gathered round. Branch noticed Holly had brought something with her. However she seemed hesitant before she silently scooped him up and laid down with him. He was stunned and surprised before his eyes started to water again.
He cried quietly curling up and falling asleep on the familiar hold. Dante had found a picture of the two just as word reached classical crest.
After finding Holly to share the find with her they overheard Val and Synth talking. So they came to see him themselves and comfort the poor thing. Dante came down and gently pet the strange troll holding the photo. It was a photo taken between Holly and this fellow in another life. They had been asleep presumably at a sleepover. But Branch curled up impossibly small and sweet just like so in Holly arms.
Poppy wasn't far behind them with Clay in tow. If Branch, even if it wasn't certain yet, winds up staying long term Clay wanted to extend an invite. Branch was their brother though maybe from another life.
Floyd's been wanting more help with Grandma so he can focus on his duties as an ambassador. And someone can keep an eye on JD and his shenanigans….
To speak of the devil he could hear that horn blowing now.
Branch was startled awake hearing it blare. He Holly, Clay, Poppy and Dante hurried out to the sound.
“STOP BLARING THAT FUCKING HORN YOU SORRY PIECE OF-” Lownote yelled at the top of his lungs with the sisters not to far behind.
“WHAT? Sorry, I can't hear you!” Johnny chuckled as he stepped away from Rhonda.
The ship automatically alerts them to anyone. The horn is unnecessary and just obnoxious! They've been over it over and over again with the man.
“John!” Clay groaned embarrassed as he stepped out from the beam.
John chuckled moving past him to Branch. Branch had hardly any time to react when they grabbed his face.
“Oh my goodness it's like looking into the past! You look exactly like Grandpa Trunks! Ooo you even got his kitten fangs!!” John cooed before yelping.
Branch bit his fingers after he had stuck them in his mouth. He grimmanced a bit in guilty and the faint taste of… what was that. He blew his tongue at the taste in disgust as John chuckled.
“Whoops sorry bud! Magic dust. Surprisingly bitter huh?” John whipped his hands on his pants.
“So you are this bad with everyone?” Chaz chuckled coming down from above.
Branch was surprised yet kinda glad one of the bounty hunters appeared. They were always more grounded though sometimes dramatic. Chaz especially when though he had attempted to take over Trollstopia. Twice.
He's had some good moments with Chaz back at his home world….
“So little one have you met me? And more importantly can you prove it?” Chaz purred with a gentle touch to Branch's chin.
“Yes. You're fo-” Branch didn't get to finish as Chaz clamped a hand over his mouth.
The vain man has always kept a tight lid on how old he is. So it surprised him when this new fellow knew it.
“No need to spill such sensitive information!” Chaz chuckled nervously, petting his head.
Branch smiled smugly, giggling as Clay was left baffled. Clay was not quiet about not liking or approving of his eldest brother's choice in friends. Chaz being his number one example and least favorite.
However with no time to spare John hoisted Branch up and carried him off.

“Welcome to the workshop!” John cheered, placing Branch down.
Branch was still trying to wrap his head around everything. John Dory the former leader of Brozone and the eldest son of the family has…a magic workshop?
He guesses this makes some kinda sense about it. He never asked exactly how John ever learned about the ‘Perfect Family Harmony’. He didn't stop there in this timeline seemingly having diver straight into anything and everything magic. Various kinds of animals or bugs in small enclosures. Books and papers of writing and speculations scattered about. The walls had mounted monster fangs and heads as well as various artifacts.
“Sit right here ‘Branch’ if you don't mind.” John chuckled, patting a stool.
“I'm good…” Branch said quietly looking up and down.
The chair was surrounded by ominous papers and red strings and photos. Specifically a bunch of photos of grandpa Trunks. It was short of a shrine to the man.
He didn't exactly like how John had said his name either. It was like he hadn't really believed that was his name. Instant hands grabbed his shoulders and picked him up.
“Nonsense now, no need to be afraid of anything!” John plopped him into the stool.
Chaz landed softly beside him seeing how tense and confused the smaller troll was.
“He thinks you are Trunks.” Chaz said plainly, eyeing a photo of the troll in question.
“....really?” Branch was unable to hide his sarcasm.
He'd have to be an idiot not to realize that by now. But what exactly was John planning to do with that belief? He didn't know much about Grandpa Trunks; he died young at 27 Branch was 25.
“Hold this if you don't mind.” John gave Branch a crystal.
Branch took it gingerly, holding it away from him. What was this supposed to do? What was he given this? What was that smile for?
John chuckled seeing him move the crystal away. Instead redirecting it to his forehead.
He shone a flashlight into the crystal and tossed some purple dust into his face. With a sneeze he took the crystal from him.
He moved some papers and started digging around. Clay finally returned with Spruce who looked as impatient as he had when they had gathered with Viva.
“John, what are you doing now?!” the brother's exclaimed exasperated as Chaz nudged Branch off the stool.
Branch took a closer look upon some of the papers. He saw various sketches and scribbled writing. He went white however when he started to actually read and search the works…
“YOU'RE TRYING TO RESURRECT HIM?!” Branch exclaimed getting everyone to jump.
“It's a project to help pass the time, yes.” John said with a sigh as he grumbled disappointed.
The crystal gleamed a nice blueish purple color rather than the green color his pop pop has done before. So Branch truly was Branch and not his grandfather Trunks. So he has another brother that's cool. He places the crystal into a gold brass machine.
Clay grumbled and glared at John and the mess.
“C'mon. Let's get you up stairs to Grandma and Floyd. It's filthy down here.” Clay said that last part pointedly at John.
Branch let him pull him up and away Holly and Poppy upstairs too. Spruce rubbed his temples pissed off to high hell. Chaz came to John who had no care in the world as he powered on his machine.
So Branch wasn't grandpa, but his crystal held a copy of their memories and soul. Almost like a magical fingerprint he was sending it through the machine to peer through Branch. What moments shaped him into who he currently is can be seen at a glance.
Bruce would have argued with him if he wasn't curious or had his own speculations. Chaz came closer as well wanting to see on the machine's screen.
Branch and Holly were making dinner as Floyd was tending to grandma….her memory had been fading. And with it so has her health. She's been fussy about taking her medicine or understanding why he had to give them to her. Branch was making small talk with Holly asking about where Dante had gone.
“He left a while ago. He and the classical trolls here don't feel safe outside of Classical Crest really. And if not, people are afraid of the classical trolls.” Holly explained with a sigh as she got the biscuits out of the oven.
Branch almost laughed. While yes dramatic and rather emotional at time the classical trolls valued reason, patience and order. He couldn't think of them as anything violent or aggressive.
Holly gave him a news article that sobered him up quick…
“All of that…from such small trolls?” Branch read over the injuries and pailed.
They stay in flocks of group and attack viciously together. Most now being armed or carrying empty glass bottles. Old jewelry that had compartments for poisons or even hat pins have came back into fashion. He remembers what Minuet had told him. Hat pins could be as long as small swords or daggers. While thin they were sturdy to keep hair, and hats in place from strong winds. And with their history of revolutionary poisons it made his stomach turn.
Holly shit Holly was not joking about this.
Holly noticed meanwhile that Bruce and John had similar looks of horrifying realizations as they came up for dinner.
Chapter Text
Techno lagoon is lively now with the water springs. Everyone has been feeling much better and relaxed with the warm waters and playful energy. Curious chatter about the strange new pop troll that brought them the springs came about. Mentions of his name fluttered in the air. It took a more serious and interesting turn when the rumors and photos came.
Synth had confiscated yet a fourth photo to Val's amusement. It was getting ridiculous really as now they were searching for more or for a source. Speculations of how it happened and if it could happen now.
Val took a peak at the new photo when he attempted to put it in his pocket. Synth rolled his eyes when she made a coo holding it up.
“Now that ain't a half bad photo.” Val teased as he scoffed embarrassed.
Synth's counterpart was reminiscent of himself when he first came to Trollstopia. One with soft eyes and a loving smile for a blue pop troll. Branch was dating his counterpart.
Which was made unfortunately obvious in most the photos.
This one had Branch sitting on a pool's edge with his copy in between his legs and hands around his waist. There was a sparkle in his copy's eyes that was returned by Branch's. The photo had been taken by a friend clearly as they were clearly unaware. Date and time written on the back with the story of the photo.
This happened during a heatwave in the summer so they were chilling together with a pool party at a pool not too far from techno lagoon.
On other ones he'd find stickers or glitter pen drawings on them on the front. Silly little things that added to them. Like when the two were dancing at a late night rave together. He can tell he was the one to draw silly whiskers over both their faces with kitten or dog ears.
“It's not funny Val.” Synth scoffed as she teased him.
He hated how this tidbit of information had taken over the lagoon by storm. The last time he's been the center of all that gossip he was almost overthrown because he made the alliance with the rock trolls. After all they were their first victim's of the war. It didn't sit right with them at first to be friends of any sort…
He's worried now what they'll make of these photos. The one Val pulled out of her own hair wasn't any better. The photo had the two of them in bed together groggy. Synth's copy himself took this picture of them together. A tired and groggy smile as he gently held the pop troll whose face was buried in his neck hand on his chest.
Val snickered as she saw Synth's face blush and ears rise. They're alarms went off at the same time before Synth put away the photos. Game time they better move or else they'd be late.
Branch didn't know why John and Spruce took him here. He was curious and surprised to see a good couple of troll's were gathering. He was sat on the bleachers beside Grandma and Floyd. He noticed Floyd looked tired while Grandma seemed restless. He swaps places with him and distracts her with cards he kept in his hair. Taking a turn to entertain her with card tricks.
She watches ecstatic with a foreign look in her eyes Branch couldn't place. Floyd was surprised but thankful to get a break. Sipping his drink Clay got him from concessions. They all had a talk after they sent Branch to bed in the guest room. Despite his protest a bit about not wanting to overstay but they simply rushed him up. Holly herself was confused till
John and Spruce started to explain what they saw.
That other world seemed fucked up for what made Branch the way he is. They saw themselves splitting up and apart. They saw through his eyes Grandma's brutal death. They saw through his eyes trying his hardest to make friends or appear friendly enough to be adopted. They saw him fending for himself and some of the roughest days and lowest points he's fallen. The better half was at the end when seemingly everything finally fell into place for him. He made healthy friends, there's peace and harmony, he had a loving boyfriend and a respectable position. But that was like 20% of what they saw.
The rest of it was short of a straight up horror film. The brothers were trying to figure out what to do about it or if they should bring it up at all.
Branch looked out to the course from the bleachers. It was full of mud and various obstacles that looked big enough for vehicles. Oh, were they about to watch some kinda derby? That would explain all the rockers and Techno trolls gathering. He could see some country but the rest is mostly Funk. He couldn't spot another pop troll aside from his family and it got a few side eyes and a few glances. Especially when some seemed to have recognized him.
The small fry that had built the lava pools for them. And he had done it only in a matter of hours. Branch sat nervously when the game started..a gate lifted up and out came several vehicles doing a lap around the outer ring. An announcer called out names as the vehicles circled. A big screen lit up showing close ups.
He sat up impossibly more when he heard Val and Synth's names. They were racers and apparently the inventor's of the sport. They waved to the crowd. Synth was driving and Val was in the passenger seat. Not far behind him Holly and Gust were in a car. And the R&B sisters were too. Respective fans cheering for each team.
The game goes till one car is standing. There's two ways to win. Be the last one standing and ink coverage. The second troll that's not driving controls a paintball gun. They have to nail the other cars with it and if someone has more color out the field then they can also win. As the game progresses through water gets added to the field giving a chance to wash off or cover ink but also risk spin outs or getting stuck.
And with the blare of the starting horn they're off. John's cheering for Holly and Gust while Spruce rallies for R&B. Clay isn't too interested and Floyd was just tired. Branch let him rest in his shoulder surprised he could with all the noise. He then saw Riff just a few seats down to the left. He was surprised to see the drummer but waved. He didn't get to see too much of Riff in his home world.
He was not prepared for the death glare he received.
Chapter Text
Branch was excited to have been invited down to come see the racers and their vehicles. Holly hugged her friend Floyd and introduced Branch to Gust…
Gust shook his hands a bit confused by…the vagueness of it all. He couldn't blame her as he wasn't sure if Branch could be called Floyd's brother. Gust asked Branch if they met back in his world which made him think Branch more like an alien. He didn't quite listen to the shorter troll realizing how almost accurate that assessment was. While muted he was one of the brighter pop trolls. He was also almost the shortest pop troll he knew that wasn't a teacup. His ears seemed to move more than other trolls fanning out or coming up or down. He had quite a few scars but looked to be no kind of soldier.
He then noticed him spotting something behind him.
Val was looking over her and Synth's engine. That last turn the vehicle had made an odd sound she wasn't excited about.
She was about to call Riff over when Branch appeared. He spotted something and made a ‘yikes’ expression.
“Hey, your suspension belts are busted.” Branch said casually spotting the issue.
“And how are you- oh yeah the belt's busted.” Riff came up quickly to be surprised.
Branch was a bit on edge after the death glare he got shot earlier. He hadn't even known one so intense it can be shot through bangs. The lanky troll eyed him up and down with a suspicious vibe. Had he upset Riff in some way or something?
The tension lifted whenever Floyd came over to congratulate Val on the win.
“Where's Synth?” Floyd asked, noticing the missing driver.
“He went out to change but hey B Boy. What can ya tell me about this?” Val held up a picture of Branch and his Synth.
Synth was surprised coming up from behind the group to them laughing. He spotted Branch and raised a brow as they were listening.
Telling them how he and his counterpart started dating and funny quirks of him being his boyfriend. How Synth would make quite little sound effects aside from his silly air horns. How he liked his toast barely toasted to the point Branch called it his warm bread. How once when Branch was sick Synth made him soup. Synth somehow burned something in the soup or the soup itself he wasn't sure. But it tasted burnt and Synth admitted he did not know how long you leave a soup to cook on the stove and forgot about it when he was helping clean up and making sure he stayed in bed. How Synth would pass out in the blink of an eye with a shoulder and back rub. How when they once got drunk he found Synth crying eating chips because he wasn't in bed ready to cuddle with him.
Holly was giggling particularly at the soup incident. Branch had a look of joy reminiscing the sweet memory before reality settled in again. Synth felt a pang of guilt and putty though there was nothing he could really do about it. He was surprised the pop troll got to know his copy so intimately.
“Dang. So meeting our fish stick must be a shocker eh?” Val chuckled getting a kick out of this.
“Oh it was like a slap to the face!” Branch said slowly smiling again.
