A Metal and Flesh Family

Summary:

"A retired soldier? How the hell would it care for a child?" Enderia sneered. She had come with her son, Ranboo to a store that sold androids. They had gone to the caretaker section. She needed something she knew could keep her baby cared for properly. An android that had previously been a soldier used for war that was simply rebuilt to be a caretaker due to Cyberlife not wanting to waste it didn't seem like something she particularly wanted to be around her son.

Chapter Text

"A retired soldier? How the hell would it care for a child? " Enderia sneered.

The employee seemed unphased by her distaste, a true salesman, undeterred. She looked back up at the android, it was pale, had long pink hair with similar eyelashes, and was quite tall. Looked sharp but slim and almost frail if you looked a bit harder. She scoffed, "are those traits to make it seem more harmless?"

"Ma'am I assure you, as a loyal employee that many adjustments have been made to its software, it's completely safe for your son!" He looked at the 10 year old child who was staring at the android with bright eyes. She sighed. "You see, even your son has taken an interest in it! It's harmless and can be a perfect caretaker and servant!" Enderia was hesitant but looked at her son and it morphed into something more simply indecisive.

"Ran, sweetie?" Her voice instantly softened from the critical tone when speaking to her son. Ranboo looked up, not quite meeting her eyes. His head tilted slightly. "What do you think of it?" He looked back up at it. It looked sharper than the others. Those looked softer, built and made originally for families and not war. But Ranboo didn't really care. It looked cool. Something neat to have around.

"Pretty." He mumbled. Always a quiet one. Enderia knew it wasn't smart to have a child dictate their own caretaker but it's going to be the one who's around him most, might as well let him have a say in it. She sighed once again, it felt like a theme to her.

"Can you wake it up please?" The employee nodded, he put his hand on a screen beside the capsule that the android stood in. Its eyes fluttered open and moved in perfect circles to adjust and locate its settings. Once they settled they settled its gaze on Ranboo, whose eyes widened when realizing the color of its eyes.

"Mama! Mama look! It's like me!" Ranboo squealed louder and full of more excitement than she's seen from him in weeks. He pointed to his eye then up to the androids. Its eyes are a deep maroon color, slightly fading in the rust in the center of its iris. Ranboo's left eye was the same. Enderia softened. She couldn't refuse her son this.

"What would you name it? It doesn't have one, name it like a puppy! Okay, sweetie?" Ranboo nodded vigorously. She hummed waiting for his answer.

"Technoblade, can I name it Technoblade?" He whispered, returning to the quietness of before. It's an odd name for it but her family has a history that's seen worse ones.

"Of course." Enderia turns to the employee, who smiles brightly. "We'll take it."

♡~♡•♡~♡

It registered everything in it coming to life again, checking and registering systems. All in good condition, when its eyes opened it looked around to the environment it registered quickly. The android store. Then it fell and registered on a child. Taking in their features.

Black and platinum blonde mid length hair, large green and maroon eyes, a pale complexion. Main features taken. Its eyes moved to who it registered as an employee to the side. Then focusing on the woman next to him. Dark black to purple long box braids, bright green eyes, a dark complexion. Main features taken.

“Mama! Mama look! It's like me!” the child squealed.

"What would you name it? It doesn't have one, name it like a puppy! Okay, sweetie?" The Child nodded vigorously. She hummed waiting for his answer.

"Technoblade, can I name it Technoblade?" The child whispered, going back to the previous volume and tone, something much shyer and quiet.

"Of course." The woman next to them said, "We'll take it." the employee nodded and turned to the android.

“TB800, register your name” then the child whispered the name mentioned before.

“Technoblade.”

Then it says its first sentence. A monotone, flat voice. Devoid of any proper expression.

“My name is Technoblade.”

The lack of anything happy didn’t scoop out the joy in the child but it did in the woman next to him. “Why does it sound so depressing? Why does it talk like that?” The employee looked perplexed but not to be deterred.

“Well, Ma'am, to my best guess, as it was a soldier they found no need to make it sound so emotional, extra work for something of pointless use. I’m assuming that they didn’t add it even after they reprogrammed it.” The woman's mouth turned into a thin line as the child was still focused onto Technoblade.

“Ran, dear?” the child looked to the woman, observed to be the child’s mother. “Do you still want this one? Even without the possibility of having a normal voice?” the child nodded and the mother relented. The mother turns to the employee and the child refocuses on Technoblade. The woman nodded.

♡~♡•♡~♡

Technoblade was seated in the backseat of the car next to the child. The woman — whom he learned was named Enderia — adjusted the front mirror until both the child and Technoblade could see her eyes.

“Right. So Technoblade, next to you is my son, Ranboo. I am Enderia as you had heard at the store, I wasn’t sure if you heard Ranboo’s name properly. At home you’ll be meeting my ex-w-... my wife , Opal, she’ll give you general basic instructions but your job premise at the house is to 1, top priority , take care of Ranboo. He’s 10 and you’ll look after him, all the basics of child care, and whatever else you have to do in specifics. Ranboo struggles in math so that would be an example of specifics.” Technoblade nodded in response as Ranboo simply listened silently. “2, you’ll be doing basic house work, whatever Opal neglects but leave things to Ranboo to do as chores, it’s how he’ll get an allowance. Kids need that type of stability and early process of learning how to manage money. Okay wow I’ve said a lot, I’ll stop now and see what else I need to cover when I give you a tour of the house” Technoblade nodded again before he looked at Ranboo. The child it’d be taking care of.

“I think Technoblade is long,” he whispered. His mother squinted through the mirror.

“Honey, you picked the name?”

“I know I named hi-...it Technoblade but I never denied it was long. I just wanted to make a nickname…it’s what that was leading to…I want a nickname for it.” Ranboo turned to Technoblade. “Do you want a nickna-” Ranboo’s whispers were quickly broken off by his mother.

“Ranboo, honey it doesn't want things, it doesn’t know how to do that,” Ranboo frowned, face set with a clear disagreement.

“But it’s allowed to want! People wan!-”

“It’s not a person.” Enderia said with a tone of finality in it. With no room to debate her anymore, the clear future of never winning Ranboo simply deflated. Slumping in his seat and sulking.

“You can give me a nickname, Ranboo” Technoblade chimed in. Enderia and Ranboo looked visibly shocked to hear it add to the conversation. Though Ranboo recovered faster than Enderia and brightened.

“Techno! That’s your nickname! Techno! Or Tech if I feel especially lazy.” Techno. Techno smiled and nodded, Ranboo looked even more surprised and elated. Ranboo turned to fully face Techno and hugged it. Techno sat there arms extended. Techno didn’t reciprocate the hug, but that's okay for Ranboo as the hug lasted as long as it had started. Ranboo moved back to his place next to the window, staring out of it, face quickly going blank as he had clearly spaced out by now. Techno unlocks its body that had been stuck in that un-hug pose. Looking out its own window.

Seeing the fancy modern look on steroids it can’t help but think of nothing. Like a sleeping computer.

It all seems unnecessary and depressing

Odd how the world looks from a view so artificial.

The car pulled into a big nice looking home, the outside a dark lavender color with a white trim. Two stories and a confirmed attic present, the lawn and flowers that lined the side of the fences that lined the side of the house. The concrete path went straight to the porch that went up two stairs and extended to both sides of the house with its own fence  and pillars that connected to the awning.

It was a very nice, very suburban home.

“C’mon Techno,” Ranboo said to it, waving a hand up. Techno followed walking behind him the whole time. Enderia unlocked the door and she put a hand out preventing Ranboo and Techno from going in. She turned to Ranboo with a bitter, strained smile.

“Hey sweetie, let me go in for a moment, y’know talk to your Mom, okay?” Ranboo looked uncomfortable and curled in on himself but nodded with acceptance. Enderia went in shutting the door behind her.

“Does this happen often?” Techno asked and it caught Ranboo off guard with a small flinch produced from it. Ranboo nodded, flushed with embarrassment, Techno raised an eyebrow.

“Uhm it happens everytime I come home.” Ranboo used a tone and expression that clearly displayed that the topic is over. By the time it ended the door opened again Enderia appearing with a smile still strained as it was before. A slammed door sounding in the background, both Ranboo and Enderia flinched at it.Techno is getting a small feel for the household and the android isn’t not sure it’s a good one.

Enderia opened the door wider, stepping to the side. “Come in you two!”

Ranboo sighed, shoulders sagged and gestured to the door. “Welcome home, Techno.”

Chapter Text

Once Ranboo and Techno stepped into the house Ranboo took a hold of his mother’s hand and she gave a much more genuine and soft smile as Ranboo clung to her for comfort. She put the hand that wasn’t being held by Ranboo on her hip and kept her soft smile only making it wider "Alright! Time to show you around," she strutted Ranboo followed close still attached to her hand Techno followed a step behind her. She had led them both around, the living room, and the kitchen that was connected to it by a counter with a granite countertop that acted as the barrier. The entire house had a wood floor. There were two bedrooms downstairs that was made into an office and a guest room and a small bathroom that didn’t have a shower or bathtub in it placed in the spot under the stairs.

She then led them upstairs, the stairs that started in the entryway in front of the door. She led them down the hallway pointing at various rooms. Ranboo. Opal and Enderia’s room are on the opposite side to Ranboo’s room, their doors lining up, Opal and Enderia are next to the bathroom, the bathroom with a door that connects with their room, and to the hallway for public use. Adjacent to Ranboo’s room is another room turned into an office, this one looked more juvenile and less adult with equipment that matched a kid's needs. “That is an extra room we decided to make an office-type room for Ranboo, we had no use for it, already have a guest room and we don’t need an entire room for storage.” Techno nodded. “You can vacuum the two rooms but I want Ranboo to mostly clean them, mostly for his own benefit of keeping habits of cleaning up after himself and part of his allowance chores, if he needs it you can help him” Techno robotically nodded to everything she said.

There was a room that Ranboo and Enderia silently strode past, Techno had the sense not to ask about it. The tour ended at the end of the upstairs hallway. “Welp that’s it! That’s our home! I’m sure you’re able to memorize it.” Techno nodded once more. Enderia smiled. “Looks like it’s getting pretty late, I’d say it’s time to start dinner.”

Dinner seemed to be tense for lack of other words. It’s where Techno got to meet Opal. She looked very less pleased to see Techno as an added addition to the home. Techno was asked to go relax on the couch while they ate as it cannot eat itself. Opal seemed like a normal woman, she was quite pale with curly platinum blonde hair and hazel eyes. She’s wearing an off-white turtleneck but a pure white ankle-length skirt. It seemed elegant and simple. Enderia wore the same feel to it. A dark purple—nearly black—button-up with black slacks and previously before she had taken them off, purple stilettos. Ranboo didn’t have that energy. An oversized black and white sweater and calf-length purple skirt, an identical color to his mother's shirt. There seems to be a family color theme here.

Techno seemed really detached from it.

Techno observed them a lot and learned a lot from them. Ranboo and Enderia were tense the whole time and Opal looked annoyed. When it was over Ranboo practically scurried up the stairs as fast as he could. Enderia looked up at the stairs that he had run up frantically. She looked at Techno as it was cleaning up the plates and cutlery. “Can you go up and be with him? I’ll finish it down here.” Enderia smiled sadly, she smiled a lot but none of them seemed to convey actual joy or positive emotion. It’d seen one only, it was at the store where she turned completely soft for Ranboo.

Techno nodded and put the dishes down letting Enderia take over for it. It walked up the stairs to where it knew Ranboo’s office and room would be. it went to the room as it figured that he’d be there more. It had figured out quickly that Ranboo is skittish so it decided to approach it all softly. Techno knocked on the door softly. A small whisper of “Come in,” sounded and Techno opened the door, going in and shutting it behind it. Ranboo looked pleased when it did. Techno didn’t know what Ranboo needed but the kid seemed quiet so it’ll mimic that.

It approached the bed carefully where Ranboo was curled on it, on the wall next to its headboard and the window on the opposite side of him. Ranboo was looking at it and patted next to him, Techno sat on the bed next to Ranboo and the silence stretched out, it seemed comfortable as Ranboo looked considerably better than he did at dinner. It kept up until Ranboo spoke.