He explained that while his Synth has always been in good health and shape he seemed smaller than this Synth. Val nodded and explained that was probably because Synth and Demo visit the gym often together. This Synth pumps more iron rather than Branch's Synth who did more yoga and treading.
His bigger size and bulk was probably what added to the scare during their first meeting. This Synth was probably a lot stronger than his. Something that Synth took a bit in stride silently till Demo came up behind him blowing his cover.
Meanwhile in another universe..
Lownote hasn't slept in hours as he and the funk trolls had all gathered and were working. Trying to repair and figure out what had gone wrong. The gateway collapsed in on itself imploding from its own suction when it powered on. But even as they were making repairs the computer was having trouble figuring out where the gateway opened up to and from.
It had stopped abruptly after the implosion when it swallowed Branch.
It was terrifying and every minute counts. Branch could be in serious trouble or worse harmed.
Poppy has been pacing and worried sick. Floyd and John Dory were grieving and already fearing the worst. Clay was being comforted by Bruce who came as quickly as he could. Viva didn't know what to do..
They were all worried however for Synth.
Laguna found him alone again in Branch's bunker. Crying again clutching the ring box as he looked at the photos. His Dubstep was gone….just like that.
Laguna came beside her friend and hugged him gently. He cried as she did as he held the ring box close. He was gonna propose that night when Dubstep got home. He was gonna propose after dinner which was his favorite soup no matter how much he burned it.
But he'd never get to…
He cried helpless into his best friend as she started to cry too…
Chapter Text
Branch laid curled up in bed awake with a pain in his chest. After today and collecting the photos that had flown out of his picture book from Val and Synth he couldn't sleep. His Glowfish was somewhere out there in the universe. They were somewhere without him and it hurt and got him just how much he was missing them in such a short week. He had been so sure Lownote and the sister's could and would fix the machine. He was sure that he'd be home in three days.
He wanted Synth…
He sat up from the strange bed that had been given to him. The guest room that his other brothers invited for him to stay in until they figured something out. It's empty and hollow compared to his real bedroom. More often than not he can hear bickering and arguing somewhere in the house most the time too..
He quietly and carefully made his way to the kitchen. Pouring himself a glass of milk to drink quietly in the dark. He had only taken a small sip before he grimaced..
When he's sad or when he can't sleep, Synth sometimes makes him chocolate milk. He teared up a bit before remembering he had some chocolate with him. Sky Toronto gave it to him after he had fixed a machine earlier that morning.
He melted it down and added it to the milk and drank it slowly. He was surprised when he saw Spruce come down and turn the light on.
“What are you doing..?” He asked, rubbing his eyes.
Branch was surprised he had been sweating. Was he wrapping up a work out at this hour?
He murmured an answer over his mug as he sipped. He offered a glass to them to which Spruce reluctantly accepted. It felt wrong not to after knowing what Branch went through.
One of the big things that stood out to him…
Branch survived famine and starvation.
“My god, is everyone bigger here..?” Branch chuckled to himself.
It was around noon after his second shot from Lownote. They ran into a familiar set of guards who found more of Branch’s scattered photos. Boom chuckled as Branch gave his bicep a form squeeze. Ablaze was still trying to wrap his head around how they were Branch's size in another life.
Hype was horrified when he realized it first ahead of his friends.
The trolls population got separated not just by half but by age in the tunnels Branch had mentioned. Branch was in the first half mostly being kids or elderly folk. Trolls meant to set the pace and get a head start so as to not be hurt in the rush. Viva and Clay got separated into the middle ground. Ranging from young to Middle ages adults. One group had more capable and able body trolls to get and provide food. The other half didn't and Branch being an orphan probably didn't help. Branch didn't get enough to eat or had anyone to make sure he did. Branch was smaller than the average troll and a lot thinner too. His bone density wasn't all too good either and it made him rather light.
Trickee tickled him delighted by their new strange friend. They had a band together when they were young in another life. Branch tried to elbow him off but unlike his Trickee this Trickee wouldn't budge. However Ablaze saw it as Branch was laughing with hole chest. They all do that particular elbow to a specific part of Trickee's chest. It gets him off of them quickly with little effort and that was the only way to get the big lug off. Branch truly was a close friend then despite the fact he didn't have the force necessary. Branch was bright in the face, a deep purple almost indigo flushed across his face. He truly looked like a blueberry at that very moment.
He struggled to catch his breath as Trickee held him up. To his surprise suddenly that gripp flexed almost protectively.
When he sobered enough to notice the group of classical trolls he smiled and waved. Despite most misconceptions they would always be the first trolls to gather around any sign of ruckus.
Minute raised a brow curiously seeing him. Was this the newcomer Dante had spoken about..? She was surprised to see a friendly smile and wave as they struggled for air being held up by a guard.
“So…you're Branch..?” Minute asked with a raised brow.
He nodded getting loose from Trickee.
“Yes it's good to meet you …. again Minuete.” He chuckled, offering his hand for a shake.
Floyd was tense seeing it from a distance as was anyone..
The classical lady simply shook it in return rather curiously. As was the flock of classical trolls who had joined her.
“What was our relationship exactly? In your world I mean?” She asked after taking her hand back.
“We weren't exactly close but we're on friendly terms. You were pretty good friends with Poppy and Synth not to mention Dante.” Branch explained with a smile.
She was a good friend to all of his friends. He respected and related to her at times as well with how they both had similar habits and tendencies. One being how they tend to over work themselves or aim for perfection every time.
She raised a brow at Synth's name as the flock let out a collective gasp.
Chapter Text
Synth woke up in a cold sweat that had him shaking as he sat up. He had been tossing and turning all night, unable to sleep. He missed his Dubstep too much to do that.
Branch was like a security blanket in the dark. Nuzzling underneath his chin gently laying on his chest. Whenever he started to get fearful or panicked by the dark almost instinctively Dubstep hair would glow blue for him. He was always warm soft to the touch. He'd smell faintly of grass and rain maybe sometimes even pine or lavender.
When he couldn't sleep Branch would stay up with him or try to. Watching a movie together or talking about random nonsense or even just making random sounds together.
In the morning Dubstep would wake up first but would most days lay in bed and just stare up at him till they woke up or got outta bed. Some mornings he's more than happy to cuddle and lay awake together with them.
Synth grabbed the blanket and walked out of the bedroom. The bunker was always quiet, secluded and secure. It always was and likely always will with his Dubstep’s due diligence. But since he's been gone the silence has grown to be suffocating. Ringing in his ears painfully or his mind would focus solely on ticking clocks and echoes of the bunker settling or a drip. The shadows and darkness seemed to grow and linger and stretch throughout the bunker. The bunker was cold and a cruel reminder that Dubstep was gone.
Trollstopia seemed too painfully bright without him. It seemed like everything hurt to look at with harsh popping colors all around. He's noticed some of the cracks and some trolls scrambling to try and adjust to Branch's absences. Several trolls having to try and take care of the things Branch would have done. Trying to fix the problems Branch would fix up in a moment's notice.
So he hasn't really been leaving the bunker either. But between the two decided places it felt like freshly being stabbed in the chest again. Techno lagoon was even worse in his opinion without Dubstep.
Laguna hugged him gently when she saw him sitting on the couch in shambles. She's been trying to keep his hopes up since the first day. His colours had been draining almost after every night no matter what she or anyone tried. King Trollex was and would be arriving shortly.
Synth's bird cooed in concern from their perch for Synth. They've been a rescue Synth took in years ago and a faithful companion. Branch at first was scared shitless of his bird. Keeping a distance and careful relationship with the bird. He was trying so hard when they first moved in together to please his pet. Trying to learn and establish a bond with them. His bird had done the same until the two got somewhat comfortable.
His bird would still flair its wings and chase Branch around now for fun. Or perhaps they noticed Branch having a cracker or treat they wanted. Branch would also sometimes playfully whistle with his pet.
He had another nightmare tonight. He didn't know where but it always seemed to be somewhere in Trollstopia. It's always too dark despite it being daylight.. he can't make out anything being said. But he can see his Dubstep. Always so far out of reach… and someone beside them.
Lownote called and asked everyone to gather around. They're almost done rebuilding the universal gate. But they had to gather around for …
“...what?” Floyd was in disbelief looking at the three funk trolls.
“You can't be serious… there has to be something right?!” Viva exclaimed standing up.
“I'm sorry…. But it's been about a week. There's still hope but it's slim..” Lownote said softly the charm couldn't mask the gravity of the situation.
There's an endless possibility of what has happened to Branch as well as endless possibilities of where he went. Branch could have been torn to bits and eradicated by the implosion. He could be dead floating between space and time. He could ultimately be changed and altered in some way or another.
Viva was arguing with the ambassador as was Bruce. Surely they had some kinda gadget or back up? Right?! They had everything! Even if they couldn't get him back but if he was harmed they'd have to have some kind of way to heal him. Right?
Floyd was pleading to no one in particular that it was just too early to be making that call. That there had to be some sort of sign their baby brother was alive. He didn't want to believe that Branch was gone like that. He himself had died but only for a moment he couldn't really remember. That itself was scary to think about sometimes.
John was crying uncontrollably as Clay sat in horror. They couldn't believe that this was happening. They had feared the worst but now it seemed all too damn real. Low Note was giving them the signal to start preparing for the worst case scenarios. To start preparing for a memorial, or to help tend and care for a possible maimed Branch. Poppy started to sob as Synth shook.
Poppy was trying to hold out hope that Branch would find a way back. He'd come home and say he missed them all. Maybe he'd be slightly hurt but nothing serious in a moment of panic. He'd come back and smile, letting her hug him briefly before he'd go kiss his boyfriend. He'd let them all hug him as he reassured them he was fine. He'd tell them all about his adventure alone into a new world of the outside of one.
And they would laugh about it and listen to him tell it. They'd laugh about it to their kids and friends once he's safe home.
They all saw in horror how colors started to drain from Synth's scales.
Chapter Text
Branch was giggling while having tea with Minuet and her flock of friends including Dante. Sharing stories happily about their counterparts. Their silly little things and of course their relationship with the other ambassadors.
Minute was surprised to hear she'd have been best friends with Holly and Synth. Dante smirked smugly, having told her he thought they'd be close. They both got that competitive fun spirit about them. An appreciation for hair and especially big hair.
Floyd was anxiously watching biting his nails. His baby brother was too close to the sword slashing psychopath's. They could flip in an instant and would gang up if they feel threatened. Yet Branch was there talking them up with tea trading stories and treat recipes.
John was at home scanning through Branch's memories. Lownote begrudgingly was beside him and Spruce was their mediator. Looking for answers how one troll so impactful could drastically change their reality by not existing. Branch not existing somehow caused the pop string to be lost.
Turns out at age 2 he had found and was able to open the lock box that grandpa had it stored safely in. John couldn't say where that lock box was now. But seeing through the two year old's eyes giggling after doing a puzzle for a pink prize he smiled. Two blue hands clapped excitedly squealing as they called for Grandma pulling out a pretty pink string. Peppy confiscated it, trading Branch a bracelet for it. The toddler unaware happily accepted playing with its colorful beads.
Spruce was looking at a different assortment of memories. Memories of Bruce out by the beachfront restaurant. Bruce relaxed with wrinkles and some weathered skin along his face. A warm fatherly smile on his face looking at Branch. The two playing catch or laughing from crummy dad jokes.
Those memories they were hardly alone.
Bruce had children. 13 happy and beautiful children that called him Daddy. Sweet happy and healthy faces playfully asking a million questions. Constantly moving and playing.
A wife that towered over them all but had warm loving eyes. Eyes that made even his chest flutter. She was nothing like any troll he seen or any woman who begged for a chance to be his girl. No no…
Brandy was in a league of her own.
There was an ache in his chest as he watched the family through Branch's eyes. Family dinners and mundane life work. Friends and of course some common everyday difficulty. Waves and sandy beaches that could calm any angry soul. Warm sunny days and plenty to do and see. A happy family of his own that loved him deeply. A lovely restaurant through his own work and shared passion with a loving wife. A little brother who loved to help out and come visit.
Bruce had freedoms and luxury that Spruce didn't think he had ever wanted.
But now that he sees it for the first time..
His whole chest aches with a want and a desire. Longing for something he never had thought of until now. Lownote noticed how focused he was on those memories of Branch…
Each memory was stored and separated into color fragments of the crystal John had scanned Branch with. Lownote hates magic as it made no sense and followed no pattern. They were searching through the golden parts of Branch's memories. Since Branch never recalled having taken part in being the reason the string was lost Lownote reasoned it must have happened when Branch was young. And low and behold he was correct. Branch found a capsule made by his friend's grandfather and managed to open it.
He looked at the big pile of black crystals and a single red one. He's assuming Black were memories of traumatic events. But what was this red one?
John popped his hand much to his disbelief.
“No no no no we do not touch red crystals.” John warned him in that tone he hates.
“Huh..? Why?” Spruce asked curiously, tearing away from the scene.
“.....Well…. Our baby brother isn't a virgin.” Johnny said trying to be as calm and mature as possible.
Hey. Sometimes digging through memories there's things you don't wanna see. Sexually intimate moments are a big one that pop up more often than you think.
“Oh god gross it wasn't with Chaz was it?!” Lownote felt disturbed greatly by it.
“Whoa, I'm a slut sure but I have standards.” Chaz reprimanded the scientist appearing behind him.
Spruce was beyond bafflement. Someone fucked their baby brother. The little guy who sang so beautifully it captured the entire Trollstopia society's attention. The Little miracle worker who fixed two major problems in less than five hours.
He could not fathom or figure out who the hell his counterpart would let touch him.
He didn't wanna find out this way either. Now that he thought of it the more it disturbed him. They're literally looking at him as a baby to a young 25 year old adult. He doesn't wanna think about that about his baby brother.
Chapter Text
Branch woke up in a cold sweat. He couldn't explain why though as he sat up alone in bed. He noticed after a minute that his door was open. That's odd. He thought he had closed it and doesn't remember getting up at all in the middle of the night. The house was silent oddly enough. He looked around and noticed soon that Floyd was home…
With a fever.
He didn't look too great now that he thought about it after he had tea with Minuet. Not to mention he's usually pretty exhausted or so it seems. So he gently tucks him in and out the medicine beside a cup of water for him. He walked downstairs and noticed a brown bag labeled ‘Clay’. Had Clay left his lunch? He checks its contents to find a sandwich and a banana.