“I don’t like calling you an ‘it’. ” Techno tilted its head in question of what they meant by that. “It feels dehumanizing to you”

“Well I’m exactly a human so I don’t believe that applies to me.” when it said that Ranboo’s face scrunched up and he looked frustrated.

“You don’t think it does but it does.”

“How so?”

“Well, people don’t call you that simply because you aren’t human. They use gendered pronouns on pets and animals don’t they?” Techno nodded and Ranboo took it to keep talking. “They use it because they don’t consider you a person which you may think ‘well I’m not’ but you are to me and I don’t like calling you that because I see you as a person and I think it’s stupid that others don’t and-” Ranboo took a big breath the rambling having used it all. He looked to Techno to see it still engaged and listening. He smiled and flopped down on his back folding his hands on his stomach. He hummed “I just don’t know…I don’t like it.”

“If you don’t like calling me ‘it’ then what would you like to use?” Ranboo looked a little surprised to hear Techno talk much less ask. Ranboo pursed his lips.

“Not for me to pick. How about you pick, use that computer brain of yours to decide for yourself.” Techno’s face turned from his resting (bitch) face to one of thought.

“I feel He/Him/His would be appropriate, what do you think, Ranboo?” Ranboo smiled.

“If that’s what you’d like, Tech.” Techno mirrored Ranboo’s smile.

♡~♡•♡~♡

It had gotten later and Techno expected Ranboo to ask him to leave to go to sleep but Ranboo never asked him to leave nor did he do anything to get ready for bed.

It’s now 12:30am Techno had asked him to sleep about 3 times and Ranboo kept refusing harshly. Techno needs to figure out why.

“Ranboo” Ranboo looked at him to show that he’s listening. “Why won’t you go to sleep?” Ranboo looked to the ground and didn’t answer. Techno kept his stare directed at Ranboo and sat like that for 5 minutes before Ranboo broke.

“If I stay awake it won’t change. It’ll stay the same.” Techno wasn’t sure what that meant.

“What do you mean?”

“Mama wants to leave. I know she’ll do it if I sleep so if I don’t sleep she won’t go away”

“Are you sure? How do you know?”

“I heard her talking to Mrs. Kristin.” Ranboo moved from sitting with his legs sprawled out to pulling his knees up to his chest and resting his chin on it.

“Who’s Mrs. Kristin?”

“My friend's mom. I like her. She’s really nice, you’d like her too.” There’s a soft, happy look in Ranboo’s eye when he talks about Mrs. Kristin. There was a strange warmth in him, warm, almost burning, and confusing. Perhaps there’s an issue in his systems.

“I see.”

“You won’t let me fall asleep right?” Techno went quiet, his lips pressed into a thin line. He can’t lie to Ranboo, he wants to have Ranboo be healthy and sleeping is healthy, this is his purpose, to take care of Ranboo.

————————————

Take Care of Ranboo

————————————

Yes. this is his duty as an android. He was assigned this task and responsibility by his owner. He can’t lie to Ranboo, he can’t tell him he will make sure he won’t sleep.

“I can’t promise that Ranboo” Ranboo buried his face in his knees.

“Of course.”

Ranboo ended up falling asleep with Techno by him. Techno moved him and put him under the blankets on his bed, putting him to bed properly. He left the room, going downstairs to see Enderia in the living room, her elbows resting on her knees and her head in her hands. 3 suitcases were next to her.

Ranboo really wasn’t lying.

“Enderia?” Her head snaps up to his voice, eyes watery and wide.

"Techno," she says nearly breathlessly. "Is he asleep?" Her voice is shaky, Techno nods. "Thank God, he's been refusing to sleep for days and anytime he does it's such a short amount of time and I don't know why so I didn't know how to help him." She put her face in her hands again halfway through, making her voice muffled

"He knew if he slept you'd take the chance to leave." Her head whipped around so fast there was an audible small pop.

"How did he-"

"He heard your talk with a ' Mrs. Kristin' . He didn't want you to leave. And I believe that to him, especially while was asleep, he didn't want you to go."

"Fuck. Of course, he did. His ears are too fucking good I swear to god." she sighed heavily. "Technoblad I need you to do something for me.”

“Yes, Enderia?”

“Please protect him, this is an official task, please do not just take care of him like any old caretaker, please, please. Protect Ranboo. ” she sounded so desperate and her eyes displayed the same.

▽△Tasks Updated△▽

“I will protect him, Enderia.”

—————————

Protect Ranboo

—————————

“Technoblade…y’know…I just- I just didn't want him to see me walk out."

"From what I saw, I'm sure he'd like a proper goodbye." Enderia's face seemed to fall even more than what he knew to be possible. She nodded.

♡~♡•♡~♡

Her nod meant nothing.

Truly, it didn’t. That night when she had dismissed Techno off for the night so he can go into his "sleeping" state that charged his body and rested his systems, she had loaded up her car with her luggage and left.

She only left Ranboo a note on his bedside table that he saw in the morning.

His reaction froze for a long time. 10 minutes. He stopped seeming like he was even there. Like he had left his body.

When he had finally processed all of it, he cried. He launched at Techno to hug him, Techno hugged back this time, Ranboo cried and sobbed for a long time. Until Techno's shoulder felt soaked and Ranboo's energy fully drained along with his tears.

Enderia was gone. His mother was gone. He told Techno he hadn't told her that he loved her enough, hadn't hugged her enough.

Ranboo finally went to bed properly. Enderia's note in his hand.

He slept for a long time.

Notes:

Not me describing Enderia and Ranboo's clothes because I forgot to last chapter-

I'm so sorry for the massive paragraphs, I didn't know how to break them up, I despise giant paragraphs (or my attention span is simply too fucking small)

Bals, again, this is quite a slow start but its plot is developing and I'm partly winging this so I hope and think it's pick up a bit in the next few chapters

Chapter 3: Helplessness

Summary:

Making progress is hard, especially when you're so uninformed about what you're working hard ot make progress on.