He starts making some oatmeal as he remakes a sandwich for Clay. Instead of just tossing it in, put it in a Ziploc bag. He put in the banana, a small thing of berries, a protein bar and a bag of chips. No drastic changes as he doesn't know if this is just how this Clay eats. His Clay back home wasn't the biggest fan of Peanut butter and jelly. They prefer ham but in a pinch peanut butter and jelly would do.
He got Grandma up with her pills for the day handily ready day by day and instructions taped to a wall. He gently helped her take them with a warm glass of milk to her enjoyment. She also loved her warm oatmeal with softened berries cut into chunks for her.
Branch then got to clean up the kitchen and then started taking care of chores as quietly as possible. Grandma was getting ready upstairs and he was wearing shorts and a tank top today. He wiped up all the counters as fast as he could. Used his hair to sweep as he quickly did any dishes he hadn't done while he was cooking. Straightening up the living room he noticed a duffel bag with Spruce's name embroidered on it. Oh no he must have forgotten this too. He saw the door down to John's workshop and peeled inside. No he wasn't there..
Grandma coming down the stairs had a shopping list. She was able to point out the calendar her boys shared. It wasn't hung up as a couple of weeks ago it got torn and wouldn't hang anymore. Clay had a seminar today in the college he teaches and Spruce had a photoshoot. John was out on account of magic truffle hunting.
Ok he can do this.
He arrived at the school first and after asking for a bit of help he hurried over to Clay's Classroom doors. However the second his hand graced the handle several students around him jumped to attention. Trying to stop the unknowing soul as the door creaked. There was a rule that anyone who entered the class had to solve the question on the board. This was advanced level physics. You're put on the spot immediately and sometimes if you guess right you still got to show your work.
“I got your lunch.” Branch said softly, holding it nervously seeing the people.
His brother's class all turned to look at him confused. Clay himself as well as Branch made his way down the steps to quietly give him his lunch.
“Thanks Branch… Do you know what's the answer to this-” Clay thought he might as well only to be stunned.
“A Velocity of 65 mph.” Branch said to his surprise unphased looking up at the board for a moment.
Even quickly showing his work before hurrying back up the stairs and quickly off campus. Leaving a baffled professor and a surprised and curious class.
It didn't take long to find out where Spruce's photoshoot was. They had stopped for popsicles when they noticed a commotion by the tracks. They had a section of space at the train station to work with promoting casual wear. Spruce in a sour and off mood only partially due to his left duffel bag had everyone suffering. Every fan wanted to cheer him up or appease him. And he himself isn't doing what he'd normally do so enthusiastically in front of the camera.
They were all surprised to hear someone call his name. Slip past security and have Spruce stand alert. A baby blue skinned troll with dark almost navy blue hair that with partial sunlight looked almost like it had the same violet shine as Spruce. With crystal eyes and a purple nose and soft warm features. Wearing a cute tank top piece with a small almost missable pale blue detailing like a little bow front and center on his shirt collar. Pale blue shorts showing pretty little legs with white socks and pale blue shoes to match.
“Branch, what are you doing here?!” Spruce was genuinely surprised till he saw his duffle bag.
He handed it over explaining he found it as Grandma smiled in her chair. They have a treat for him as well. Coffee and his favorite snack bar and a small chocolate bar too. One of the camera crew kept taking photos as the two brothers smiled. After quickly finishing his coffee and giving Branch a pat on the head he hurried to get back to work. The pick me up was just as he needed.
After finishing their popsicles. They do a quick run home to double check on Floyd. He was groggy but he was waking up. He took the medicine surprised that Branch had been taking care of him. Branch brought him toast with butter and a cup of ginger ale. They were going to the store after checking up on him…
He didn't know why but it shocked and touched him that they were worried about him. Branch gave a kiss to his head and gave him his favorite chips in case he wanted a snack…
Branch took Grandma with him to the markets getting what's on the list. A few adjustments of added baking and soup ingredients. It was almost nostalgic cooking in the kitchen with Grandma again. He was preparing soup for Floyd and helping her in ways he remembers she once had done for him… making a pie together that made her smile and beam happily.
He couldn't help but smile too.
The house when John returned was cleaned and tidy. Grandma knitting on the couch as the smell of soup and pie still lingered. Branch up and about just moving things about and along.
The house seemed more peaceful than it ever had.
Chapter Text
Spruce coming home to a lit up house with laughter coming from the kitchen was a surprise. There was the smell of pie and supper and Grandma was on her rocking chair knitting happily. Branch welcomed him home with a happy chirp. He made dinner for them all again though gave him a shush gesture.
Floyd was ill today and was in bed with some soup. Branch got him a plate as he sat down. A small bowl of soup paired with a salad, and a healthy serving of chicken. He already measured it out and what he needed and was told by Floyd his current diet.
“Oh.. thank you.” Spruce said softly rather pleasantly surprised.
It sure did beat coming home and having to cook for himself after a busy day. It did make him think and reminded him of his counterpart's life. He was envious of his other version's loving family. He never considered what else from day to day life included. Like things just like coming home for dinner. Branch knew a thing or two about cooking a good meal too. Needless to say, it was delicious. John was drinking from his mug happily still chuckling from whatever conversation they were having prior. When he asked Branch simply took his seat and smiled, answering with a simple ‘dad jokes’.
Spruce nodded before finding himself chatting with Branch about his food. Telling him about how he learned to cook and what he did specifically tonight. He even shared that his counterpart Bruce actually was showing him a couple new tricks. Brandy too, especially about sea food to help make more meals his boyfriend was accustomed too. How she had the best seafood boil he's ever had and he's yet to master or re-create it. Brandy sounded amazing with every story. Of course Branch didn't know Spruce already knew who she was from examining his shard memories but it was nice to see him try to describe and paint her picture for him.
Clay actually got dinner on the way home so he was surprised to see his brother's at the dining table. John had his second slice of pie while Spruce glared at him because he couldn't really have one. Branch gave him a spoon full of pie though because ‘a bite never hurt anybody’.
“You want a slice of pie Clay? Grandma and I made it today.” Branch offered already cutting a slice.
He accepted it quietly, surprised by the warm atmosphere. He looked about taking in the foreign atmosphere of the house. Grandma was humming and laughing at her shows in the living room. John and Spruce were both at the table not at each other's throats for once. Branch covered Floyd's slice of pie in whip cream just like how Floyd eats it. Heading up stairs to go check on their ill brother.
It felt like it's always been like this. He knows it's never been but the peace, and calmness of it all was convincing. The nostalgia was there but Branch made it feel complete in a way? It was so strange….
Floyd had finished his soup and the chapter of his new book he's been meaning to read. Branch came in with pie and whip cream for him. He didn't know when or why he started crying but he did. Branch came to his side with tissues asking if he was hurt. He just hugged Branch tight and held him.
He held him the whole night after Branch went to put away dishes, Grandma went to bed and he changed. Branch didn't mind sleeping with Floyd copy or not. This beats sleeping and struggling alone by a long shot. Floyd combed his hands through Branch's hair. Sniffling silently as Branch slept cuddled close to his chest. He needed this more than he ever realized. He hadn't realized how much he missed being cared for. Having someone care and help him like Branch had today. How has he survived without Branch? The way he picked up things on the go. He took such amazing care of everything!!
He's been so thoughtful and so kind and sweet…
When they woke up he yawned just like a kitten and groaned when He attempted to wake him. Burying his face into a pillow stretching before drifting off again. He didn't wanna get up but they had too.
Synth, Val, Holly and Dante came in through the workshop. Lownote and John called for a meeting with them and Viva to discuss Branch. Branch's absences on their timeline and his overall presence. Not to mention the fact that he revealed though not directly where the pop trolls string is.
“As a baby Branch found the string in a lock box my grandad made and kept in the closet of my childhood pod.” John explained showing the memory shard of excited fun Branch had.
Synth was eyeing a single red crystal curiously. Val was trying to wrap her head around the idea of a pop string being located. Why were they telling them this? Weren't they scared that maybe Val would relay this to Barb? Why bring it up at all even? Lownote seeming to catch her trail of thought cleared his voice. While he hated having to work with John this may prove vital. And in case Barb decided to pick up where she started..
They played the memory of Branch being struck by the ultimate power chord. The scream of agony and pain in blinding white filled the screen. Holly was shocked by him jumping from the air into the line of fire. if the scream wasn't enough when he got hit seeing him collide onto the ground as a rock formed around him like a cage…
The whole ordeal was terrifying to see through his eyes.
“The pop string is the only string missing but if someone got their hands on it and completed the chord it could be trouble.” Lownote said in a firm tone removing the black crystal.
Viva was shaken herself seeing Branch throw himself in front of Poppy. She's grateful in another life her sister had Branch to protect her. Still seeing the development herself and being told about the venture through Branch's eyes was alarming. Soon she wanted to look at their first venture together. About bringing peace between the trolls and Bergens.
But their main priority now was getting that string…,
Chapter Text
Synth was sitting in his room laying back in his bed. Thinking as he held the crystal in his hand. It was the only red one he saw in Branch's memory shards. He wasn't sure what it meant or if it meant anything serious..
But it was red. That was like the primary color of a warning or attention to something that could be dangerous. And considering they want to go risk their lives in Bergen town…
He put it into a projector he had. The techno trolls had something similar however he realized it didn't have audio. The whole thing was in red as well. But he watched with peaked curiosity to see it was a memory of him- or at least his counterpart. It started with kissing, slowly becoming more as they pulled each other in close. There was a gentle unease and certainty. Before Synth realized what he was watching he was too stunned to speak.
In another life Branch and he were each other's first.
Branch was surprised to be playing a game of mini golf with Viva. Poppy and Creek were playing as well, curious. They all were on edge slightly about what they're about to ask. Branch was about to swing again before he nearly fell over with a heavy gust of wind.
“Ok. What is up with that?!” Branch looked around bewildered as Creek tilted his head.
Now recalling it, Branch seemed just as confused the first time it happened. Poppy looked between him and towards the far side of the village.
“Oh you know… the Wind blower?” Viva said softly, checking her hair again.
“.... Y'all didn't chase it off?” Branch looked baffled.
Years ago during the early settlements of trolls village there was a young Wind Blower. Branch remembers when he first stumbled upon it foraging in a big cave by itself. It was snoring and at first sounded like it was growling. It was scary as hell until he finally gathered enough courage to peak inside. The small blue creature slept with its legs sprawled out on its tummy. The snores echoed as it breathed in and out. He could feel small tugs standing in front of it as it sucked in air and bugs to eat. And when it blew out you could feel it like a breeze.
It was small and out of the way. No real threat or real reason to move it. So initially like the adults who had stumbled on it he thought nothing about it until he stumbled upon it in the monster guide books. Wind blowers can and will lay dormant for their entire lives. However as they grow older the harder it is to wake them up to move. Not to mention they eat whatever they'll pull in. So if a troll is unlucky enough to be too close they'll be sucked in and eaten.
To Branch's surprise and horror his eyes were wide seeing the once so small critter now almost fit the size of the cave. The pull was so much stronger he was struggling not to slip even with the weights on his ankles. He tied his hair back as he saw various things be sucked into the sleeping monster’s mouth. A lot of shrubs that used to be here long since pulled out of the ground and into its mouth. Branch was almost pulled off his feet if Viva hadn't grabbed him.
“You've run that thing off?!” Viva exclaimed in uncertainty worriedly.
“When it was a baby! That there is an adult! Only two things will get it to move!” Branch yelped back taking in its size.
How did it get so bad?! It breathes in longer than it breathes out. So they need to be careful not to get pulled in more so than about being pushed away. They need an environmental cause to drive it away. Like a fire to make it inhale smoke and startle it away. Or get pheromones of its opposite sex to lure it out to go find a mate.
“Where did you get pheromones?!” Creek asked quite fearfully, holding onto his necklace and Viva her crown.
“I didn't need them then! All I had to do was yell really loudly!” Branch explained.
He's not sure how to do this. He definitely had a kit to make faler pheromones in his bunker. But his bunker doesn't exist here and starting a fire anywhere close enough to make it inhale enough smoke to kick in its instincts would be risky. Both options aren't really solid and his third plan wasn't really a plan as it was a hope.
He took the pepper he was carrying with tongs and raised it. The spiciest pepper grown in Rock territory. He let it go and watched it get sucked in. He saw a bit of discomfort before he took out the jar he had of it and opened it to send them all into its mouth.
Its eye's shot open in shock and looked this way and that. Suddenly up it ran the opposite way from the village after Branch then played a horn as loud as possible to spook it into running that way.
“..... that was…” Viva trailed off as Poppy beamed.
“Incredible! We hadn't been able to solve how to get rid of it for years!!” Poppy exclaimed hugging him tight.
Creek was concerned for the poor creature's mouth and stomach. But considering previously considered options it was far more humane.
“It's no biggie. I'm glad we took care of that before anyone got hurt!” Branch smiled before being tossed up and spun around.
It's so odd but contagious how happy this Poppy is. His Poppy didn't really like it whenever he captured or drove away monsters. He's even surprised Creek has nothing to say about it. Just a thoughtful look and an appreciative smile.
“How did you first learn of the Wind blower..?” Viva asked as they started heading back.
“Oh. As a kid I started my bunker not to far. This way actually.” Branch said curious coming to the spot he started all those years ago.
He was surprised to find himself smiling as he looked over the area. It was like nothing had changed aside from a few plants he planted. He was quite proud of himself seeing how little he disturbed the area and how well he hid his bunker from the outside world.
“I used to keep the door right…” Branch trailed off as his smile faded.
A hushed silence fell on them all seeing a hidden trap door..
Chapter Text
Lownote inspected the walls of the makeshift underground shelter. Poppy and Viva were beside themselves as…Creek was trying to be supportive.
“So…you… you uh… do all this yourself?” Creek asked wearily watching the roof above them.
This screamed unsafe and dangerous. It was dirty, dimly lit by only one light. Stuffy and kinda hot as well underneath. It was not suitable to live in at all. It was actually kinda concerning to think about someone actually living here.
“Yes! It looks just like it did when I was …..I wanna say 8 but I'm also thinking 12?” Branch said with a smile with a twinkle in his eye.
They called Lownote and Branch's brothers to the scene. The finding of the bunker was a shock to them all as they shifted uncomfortably. However Branch was beaming with excitement. He's brightened significantly to the point they didn't think possible. He's practically been bouncing in place and running about. Going on and on about little memories or where each little dug out space or tunnel went.
“You're…awfully happy about this.” Lownote said with a raised brow taking a scan of the area.
He jumped back in surprise when Branch came up right beside him.
“Of course I'm ecstatic! Do you not see this place?! It's evidence!” Branch cheered happy beside him brimming with energy.