Chapter Text

Ranboo put the note from Enderia in his office, not telling Techno where it’s located, Ranboo had directly told him why, ‘I don’t want you to tell Mom. I dunno if you’d snitch or not.’ he had shrugged hopelessly when he said it.

Opal.

Opal is also someone he’s been learning a lot about.

Something significant to him is how her tasks work…or more of how he doesn’t understand how her tasks work, she keeps changing her expectations on the tasks she gives, Techno adjusted quickly to keep up despite that. He’s also noticed that when Opal does the expectations shifts Ranboo, from wherever he’s hiding, glares.

That’s another thing Techno has learned but it’s Opal’s and Ranboo’s relationship as mother and son. Ranboo often hides from her. Techno hasn’t truly learned first hand why, he wants to open the box of why and what happens if he’s found. Techno hasn’t been around long enough to know any of that.

Techno has also learned once again about Opal’s tasks is to not to point out or question such shifts in tasks and expectations. Opal gets quite upset. She had yelled and thrown things before, she had thrown a bottle at Techno before. It had shattered on his face and cut it.

Ranboo didn’t glare that time, he just looked sad. When his sad eyes met Techno’s they widened before he whipped his head away and quickly crawled away from his hiding spot before booking it up the stairs again with as much stealth as he could. Techno feels an obligation to understand why. Why does he act like that? Why does he hide like that? Why does he try so hard to travel through his own home like a ghost that’s too scared to haunt it?

Techno is sure it connects to the overall top priority tasks given to him, taking care and protecting Ranboo, that helps fuel the needs within his systems.

Techno decides he’ll try to push the topic for answers lightly and see how it goes.

♡~♡•♡~♡

They were in Ranboo’s office. Ranboo wanted to draw and invited Techno to do so with him. Having no other pressing tasks, Techno complied easily. Techno watched as Ranboo drew a black and white cat with yellow eyes. Techno used this to break the silence.

From what he knows on what to do here, it’s to get comfortable then ease into a difficult topic. Yet he still had to tread extra lightly. Ranboo’s attitude changed after Enderia left. Quieter, less willing to talk without others prompting, and clammed up completely quite easily, “Do you like cats?” Techno spoke quietly, tones varied on how the other contributed with their own. Ranboo looked up and nodded in response. Techno needed to jumpstart verbal responses. “Is that the type of cat you’d like?” Ranboo nodded again looking back down to his drawing. It seems Techno is asking the wrong questions here. “If you had a cat like that, what would you name it?”

“Enderchest.” Ranboo said back, as quiet as Techno, confirming that Techno’s quiet volume was the correct choice.

“That’s an interesting name, why Enderchest?” Ranboo’s face shifted to showing he’s uncomfortable. Techno isn’t doing well on this social part.

“It’s a reference, me and my friend made ideas for pets we’d want.” There’s the bridge. Techno can use this. Techno could’ve taken the easier route of putting Ranboo into comfort better with asking about his friends but dragging this out seems like a bad idea. Techno doesn’t see the need to have patience in this situation if it wasn’t required to get the information he needs.

“Want? If you tried, would Opal be open to getting you a cat?” Ranboo paused at the question, it didn’t need to take a high tech android to know that Opal and Ranboo’s relationship was a shaky thing to bring up. Ranboo shook his head. “Why?”

“I don’t want to ask.” Techno tilted his head in question.

“Why?”

“You ask ‘why’ a lot…you’re acting like a kid.” Ranboo looked uncomfortable again. “Mom’s mean. Mean to people. I- I don’t know with kitties.” Oh. This is a start.

“How is she mean to people?” No response. He watched as Ranboo curled in on himself and devoted all his attention to drawing.

Ranboo clammed.

Techno pushed too hard. But he got an inch. It opens the possibility to a mile.

This is the moment patience is needed. Where it’s required.

So now, it's all in due time…in due time…in due time.

♡~♡•♡~♡

"Techno?" Techno looked over from his place in the laundry room to the 10 year old peeking in from the doorway. It’s been a slow process, especially since the time Techno had questioned him when he was drawing, to get Ranboo to open up, he’s so hesitant, it’s hard but slowly he’s breaking through. Ranboo whispers less and can finally use a normal volume of voice around him. Hearing him constantly hold a whisper tone isn’t a healthy thing for him, a developing child who needs to become alive in his own home. Most would see it as unnerving.

A burning warmth of a feeling arises everytime he sees Ranboo take his whisper and raise it up to normal tones yet be extra jumpy and anxious. Something must be seriously wrong with his systems, at first with the mention of “Mrs. Kristin” and now that. Although…if he were to go to receive maintenance he’d be leaving his tasks incomplete and be leaving Ranboo alone, unprotected and untaken care of. He can’t do that. This error isn’t affecting his systems too much. He can deal with it.

"Yes, Ranboo?" Ranboo looks hesitant to continue but then his face sets in determination, Techno raises an eyebrow but clearly it was the wrong move as Ranboo nearly faltered.

"You- you used to be a soldier android right?" Techno was slightly taken off guard from the question, it had come out of nowhere and he wasn’t sure where Ranboo had planned from asking.

"I was, yes." Techno nodded

"That means you're strong right?"

"I am, I am in fact stronger than most androids out there." Techno nodded again and watched Ranboo’s eyes light up, and…it was the first he had seen since he had met him in the android shop when he realized Techno’s eyes matched left eye. Techno needed to preserve that sparkle, Ranboo’s 10, he should always have that sparkle.

"Perfect!” Ranboo beamed. Warmth, nearly burning, Techno isn’t sure if it had always been there and he had blocked it out or it got stronger suddenly. “Pick me up! Please? Mom says now that I'm 10 I can't be picked up but…I uh- I still wanna be held in some way." Techno nods. He walks closer to Ranboo and puts his hands under his armpits then he lifts, extending his arms out fully. And holds Ranboo there. Ranboo laughs quietly, "That's- pft- you're holding me like I'm a cat trying to scratch you!"

"You do have many cat-like qualities" He says tilting his head slightly, Ranboo laughs harder and Techno smiles something small and warmly to it.

"Okay, okay,” Ranboo breathed in and out. “You seem to be struggling with the uppies part of holding kids, that's okay, we'll work on it. There's- there's another way you can hold people! Put me down." Techno puts Ranboo down and Ranboo's quick to grab his hand and drag him upstairs to his room. "Okay! Perfect! Now sit down on the ground! Criss-cross applesauce." Techno moves to the middle of the room and stiffly sits down with his criss-crossed.

"Is this right?" Ranboo nods quickly. He runs up to Techno and crawls into his lap, moving Techno's hands from his lap. He sits there back to chest and tucks his head under Techno's chin.

"Okay now wrap your arms around me, gently, like hm, I dunno, in a comfy way?" Ranboo is clearly nervous about all of this, it had become painfully clear the moment he had sat in his lap. Ranboo feels Techno lightly nod as he moves his arms to wrap around Ranboo and tuck him further into his embrace.

"Is this right?" Ranboo can't help but feel his face get uncomfortably warm and tears well up in his eyes, dangerously close to the edges.

"...Perfect. Mom—” Ranboo took a deep breath, a small shake in it before he continued, “Mom used to hold me kinda like this before she got mean. I think…I think you're better at it." Techno smiles again bigger than before. Ranboo blinks and rubs his tears away, don't waste them on a meanie.

"That's good, I'll take that in pride." Techno isn’t meant to have a vocal expression, they forgot to implement it in his system but Ranboo can’t help but hear so much within the monotone words

"That good, you should." Ranboo says quietly as he fiddles with his hands, he doesn’t know why he's so nervous to ask something so simple, so simple that he knew wouldn’t be rejected. He doesn’t think Techno can reject it. But yet it’s still so nerve wracking that he has to build the courage to ask, “Can I…play with a piece of your hair?” Techno doesn't answer and instead shifts his head so Ranboo is able to reach a part of it. Ranboo grabs a piece gently and starts braiding and unbraiding it. "Y'know people at school say that androids are emotionless and cold...I don't think they have any androids because this feels really warm." Techno didn't respond but he smiled.

He used this moment to not only rest his systems but slowly go over the milestones that Ranboo and him have hit in this one interaction of comfort for the kid. The talking without prompting, properly asking for things (Ranboo has been awkwardly avoiding that), volume when speaking, and more. It's amazing and the best interaction so far. Yet  beyond this amazing step, Ranboo so far within Techno's other interactions with him has prove that Ranboo is a strange kid. Techno could see the walls Ranboo kept up, they were higher than what they should be for a child. They only got worse as time went on. Everytime Techno sees how Ranboo behaves then connects it to his age, the results are never desirable.

Technoblade was learning a lot about the household dynamics, Ranboo and Opal’s behavior, the air within the house but it’s not enough. Protecting Ranboo has become complicated, he doesn’t know enough to know how to take care of him.

As Ranboo is curled into him something floods in his systems and it isn’t Thirium 310. He knows the definition of it, he knows what it is by the definition within the internet, within general knowledge.

It’s helplessness.

He’s not supposed to feel helpless.

He’s not supposed to feel. He can’t.

Something is desperately wrong with his systems.

Yes.

That must be it.

Chapter 4: Many Realizations.

Summary:

"Because I'm more than an android. So are you." Philza's smiled never seemed to fade and it seemed…proud. "Tell me, what do you feel with Ranboo?" What? Techno remembers the burning, the burning warmth.

"A burning. It's a burning warmth in my systems," Philza snorted, "I think it might be an issue in my systems but if I report it they'll take me to get me fixed."

"And what's wrong with that?"

“I’m meant to care for and protect Ranboo, I can’t do that if they take me away from him.”

“I see.” it felt as though Philza knew more about Techno within the 5 minutes they’ve been speaking to each other than Techno knew about himself in his whole…however old he is. Techno isn’t sure if he likes it.

Chapter Text

It’s been around 2 weeks since Techno’s come to the home and has been given the duty of Ranboo’s caretaker and it’s been 3 days since Ranboo had cuddled with Techno. One day after the blatant avoidance of Ranboo running away from him that had occurred for 2 days after the cuddle session, ended.

And it's been…3 days since he had his issue with his systems (that feeling, that helplessness was just about issue with his systems. He's sure of it.). Ranboo's opened up considerably after that, he still has those walls of his but it’s progress that Techno smiles about. It's taken 2 weeks for volume to rise when Opal's away, talking without prompting, asking for things, yet there's still many struggles still to work through.

♡~♡•♡~♡

Techno isn’t sure why it hadn’t been mentioned before but he had noticed previously that Ranboo hasn’t gone to school the entire time he’s been here. While he sits with Ranboo at the dinner table he should bring it up. “Ranboo,” he looks up from his bowl of mac n’ cheese with his mouth full. That’s another one, Ranboo doesn't and refuses to allow Techno even in the kitchen when he cooks, he'll make himself breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Techno doesn’t know why but he wants it to stop, he had tried to push it once but Ranboo had yelled for the first time since he's been in the home, he had nearly screamed. Techno is stubborn about his biggest task but he knows limits and boundaries when he encounters one. Nonetheless Ranboo’s still 10 and Techno deems that as too young to be alone in the kitchen cooking food all by himself. They'll have to keep working on it.

“Hm?”

“Why aren’t you in school? You haven’t gone once.” Ranboo’s eyebrows raise like he realizes something.

“Oh, Mama and I got you the first day of spring break. I guess she didn’t want me to be all alone during break while she left.” There's a bitterness in his tone that is also oh so very sad. Ranboo’s upset and has been going through various emotions and reactions to try to cope.

“I see, you go to Essempi Elementary, right?” Ranboo nods, “I will be walking you in the morning, school starts at 7:45–”

“Don’t bother walking me, I can go myself.” Techno stayed silent for a moment after Ranboo said that, having cut him off.