He made an oh sound before running up topside. He looked around before screaming with cheer. They all exchanged looks before following the sound. They found Branch not too far away rolling around a couple of mounds of dirt. Piled high and messy as well as a few scattered pots and various other things.
“Even the dirt mounds are here!!” Branch was laughing with his whole chest.
John and his brothers just arrived to see him spring up and shake off a layer of dust. Their baby brother is covered in dirt and smiling like a little kid. It had them stunned and confused as they watched.
“It's where I dumped the dirt from digging out the bunker! Look! I used to fill these pots with soil, water, and other stuff to make Clay's, bricks, and stuff! I took water from the river just down that path!” Branch exclaimed as happy as a mad man running about.
Viva stepped forward to grab his shoulders to get him to focus. She didn't understand what this was all about. She didn't understand what exactly all this meant.
“I'm sorry I'm sorry… I-I don't know where they are or who or what happened… but.. I existed! They existed!” Branch held her back excited and on the brink of tears.
Clay looked between the two and then to Lownote. Lownotes face had an uncertain expression watching Branch. Clay was lost on who they were talking about. Who existed? Why was Branch so worked up about them?
“The bunker is evidence I existed here! Maybe under a different name! Maybe something happened to change my fate! But I existed! It means I haven't erased myself or my world! My world is out there! I get to go home!!” Branch cheered a few tears slipping as laughed excitedly.
Floyd felt his heart stop at those words. Branch was talking about going home. Going somewhere that wasn't with them and they couldn't follow. A painful reminder that Branch didn't belong to them. Spruce was fiddling with an early copy of that magazine he modeled for. One that had Branch in it together with him as a blur of a train went by. John felt a pit grow in his stomach from something he didn't wanna know.
Lownote cleared his throat taking Viva's position. She willingly stepped aside trying to grasp or understand. The idea of Branch leaving was as odd to her and she couldn't place why.
“Branch… this doesn't prove anything. The original theory may still be true. Remember what I said…? The universe is and will treat you like a foreign body. It's either going to try to destroy or adopt you in some way.” Lownote said softly and as gently as he could.
The bunker could be something the universe in itself had done. Trying to understand the odd presence that had stumbled into it. Trying to correct its presence by trying to assimilate it always being there. As much as he would want this to be true for the little troll he couldn't let them get their hopes up. It simply would be bad practice and truthfully cruel in its own way. But Branch only nodded, wiping his face.
“I know. But it's a chance I'm hoping for!” He smiled softly, giving the doctor an ache in his chest.
Being friends with his Poppy really must have affected him. Loving his Synth even more so now hearing it come from his mouth. The chance that they're really out there somewhere still with this discovery was enough to tip it out of a 50/50 for him. And he'll hold onto that for as long as he can.
He hugged the doctor tight before Clay cleared his throat. Suggesting they leave the area and give it time to either grow or stay. If it is the universe then it'll likely continue trying to expand or grow the bunker. Currently arguments can be made for both sides. It didn't seem like it was abandoned after all. But for Branch to be erased then there would be nothing to model the bunker and its progress off of either…
They started to walk back in silence as Branch went on a rant rambling. Sharing childhood memories of living and playing in these forests. When they got back to the village the other ambassadors were gathered.
Branch raised a brow but still filled with a renewed sense of hope and joy of nostalgia he smiled. Seeing him dirty Dante out a hand on his chest rather than be taken back. Holly giggled pinching his cheek teasing him affectionately. Synth avoided his gaze as Val looked him up and down curious.
“Hey… boy toy… they ask you about it yet?” Val asked getting to the point.
“Ask…what?” Branch looked at her confused..
Lownote put a hand on his shoulder.
Chapter Text
“Are you out of your mind?!” Floyd exclaimed, getting in front of Branch.
Branch was surprised by the situation and Floyd's reaction. They want to take him to Bergen town again.
“Floyd we know it's a lot to ask but this is important.” Viva stepped in as the ambassadors exchanged glances.
“What could possibly be so important to send him out there?!” He stood protectively in front of him.
Branch was in shock by the request and Floyd's protective outbursts. His older brother stood defiantly as he and Viva were about to go out. Floyd thought it was wildly inappropriate to ask Branch something like that. Even if he had befriended Bergen's in another life, to ask him to waltz back into dangerous territory was obscene. However it made sense to ask him as he had experience before and had been the one to open the box. Viva wouldn't be sending him in alone either; they have many capable trolls to retrieve and bring it back.
John was the one to pitch the idea initially.
“Listen Branch, what do you have to say about it? Do you want to come?” John came to ask his youngest brother.
“You don't have to answer that.” Floyd interfered as if he had been Branch's lawyer.
“Listen he will be fully guarded and protected, we are not sending him empty handed and alone.” Viva argued, shooting back her remark.
Synth raised an eye as Branch managed to skillfully and slowly back away. Disappearing into a bush before he followed him. He followed him just around a block or two away while they argued. He tried not to think about what he saw on the crystal earlier. They came to a stop to sit though Branch jumped a bit when he realized Synth followed him.
They sat in silence as they tried to think about everything. Synth couldn't really care about going to Bergen town. With consideration, the pop trolls string is probably better off lost. Hell it's the whole reason Barb lost. If they gather them all up sounds pretty doomed to just not expect someone to try something.
“Would I be crazy if I went…?” Branch asked, suddenly making Synth falter.
Wait. He would genuinely go? Why the hell would he wanna do that? He has the least amount of reason or responsibilities to this whole thing. Sure he has to open the thing apparently but that's about it. They know roughly where it should be. Any information they probably needed was already extracted from his brain through the shards.
“Yes. Honestly. Very.” Synth turned to look at him fully.
Branch tensed, rubbing his arms nervously.
“I just, I dunno feel kinda obligated.. I've been through this before and have experience. And it's only getting the string back..right?” Branch asked, looking up at the taller.
Branch probably could not do anything to make the Bergen's and troll's live in harmony. If anything that was a Poppy only specialty. But his absence shouldn't have changed anything in Bergen town specifically right? Nothing should have changed.
“You're not obliged by any means…. Look, wait, maybe see who Viva would send with you first.” Synth said, sighing deeply still baffled.
Branch has done more than his fair share of help and setting the peace. He does not have to get involved at all. It's likely just a reassurance thing and not some test.
However he hadn't accounted for who Viva would hire. Branch agreed without hesitation as Boom gave him a big hug. Floyd shot Viva with a look of accusation. Had she intentionally hired the trolls Branch considered to be his closest friends for this?! Had she already practically planned for him to go?!
Clay tried to silently reign him in, stepping on his foot. To their surprise they and the ambassadors heard various chirps and calls. Looking up various messenger critters circled above before landing beside their corresponding ambassador. Poppy waited anxiously as each ambassador read their notes.
“They're coming.” They all said in various summaries.
Word about a strange multidimensional visitor had reached the other nations. Some more touched than other's yet all very curious.
“Should we delay the expedition then..?” Spruce asked but Viva shook her head.
“No. They should all arrive shortly after the whole thing is done. While the retrieval team is away we'll prepare for them.” Viva explained once more crushing Floyd.
For them all to gather at once was a big deal. And it seemed to imply they'd all arrive together rather than individually by the timing and some wording. They're likely forming a council to share their thoughts and what information they do know already. After all it's big news and Branch's presence has already been greatly impactful.
“Ok. We'll be back in a couple of days tops.” Ablaze said confidently scooping up Branch.
“I'll go with you.” Synth said shocking even himself.
Val only wiggled her eyebrows to get an eye roll and a playful shove.
“Just to make sure no magic problems arise or as back up.” Synth clarified demonstrating a bit of his talent.
Rolling water through his fingers and up his arm in ease before freezing it. Taking shape of an intricate piece of jewelry that caught Branch's attention. This Synth could freeze water?! That's incredible!! Val on the other hand wasn't as convinced there wasn't some other motive.
Chapter Text
Branch was getting settled in for their first night on their trip to Bergen town. Branch had his sleeping bag rolled out in the tent. Synth reading a book beside him. He seemed rather happy and surprised by how well equipped they all were on this expedition. Boom even asked him about his cheerful nature and he chuckled nervously.
“When me and Poppy had done so we didn't have a lot of gear. Only I really packed and I didn't bring everything I had liked cause I had to rush.” Branch confessed as he laid down and zipped his bag back up.
He snuggled and got comfortable as the lights went out. Synth tensed uncomfortable before he noticed a little light from Branch's hand next to him. A little glow stick hidden from the others but gave him just enough light for some comfort. It's almost as unnerving as it was comforting how well Branch knew him. Especially with a soft knowing smile as he gently passed the glow stick. He took it gently from Branch and kept it hidden in his sleeping bag.
There's some quiet chatter and for a moment he drifts off. It had felt like only an instant when he had closed his that he woke up. He couldn't remember what he saw but the ringing cries out for Branch echoed in his head. A deep pain in his chest and a tightness over his breath made him look for the pop troll. He was asleep beside him still breathing softly.
Branch was beside him. Branch was safe and in no way harmed or endangered. He is not sure why he was suddenly so panicked. Boom had his arm around Branch's body protectively. He could see in the faint glow stick light however Hype was sitting up and also seeing it. The two locked eyes for a moment before a silent agreement. Hype stole Boom back moving his arm and Synth stole Branch.
He pulled him in close away from boom as Hype then stole Branch's initial spot. Successfully switching without waking either up. Branch stirred a bit but nuzzled in closer, putting a hand on his chest. He could smell the familiar scent of sea salt but instead of hints of citrus he smelled something harder. Almost smoked, husky smell mixed with the familiar sea salt…
But the rhythmic beat under his fingertips was unmistakable. He smiled, pressing himself closer happily. Synth….
Synth wasn't sure what to make of Branch's unconscious advance. The pop trolls moved on in his sleep to wrap his arms around him and nuzzled his head just under his chin and jaw. He let him strangely keep his arms around him gently..
When he woke up again they had all moved closer together into a cuddle pile. So thankfully he didn't have to make any awkward excuses or reasons. Branch still seemed embarrassed however, apologizing.
They continued their journey at a faster pace than Branch anticipated. The others had far more stamina and strength than he had thought possible. At one point when he was tucking out Ablaze grabbed him and hoisted him up in one arm. Something Synth didn't really like but kept quiet about.
When they had reached the tunnels Branch lead the way. Quickly helping navigate and pull them on top of the tree.
“.... there's a lot more flowers than I reme- What the hell?!” Branch exclaimed, surprised to see the sight.
The Bergen's were gathered up ahead as well as many races. They were gathering as In gront of the castle gates was a large open stage with red carpet. They practically had premium seats from where they stood. However the best seat was on the throne specially placed for the lovely Queen. Yes. Queen.
Bridget was a queen in this world. She hadn't married Gristle so he was just at a loss on how this had happened. Why were their roles reversed? And they had never ever been a single tourist that ever willingly came to Bergen town. And these flowers and street side vendors weren't here before. He spotted several selling fruits and tomatoes. And several large posters before he saw what was going on.
Years ago in absence of the unity of Bergen's and troll's Bridget had an idea. She held an open mic contest day and night, for anyone and anything. The goal was to find a new source of happiness in a new form. Through perhaps song and dance as it was what the trolls primarily did. Even though they hadn't found their permanent idol or their new source the town had improved. Many wanna be stars, indie music enjoyers, or even talent agents stopped by. Revenue increased, and some things majorly improved. And if nothing else it atleast made things more interesting and less bleak around the town.
The winner would receive the winning money, as well as a contract to perform regularly for the town. The only way to win was to be able to get over 89% liking from the Bergen population. Seeing the scoreboard on Bridget's side it seemed the highest was 69%.
“Well I'll be damned.” Trickee said softly adjusting his goggles.
“What's the plan…?” Synth asked soon after looking amongst the crowd.
This definitely puts more pressure on the whole operation. The gathered towns folk are not that far ahead gathered together. When they saw smoke gather on stage as two strange beings took center stage …
He wanted to tear his ear fins off. It was even horrible. It was Horrendous. Velvet and Veneer couldn't hold a note correctly let alone move. They were immediately booed and had tomatoes thrown about at them.
“.....I guess we move when they're distracted?” Branch offered unsure looking about on the tree.
It wasn't in full bloom or fully healed like at the end of their venture. However he's guessing due to the energy, and less toxic community the troll tree has managed to remain somewhat healthy….
They didn't have much coverage and there's no guarantee but he's hoping Grandma's pod is still hanging and open. Otherwise it is a shriveled up bud, or long sense decomposed or scattered in pieces on the ground.
Chapter Text
They gathered slowly around the low branches of the old troll tree. Careful of every creak and shaky leaves. They gathered around the spot that had started it all…
“Where the fuck..?” Synth was looking around in confusion.
“It's not bloomed. The tree is weak. None of the pods left behind- if they didn't fall -shriveled up into a bulb.” Branch explained putting a hand to his chin.
Without the magic, care, music or presence of the trolls to call the tree home the tree couldn't. He's guessing it being in this condition was thanks to the contest not too many yards away. But it won't be enough to support any pods. They gotta get this tree in tip top condition to access his childhood home. But the question is how do they do that?
“Perhaps we can remove the pod bud, and move it to troll village.” Boom said prodding at it with a stick.
“No no, that would take too long and it would dry out before we could make the transplant.” Ablaze said, examining it closely.
It has to be opened here. However they can't get the pod to bloom or grow without music or magic. And that might get the attention of the Bergen's. They'll have to think and come up with a solid plan.
Meanwhile in the village a few things were already happening. Floyd was bustling about the family house. At first Spruce thought he had been just stress cleaning. However when he noticed him carrying delivered boxes and…bags of dirt?
“Floyd what are you doing?!” Spruce finally broke away from his routine to go investigate.
“Nothing I'm just…” Floyd trailed off looking about.
The guest room where Branch has been staying has become a mess. He was trying to make it more like Branch. Trying to tell himself if he has a room here it'll feel like he didn't leave or…. maybe he won't wanna leave. Which is silly. Branch has a whole bunker in his home world. He doesn't know what that bunker looks like, but Branch seemed very happy in the unfinished one. Spruce for once didn't know what to make of Floyd trying to make the room more Branch. Especially with how gaudy it was turning out to be.
“...... Ok move aside. You need more of a me touch with this.” Spruce stepped in and looked around.
He got rid of the various rocks Floyd carried in and the bags of dirt for starters. Branch sure did have an attachment with the ground and nature but he was also a cutie pie and rather clean. So he put the soil and rocks into potted plants. He dimmed the room down a few notches and fished out an old flower like lamp shade to go over the ceiling lights. He changed the colors to dark yet warm. Comfortable browns and greens with pops of soft pastels.
“Oh wow.” Floyd was surprised by the work his older brother had done.
Spruce smiled proudly adding the finishing touch. A sign on the door. No boyfriends allowed. John was just walking by when he noticed it.
“He's bi. He initially had a crush on Poppy.” John pointed out casually.
Floyd was taken aback but Spruce just took a marker out to edit. In small writing for no girlfriend's too.
“What are y'all putting on his door?” Grandma waddled over curious.
Adjusting her glasses to try and read it. But a whistle from downstairs got their attention and they left Grandma to gently sound out the sign. Clay had come back and he had papers.
Adoption papers? He had gotten papers today for Branch. If…worse comes to worse and Branch stays with them he thought maybe officially adopting him would be best. A last place anyone would want would be stranded without legal document or paper trail connecting them to family.
“I mean it's not too soon right…?” Clay asked setting it down.
Granted John already is head of the family house. He has a say over Grandma now due to her declining health. With adoption over Branch John would have stayed over him to an extent like the rest of them. If marriage or courtships were to happen he'd get to decline or say no on Branch's behalf. As well as medical notices if Branch himself can not make a decision.
Viva granted him the papers as she had bigger problems. The king of techno had come in person immediately. And he's livid to have heard that Synth had gone to Bergen town. He wanted Synth to pull out of this place a long time ago. Now he's gone to and is in the most dangerous place alive?!
He was partially upset particularly with Viva. He knows she can't stop him but this was territory she knew. She knew just how dangerous yet she threw that option out there anyway. The fact she had even considered it pissed him off.
He was counting down the clock before he go and gets him himself.
Lownote was counting down the changes and the seconds underground. Repairs had taken a backseat as he had to focus his attention to this. It's changed again, the underground home and system was still gaudy but finished rooms had started to appear. Their Branch remained non-existent. The universe was in fact working to quickly assimilate him now though with another Branch's presence. But the speed can be alarming. The universe is aware of Branch and rather quickly is trying to replicate his home. Rather strange behavior but it can be a disaster. Especially if he's wrong and it's not the universe's doing.
He'll have to keep Branch from coming down here for now…
Chapter Text
Branch was looking at the stage and back at the bud. Looking between them both uncertain.
“...ok I have an idea.” Branch said softly clasping his hands together.
Synth raised a brow at him waiting and wondering what exactly his idea was. Hype looked at the stage and then at Branch. Horrified when the pieces clicked together.
“Absolutely not, they would devour you!” Hype interjected crossing his arms.
“Ok but hear me out! My Bergen's were able to become friends with us and Bridget - while she wasn't queen was a big part of that!” Branch defended himself and his idea.
It's worth a shot to perform enough just to get the bud to open. One of two of them can go do a surprise performance. With the energy created they'll be able to open up the pod enough to grab the canister and go.
“But nothing! How you gonna get on that stage and not immediately get rushed by all the Bergen's?!” Ablaze asked making Branch look around before pointing up.
“From the top of the cage and those streamers! I'll be out of reach yet close enough to power the tree!” Branch said quickly Pointing them out from above.
Boom was hesitant but this seemed like the best idea they had.
“We'll cover you but you need to stay up and out of sight until we get the bud to open.” Boom said with a reluctant look in his eyes.
Synth didn't know how he felt about this. He watched quietly however as Branch climbed to the top of the tree and used his hair to get him to the top of the cage. He tripped a bit but soon he was running along the tightrope of the banner. He was above the crowd on the string carrying the colored streamers.
Ablaze didn't like this one but but he watched the bud like a hawk. Turning his gaze away in case this went south. Yes Branch may have been his counterpart's friend, yes Branch has been a delight. But if he falls from such a height or is grabbed by a Bergen he knows how ugly it will be to see. Trickee watched him carefully as Boom drew a bow. They saw a clear uncertainty on his face. An uncertainty of what to sing..
Then the sound hit the air…
(Applause - Lady Gaga)
“I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong
To crash the critic saying, "Is it right or is it wrong?"
If only fame had an I.V, baby could I bear?
Being away from you, I found the vein, put it in here
I live for the applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause, live for the-
Way that you cheer and scream for me
The applause, applause, applause
Give me that thing that I love (I'll turn the lights out)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch (Make it real loud)
Give me that thing that I love (I'll turn the lights out)
Put your hands up, make 'em touch, touch (Make it real loud)
Make it real loud”
The Bergen's all looked up in disbelief. The guest gasped as tourists aimed their cameras up. The bud twitched in response to the music much to Ablaze's astonishment. Velvet's eyes shined in awe as Veneer started to dance a bit.
“I live for the applause, applause, applause
I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause, live for the-
Way that you cheer and scream for me
The applause, applause, applause”
Synth had to admit, the song was catchy and electric. Branch was dancing in and on the banners hopping between them and careful tricks. It had his audience fooled and distracted though.
“It's working… it's working!!” Hype cheered before he realized something.
The pod was slowly growing but it didn't seem like one don't would be enough. They need to get Branch to follow up his performance with something else. Another song! One to really get them all going. Synth moved to join him but Trickee beat him to it. Boom stopping Synth with a hand to his shoulder. The Bergen's have never seen techno trolls before. Better not risk them searching for the other tribes to replace their happiness…
Trickee joined Branch up on the wire much to his surprise. The collective growing shock below added to it when Trickee grabbed him. He got the hint when they started dancing. Synth watched very intently of their duo as Branch clung to Trickee. Trickee was pulling more advanced moves and tricks. Even tossing Branch up into the air to catch him. Ablaze tore him out of his trance however as with a whistle.
The pod was barely big enough to fit into but Ablaze quickly hopped in. And found the canister amongst the clutter before quickly running out. Boom signaled to Trickee who still holding Branch ran back to the tree. They all quickly had to run out back through the tunnels as some Bergen's have started to try and pry open the brittle cage.
Branch was starting to just fall behind when Synth scooped him up. It surprised him but he held on tightly as the sound of the Bergen's faded away.
In another universe alone in his room….a grey techno troll put a hand to his chest…almost as if feeling a ghost. A ghostly familiar warmth against his chest..
Chapter Text
John was working as he burned the midnight oil. He had a lot that he was trying not to think about as he worked. A pile of dead mice, frogs, and small birds were around him. Various containers, terrariums, and labels. Currently he had a mouse on the desk in front of him under the magnifying glass. He's drawn a new rune and he's pinned the mouse too. A charged crystal ready in one gloves hand as he made sure everything was ready.
He pressed it to their chest and the rune lit up as the magic was funneled quickly into its body. The pinned carcass jumped and writhed. The timer started when the magic came to a stop. Open eyes though unfocused were revealed from closed lids. A tiny chest was breathing rapidly as that tail flailed. Squeaks were heard in protest and confusion. When the timer hit 30 seconds it came to a halt. The mouse laid dead again.
He removed his gloves as he logged the experiment results. He glanced back at his set up and the various other critters. Some were breathing yet laid dead and unresponsive to outside stimulation. Some still twitched from etched runes into their bodies..
He heard a knock at the door from the top of the steps. Clay called his name making him check the time. Viva and their guest were still here at this hour. King Trollex was in Branch's newly decorated room. He found his little photo album and had been scanning a particular page in its contents.
“Meeting the family.”
In bright bold letters on the top. Branch and Synth taking pictures on the caterbus to Techno Reef. To photos of Branch Synth and Trollex all together hanging out. Some even had their parents together and Laguna. His baby brother looked so happy, he couldn't remember the last time he'd seen him smile like that.
Looked like his counterpart had a good relationship with Branch too. If the various board games or snippets of the two interacting were anything to go by. He smiled, finding the fond memories and moments pleasant to think of. He still didn't like Trollstopia. It was so bad Laguna left Trollstopia early on to remain home at the reef. She's still currently there having not wanted to come with him…
They should be back tomorrow, he wonders what they're doing as of now.
Branch was snuggled sweetly back against Synth’s chest Synth asleep with his arm around him. Trickee was awake whispering to the other's. It had been only for a moment, yes, but singing and dancing with Branch was so fun..!
The others were nodding, some more tired than others. Boom had a thoughtful expression on his face before he asked…
“Do you think our counterparts get to feel that everyday..?” Boom asked, staring up at the tent's roof.
There was a silence and a pause of consideration. A quiet one as they all thought to themselves before falling asleep.
Poppy was listening to Viva fret and talk as the leaders all had gathered. They all had returned by that morning just in time to present the capsule. Branch opened it carefully, fiddling with it a bit before it opened. A protective glass tube was in the center and the pink pop string inside.
“Wait grandpa left instructions?!” Branch exclaimed seeing on the inside of the armored shell of the container was etched in writing.
That would have been so fucking helpful during the Rock- pocalpse. There's a cancellation and even a counter spell!! Even various other ways to use the string! He could string a bow with it?!
John took it for further study as Viva held the pink string. She marveled at the glittering artifact in her hands. Trollex silently put a hand on his younger brother's shoulder. To his relief he didn't shrug or shoo him off. He gently placed his hand on his. Synth was ok and that made him smile a bit more.
Branch after being hugged and checked up on by Floyd was escorted out as a meeting took place. He walked with Floyd home hand in hand making him chuckle. When Floyd looked at him over his shoulder he mentioned how funny it was that they were holding his hand as if he was a kid again. Floyd chuckled too as they finally got back home. Branch was gonna go head up to his room when Spruce put his hands over his eyes. Carefully he and Floyd walked Branch up into his new room.
When he saw it he gasped at how cool it was and teared up seeing it all.
They had gotten and added fairy lights for him around his ceiling. He had a leaf throw blanket over his bed full of pillows and comfy covers. A new TV and radio and dark wood desk and dresser. He loved it so much he hugged them both as he squealed. Soon they were wearing face masks and watching TV.
Floyd and Branch were brushing Spruce's hair. Spruce was yapping away about the tea behind the sets before Johnny came home. He had come in suddenly, surprising the three. Before Branch could react in one swift movement the oldest had pushed him back onto his back. He pressed a crystal to his chest that made it glow. He didn't have a moment to question before he's ruthlessly tickled. He's left laughing as John retreats just as fast as he came in. Spruce didn't trust that and quickly followed as Floyd is left confused. He goes to see Clay about the meeting as Branch slowly recovers.
John was scanning through the pink crystal to scan through Branch's relationships. He can't believe he never thought of this sooner. But upon reuniting with some of his bounty hunting and adventuring friends as well as seeing all of the royals gathered he realized he didn't know Branch's relationships to each.
He wasted no time checking the red crystals. This time instead of like memories these were romantic Crystal's. Anytime Branch felt attraction or romance to a person the crystal shards would be red. Of course naturally most were Synth making his heart flutter and stop. Some were Poppy as he knew as well already. But to his surprise there were more. And not just any trolls but trolls Branch will and have met again. Hickory was in there, no surprise especially after Branch witnessed him tearing a log apart hear handed to make firewood. But to see Tresillo, Tambora and Marimba at the same time was shocking. Kim Petite made her own appearance in some as well. He had a small boy crush on Ablaze, Trickee, Boom, and Hype! Another small crush on Holly Darling as they were making pies together. It really threw him for a loop to see Queen Barb in there too.
“….. He's… got a unique taste.” He cleared his throat looking at the pieces.
“He likes strong and sensitive people. Noted.” Spruce smirked suddenly on board.
Oh if the opportunity ever presents itself he's gonna tease the little guy so hard. Chaz snorted a bit, already seeing how Branch's face would flush embarrassed. Clay was not impressed however with his brother's choice when he noticed something….
Branch was in the kitchen while his brothers had disappeared downstairs. He didn't quite have good vibes about the workshop. So he started making dinner when he heard the front door. He was surprised to see Synth but he smiled and welcomed him in as he was working. Synth was half listening surprised Branch was making a classic Techno dinner. The way he was smiling looking up at him and the cute little apron on…
Branch didn't know how to respond to suddenly being kissed.
Chapter Text
Trollex was up late when Synth returned suddenly. He was staying in a guest space since his arrival close by to techno lagoon. He was going over some notes when Synth plopped on the couch. He had that expression Trollex knew all too well growing up.
“...What did you do?” The king wasn't gentle about asking to come over quickly.
“I kissed him.” Synth admitted softly.
He had gently cupped the pop troll's face before stealing a kiss. They had held it for a moment as he savored the feeling before his brain registered what they had done. He had pulled away and the two locked eyes before he left as suddenly as he had kissed him.
“You just walked out?!” Trollex exclaimed in disbelief.
“I panicked!!” Synth shouted as he buried his head in his hands.
Branch was just as stunned as he laid in bed that night. He hadn't told his brothers- his brother's counterparts. They were busy talking in whispers at dinner and asking him questions. Pointed questions about Synth and his friends' counterparts. If any of them were weird or anything interesting had happened on the trip.
Suddenly as if remembering something Spruce perked up. When he brought him that coffee and his bag the photographer got an amazing shit that got put on the magazine. So they wanted to invite Branch back for some more.
However Spruce had an idea. If he can get Branch married- likely to Synth - he'd have to stay. He may stop looking to go home entirely if something like that happened. What better way to get your little brother out there than by showing him off? Clay didn't know of that angle but butted in offering to show Branch around his line of work. After all, the kings and queens would love to meet him.
“Viva wants to thank you too for getting the string.” Clay said softly, petting his head.
And after that they went off to bed. Branch was still reeling as he recalled the sensation. It had felt so warm and familiar yet so foreign and distant. It felt wrong but he wanted more. He wanted Synth, his Synth, not his counterpart and a world that wasn't his. He wanted his sweet glowfish back.
In another universe Synth was hyperventilating after waking up. His brother and Laguna were talking quietly when they were startled by a thud. He had come stumbling into the halls out of breath. He was frantic as he struggled with his words as they hurried to his sides.
Ever since he had gone grey his health has taken a turn. According to John, Lownote and Branch's journal's they all concluded it was normal to get sick after losing all color. Cramps, nightmare's, sudden rise in anxiety were normal. But Laguna and Trollex weren't so sure especially as Synth brokenly sobbed and clung to them. Something was wrong.
But between sobs and Synth coming in and out of consciousness there wasn't much to know or do. Trollex rubbed his brother's back as he mumbled and muttered something.
It was always about Branch. It must have been a nightmare. They're getting worse and he's terrified for his baby brother. Laguna was checking his temperature again as she brought over his dear pet. He held his bird as he leaned against Trollex for support.