“...School starts at 7:45, I plan to wake you at 6:30. We’ll leave at 7:00, the school isn’t a long walk so we’ll approximately get there by 7:15 which will give you 30 minutes to eat breakfast. Unless you want to eat it here, then we can leave at 7:15 and get there at 7:30 and you’ll have 15 minutes before you go to class.” Techno rambled about the school times and walking and it had stunned Ranboo…and confused him, that’s a lot of words and numbers that were coming at him quickly but Techno kept going. “School gets out at 14:30…or well you use 2:30 so I’ll use that, I’ll be right outside waiting for you then we can go home, unless you have some after school activity. Do you have an after school activity I don’t know about, Ranboo?” Ranboo had tuned him out a bit ago and kept eating his mac n’ cheese.

“Techno you’re mac n’ cheese is going to get cold.” Ranboo had deflected, he isn’t used to this. Techno… wants– no. Nevermind, sure it felt like care but Techno doesn’t want to, he feels obligated. He's required to watch Ranboo and sees walking to and from school as part of that.

“Right...we’ll discuss it after dinner then.”

♡~♡•♡~♡

They had indeed discussed it a lot more briefly after dinner. Ranboo had decided to eat breakfast at home and made cereal in the morning after waking up at 6:30 then they left at 7:15.

♡~♡•♡~♡

"Ranboo get up, we're getting up for school now. It's the first day back at school." Techno shook his shoulder speaking quietly. Ranboo thankfully didn't take a ton of effort to wake and with the light encouragement to wake up, woke up.

"Hrmmshuhg" Techno led Ranboo from his room to the bathroom.

"Do you normally pick your own clothes or does someone else do it?" Ranboo who'd caught up to the rest of the world and was grabbing his toothbrush and paste didn't give Techno a response beyond pointing to himself then continuing on to brush. "I see. Then I'm going to start breakfast?" Techno tried, Ranboo held the toothbrush in his mouth as he quickly latched onto Techno's arm, rapidly shaking his head. "Okay…I'm thinking cereal, I'm going to get the supplies out for cereal?" Ranboo hesitated but shook his head again in the end, clenching harder on Techno's arm. "Okay. That's okay. I'll brush your hair while you brush your teeth then." Ranboo deemed that acceptable and released his arm.

By 7:15 Ranboo's hair and teeth were brushed, and ate food he had made himself. He wanted to dress nice but to not over-do it for the first day back at school from spring break. It consisted of a black knee length pleated skirt (they had mentioned it being their favorite) and a big yellow sweater. A very big sweater. it reached mid-thigh and the sleeves were far too long. It also looked like it had a couple blue stains on it. (When Techno asked all Ranboo gave him was it was his big brother's and that he stole it. Ranboo doesn't have siblings?) Then just some white ankle length socks and worn down sneakers. "Gotta keep one part casual" Ranboo said to explain the clash in wardrobe pieces.

♡~♡•♡~♡

Techno walked him to school, and if Ranboo subtly slipped his hand into Techno’s neither mentioned it. They both smiled.

When Ranboo and Techno arrived, Ranboo whirled around ripping his hand out of Techno’s and leaped at him latching for the fastest hug he’s ever given then ran off. Techno froze before he had stiffly unfroze and walked home, he should probably commit to cleaning and seeking tasks. Whatever to definitely see if the burning feeling in his systems will go away.

♡~♡•♡~♡

Ranboo had run into the school right after he had hugged Techno which was probably the best move. Yes he’d hugged Techno before but it was less…weird? He doesn’t know what makes it weird now, those are bigger person thoughts and he's too sleepy to try for those right now. He stopped thinking entirely the moment he spotted bright blond and dark brown hair, Tommy! And Wilbur! Wibur’s dropping off Tommy as usual. God he's missed them.

Ranboo ran up to his best friends, he used his height to his advantage, running up and hopping, gripping Wilburs shoulders and using them to boost himself upwards before dropping back down behind the 15 year old. Wilbur had yelped when Ranboo had jumped him and spun around after Ranboo had landed. “Ran!” Tommy piped up before Wilbur got a word in, Tommy practically tackled him into a hug. “Where have you been?! You didn’t come over the entire break! And then Mum got this call from your mum—but the good one—then she got really sad so I thought that you might’ve like- gotten hurt or your mum did! Or that fuckin’ bitch Opal got to you!” Tommy breathed out long after his worried ramble had taken its course. Then Wilbur spoke, turning to Tommy and whacking him in the head.

“Tommy watch your language, you’re going to get in trouble if you do that in class,” he scolded before turning to Ranboo, “He’s right though. Ran, you disappeared on us. We know that it’s not the most fun at house for you and we expected you to come over at one point. God, I should’ve stopped by to pick you up or something, I just…I know how much Opal hates me and I didn’t want to make things worse than they could already possibly be. Sorry, Ran. Next time I’ll pick up either way.” he rambled. Wilbur's silly like that. Worrywart.

“No no! It’s okay, Mom was still mean but I didn’t come over for a different reason, it slipped my mind but it’s mainly because...uhm…and I- um- uh-” Ranboo’s voice was catching and breaking. He’s stumbling and he feels so stumbly. These are bigger emotions than he knows what to do with. He misses his Mama, he doesn’t want to talk about it, he’s not ready, he feels like crying, but he’s at school. He’ll get called a baby then he’ll want to cry more and it’s not fair, that’s not fair. It’s not fair that the other kids get to make fun of him for things like that! It’s not like they’ve never cried! It’s not fair! School is supposed to be a better place! Better than home because it’s better than being around Mom! But he misses Mama, and even if school was better she made home okay! And now he’s scared and- and- ...sometimes not thinking about it is better. He doesn't want to think about it.

Ms. Counselor Puffy said distraction can only go so far and they aren’t good for you but…it’ll work right now right? It’s not forever! So maybe that's okay? It could be an exception! Ms. Counselor Puffy never made times about it. Forever is too long for everything anyway. But right now! It’ll get the feelings to go away, ignore and don’t think about it! Then he won’t be sad, maybe Counselor Puffy will be proud of him for figuring out how to deal with the big emotions because it's not forever!

Ranboo hadn’t realized how long he was in his head, he didn’t know his eyes watered, that his body lightly trembled, and he didn’t know he was scaring Tommy and worrying Wilbur until he was dragged into another hug, this one by both brothers. “Hey…hey now, what’s going on? you don’t need to talk about it but it would help me a ton so I could help you,” Wilbur whispered to him. He then broke the hug kneeling in front of Ranboo.