They had put any ceremony for Branch on hold and hadn't called anything yet. But between everyone they all knew any chance of return was slim…
Poppy, Lownote and Synth were both taking it the hardest out of them all. Poppy was in and out of both denial and acceptance. Lownote despite having been the first to acknowledge Branch may be dead is still…
Still looking for something to prove him wrong.
He's searching, pleading silently for answers. Why had the gate suddenly opened then collapsed? Where could he have gone? He had initially searched nearby timelines. Then he broadened his search before searching again. Branch hasn't been scanned yet in the void which is good ..
He searched catalogs of trolls in hold or funk care for multiverse travel. Sifting through logs and logs and requesting universal access to certain files and putting in dozens of missing reports.
In another universe he was sitting the exact same way over his computer desktop. Lownote rubbed his eyes as he sighed. He should be working on that gate repair. He really should. But something was bugging him immensely. He's seen the bunker as it finished unfolding and sculpting itself. The tools, the resources, the rooms, all of it. Branch made such a huge difference and was so impactful to just not exist for no reason.
There had to be a reason. Branch clearly hadn't wiped himself out of existence. And it seems his home universe was still active and alive. He could message and reach out. He absolutely could…
But he went digging. He had to know. Some accounts get restricted for various reasons. Outsiders can see into and what's ahead for them. Which is.. problematic at times…
Hence why he never knew he was missing a fundamental person in his universe. The system would hide that from him. He had an idea,... An awful one. But he tried to logging with another password..
It took several tries before he managed to do so. He looked up his own universe to see what he couldn't normally see. His eyes widened as he read the report.
Apocalyptic….
Chapter Text
Branch was shaken awake early. He typically wakes early but not that morning. He had been up thinking about his situation but he didn't tell Spruce that. He didn't wanna talk about it but got dressed into ‘something quick’ as recommended.
He realized why when they got to the photo shoot. He was reintroduced to this universe Satin and Chenille. He was never put through the ringer like this before. He was in and out of outfits in blinks of an eye as the two and their crew got him photo ready. Spruce giggled seeing him wide eyed and confused before they started actually taking pictures. The entire crew had fun with Branch with them. It was like a fresh brand new canvas with a beautiful pair of eyes and big cute ears.
The camera loved him just as much as they posed and took several photos. He was gonna take him out as well to see fans before Clay got him with the kismet guards.
Meeting all the royals again was a second whirlwind he wasn't ready for. Especially with Trollzart who grabbed his face to study and interrogate him. Can you blame him after everything he and his nation was put through? He wants to make sure this dimension hopper wasn't trouble. Granted Dante and his friend Minuette both vouched for him. Delta was skeptical and standoffish but Holly had a nervous smile. Synth wouldn't look him in the eye but Trollex greeted him softly. It was strange to see this version of his boyfriend's brother. Quieter and seemingly almost awkward around him.
Barb was another curve ball. She was quieter and wearing a hoodie and baggy jeans. She had her hood over her signature Mohawk and seemed to be…. hiding? Like she thought she shouldn't be in the room- oh ….
That's exactly what she's thinking and feeling. The world tour ended differently and of course that impacted her differently too. Riff was rigid and still staring at him angrily. Val elbowed him, seeing it on behalf of Branch.
The funk trolls were quiet and gathered close. That was in itself unsettling too in its own right. Essence won't look at him and Quincy won't take his eyes off him. Lownote would look at him but in glances as he and Darnell whispered quietly back and forth. Something was going on between them but he wasn't sure exactly what it was.
Viva had him give his side of the expedition…
And that was it. He quietly left the room when he wasn't asked any more questions. He had finished recounting what had happened and the differences between his world and there's.
He filled in some questions he thought would come automatically. Like if he thought reconciliation was possible with the Bergen's. His ultimate answer was a no but he did mention that Bridget was a lot more emotionally aware than Gristle in his universe so if it is something they'd like to look into further observation would be advised.
So now he's outside by the stage near the meeting room. Outside were various guards and escorts waiting and guarding the area. Most notably being the bounty hunter's much to his clear curiosity. Hickory and Dickory was with Rooster and Gust. He could see the Reggaeton trio chatting with some funk guards. He was looking for the girls when he heard giggling. Turns out he didn't have to look for them too much.
He was quickly surrounded as the girls closed in.
“Hey cutie. Your name Branch?” Wani asked, looking him up and down.
She'll admit he's pretty cute regardless of some of his scars. He's a cute blue color and he was wearing a big red oversized sweater. A big pretty one with embroidered gems and little red flowers and green leaves. With black shorts on that barely peek out from underneath. Red leg warmers that matched the sweater top completed the look.
Before Branch could retort, a hand found his shoulder. Trickee had come to intervene, ready to go with a smile as he answered for him. A look over his shoulder confirmed the rest of the group was here too as they broke up the circle. Ablaze couldn't believe they were doing this. Looked like Branch though already understood what was going down. The Kpop sister's loved a playful competitive sing and dance off.
At this point Branch didn't think it could get any crazier when Hype asked him if he had a song…
Saja boy's - Idol.
“Pray for me now
Pray for me now (Dies irae) {Day of wrath}
Pray for me now (Illa) {Bad}
Pray for me now (Vos solve in) {You pay in}
Pray for me now (Favilla) {Spark}
Pray for me now (Maledictus) {Cursed}
Pray for me now (Erus) {I am}
Pray for me now (In flamas) {It's burning}
Pray for me now (Eternum) {Eternal}
I'll be your idol”
The chant got everyone's attention as they turned to the gathered group.
“Keeping you in check (Uh), keeping you obsessed (Uh)
Play me on repeat, 끝없이 {eternally} in your head
Anytime it hurts, play another verse
I can be your sanctuary~”
Ablaze started after memorizing Branch's lyrics starting to feel that energy Trickee had mentioned. The sister's looked intrigued seeing they incorporated their language into the lyrics.
“Know I'm the only one right now (Now)
I will love you more when it all burns down
More than power, more than gold (Yeah)”
Branch's line ended almost too soon.
“I'm thе only one who'll love your sins
Feel the way my voicе gets underneath your skin!!!~~
Listen 'cause I'm preachin' to the choir
Can I get the mic' a little higher?
Gimme your desire
I can be the star you rely on
내 황홀의 취해 {Intoxicated with my ecstasy} you can't look away (Hey)
Don't you know I'm here to save you
Now we runnin' wild
Yeah, I'm all you need, I'ma be your idol!*
The band sang as they danced in unison together. They were unaware of the gathering listeners and the rolling camera's hidden among the reporters in the bushes.
Chapter Text
Branch sat down with his head in his hands. His cheeks still hot as his ears twitched and fluttered. Video of his song and friends was making its rounds. He initially wrote that song for the Kpop sister's. He will admit he liked how it sounded with kismet but it seemed to bode over a little too well.
John was teasing him as he chuckled. Everyone was talking about it. Everyone was singing it. Everyone was watching it again and again. Spruce was having the opposite reaction. Granted yes he wanted Branch to get out there for the idea he'd stay if he found love here. But he could see and tell it's about to get celebrity level out of hand. He's already getting calls and messages about getting Branch more on camera before the magazines even roll out. Some with themes or company's Spruce did not want Branch to get involved in.
Or with certain people.
Synth was silent as Trollex listened to the song during the meetings break. He was seething with rage at one little bit.
“Living in your minds now, to late cause your mine now!~”
It was during that last line Branch spotted a camera. He flushed embarrassed and covered his face and ran off. He stumbled and ran straight into Hickory who held him a moment too long and had faintly started to blush when the two made eye contact. When more cameras and trolls appeared Hickory pulled him back into his chest before Kismet got involved with the other guards. It was that part that made him tighten his grip.
The way Hickory held Branch as he hid his face away…
Branch of course separated from him quickly with a small thank you and hurried off. He ran this way and that quickly shaking off paparazzi and his own sense of direction. He didn't take in consideration that he hadn't realized where he was going.
He walked around trying to avoid detection. It was a lot harder than he remembered before he remembered his bunker. He took a sharp right before bumping into someone.
Barb stumbled back holding her own head as Branch apologized. He had not seen her nor did he expect too. Barb apologized too but before she knew it. The two were heading towards Branch's bunker after grabbing a pizza. Branch wanted to wait till this game blew over. And Barb said she was laying low until it was time to go home. So Branch invited her though awkwardly to come hide with him. The bunker was still relatively unknown aside from his friends - his counterpart friends. When he saw the door a sinking feeling fell into his gut.
As he feared the inside of the bunker was complete. The familiar warm dug out yellow glow of lights. The smoothed down walls with photos or art hung up. Shelves with books and random furniture filled the entrance. They sat on the couch together as they ate in silence. Branch was solemn as he stared down his home's details.
The bunker finished, meaning his counterpart truly didn't exist. The multiverse was adapting to him and was trying hard to put evidence of his existence into itself. On the bright side as Poppy would put it, it's not how it was before he regained his color's. When Barb asked him what he was thinking about he told her. How when he was grey and paranoid he had completely guarded himself. This room used to hold endless traps and had not a single light. He had an endless amount of locks and chains barring the door.
“I was not…. The best.” He chuckled to himself as Barb cracked a smirk.
She was surprised by his confession as she got him to talk about stories. Fun ones, sad ones, and random chaos following Poppy. Branch got up and walked to the elevator. He held his hand over it and debated for a moment. A pit formed painfully at the bottom of his stomach. He was in his home full of memories and reflections of himself…
Yet it all felt so much like a lie and no longer like a wonder. He couldn't beat the idea of going further than the entrance den and seeing signs of his Synth. Oh god now that he thought about it the more his chest aches. All of his Synth's things could be down there. From his bird's various perches, to his assortment of knick-knacks and jackets. It made the kiss he shared with this Synth so sour. He kissed someone who wasn't his lover.
But if they weren't down there? He couldn't tell if that would be worse or better. That the universe can understand his love for the troll that wasn't present… or if it was blind to it and didn't show any evidence for the man who lived with him.
Barb saw him frozen before a tear rolled down his cheek. She stood up and hugged him gently to which he reciprocated. They stayed there for a while playing games and getting to know each other. Clay found them with Synth in tow later that afternoon. Clay was relieved he was ok and was surprised by his company. Synth raised a brow as his eyes darkened. What was Barb doing here with him..?
AND WHY WAS HE INVITING HER TO DINNER?!
Through whatever act of God or sheer luck Trollex already got them both a foot through the door. Floyd was drowning in the kitchen before Branch came in. Branch sent him off seeing him struggling with the cookbook and Grandma. He pulled Floyd from the stovetop and gave him a cold soda and sat him out on the couch. Grandma was a bit tricky, she was fussy and upset Floyd wouldn't let her help in a kitchen she's cooked in for years. So Branch put her on dessert and appetizers. He kept it relatively simple for tonight blending a bit of all three cultures.
Spruce sets the table as Floyd takes a moment as John was talking to King Trollex. Synth was swirling a drink on his hand a little agitated. Barb next to him is not certain what to do with herself when Branch calls her into the kitchen. He tried to call Trollex but Trollex sent Synth instead. He came in just as Branch spoon fed something to Barb.
“Oh! Yeah that's really good you nailed it!” Barb was pleasantly surprised by the flavor.
Branch smiled as he got a second fork for Synth. He got him a bite and blew on it gently before offering the sample nervously. Synth flushed as Branch checked the temperature by tapping it gently against his lips. It had almost looked like he had kissed it. Branch hadn't realized how intimate he was on autopilot due to his-
He lost train of thought for a moment as Synth took a ginger bite from his hands. He made eye contact and lingered a moment a bit to long as he tasted it gingerly.
Chapter Text
…Synth was pacing the room alone in the dark. The nightmares keep appearing to be real and more lucid each night. He could hear every sound more clearly and he could see his Dubstep more and more.
Just the other night he could taste one of his darlings signature dishes. He could see him tentatively blow before feeding him. Was it him? It had to be who else would he be feeding so tentatively? But why did it not feel like it was him? The way Branch looked at this ‘him’ wasn't right. Like he was hesitant.his Dubstep is hesitant and cautious a lot but something about this was wrong.
His Dubstep was out there alive and in trouble. He could hear Laguna and Trollex whispering down the hall. The worry and concerns about him are evident. It pained him but he had to go speak to Lownote. He tucked himself away quietly using a secret tunnel. He carefully made his way to the funk trolls ship. You can imagine his startlement when he bumped into Poppy. She was wearing a hoodie and very clearly was also sneaking around.
The two held eye contact before quickly going in to try and get access to the portal room in the funk ship. They once more bumped into someone they weren't expecting.
Lownote himself did not look any better than the three of them. He mostly banned anyone from the portals still unclear of the cause. He was worried about a possible second portal collapsing or malfunction. Inside the locked portal room after the three gave each other silent agreements they found four more trolls.
Ablaze, Boom, Hype and Trickee stared back wide-eyed at the three who caught them having broken in. They had a very peculiar almost sacrificing ritual set up.
“...Why?” Lownote asked, confused by this approach.
“We thought it was worth a shot if this had you stumped.” Hype chuckled nervously as he put out the lit candle.
Truth be told they were just gonna cycle through various gods or myths till something happened or they ran out. Poppy asked if they had any luck as Synth fidgeted. They all seem to virtually have no idea how to go about this. That is till Lownote fired up a portal. Took a deep breath and turned to them all.
“When we enter this dimension. You're not to touch, leave my side, or do anything you wouldn't do in a waiting room.” Lownote warned as they all gathered.
“What's out there..?” Poppy asked, hesitant of the swirl of colors.
“Many years ago before all the funk trolls were connected my multiverse travel or even built the first funk mother ship… an explorer found the core..” Lownote explained softly preparing himself.
The core was the very center of the universe and held every answer. Every little thread of knowledge and every shrivel of magic. It was what centered the Multiverse, Connections, & Corrections authority. It's very complex and hard to explain and quite frankly even he doesn't know all the details. But countless if not endless bits of knowledge are stored, protected and used by only the highest judges.
“They keep order amongst the universe. They set the rules and laws for us all to follow. Without them worlds can shatter and fade into a void.” Lownote explained check-in over his files.
If anyone had answers it would be them. If anyone had a way to help them, it would be them.
“Why didn't you mention this before?!” Boom asked as Synth took it all in.
“Cause they don't like to get involved with these matters. Thousands of requests go unmet or even unheard of by the judges. Most are then denied for the sake of balance.” Lownote checked the folder again.
He needed to make this case as compelling as possible to get their attention. He stepped inside and was slowly followed in by Synth. It looked unreal as galaxies lined the walls and gold pillars held up intricate architecture. A large front desk with a troll that looked almost entirely made of white. She saw them immediately free for the moment. Almost a thousand front desk assistants lined the large ring.