 “I- uhm…uh…um- I have Techno now.”

“Who the fuck is Techno?” Tommy asked.

“He’s an android, Mama got him…he’s nice…” Wilbur didn’t ask any questions, he just scooped up Ranboo the best he could with his scrawny arms and into another hug, pressing Ranboo’s head into his shoulder. Wilbur has good big brother hugs™. They helped.

“How about you come home after school? Do you think you’d want to?” Ranboo nodded against his shoulder, staying there for a moment more for the feel of Wilbur’s soft sweater before he pulled away. When he pulled from Wilbur, he was yanked by Tommy into a less soft hug but still a nice one. Kind of. It felt more like a chokehold but that was just how Tommy loves others most of the time.

It was kind of suffocating though…literally. Ranboo bapped Tommy’s arm twice and he was released. Tommy still held his hand but then with the free one he started bapping at Wilbur “Shoo! Leaaaaveeee! If you’re late for school again Dadza’s gonna kill you! Shoo!” Wilbur yelped out his protests against at least the bap attack he was receiving. He stood up and walked backwards away from the 10 year olds, waving.

“Ran! Feign illness if you wanna come over early, Mumza and Dadza would love to see their 3rd son again! Oh and you can keep the sweater!” Wilbur then spun around and left. Ranboo smiled and his face felt warm. He saw the McCrafts as family, yeah, but it felt weird to have them feel the same. And he didn't realize Wilbur noticed the sweater.

Tommy then dragged them both to class holding his hand. He yapped about how if Ranboo acted sad enough in class he might be able to get candy.

♡~♡•♡~♡

When Techno had arrived back home it felt different than before. More empty and cold, like the living feel of the house had been striped away.

Oh. Ranboo’s not here. That explains it. It’s so much less lively when the only thing that brought it any light or energy is gone.

Disappointing.

But he has work to do while he waits for the light.

♡~♡•♡~♡

School's boring. Ranboo found this out years ago but reminders never hurt. Snack time, recess, and lunch are the only reasons he still comes here. Oh, and Tommy too. Ranboo could always just not go anymore, not like Mom'd notice. Her eyes don't look at him much anyway unless she's mad. He has to work to ignore the idea of Techno noticing. Techno looking at him, seeing Techno look at him without being mad.

It sounds like a dream.

The moment school ends Tommy runs to his cubby to pack away his new school assignments and items, he finishes fast then runs to Ranboo and helps him pack his stuff. Tommy only finishes fast because he just shoves everything into his bag; his math assignments always crumpled (and half of the time suspiciously in Wilbur's handwriting with Wilbur's favorite purple pen. Why doesn't the Teacher do something?)

Tommy started dragging Ranboo with him out of the door when they were both ready. Sprinting through the halls together and having to slow slightly down the stairs. "You're finally coming over! Hurry up!" Tommy shouted.

"You're holding my hand, I can only go as faster as you!" Ranboo retorted loudly back.

"Shut up!" When they got outside their heads whipped around to look for Wilbur and in Ranboo's case, Wilbur and Techno.

♡~♡•♡~♡

Wilbur stood next to a taller man while waiting for Tommy and Ranboo, it felt horribly awkward. He wanted to move away yet for some reason he didn't. His long pink hair was cool though, his android uniform? Not at all, it's stiff and ugly. He remembers when they first got that damn thing off Phil and into normal clothes. Phil will forever be the only one to pull off that much green in his humble opinion. "Why are you staring?" The man turns to face him. Wow! What an intimidating figure. Wilbur didn't really have an answer for him so he goes for the next best thing.

"Hi! I'm Wilbur, Wilbur McCraft, I'm waiting for my little brothers, you are?" Ignoring the question and introducing himself! The next best thing! Yes, he is 15 talking to a very much adult stranger but he's practically an adult himself! It's fine!

"My name is Technoblade, I'm waiting for a child I'm taking care of." Somehow Wilbur gets reminded of something. Technoblade…Technoblade…Technoblade…OH!

~☆~

“I- uhm…uh…um- I have Techno now.”

“Who the fuck is Techno?” Tommy asked.

“He’s an android, Mama got him…he’s nice… ” Wilbur didn’t ask any questions, he just scooped up Ranboo the best he could with his scrawny arms and into another hug, pressing Ranboo’s head into his shoulder. Wilbur. Wilbur knows from experience how much Ranboo yearns for affection and comfort. Wilbur would never deny him what he deserves, he just prays it helps his emotionally adopted little brother.

~☆~

"Oh! You're Techno! Ranboo had mentioned you!" Technoblade's eyes widened. Wilbur can read that, Ranboo must've not mentioned him yet. Wilbur isn't sure if it hurts or not, Ranboo's a good kid and has reasons that could happen, including a spotty memory.

"Oh, how are you related to Ranb-"

"Wil!"

"Wil! Techno!"

Wilbur and Techno's chat cuts off as they see two 10 year olds sprint towards them. Wilbur sees Technoblade smile out of the corner of his eye. Tommy and Ranboo stop in front of them, both happy and excited.

Ranboo goes up to Technoblade, "Techno! We're gonna go over to Tommy's! You can meet Mrs. Kristin and Mr. Phil! I think you'll like them! Mrs. Kristin is Tommy and Wilbur's mom," Ranboo motions towards Wilbur and Tommy. "She's also is super nice and Mr. Phil is their dad and is super nice too and- and he's an android like you!" Techno nodded to Ranboo's rambles, in his eyes it's clear he's determined that that situation is safe for the 10 year old he cares for. Wilbur's happy that everyone can see each other again without any obstacles.

♡~♡•♡~♡

The walk was uneventful but it gave Techno time to memorize the way from school to the McCrafts residents. Ranboo was playing around with Tommy with Wilbur teasing the two and Techno keeping them from stumbling in the road.

It was only a 20 minute walk before they reached the pale purple, white trimmed, two story home that the McCraft family lives in. Techno noticed a specific thing about the home. Despite how nice the home looked…the garden was horrendous. Flowers dead and a vegetable plant he can't even name. It's so deteriorated. The grass is the only plant that looks like it won't disintegrate and blow away in the lightest breeze known to man in a century. Techno wants to fix the garden. He's not supposed to have wants but the state of this garden hurts his Thirium pump so much he will overlook that issue. How do they have an android that's meant to care for things and still have a garden that could disgrace an entire lineage. Wilbur caught Techno's stare and laughed.

"Your face!" He crackled "The garden is a sad place, somehow Dad can't save a plant for the artificial life of him and Mum can't really be on her knees for it that long. A shame really could be pretty and go with the house." Techno nodded before he moved his attention to the two boys who were now booking it to and in the door of the home with the atrocious garden. Wilbur motioned for Techno to follow as he made a quick and light walk inside. Techno followed the trend he sees with kicking off your shoes as you enter. He then followed the next thing, or person, he follows Wilbur as he walked to the living room and the sound of laughter.

What he see is…something he can’t help describe as beautiful, it looks like a picture perfect family or at least a happy one. A woman with long black hair has Ranboo on her lap on her wheelchair, Ranboo’s hugging her like theres no tomorrow, like he’ll never see her again and she’s hugging him back so tenderly and gently. It’s so undoubtedly motherly. Burning warmth. Wilbur had plopped on the couch next to a man shorter than him with blond hair, it reaches his mid-neck, close to his shoulders. Are these people Mrs. Kristin and Mr. Phil? The blond man looks up to him and pats the couch on the other side of him, an invitation to sit next to him. When Techno sits he watches with Mr. Phil, Tommy and Wilbur rile each other up and start to play wrestle, at one point dragging Ranboo into it from Mrs. Kristin’s lap.

“Hi mate! I'm Philza McCraft, I hear you’ve been watching after Ranboo for us.” Techno nods, a traveling thought of "for us?", Philza eyes his uniform and his smile seems to turn more strained than before, Techno isn’t sure why but he won’t focus on that, what he will focus on is the multitude of emotions he sees going through Philza's eyes…but he's an android. How does he do that?

"I have. I am Technoblade. I heard you're an android…and Tommy and Wilbur's dad?"

"I am, I love my boys very much." That…confuses Techno, Philza's odd, he's not supposed to do that. How does he do that?

"But you're an android." Philza's face scrunched then he relaxes and smiles.

"I suppose I am. I suppose I must be just another android to you."

"You suppose?"

"Well, yes, I suppose I am. To the world I am just an android. But! To my sons, to Wilbur and Tommy? I'm dad, I'm dadza even, I'm someone who loves and takes care of them. To Kristin? I'm love, I'm 'darling', I'm her husband. To Ranboo? I'm safe. I'm the closest thing to dad. I'm a person, I'm family to everyone in this room, fuck the world. They don't matter to me, Kristin, Tommy, Wilbur, and Ranboo matter to me, I hope you can become one of them. Ranboo seems to care and love you too." Phil rambled and it sent Techno through so many loops. Love? Father? Android? Phil smiled softly, he sees the dilemma Techno's sporting and he sees progress .

"But…how can an android be a father?"

"Because I'm more than an android. So are you." Philza's smiled never seemed to fade and it seemed…proud. "Tell me, what do you feel with Ranboo?" What? Techno remembers the burning, the burning warmth.

"A burning. It's a burning warmth in my systems," Philza snorted and  I think it might be an issue in my systems but if I report it they'll take me to get me fixed."

He might. “Techno, I think it took me far too long to realize I was more than what I was created to be, no one helped me learn at the start. Now I know and I have for a long time. I won’t let you be the same as me, I’m going to help, I want to be what I didn’t get.”

“Okay, Philza.”

“Call me Phil”

“Okay Phil.” Techno smiles back at Phil for the first time since they started talking, he’s not sure why, it feels appropriate. Why doesn’t he understand so many things? "You're an odd andrio-...man." Phil snorts out a laugh and shakes his head in a way that isn’t negative. Perhaps even affectionate.

“So! Enough about that, tell me about yourself, Techno and I’ll do the same!”

“Okay, so I was first created as a soldier android…”

Techno began to ramble about details about himself with Phil hanging onto his every word, at one point Kristin comes into the conversation, she had earlier came to the conclusion to not interrupt the conversation between the two, Phil needed to be the one to say it, Phil needed to say it. It was something he’s wanted to do for a long time.

♡~♡•♡~♡

Only after so long it was time to go home, Ranboo was beyond disappointed and he had begged to stay the night but Techno disagreed, he didn’t want to something like that without notice to Opal before hand. They could do it next time. Ranboo looked so sad when he said that that he almost took it back and gave in. But he didn’t. The McCrafts looked beyond worried and Techno couldn’t piece it together. It was…frustrating, being out of the loop like this.

♡~♡•♡~♡

Ranboo and Technoblade held hands the whole way home. Ranboo had begun skipping at one point, tripping up on his skirt multiple times, having to make Techno walk faster to stay next to him and watch carefully to keep him from tripping.

When they made it to the house, Opal was on the front porch with a cigarette. When she caught the view of them she glared something that could lightly be described of infuriated if no other word could match.

“Inside. Right fucking now.” Ranboo quickly gave Techno’s hand a quick sqeeze before scampering back into the house. The squeeze definitely meant something Techno didn’t know about. When Techno walked in he saw something finally made everything fit.

Opal was hitting Ranboo, her nails digging into the 10 year olds arm as she smacked him across his face multiple times, whacking him across the side of his head. She was yelling maybe even screaming but it was like she was muted, Techno couldn't hear a thing.

Why didn’t he connect it sooner? How many times has this happened without him knowing? Techno was frozen as it happened, he couldn’t move? Why isn’t he moving? WHY CAN’T HE CAN’T MOVE TO STOP THIS?

When Opal dropped Ranboo on the floor, her arm being the only thing holding him up, he looked at Techno. His eyes full of tears and his expression looked like Techno shattered his world, like it was *him* who slapped him. Ranboo scrambled to stand and up the stairs, Opal didn’t make any moves to stop him.