“Universal code and designation or ID?” She asked behind the counter.
Lownote simply gave her a laminated lanyard. She scanned it quietly as Poppy looked around in awe. She greeted Lownote by his full name and universal title and number. When she asked what was the problem and he barely said anything other than Branch was missing she made him pause. The group looked amongst themselves as she pulled up something on her screen.
“No no that can't be right… your universe has deviated from its path and trajectory. Where exactly did Branch go missing?” She asked him raising a brow.
She had thought Lownote lost him on an adventure somewhere. When she heard gateway collapse sucking him in she slammed the alarm button. A hover of some kind came quickly.
“Judge 13. We have a code B red.” The front desk woman said sternly to the driver who was only a pile of slime.
They tipped their hat off to her and helped Poppy into a seat. Synth asked Lownote what was code B red? Lownote didn't know as Kismet filed on worriedly. This sounded like dead troll urgency or a felony kind of code. They were driven for only 5 seconds but has warped to a whole new location. Synth felt sick but was quickly ushered off the vehicle. Lownote opened the door designated for judge 13. Like the front desk woman this being let off light and seemed to have been one massive eye.
“Greetings Lownote and friends. I have been informed that a severe, maybe dangerous situation has occurred.” Judge 13 said softly though his tone held a bit of worry.
Chapter Text
The powerful Judge 13 had them all sit down round his desk.
“I noticed you have many of your friends with you today so I'll let them ask questions before we start so everyone is on the same page.” They said calmly, taking a seat.
The first ones that came naturally. Why were they here? They're looking for Branch and what exactly is this place? They're in the multiverse that is essentially like a help center or a lobby of a hotel where each room is another universe. The halls were those voids that Poppy and the snack pack had once encountered. They can not enter the rooms from the lobby but they can call or see what is in each one.
Why had Lownote not come here sooner? Well a lot of universes are told to try and sort out issues themselves. Mostly because canon events or events that must happen aren't to be interfered with or there could be consequences. Not to mention upon countless universes there are many other issues they have to sort and handle based on the level of crisis. They can't tell you as an agreed-upon law what must or will happen as meddling within a universe's timelines can be a delicate or destructive matter. However others are able to see as well so they know what universe they're about to travel to and what to expect. Lownote was starting to fear that if Branch fell into the void it must have been an inescapable event. Therefore coming would have been useless.
“However. Reviewing your case I can tell you with certainty that Branch being removed from your universe was not supposed to happen. Especially in the manner you had described.” The judge said looking at the computer facing solely himself.
This isn't a matter for the core to answer. However the mirror hall will allow a good viewing of where Branch may be. Synth took front row view.
A bit of color returned to his face seeing as the dark glass lit up. Dubstep, his Dubstep was on the other side of it in the bunker. He looked… uneased.
“Why do we have to be down here..?” Branch asked as he looked around.
“I figured it would help get you….more accustomed and comfortable I suppose.” Lownote said quietly.
It wasn't a full on lie. But if they're to avoid the apocalyptic fate he needed Branch here. He had seemed so happy when the bunker first appeared but now it looks like a different story. Something had shifted his attitude greatly and that could become a problem. If worse comes to worse and he has to permanently relocate Branch into their world he'll do it. But it'll be easier and more humane if Branch were to come to accept this as his new reality in a literal sense.
Branch stood in his and Synth's bedroom holding himself as he sat on the bed across the mirror on his vanity. It feels so empty but it looks exactly like how they've left it. Little did he know his lover was watching him through the mirror.
His glow fish watched as he slowly buried himself in blankets and hugged the pillow Synth usually laid on. He watched helplessly as his poor Dubstep cried quietly clinging to it. His attention was quickly grabbed at the newcomer. Have you ever seen a punk looking jacked version of yourself? Weird feeling. But his alarm raised as he saw him getting closer.
He watched in horror as they ran their hand across their back and to his hip. Leading Branch to come sit against him. The way he held his distressed love against his chest as he pet him softly.
“THAT PUNK ASS BITCH IS MAKING A MOVE ON MY DUBSTEP!” Synth yelled, making everyone jump back.
Techno trolls get possessive and jealous over mates. It's a natural occurrence. But they never expected to see Synth get jealous and rightfully so at his own self technically. This stranger had Branch by the waist and his fingers were gently caressing his jaw and ear.
His imposter was startled to their surprise as if he could hear him. Then as if he could see him through the mirror he stared. What felt like a lifetime was a second. As a sinister smile tugged at their lips. He pulled Branch close and nuzzled the top of his head. He rubbed Branch’s ear gently just like how his copy had done in that memory.
Branch stiffened before melting into him further. He sniffled both pained and in a small bit of pleasure. It was like he was here with him. Holding him gently as he soothed his aching heart and overflowing mind. But it wasn't the same soft touch as before. No, the hands were a bit rougher against his skin. He wasn't wearing Synth's cologne. There was no bird rattling its cage for a treat.
No no this wasn't Synth and it's wrong. He's in his and Synth's private space. He's in their bed with him! He couldn't. He shouldn't be here. He got up silently but he was saved from having to give an excuse as he's called away. Synth stared at the mirror as he went. Smiling as he took a cologne bottle off the vanity. His copy won't miss it or would be needing it after all. He left smiling as he could hear the faint angry screams of a techno troll enraged.
Branch wiped his eyes coming to see Poppy and Creek. They were asking about some of the machines. He happily talked about it and its purpose, showing them how it worked.
Synth got a taste of his own medicine when he saw how Creek had an arm around Branch as the three of them leaned against the safety bar. Poppy was against his shoulder even closer with him in-between the two of them. He felt his eye twitch a bit in agitation. Poppy excitedly bounced on her heels as something finished below them before hurrying down a flight of steel stairs. Branch and Creek followed her down. This particular machine, despite its size, made gum of some sort.
“Herbal gum?” Creek asked curiously, picking one up.
“Kinda. It's infused with magic herbs to give small doses of the magic's benefits in controlled-” Branch noticed Poppy was already chewing on a piece.
Typically eating a plant raw could be dangerous and for animals it's like getting a video game buff. So it's not necessarily crazy but the herbs and magic plant Branch put in was energizing.
Combine that with any Poppy he'd imagine disaster. He was surprised that she was calm for almost a second. Suddenly she was vibrating at an impossible speed racing around like a child on sugar.
Chapter Text
Branch chased Poppy into the workshop. She's been running wild all throughout Trollstopia! She hadn't been able to stop or slow down at all and had been out of control. Finally she seemed to crash exhausted against the cold hard floor. Branch sighed in relief as he hurried to her side.
She wasn't hurt and hopefully she won't stick anything else in her mouth when they-!?
He noticed the strange tarps over the various compiles of stuff underneath. He tilted his head curious as he made sure Poppy was ok before lifting the tarp. He gasped as he fell backwards, stumbling. John saw him from the top of the workshop's stairs.
Branch was staring in horror of the cages with limp and dead animals. He started to cry and hyperventilate when he saw a little bird with familiar feathers. That was Synth's bird. Synth's bird was dead in the bottom of a cafe without their favorite toys or bedding. Laying lifeless on its back with its neck at a scary angle.
He teared up in shock and horror as John and Creek ran down. Creek flinched horribly as a knot formed in his stomach.
“John… John what have you done to them?! What have you done to Button's?!” Branch shrieked in horror seeing the poor animals.
Yes he was terrified of Button's. Yes Button's was already a crazy old bird. But to see them dead with various patching and stitching was horrifying. John pulled him away as Creek grabbed Poppy.
John tried to explain but Branch started to tear off more tarps. John could only stand silently as Branch looked in horror.
“HOW MANY ARE HERE?!” Branch screamed horrified as he saw the piles of cages and tanks of decaying animals.
Some were missing chunks and seemed to almost be breathing. Moving yet with glassy eyes and uneven postures. Some laid lifelessly yet clearly sewn from mismatched parts of other animals.
“Branch… let me explain.” John said softly, trying to keep him calm.
“Explain what?! John what have you been doing -!” Branch stopped himself as he realized what it was.
He should have really known. He really should have figured this had to do with it. John had a guilty look in his eyes seeing the realization dawn on him. All of this madness was to bring him back from the dead. A man who never even had a grave or a corpse as far as he knew.
“What …..what even is the purpose of this?” Branch fumbled, stepping back.
“I can explain..” John said calmly, hands up trying to keep him calm.
He could see, however, how Branch was doing the math in his head. His ear flicked like clay does and beads of sweat like Floyd. His eyes scanning over it all like Spruce would have done as well. Yes his grandfather didn't even have a body to revive like any of his trial methods. However if he could figure out what makes life tick back from the dead with these animals he could start from there. He could then find the way to bring back his soul and all from the afterlife without the body maybe.
“They were all donated and already dead when they arrived..” John started already seeing how Branch was not liking this.
No one would. It's a gruesome image and the number of animals in a nightmare experiment to most. Creek himself was backing away towards the door as Branch only saw more and more warnings. He saw the ruins, the tools and the coolers. He didn't wait, he ran quickly managing to dodge John and up the stairs. He ran to go find Lownote with John calling for him hot on his heels. Val and Barb saw him running and hurried to catch up.
He suddenly disappeared around the corner to their surprise but hurried on ahead. Branch was in shock as the hand over his mouth moved away. Marimba looked at him curiously to know why he was running. He thanked her and told her he was looking for Lownote. She pointed the way and was surprised when he gave her a hug before running off.
Lownote had his own issues at hand in the funk ship. He, Essence, and Quincy were shutting down any possible way for the outside multiverse to get in. Until they can change their universe’s fate no chances can be taken. Especially when they were alerted to another universe attempting to enter.
Lownote was using every override he knew as Synth paces frantically behind him. Poppy gathered the brothers and all of their friends.
“He's blocking us out!!” Lownote growled, growing frantic.
“He's what?!” Synth shrieked, panicking himself as his brother held him back.
Another universe is trying to hold Branch hostage. He's alive thank the Lord and doesn't seem to be hurt. But something didn't make any sense.
“Why are they locking us out?! What are they trying to do?!” Holly asked horrified as she anxiously dragged her hoof against the ground.
“It's an apocalyptic world. The other me must think he can rewrite it if he has a Branch in his universe!” Lownote said as he slammed his fist down on the machine.
The dangerous world's Essence and Quincy are acting to. All portals are closed and are to remain closed for further instance. They triggered the hazard locks to keep everything out and everything from inside from escaping.
This won't work. Whatever the other Lownote is thinking will not work. Many have tried this route before back years and years ago. This is why they had the failsafe protocols over apocalyptic worlds. They're going to drag Branch down with them if nothing else. Rhythm was pulling up any information of the universe. Blues was trying to hook up a gateway to try and force open a window. Maybe they can negotiate. Try to talk reason to get them to stand down.
Synth was the first to appear in front of the window to see inside the other universe's funk ship. A tattooed version of his friend immediately trying to shut it off.
“Stop you maniac! You can't do this to hi-!” Lownote yelled before their attention turned to the door.
Branch ran in and skidded to a halt seeing the window. He saw his Synth. Yes grey, and disheveled and far from his better days. But he knew that was his Synth.
He tried to run forward but a tattooed arm grabbed a gun in the fleeting moment. Synth screamed in terror as he saw his lover hit the floor unconscious.
Chapter Text
Synth's heart stopped the second his blueberry hit the ground. His eyes didn't move from his darling even as the window was forced closed. The image wouldn't leave his head. Trollex noticed his brother's rigid paralyzed like body in the silence.
“Synth…?” He said ever so gently reaching for his younger brother's shoulder.
He stopped mid way when the grey scales darkened impossibly so. His brother's scales became black as the little glow from his hair and glowing hands went out completely. His fins not only raised but they sharpened and grew in size. His hands flexed as claws started to form and grow right in front of them.
On the other side, dropping his smoking ray gun Lownote started at Branch. It was a memory wiping ray, no harm was done. Branch had seen too much and he needs to resort to drastic measures. Barb, Val and John came in and they all panicked seeing Branch on the ground. John stood rigid as Lownote turned his attention to him.
“I'll explain, but while he's unconscious…John I need your permission.” Lownotes tone was grave as he paged Rhythm and Blues.
They'll rewrite Branch's memories. They have to make him stay. They need to make sure he believes he's always been here. He'll only change what he needs too. Barb protested on behalf of Branch's autonomy. But when pressed she had to back down. Loose a friend or loose the whole world as Lownote explained.
John looked at Branch as he laid limp. He nodded with his throat to dry to speak. He didn't stick around for the operation, only to tell his brother's what's happening and what's needed..
Spruce tucked him in, after everything was finalized. He had changed him into comfortable pajamas and pet his head. He smiled in his sleep softly that made Spruce's heart twist.
Clay didn't know what to expect when they all woke up that morning. Branch was making breakfast and packing lunch. He was dressed in brown short overalls and a green shirt. He smiled when he saw Clay and happily told him good morning. He had his lunch packed and breakfast ready to go for him. Strawberry and banana yogurt parfait in this to go thing he got but never used. Yet now it was like it was a part of his everyday routine as Branch handed it to him.
“... Is everything alright? Do you need some coffee?” Branch asked as he saw his brother pause there in the kitchen.
He put the coffee pot on confused before giving Grandma her French toast sticks. He took the peeled fruit from her to cut up later.
“Yeah. Yeah everything is alright.” Clay said softly, smiling.
Branch smiled seeing it as he continued to prepare food. He was getting a chicken salad for Spruce with a side of chopped fruit with some honey drizzled. He packed it and some hot coffee for Spruce with his favorite mints. Spruce came down just in time as Branch gave him his breakfast of eggs and avocado toast. He packed his lunch into his duffel bag as Floyd slowly came down. He wasn't sure if Branch should be up yet but..
Branch spotted him first and told him to come sit down and eat as he hugged Clay goodbye. He gave him some diced fruit and french toast. As he was setting down the plate and asking if Floyd wanted a smoothie he realized Floyd hadn't moved. He looked back up at the steps concerned to still see Floyd. Spruce hadn't moved and froze in his chair.
“Floyd…. Floyd, why are you crying..? Are you hurt..?” Branch asked tentatively concerned as he stepped closer to the stairs.
Floyd's words were caught in his throat as a hand clasped his shoulder.
“I got this.” John said softly, pulling Floyd close.
Branch's smile of relief pulled at his heart as he nodded. He told them to take their time and reminded John to come back up to eat lunch later. With that he stored away John's lunch in the fridge. He made smoothie's for him, Grandma, Floyd and for John his preferred coffee.
When they came back down Branch gave Floyd a hug. Floyd hugged him back in heavy silence. Branch quickly went on about his day. Starting to get clothes done and letting Grandma help. He'd give her small tasks to do or have her occupied with little hobbies or puzzles. Afterwards he stepped out with her to go for their morning walk as Floyd and John headed for work.
Branch was the youngest brother of the Brozone family at 25. He helped mostly manage their house and grandmother in her declining health. But he was also the official doomsday prepper. Helping prepare the village for large scale disasters.
A title Viva made official in review during his procedure. She checked up on him for Clay as they were walking and even came up to ask. Almost as if he had been here for ages he told her his plans. He would be checking the emergency escape tunnels under the village and make sure they're up to code as well as accessible. Then he'll be checking the supply emergency rations and farms as well.
He was confused why Viva suddenly hugged him. He hugged her back of course though his confusions remained. It was just any other day of work, nothing special. Branch sent her on her way making sure she was alright as he continued on his walk. His job wouldn't start till the afternoon. He waits till his brothers or until Floyd's home to switch with him before he goes off to do his job.
As he waved and said good morning to familiar faces he came across some familiar faces. His friends surrounded him and his grandma asked him how he was. Ablaze gave him a hug as Boom smiled at Grandma Rosiepuff. She liked these colorful bright soldiers. Very safe, reliable and protective so of course she starts talking and teasing Branch about dating one of them. And as if it was an everyday occurrence Branch chuckled and teased her back. But it wasn't an everyday thing, not to the ground of guardsmen. They shuffled flustered but Trickee did reach for his hand.
“Grandma, don't be silly. I already have a boyfriend, remember?” Branch chuckled unaware of the startlement of the four surrounding them.
Chapter Text
Synth was putting away his racing gear after practice with Val today. Though their practice was off and rigid. Val has been tense and quiet. A mix of anger, hurt, and scarily enough fear too. She just learned about the fact their future was set to deep dive into a hell they couldn't escape from. And on top of that almost impossibly more insane to rewrite a troll's memory.
Branch had done so much for them all. He doesn't deserve this, he didn't deserve anything happening at all. He's being forced into a life that wasn't his and abandoning his own. He had family and a lover waiting for him to come home. Real family, sure they hadn't been the greatest but what they're doing is no better…
What if it doesn't even work? What if they're just dragging him down with them all?
Synth hadn't said a damn thing uncertain how to feel. He didn't know what to say about it. He knows his best friend is upset but what can they do?
“Hi babe!” The cheerful chirp surprised them both.
Synth hardly had a chance to turn around before his heart stopped. A tender kiss placed against his lips as two hands excitedly grabbed his own. Branch smiled seeing his boyfriend and turned to Val with a smile. He was asking if she and Barb would like to come back over for dinner. However his words fell flat as they trailed off. He couldn't place that look Val was giving him before they held a moment of silence. Before he could ask if everything was alright she gave an excuse and hurried off.
She couldn't stand to see that concern, love, and tender look in his eyes looking at them. Branch watched her hurry away as he turned his attention to his boyfriend. Synth was quiet, unusually quiet actually. Branch met his eyes as he took a step back gingerly asking him if he was ok. You could imagine his surprise when he's suddenly picked up and pinned against the hood of the race car. Synth's cologne hit him like a brick as their lips met hungrily. The pop troll didn't resist blushing into the kiss as Synth held him close.
To Synth's delight Branch wrapped his arms around him. The pop troll relaxed as they wrapped their legs around his waist. His hair even went limp as melted to the kiss as his hands gripped his.
Synth didn't let up till they both needed air. He couldn't help but smile seeing the flustered face under him. A string of saliva connecting them as Branch softly pants for air. He kissed him again and again before holding his face into his chest.
Branch was his, actually fully his. He was his and his alone to love and hold. Branch hugged him back as he was picked up and held. He kissed Synth's neck as he nuzzled against his chest.
“You had me worried for a second…” Branch chuckled, placing a hand over the pixel heart.
He knew he had nothing to fear between the two. But the way they both looked at him had been too much. He liked to feel Synth's heart beat through his palm when he's held.
“Sorry, we were just thinking about some things.” Synth said softly as Branch relaxed.
Grandma Rosie was with Floyd at the moment so Branch was free. So he was happy to be taken to the techno lagoon and go to Synth's house. Synth had a surprise for him and he couldn't wait to show him. He did have to break down that copy of his copy’s nest. He didn't like it and didn't wanna run the chance of Branch finding it.
Branch was so happy to crawl inside getting the go ahead praising his nest. An articulate gesture between lovers. A safe space for them both to just exist. A secure area meant just for them. Synth joined him happily, kissing him gently as Branch hugged and cuddled him. Trading kisses as Branch nuzzled into his lover's chest. He was surrounded with the warmth of the nest underwater. His mask let off a steady hum as he was held to his boyfriend's chest.
There was a flash of movement behind his eyelids. He didn't understand it, it was like static for a moment. He closed his eyes again, the image wasn't any clearer.
But something was wrong. He couldn't band what but suddenly that loving hold felt wrong. Synth wasn't this warm in body temperature. Synth didn't always feel like this, did he? He looked at his wrist of dark leather and studded silver bracelets. Weren't those colorful neon and elaborate beads..?
Wasn't their nest smaller..? Didn't they have a nest before..
Flashes of his boyfriend's face race behind his eyes. It's the same face but… no something is wrong. Something is terribly wrong.
John was destroying his work. He couldn't help but think the same thing as he killed and discontinued and buried each specimen. He couldn't look past the face of terror Branch had. He had looked at him like he was a monster. Had he truthfully gone too far with his experiments…?
What other angle could he go at this? He's not sure but he needs to keep an eye on Branch. Branch was a great key apparently to keeping their world safe. If he wanted to bring back grandpa…
What if he really couldn't, had this search been nothing but madness? Could he have plunged them all into an apocalypse trying to play with death? The others knew yet they never saw much but disgusted disinterest. John rubbed his temples as he tried to stop his brain.
Barb and Val had been giving him side eyes and glares. He doesn't blame them but what choice did he have? Could you really ask him to give up his baby brother when they're all finally are starting to be a family again?
He came inside and he saw Floyd more relaxed and eased for once. He was having tea with Grandma with these cookies Branch made before going to see his boyfriend Synth.
Floyd was still giggling after seeing the dejected faces of the guards.
Chapter Text
Trollex was pacing as he held himself in thought. He didn't know if you could call it in thought as he had absolutely nothing. After a month and some days of Branch missing they had found him. After Synth had been slowly killing himself and drowning right before him, Branch was found. He just saw his friend's brother be shot and his brother go….Black.
He looked back at the reinforced tank of water holding his brother. He couldn't recognize Synth with the terrifying changes. The black scales, the enlarged fins and the bow growing spikes and spines coming from him.
This never happened before in Techno history. Branch had mentioned it briefly in his notebooks and There was a study in both country and Funk. A troll that has gone Black is a troll who's been brought past a breaking point of sanity. It's supposedly temporary but Trollex doubts it.
The moment he transformed after seeing Branch shot he went wild. Synth broke havoc trying to reopen the window and against various machines and anyone who tried to stop him. He was screaming this unreal scream as if he wasn't a troll anymore. He just kept screaming as he threw, clawed and punched the screens and surrounding machinery. He had yet to really calm down even in the tank he still swam in dangerous circles. Eyeing everyone up and clawing and ramming at the glass. Even attempting to bite it with large fangs he seemed to have grown overnight.
It was a horrifying thing to see what had happened to his brother. Trollex doesn't know how long this will last or if it'll even end at this rate. Synth keeps growing, changing, and worse even escalating with his temper.
He's angry, he's hurt and Trollex knows he's scared too. But he can't see past what his brother is becoming and he feels awful but…
Poppy came and held his hand. He gave her a hug as he cried. She was crying too, just as uncertain and scared for her best friend. Branch was alive, just as she hoped but he's in so much danger right now. Lownote said the gun doesn't kill but she's terrified of what they're going to do with him.
They've locked down and so many people are trying to crack the universe open again. Poppy is terrified after learning it's an apocalypse world too. What if the apocalypse starts in that universe with Branch inside? The only reassurance anyone can give her about that is that it hadn't happened yet but it was supposed to. The high universal authority was doing everything possible. They couldn't just crack the universe open without damaging it. The fail safe locks wouldn't budge without going through hoops of safety measures.
They couldn't tell them what they may find once they get past it all.
Lownote was trembling as he drank from his mug. He's been through extensive training for this matter. He's been to countless sessions preparing him for these things. Yet he was still being effected. When you see a reflection of yourself, someone who is you be so horrible and reckless you'd be affected too. You feel angry, disgusted, lost and so confused. Trying to reason how you as a person in any reality would stoop to this level. Lownote knows very well he is an educated and highly trained professional. He knows that Lownote is at least the same level as he is even if slightly different. But they were still the same being down to the core. The same person down to the cells in their bones.
Then comes the question of whether he'd do the same. He wouldn't, he never could do it. But that's hard to believe when you see yourself doing this exact thing. That it may have been possible for him to play as a cowardly bastard. To justify putting so many at risk for a hunch…
He sat his mug down, unable to drink. His glasses tucked in his boa as he held his face in his palms. The girls were worried watching him. Lownote was crumbling and they didn't know what to do to help him. Nothing they could say would make any of this easier. They're all shook and essentially are just waiting ducks.
Johnny was sitting out in the forest. Alone, not even with Rhonda, his trusted companion. His only companion for 20 years really since he left. He was alone sitting in silence as this was slowly settling in. He was holding a picture, a single polaroid. Bitty B swaddled in his lap when they were young. The biggest regret of many in his long life of dumb and numbing situations.
His baby is at the mercy of himself again. He tried to be strong, be resilient at the idea of death. He did, he really did, he was ready to try and pretend to accept it. He tried so hard but now…
He started to cry and scream in pain. He tried to tell him he'll be ok as their reunion was still pretty fresh. But no, no this ran deeper than anything else he's experienced. He couldn't live with himself if this ended with him gone forever. Or alive yet stranded with no chance of return. He heard all those….high council whispering. He saw the growing lists of concerns. The endless possibilities of this all going wrong…
He was going to lose his brother in the worst way possible. And that made him unbearably angry too. They were robbing Branch of his home, his family, his life. Branch was going to be engaged and married to a wonderful troll. He remembers Synth still asking him for his blessing even though he wasn't the head of their family. He asked all of them for their blessing and wanted them to be a part of the engagement party too. They were important to Branch and he wanted them there. And damnit he wanted Branch to have it too.
Bruce wasn't far hearing from the distance as John finally really broke down. He was petting Rhonda as he tried not to vomit. This whole situation has left him feeling incredibly nauseous. He had to go home soon to see to Brandy and the Kids. It felt wrong but he also needed some support right about now and Brandy should hear all the details in person…
They were getting so close after knowing each other. The kids loved their uncle Branch and his boyfriend..
He doesn't know what he is gonna tell them. How could he even explain it all? They're still young kids and…
He held his head against the armadillo buss.
Chapter 32
Notes:
So hard to write with so many ideas at once!!! More coming soon!!
Chapter Text
“A rush job?! You're playing with his head and you give him a rush job?!” Riff yelled angrily slamming his palms on the table.
Lownote on the other side silent with a dark expression. He regrets it yes but he couldn't go into the demanded detail this called for. He had to get rid and completely block any and all memory of his home world. Yes he couldn't tune in and out all the fine details. Or completely hash out how to connect him aside from the basics. He gave him a job, what he knows now, and that rounds it up. But his brain should fill in its own blanks as long as they're careful.
John should have already removed any evidence that disproves Branch wasn't originally here. Clay got a birth certificate made and dated as if it had always existed. Spruce had someone edit some photos to create baby pictures and hold them up on the wall. Various milestones or having him added into old pictures.
“This isn't right, you can't ask us to be ok with this!!” Val detested angrily to the gathered leaders and ambassadors.
The primary belief of Rock trolls and Rockers is to have autonomy and freewill above all else. Branch had been stripped of that in a day without his knowledge. He's being forced into a position of no control or say in this very serious matter. His brain had been altered for fucks sake?! It's a step Lownote and JD had no right to take!
“May I remind you that not too long ago you didn't seem to have that same take during the Rock-apocalypse.” Delta hissed angrily from her seat.
It was one thing to learn their world was supposed to plunge into darkness and mayhem. But to learn the only countermeasure they had was a brainwashed troll from another universe. Who apparently is the reason they are at risk of an apocalypse due to his absence in their world..
She didn't understand this whole medical and universal mumbo jumbo Lownote was talking about. However she can tell by the faces of Gust and Holly it's not great. There's weight to it, more than what she would like and a lot of conflicting parts about this.
Trollex was silent beside his brother. He put a hand on his shoulder squeezing it telling him not to speak. It looks bad for him to weigh in while having a relationship with Branch. Not to mention Trollex could be considered already biased with his friendship with Clay. It'll make the fight bigger and escalate it further. Currently Branch was at techno Lagoon ‘rebuilding’ slides and various patches of plants and such. It was a hard sell for a restructuring and rebuilding project but they managed to convince him. Techno lagoon was underway to be a more ideal living space as they speak.
Branch was an amazing sense of help already. And by technicality he had already in fact stopped apocalypses. That massive creature that was threatening to blow over or inhale Trollstopia just by breathing. John threw out his reanimated corpse projects because Branch saw them and reacted poorly to it. Which after Clay told him sounded like an actual zombie apocalypse waiting to happen. He went to Bergen town and got the pop string without both getting eaten or them all enslaved. Branch was infact a fucking miracle worker and end of the world prevention king at the moment.
Branch meanwhile had just finished up his work. Having lunch with Grandma and working on a little surprise. Be was making a special bracelet for Synth. He could have sworn he had made a courting bracelet before though…
But if he did Synth wouldn't have taken it off right? He wouldn't have, otherwise he'd be denouncing their relationship. So he's making him a courting bracelet with Synth's favorite colors and gems that matched his eyes
Yet he kept remembering a bracelet already like this….
His grandma noticed his distress on his face as his brows furrows. She set down her drink and turned to him to ask what was wrong.
He didn't know how to explain this odd feeling. The feeling he's forgotten something, something important. Or that something was wrong and he's missing a problem. But that doesn't make any sense and-
He noticed the calendar left on the table and back at her. Wait a minute, oh my goodness how could he have forgotten!! How could any of them have?! Grandma's birthday is tomorrow!! He can't believe none of them had marked it down!
